Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Liverpool Senior Cup, Quarter Final Tie against our opponents Everton FC. I hope our visitors had a good journey to us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. I’d like to also welcome tonight match sponsors Kestrel Industrial Limited and our match ball sponsors SMS Coaching Limited and St Helens Laptop Repair & Sales. This evenings contest sees us take a break from the normal “bread and butter” of North West Counties League action as we turn our sites to battling for a place in the semi finals of the Liverpool Senior Cup with our illustrious neighbours from Everton. There may be a few split loyalties this evening but one of the things we hope to gain from the game, apart from the right result of course is to gain a few more regular fans coming to watch matches here at Ashton Town. Saturday saw us fall to our 13th league defeat of the season but the 2-1 reverse did not tell the story of the contest as league leading Runcorn Town visited us here at Edge Green Street for the majority of the contest if you were new to the league and did not know which team was which you would have picked the wrong side if you were asked to select the leaders. The hosts dominated and went into the break a goal down as a goal against the run of play sent the visitors in a goal to the good. The pattern of play continued and Town were caught again late in the contest as Runcorn made it 2-0 but a quick reply from Daniel Hand on his first start for the club gave the hosts • Restaurant hope but we could not level. The performance was • Family Beer Garden much improved from our previous outing and Jimmy and the lads will be hoping to take this improved level • Sports Bar of performance into this evening and the upcoming Two Meals for £10 - Monday to Wednesday matches.

We are now halfway through the league campaign and we are in quite a precarious position sitting in 18th position, the four teams below us in the table all have games in hand on us but we need to kick on starting with the visit to Maine Road this coming Saturday. In Town Today . . . Everton was founded as St Domingo's in 1878 so that people from the parish of St Domingo's Methodist Church in Everton could play sport year round. The club was renamed Everton F.C. a year later after the local area, as people outside the parish wished to participate. The club was a founding member of the Football League in 1888–1889, winning their first League Championship title in the 1890–91 season. Everton won the FA Cup for the first time in 1906 and the League title again in 1914–15. The outbreak of the First World War in 1914 interrupted the football programme while Everton were champions, something that would again occur in 1939. During the first decades of their history, Everton had several different kit colours. The team originally played in white and then blue and white stripes, but as new players arriving at the club wore their old team's shirts during matches, confusion soon ensued. It was decided that the shirts would be dyed black, both to save on expenses and to instill a more professional look. The result, however, appeared morbid so a scarlet sash was added. When the club moved to Goodison Park in 1892, the colours were salmon pink and dark blue striped shirts with dark blue shorts then switching to ruby shirts with blue trim and dark blue shorts. The famous royal blue jerseys with white shorts were first used in the 1901–02 season. The club played in sky blue in 1906, however the fans protested and the colour reverted to royal blue. Occasionally Everton have played in lighter shades than royal blue (such as 1930– 31 and 1997–98). In 1901, Everton became the first team ever to officially play in blue and white, and in the 1933 FA Cup Final, became the first club to employ kit numbers (1-11) on the back of the player' shirts. Everton's traditional away colours were white shirts with black shorts, but from 1968 amber shirts and royal blue shorts became common. Various editions appeared throughout the 70s and 80s. Recently however black, white, grey and yellow away shirts have been used. The away shirt for the current season, commencing August 2011, has been reverted back to an amber shirt with navy blue shorts. The home kit today remains royal blue shirts, white shorts and white socks although when playing teams away who also wear white shorts Everton typically wear all blue. It was not until 1927 that Everton's first sustained period of success began. In 1925 the club signed Dixie Dean from Tranmere Rovers for a then record fee of £3000. In 1927–28 Dean set the record for league goals in a single season with 60 goals in 39 league games, a record that still stands to this day. Dean helped Everton to achieve their third league title in this season. Everton were relegated to the Second Division two years later during internal turmoil at the club. However, the club was promoted at the first attempt scoring a record number of goals in the second division. On return to the top flight in 1931–32, Everton wasted no time in reaffirming their status and won a fourth League title at the first opportunity. Everton also won their second FA Cup in 1933 with a 3–0 win against Manchester City in the final, the first ever game to see players were shirt numbers were Dixie Dean becoming NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

. . . Everton Football Club the first Everton number 9. The club ended the decade in 1938–39 by securing a fifth League title. The outbreak of the Second World War again saw the suspension of League football, and when official competition resumed in 1946 the Everton team had been split and paled in comparison to the pre-war team. Everton were relegated for the second time in 1950–51 and did not return until 1953–54, finishing as runners-up in their third season in the Second Division. The club have been a top flight presence ever since despite some near misses. Everton's second successful era started when Harry Catterick was made manager in 1961. In 1962–63, his second season in charge, Everton won the League title and in 1966 the FA Cup followed with a 3–2 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Everton were the first club to break the £100,000 transfer threshold when Alan Ball moved from Blackpool for £110,000 in 1966. Everton again reached the FA Cup final in 1968, but this time were unable to overcome West Bromwich Albion at Wembley. Two seasons later in 1969–70, Everton won the League Championship, nine points clear of nearest rivals Leeds United. During this period, Everton were the first English club to achieve five consecutive years in European competitions between seasons 1961–62 to 1966–67. However, the success did not last; the team finished fourteenth, fifteenth, seventeenth and seventh in the following seasons. Harry Catterick retired and his successors failed to win any silverware for the remainder of the 1970s. Though the club mounted title challenges finishing fourth in 1974–75 under manager Billy Bingham, and under manager Gordon Lee, third in 1977–78 and fourth the following season. Manager Gordon Lee was sacked in 1981. Howard Kendall succeeded Lee as manager and guided Everton to their most successful era. Domestically, Everton won the FA Cup in 1984 defeating Watford. The club secured two league titles in 1984–85 and 1986– 87 and the club's first and so far only European trophy securing the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 1985 final. The European success came after first beating University College Dublin, Inter Bratislava and Fortuna Sittard, Everton defeated German giants Bayern Munich 3–1 in the semi-finals, despite trailing at half time (in a match voted the greatest in Goodison Park history) and recorded the same score line over Austrian club Rapid Vienna in the final. Having won both the league and Cup Winners Cup in 1985, Everton came very close to winning a treble, but lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup final. The following season, 1985–86, Everton were runners up to neighbours Liverpool in both the league and the FA Cup, but did recapture the league title the following season (198687). After the Heysel Stadium disaster and the subsequent ban of all English clubs from continental football, Everton lost the chance to compete for more European trophies. Everton FC continued. . . following the ban. Kendall himself moved to Athletic Bilbao after the 1987 title triumph and was succeeded by assistant Colin Harvey. Harvey took Everton to the 1989 final, but lost 3–2 after extra time to Liverpool. Everton were founder members of the Premier League in 1992, but struggled to find the right manager. Howard Kendall had returned in 1990 but could not repeat his previous success, while his successor, Mike Walker, was statistically the least successful Everton manager to date. When former Everton player Joe Royle took over in 1994 the club's form started to improve; his first game in charge was a 2–0 victory over derby rivals Liverpool. Royle dragged Everton clear of relegation, leading the club to the FA Cup for the fifth time in its history, defeating Manchester United 1–0 in the final. The cup triumph was also Everton's passport to the Cup Winners' Cup - their first European campaign in the post-Heysel era. Progress under Joe Royle continued in1995–96 as they climbed to sixth place in the Premiership. A fifteenth place finish the following season saw Royle resign towards the end of the campaign, to be temporarily replaced by club captain, Dave Watson. Howard Kendall was appointed Everton manager for the third time in 1997, but the appointment proved unsuccessful as Everton finished seventeenth in the Premiership; only avoiding relegation due to their superior goal difference over Bolton Wanderers. Glasgow Rangers manager Walter Smith then took over from Kendall in the summer of 1998 but only managed three successive finishes in the bottom half of the table. The Everton board finally ran out of patience with Smith and he was sacked in March 2002 after an FA Cup exit at Middlesbrough, with Everton in real danger of relegation. The current manager, David Moyes, was his replacement and delivered Everton to a safe finish in fifteenth place. In 2002–03 Everton finished seventh, their highest finish since 1996. A fourth place finish in 2004– 05, qualified Everton for the Champions League qualifying round. The team failed to make it through to the Champions League group stage and were then eliminated from the UEFA Cup. Everton qualified for the 2007–08 and 2008–09 UEFA Cup competitions and they were runners-up in the 2009 FA Cup Final.

Match Report and Photos Saturday 12th November 2011 NWCFL, Premier Division St Helens Town 1-2 Runcorn Town St Helens Town hosted league leaders Runcorn Town at Edge Green Street this afternoon and fell to defeat but the score line did not reflect the game as the hosts dominated for large periods and deserved at least a share of the spoils. The opening stages saw St Helens press forward an early right wing corner was sent into the area by Colin Quirk and found Daniel Hand who in turn played the ball to Andy Olsen who fired just over the bar from the edge of the area. The visiting stopper was called into action as early as the 7th minute when Olsen was released by a through ball and saw his effort turned wide by the advancing Karl Wills at the expense of a corner. Moments later Hand again linked with Olsen with the later curling his effort inches wide of the right hand upright. Against the run of play and with their first threat on goal the visitors took the lead. A counter attack saw the ball worked down the right and it was Shaun Chart who delivered from the flank and it was met by opposite winger Warren Bellew who had the simple task of applying the finish. The hosts responded well to falling behind and almost levelled when their sustained pressure told on 26 minutes, Olsen found David Berry on the left of the area he curled an effort that beat Wills and was heading for the top right hand corner of the net but for a flicked touch off the head of Daniel Dalton which sent it just over the crossbar. The hosts again worked some good positions but failed to apply a quality finish to take the ball past Wills into the Runcorn net and were nearly made to pay before the interval a pressured back pass was half cleared and broke to Bellew who played the ball square to Mark Keddie centrally but he snatched his effort well wide of the right hand upright. St Helens had a chance to level matters going into the break when they were awarded a free kick on the right of the “D� Che Morgan stepped up to strike the effort left footed but it went over the bar and the visitors undeservedly went into the break a goal to the good. The first chance of the second period fell to the visitors as Town debutant Richard Cowderoy had to tipp an effort from Chart over the bar, Cowderoy was back in the action on the hour when he blocked a powerful effort from Keddie and when the rebound broke to Leon Williams the stopper recovered quickly to dive full stretch and tip the effort wide, the effort would not have stood as the assistant referee had raised his flag for offside against the striker. The hosts threatened to level when Colin Quirk did well on the right wing and sent a dangerous cross into the box towards Olsen but another vital intervention from Dalton diverted the ball away from the striker and the loose ball was cleared. At the other end an inswinging corner had to be cleared off the line by Andy Flood. A free kick sent into the box by Morgan towards skipper Michael Burns almost saw the hosts restore parity the ball broke into the stride of Burns but he fired his effort just wide of the right hand upright. Olsen was next to get a good chance as he was presented with a mishit goal kick and he chose to take his effort early but could not find the target. With time running out the visitors doubled their lead when a left wing free kick was half cleared and sent back into the box from the right by Tom Spearitt and Carey turned the ball home centrally. The response was swift by the hosts as they pulled a goal back two minutes later. Hand latched onto a through ball which split the Runcorn defence and he poked the ball under the onrushing stopper to give St Helens a chance but it was too little too late as the league leaders secured the win in less than convincing style. St Helens Town and Everton . . . This evening’s Quarter-Final tie against Everton is the first meeting between the clubs in the Liverpool Senior Cup since the competition was opened up to non-league teams in the 1977/78 season. Town appeared in the last Final of the Non-League competition on 10th May 1977 when they went down by the only goal to Marine at College Road. Everton, who were last season’s beaten finalists in the Senior Cup, have most successes (45), Liverpool have won the Cup 40 times, Southport 11 and Marine 7. Burscough and Formby are also previous winners, as were the old Bootle club over 100 years ago. Liverpool did not enter the Senior Cup this season. Over the years, the Liverpool Senior Cup has fluctuated in importance. For many years, the Final was usually contested by Everton and Liverpool and only the senior clubs could enter for many years, the numbers being made up by Southport, Tranmere and New Brighton. In the 1950s and early 1960s, however, the Senior Cup assumed much greater importance. Everton were relegated from the First Division at the end of the 1950/51 season, spending three seasons in the Second Division. When they were promoted again in 1954, Liverpool went in the other direction, and the Reds spent eight years in Division 2 until returning to the top flight in 1962. For eleven seasons, therefore, there was no Merseyside league derby. Apart from an FA Cup clash in 1955, the only meetings between the great rivals came about when the two were drawn together in the Senior Cup and this happened in the Final of 1952 and the Semi-Final of 1953. Everton won both those games before massive crowds and they went on to play Tranmere in the 1953 Final which also attracted a great crowd for Ted Sagar’s final game. In 1957, both clubs opened their floodlights and there were home and away “Floodlight Challenge Cup” games (the games in 1957 were watched by 58,771 at Goodison and 46,686 at Anfield) until the clubs could meet again in the First Division. One of those games saw the Liverpool debut of Ian St. John, who scored three times against Everton that night. Everton and Liverpool met three times in the Senior Cup at Goodison, in the Semi-Final of 1958, the final in 1960 and the semi-final of 1961 and in 1959, they met at Anfield in the Final of the Lancashire Senior Cup. Also in 1959, the Liverpool Senior Cup Final was played on neutral ground at Anfield, where Everton beat Tranmere by a remarkable 8 goals to 5 – a record aggregate for the Final. Over the 50 years since 1962, the Liverpool Senior Cup has enjoyed a rather more modest existence, although Everton did turn out their first team squad against Tranmere in 1982/83. Since then, though, the Blues and Reds have used the competition for their Reserve and Youth teams, conceding ground advantage virtually every time to their lower league opponents, thus generating muchneeded revenues for the non-league clubs in particular, who relish the chance of testing their skills against the big boys. St. Helens Town have reached the Semi-Final twice before, losing to Kirkby Town by the only goal in April 1987. A year later, they lost 1-3 at Southport at the same stage. Town’s record victory in the Senior Cup is a 7-1 win over Formby back in November 1986, whilst their heaviest defeat is a 1-5 loss at Prescot Cables in November 1999. The 3-6 reverse three seasons ago at East Villa (the only occasion teams from the Liverpool County Combination were permitted to enter) came after extra-time. Replays are no longer possible, games now being settled by penalties if the scores are level after extra-time. Town have been taken to extra-time on 11 occasions, winning three times. Two ties have gone to penalties, Town winning on both occasions and one game (against Liverpool) went to a replay. Of the five ties lost after extra -time, four have come in the last eight seasons, including three in four years between 2006 and 2009.

A Word from the Manager . . . Hello and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Liverpool Senior Cup quarter final game against Premier League giants Everton FC. Let's hope everyone here tonight enjoys the game and has a safe journey home . Saturday’s 1-2 defeat against league leaders Runcorn Town was doubly disappointing because we have also lost the services of Iain Dyson for tonight’s game and possibly three or four more games, along with Carl Addison, Dale Newbrook and Andy Ledger who are also injured and Danny Clarke who is suspended - we are being stretched somewhat squad wise. The performance on Saturday was probably our best of the season and hopefully will be the kick start we have been looking for and will give us the confidence to start climbing the table. Back to tonight’s game and our opponents Everton - not knowing what sort of side Everton are going to send is irrelevant to me and my staff because we know that it will be a strong well organised side that we will be facing and we will need to play at our maximum to get anything out of the game. What we will be telling the players is to enjoy themselves its not everyday you get to play against a top Premiership side. I know all the lads have been looking forward to the game since the draws been made, not only the Evertonians, but all the players.so it should be a very enjoyable evening. Alf Thompson . . . A month or so ago I received an email from Michael Thompson the son of a former Town midfield player, Alf Thompson (pictured top left). Michael had been browsing the Town website and had spotted his dad pictured alongside his Town team mates, including Bert Trautmann, in a photograph which dated back to the late 1940’s. His initial enquiry was simply ‘did we have any further details of his dad’s time at Town’. Club Secretary Jeff Voller was able to trawl the club’s archives and we were able to furnish Michael with his dad’s playing record which is detailed overleaf and I thought it would be an ideal opportunity to recount in brief the story of a man who served the new Town club in those early post-war years and who continued to follow the club for the remainder of the 20th Century. Alf was born at Christmas (24th December) 1919 and eventually went to work, like many, in the mining industry. His work at Bold Colliery, which co-incidentally overlooked Town’s former Hoghton Road home, spanned the war years and beyond until he retired in the early 1980s. He was married to Winifred Bernadette Griffin at Holy Cross Church St Helens on 20th April 1946 and four children followed: Paul, now 65; Michael, 61; Mark, 56 and Mary born on Christmas Day 1960. Alf, a fine midfield player, made his Town debut in a 0-1 FA Cup Preliminary Round reverse at home to Prescot Cables on the 20th September 1947. He was to open his scoring account on the 13th December the same year in a 2-1 league defeat at UGB and he went on to play almost sixty times for the club during the 1947-48 and 1948-49 season scoring five goals. During this time Alf represented the club in the FA Cup, League Cup, Lancashire Junior Cup and LCFA Challenge Cup. During my email conversations with Michael it became apparent that Alf had been a much sought player. Michael recalled that his mother had told him that Sunderland FC had wanted to sign his dad, but after much deliberation he decided it would have been a move too far from home. During the Second World War years Alf guested for Liverpool, playing opposite wing half to Bob Paisley whom he got to know quite well, before eventually settling at St Helens Town Unfortunately, illness curtailed Alf’s football career in 1951 and following a breakdown he was to fall into severe bouts of depression during which much of his playing memorabilia was discarded. Alf was to never make a full recovery and was reluctant to talk about his playing career. His sporting ability was to continue in other forms as he played cricket into his forties in the St Helens League and was regarded a talented snooker player. A Time To Remember Sadly, Alf passed away on the 24th May 1999 aged 79 but Michael recalls, “Dad had a real love for Liverpool and Town which lasted until his death and he would follow their respective results avidly. “While Dad never really recovered from his illness some of my happiest memories were watching Town at Hoghton Road and their famous FA Vase Wembley win in his company. “I remember the mid to late 1960s going with dad to exotic locations such as Droylsden, Padiham and Horwich RMI – happy days indeed!” The club have been able to supply Michael with an electronic copy of the Town photograph he’d spotted on the website as his only item of memorabilia was the original newspaper cutting of the same. The club were also able to provide him with a copy of the match programme from Bert Trautmann’s final St Helens Town game which saw his dad play against Bangor City in the FA Cup. Michael added, “The programme and my dad’s playing statistics helped to fill in a lot of blank spaces in his career and his life. Dad would be tickled pink to think that he’s still remembered all these years on.” League

Glyn Jones’ Programme Review . . . Programme Review Special – St. Helens Town v Everton Featured in this evening’s review are a selection of programmes and other memorabilia linking St. Helens Town, Everton and the Liverpool Senior Cup. Just over 100 years ago, Everton made the short journey to Anfield to take on Liverpool in the Final of the Liverpool Senior Cup. In those days, Everton and Liverpool produced a joint programme. This arrangement subsisted between 1904 and 1935 and the usual publication had Everton first team and Liverpool Reserves (or vice versa) at home on the same day, occasionally both first teams if they were drawn at home in the FA Cup or just an odd game if played in midweek. Monday, 24th April 1911 was one such occasion and a 16-page programme was issued, which also covered the previous Saturday’s FA Cup Final between Newcastle United and Bradford City, the programme featuring pen-portraits of both teams for the game at Crystal Palace. Also included was a photograph of the Newcastle captain, Colin Veitch, as well as two pages each of nine cameo photographs of the Everton and Liverpool players. There were also the usual features, consisting of in-depth analyses of both Merseyside clubs, an article called “Programme Pickles” featuring individual paragraphs of news from the game nationally and a page of local theatre reviews, principally of the Shakespeare Theatre’s production of Chas. Frohman’s “Alias Jimmy Valentine”, an advert for which featured on the back page. Our pictures show the front cover of the programme and the selected teams from page 9. An article covering the history of the Liverpool Cup appeared on page 15, detailing the formation of the Liverpool Association on 2nd November 1882 at the Tarleton Hotel. The draw for the first competition was made the same day, Bootle beating Everton in the semifinal before accounting for The Ramblers in the Final. This was 10 years before Liverpool came into being. A programme as comprehensive as this was many years ahead of its time. By the time Everton met Liverpool in the semi-final of 1957/58, both clubs had floodlights and the cover shot on the programme for the game at Goodison on 25th March was taken from the Floodlight Challenge Cup game between the two on 9th October. The programme ran to just 8 pages, priced at 3d (half the price of the October souvenir issue) but it still included a full-page Liverpool team photograph. Adverts included one for the now defunct News of the World, Barker & Dobson’s Regal Fruit Drops, Bent’s Old Tom strong ale and rival Higson’s Double Top. There was a notice in the programme which read, “In the unlikely event of a mains failure … keep perfectly still for about three seconds until the emergency lighting NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

comes into operation. We shall be in communication with the Electricity Board and announce over the loudspeakers when full power will be restored.” Everton won that game 2-0 and went to to meet Southport at Haig Avenue in the Final on 10th May. Southport produced an 8-page programme, printed black on amber coloured paper, priced 3d. Adverts on the front cover proclaimed Holland Toffee “Best on Earth” and readers were invited to save money at the Southport CoOperative Society at Beacon House. Southport had finished next to bottom in the old Third Division North, thus qualifying for the new Fourth Division the following season and there was an application form for season tickets for 1958/59, priced at £4.12s (£4.60) for a “reserved chair” and £2.6s (£2.30) for ground. The game finished 0-0 after extra-time (no penalty shoot-outs in those days) so the trophy was shared on this occasion. Twenty years on, Southport lost their league status when they failed to gain re-election. Wigan Athletic took their place and look where they are today! St. Helens Town contested the last Final of the Liverpool Non-League Cup, taking on Marine at College Road on 10th May 1977. The programme was printed in a rather fetching shade of pink on white paper, running to 16 pages and priced at 5p. The inside pages were all pre-printed, with the season’s adverts already in place, the various boxes filled with typed articles and tables and presumably run off on a Gestetner machine, a sort of desk-top publishing format for the 1970s. The two clubs had competed in the Cheshire League that season, Marine finishing 7th and Town 10th. The home team won by the odd goal. Town’s connections with Everton go back to the re-formation of the club in 1946. In their first season 1947/48, they competed in the Liverpool County Combination and when Everton “A” visited Hoghton Road on 6th December 1947, they were hammered by an unbelievable 10-4, a result repeated by Spurs in the First Division clash eleven years later. One member of Town’s hall of fame, Geoff Nulty, went on to play for Everton, scoring twice in 22 league games plus five as a substitute. Nulty initially signed for Burnley (he is pictured showing off his skills in the Football League Review in September 1971), was transferred to Newcastle United, thence to Goodison in 1978. His playing career was ended by a Jimmy Case tackle in the Merseyside Derby on 1st March 1980 – the day the legendary Dixie Dean died – but come the beginning of the 1980/81 season, he had joined the coaching staff as Assistant Manager to Gordon Lee. Although St. Helens Town and Everton have never met before in the Liverpool Senior Cup, it was Everton who visited Hoghton Road to open the floodlights on 25th October 1988 and our picture shows the selected teams. Joe Paladino and Joe Gibiliru appeared in the Town team and Everton included such big names as Wayne Clarke, Paul Bracewell and Paul Power. Chris Foy (now a Premier League referee) ran the line and the current NWCFL Registration Secretary John Cowley was the referee.
