Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome for the first time to our new home in the short term of Brocstedes Park for our North West Counties League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Norton United. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they have had a pleasant trip to visit us here at Brocstedes Park, enjoy their short stay and have a safe journey home after the contest. Just over a fortnight ago Town heard the devastating news that our President and our undoubtedly our most famous ever player Bert Trautmann had passed away at the age of 89. Bert was not only an excellent footballer but from the stories that I have been told and read elsewhere he was a great man and was a great example to all, conducting himself well in a number of difficult situations and endearing himself to most of the people he encountered. My favourite story was one which choked up Bert as he was about to return to a beleaguered Germany and was invited to meet up with the head of the Town Supporters Club the day after a game in which he did not perform to his normal high standards. He turned up at the assigned time and was met by a plethora of Town fans and was given a large trunk full of food to take back to his family and an envelope stuffed with 50 £1 notes. Some mean feat in austere times and a measure of the high esteem in which Bert was held by the Town folk. We will be commemorating Bert’s life and times in this issue of the programme and also holding a minutes silence before the game It doesn't seem too long ago that were well wrapping up the 2012-13 season with consecutive 0-0 draws against Bootle across Ashton at Edge Green Street and then at Bacup in what was the final Premier Division contest of the season. That took our end of season unbeaten run to five matches and saw us comfortably secure our Premier Division status for a record extending the unbeaten run started with a 3-1 victory over this afternoon’s visitors Norton United at Edge Green Street on 16th April in what was an ill tempered affair which saw Town reduced to ten men and the visitors reduced to nine adding to the red card which Andy Mawdsley saw at Norton in the earlier fixture, it could be a busy afternoon for the man in the middle but lets hope the only red on display is in our new kits, which incidentally sees the return to the more normal red and white stripes for this season. We will be hoping to open the season off for the third year in a row with a victory following on from last years win at Colne and the previous years win over the eventual Champions Ramsbottom United. The signs have been promising pre-season with four wins and a draw secured but the real task and the proper games start this afternoon! Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully start the season with a win. Enjoy the Game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Norton United Football Club came into existence in 1989 and joined the Staffordshire Senior League. The club played at Norton Cricket Club and still does to this day. The club laid solid foundations during the first two years and in 1991-92 gained its first success with a win in the League Cup with a victory over Redgate Clayton in the final. We also came runners up two years later. Success started to come more regularly and our first Championship was in 1997 when we completed the double of League and League Cupbeating Adderley Green in the final by 2 – 0. In 1999 the Team won the League and completed the Double by winning the Staffs FA Vase with a win by 2 -1 over Wolverhampton Casuals. The Championship was won by Christmas as we gained maximum points and we finished the season with only one defeat. The Club won the Championship for the third time in 2001 and with it promotion to The North West Counties League. We now play in the NWCFL League Division One. Further success came in the Staffs FA Vase in 2004 and Lee Pugh completed a unique feat of scoring in every round. In 2012 we gained promotion to the Premier Division of the NWCFL and also won the First Division Trophy. We now enter the FA Cup and The FA Vase and we have had some success in both competitions and have travelled to some new places and met new clubs. There have been some significant improvements at Norton United FC over the last few years. We have been able to have the pitch re-laid and a new drainage system installed. The playing surface is now fantastic and allows top quality football to be played. In 2006 a grant was obtained which allowed a junior pitch to be built and all of our junior teams are now able to play on the club grounds. The all weather surface was upgraded at the same time and another considerable sum was spent on the main pitch. This close season saw the completion of the new changing room block. The shell was acquired from Stoke City and the interior was the result of grants from the Football Foundation and the Coalboard Regeneration Trust. The second team now plays in the Staffordshire County Senior League and the third plays in the third division of the league, and both comprise of young players most of whom have made their way through the junior teams at the club. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, our new home for the 2013-14 season. May I thank Jim Whyte and his committee for agreeing to allow us to share their excellent facilities and we look forward to a successful season. I would also like to thank our colleagues at Ashton Town where we spent two and a half seasons being very well looked after by Jimmy Cahill, Billy Pomfrett and Steve Barrett. It’s been a really busy close season for everyone involved at the club. We welcome on board our new Main Club Sponsor Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, Main Shirt Sponsors Freebets.co.uk and Associate Shirt Sponsors The Hardwick Group. We also welcome on board a new Executive Programme Sponsor Wheel Pro as well as a lot of new programme advertisers. We have reverted back to our red and white striped shirts and we must thank our kit and leisurewear partners Umbro Teamwear for their continued support. A big thank you must go to Darryl Picton our Commercial and Sponsorship Manager who joined us during the summer; he’s had an excellent start at Town. I would also like to thanks today’s match sponsors ARC Glass and Bending who will also be sponsoring our Comedy & Curry Night in early December. We also thank Scott Sheedy at The Hardwick Group for sponsoring today’s match ball. Among the constant stream of good news over the break came the sad news of the death of Club President Bert Trautmann who passed away at his home in Spain on 19th July aged 89 years. The club has lost a great friend, true gentleman and a football legend. Today’s programme has a number of articles commemorating Bert’s life and career at Town and we will also be holding a minute’s silence prior to kick off. Today we welcome Norton United, our first opponents of the new campaign - you will find our full fixture list including FA Cup and FA Vase opponents in the centre pages of today’s programme. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a good journey north and that we are all treated to an entertaining encounter. Today’s game is followed by a couple of tough away encounters as we visit Squires Gate on Tuesday evening and then travel to Winsford United next Saturday, despite the latters loss of their manager and numerous players only two weeks ago I am sure they will provide tough opposition. A belated congratulations to last season’s award winners at our Presentation Evening - Lee Crompton picked up the Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year, while Charlie Stoker was voted Young Player of the Year and Ste Edwards the Golden Boot. Supporter John Cole was a worthy winner of the Clubman of the Award. Don’t forget our monthly fundraiser - 500 Club Draw - starts again this month with a £1 securing you a chance of winning one of three prizes (£150, £75 and £25). Enjoy the game John McKiernan Chairman, St Helens Town AFC

Obituary . . . Bert Trautmann 1923-2013 Friday, 19th July saw the passing of St. Helens Town’s most famous “son” - the legendary Bert Trautmann. Bernhard Carl Trautmann was born in Walle, near Bremen, Germany on 22nd October 1923 and upon leaving school, he became an apprentice motor mechanic. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1941 as a radio operator, eventually becoming a paratrooper, winning 5 medals, including an Iron Cross (First Class) on the Eastern Front, but having transferred to the Western Front, was captured by the British in 1944, seeing out the remainder of the War in prison camps in Northwich and Ashton-in-Makerfield. Whilst at Ashton, he played in football matches, initially as an outfield player, but following an injury, went in goal, where his all-round athletic abilities allowed his career to blossom. His pioneering style of attacking the ball when at the feet of his opponents was indicative of his bravery, whilst his running with the ball before kicking it upfield to his teammates was surely a throwback to his earlier outfield career. In 1948, having declined an offer of repatriation, he began playing for St. Helens Town and quickly earned a reputation as a goalkeeper of rare talent, attracting interest from several Football League clubs. His brief career with Town began with a home game against South Liverpool in the Liverpool County Combination on 21st August 1948. On his third appearance, it was reported that “very sportingly the Skelmersdale supporters gave Trautmann a wonderful reception.” Later in the year, the club secretary, John Friar, proclaimed in his programme notes “To put your minds at rest again, I am pleased to inform you that B. Trautmann is Not leaving Sutton. As I have told you before, his whole interests are in the Town Club and he is more than happy with us. But he has been granted leave to visit his parents. He will be going early in the New Year and we shall lose his services for a matter of three matches.” Such was the town’s affection for Bert that they sent him on his way with a large food hamper and a considerable sum of cash, which was an overwhelming gesture of kindness not lost on Bert and, indeed, his family at such a difficult time in Germany’s history. On Bert’s return, he assisted Town to success in the George Mahon Cup competition, his and the club’s first trophy. Runcorn were beaten in the Final at Prescot before a crowd of 9000. As the 1949/50 season opened, with Town in the Lancashire Combination, Second Division, the pressures on St. Helens to part with their star player became ever stronger. An initial approach was received from Burnley, who appeared

. . . Bert Trautmann OBE favourites to sign him, but he subsequently decided on a transfer to Manchester City, which they agreed to defer until Town’s elimination from the FA Cup. That occurred on 1st October 1949 when Town lost 0-3 to Bangor City and the transfer was completed the following Friday. Bert had played 46 games for St. Helens Town, but he returned on three subsequent occasions, twice for friendly matches with Manchester City and once to marry the secretary’s daughter! He kept 14 clean sheets and was sent off on one occasion. Bert’s debut for City came in a game with Bolton Wanderers on 15th October. There were mass protests over his signing by the citizens of Manchester, who had suffered so much at the hands of the Germans in the War. However, the affable keeper did not take long to win over the hearts of the City fans and any hostility soon melted away. He went on to make 508 League appearances for the Maine Road club in a 15-year career, culminating in a testimonial game which attracted a crowd of over 47,000. The game for which Bert is best remembered is the 1956 FA Cup Final against Birmingham City. The Sky Blues won 3-1, but Bert broke his neck when colliding with an opponent’s boot and, ignorant of the true extent of his injury, he bravely played on for the remaining seventeen minutes. The break in his neck was only confirmed some days later and his surgeon told him that even a jolt on the victory parade on the team bus might have killed him. Honours continued to flow for Bert, selected twice for The Football League and he was the worthy recipient of the FWA’s Footballer of the Year Trophy in 1956. After retirement as a player, Bert became manager of Stockport County, subsequently managing two teams in his native Germany and completing his career in charge of Burma, Liberia and Pakistan. He was awarded an honorary OBE in 2004 for his services to AngloGerman relations through football – his Trautmann Foundation is a charitable trust set up to raise funds to foster that aim – and the following year, he was inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. Bert lived out the remaining years of his life in Spain and his survived by his third wife Marlis, two sons and a daughter. GLYN JONES

A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league.

Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place public-access AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. St Helens Town Commercial Manager, Darryl Picton, said: “The idea to forge this partnership came from Fabrice’s story.

. . . Our Charity Partner “Never before have I witnessed such an event that has brought football fans, clubs and players together in support of one man as what happened on that horrific day at White Hart Lane. “The story touched the hearts of everyone and transcended sport. Those events really hit home to everyone at St Helens Town how quickly and unexpectedly tragedy can strike in a community and having access to this essential equipment will save hundreds of lives. “We are proud to be associated with Hearts and Goals and with Fabrice, and we will work tirelessly throughout the year to raise every penny possible for the campaign.” Trudie Lobban MBE, Founder and CEO of Arrhythmia Alliance, said: “We are absolutely delighted St Helens Town AFC have chosen our Hearts & Goals campaign as their official charity campaign. “Hearts & Goals focuses on tackling the UK’s biggest killer, sudden cardiac arrest, which kills 100,000 people in the UK every year. “We have already been able to help communities up and down the country place lifesaving AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and with partners like St Helens we can continue this work. “It is clear all involved at the club are very passionate about the campaign and we are delighted to welcome them on board.” A host of fundraising events are already planned throughout the year, including a Question of Sport tournament evening on Saturday 24th August and a Race Night on Friday 18th October. For full details of events or to make a donation to the campaign contact Darryl Picton on 07908 833 554 or by email at sthelenstownafc@gmail.com Visit www.heartsandgoals.org for more information.

St Helens Town AFC . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in midterm. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing Combination Championship Trophy career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in from Wesley Bridge in 1972 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall

. . . Managers 1946-Present (pictured below) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 19932002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - present Ian Granite (pictured left) became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

An interview with . . . Goalkeeper Bert Trautmann was a footballing legend and countless generations of football followers have grown up being told the tale of how the Manchester City shotstopper broke his neck in the 1956 FA Cup Final, but played on and carried on making brave saves to help his team to a 3-1 victory. Fewer folk beyond the borough know that Trautmann’s football career started in St Helens. Today Town will play a Manchester City Legends team to commemorate the 60th anniversary of his transfer to Maine Road and this week speaking to Mike Critchley at the St Helens Star newspaper from his home in Valencia, Spain, Trautmann revealed that the town of St Helens and the football club where he started still have a special place in his heart. Trautmann came to England after being captured by the Allies during World War II and was held as a prisoner of war at Northwich and then Ashton-in-Makerfield. On his release in March 1948, Trautmann spurned repatriation and began playing for St Helens Town. He became a popular figure – and crowds boomed at Hoghton Road with him between the posts. The warm feelings are mutual. Trautmann said: “I will always have such fond memories of St Helens in my heart. If I had to write a CV my time there would be at the top of the list. “St Helens gave me a new life. The war and the subsequent three years as a POW took eight years out of my life.” “When I came out of the POW camp I was welcomed in to a beautiful community in Sutton. It was a mining district – miners are the same the world over and very warm-hearted and the people took to me.” Crowds at Town’s matches boomed, with numbers on the terraces rocketing from 300 to 6,000 allowing the club to develop their ground with the proceeds. “The club were very kind to me,” Trautmann added, “and at Christmas 1948 I was called to a meeting. When I arrived the 10 members of the committee sat me down and explained the predicament of the club and how times were hard.” “They then presented me with a trunk weighing about 70 kilos, which was packed with everything. Gave me an envelope with £150 in it, which was an awful lot of money back then. It was a sign of my acceptance.” Trautmann was fully integrated into the St Helens sporting scene and even trained up at Knowsley Road, home of St Helens Rugby League Club and now St Helens Town.

Bert Trautmann . . . “Some of the Saints players were friends – especially Stan McCormick, who had just joined from Belle Vue Rangers and I would regularly train with him.” “St Helens motorcyclist Geoff Duke, who went on to win the World Championship six times, was another personal friend. I had a great life there.” Trautmann met and later married the club secretary’s daughter Margaret Friar and credits the time he spent here as being a big part of his learning curve about life. He said: “My first father-in-law Jack Friar was a real gentleman and had a real effect on my life and was like a father to me.” But his performances were catching the eye, particularly during the 1948-49 season – and within months of the start of the following season Trautmann was snapped up on a free transfer by Manchester City. There were protests when Trautmann first started playing in front of the big post war crowds in the English first division – and even some City fans even returned their season tickets. But Trautmann’s ability and personality managed to win them over, although he has his own theory. “It was not my ability or my performances that ‘won them over’. I love people and would always go out and talk to people outside the ground. I think my education really started when I came to England.” His signing for City led to a long and successful career which lasted more than 500 games until 1964 – and from there his managerial stint took him from Stockport County to Burma, Liberia and Pakistan. But he did not sever his connections with Town and the borough and although he cannot make it back for today’s game, he is happy to endorse the Bert Trautmann Trophy. He added: “A few months ago I met up with Town’s Andrew Bilson-Page in Sale and he asked me if I could do anything to help the club. “Now I told the club if I had made millions from playing football, like the players today, I would gladly have gladly given them a million pounds to help them out. But football was different in the 1950s so instead I gave them some items to auction. St Helens Town will always have my best wishes.” These items raised over £1000 at Town’s end of season Presentation Evening in May this year. Club News . . . Town join forces with Local Hero St Helens Town are delighted to announce that they have joined forces with much respected local hero Andy Reid (pictured left with son William). The partnership will see the club work alongside Andy on a number of projects over the coming few years. Andy, a triple amputee war veteran has become an inspiration to young and old alike after fighting back from his horrific injuries to forge an outstanding career as a motivational speaker, author and charity fundraiser. His fundraising exploits for many charities doing things some thought he would never be able to do again including parachuting, abseiling and cross country bike rides have astounded people, gained national media coverage and rightly earned Andy the esteem of people all over the UK. Andy’s first role in partnership with the club was to deliver a motivational session to the clubs playing and coaching staff on the eve of the new season. It is hoped this will inspire us to a much improved season on the pitch to follow what has been a great summer of progression off it. Following this Andy’s new business venture, the Cinema Bar located in St Helens town centre will be sponsoring our home FA Cup tie with Ashton Athletic in August. As the season progresses there are numerous other projects in the pipeline which Andy and the club will work in unison on including fundraising for our Hearts & Goals Campaign and the setting up of an amputee football team in partnership with Andy’s AIM project which will also see our coaching staff assist with the development of players. Andy will also join us at our end of season sporting dinner as one of two guest speakers. The multi award winning hero’s inspirational story of triumph over adversity was published in his new book Standing Tall in February 2013. www.andyreid.org

Getting back to Business . . . Sitting at home on the 17th March last year watching the horrific events unfold at White Hart Lane, it suddenly dawned on me how much I missed the regular day to day involvement with a semi-pro football club. Myself suffering ill health and heart related problems at that time, those emotional scenes and the collective will of the entire football world that Fabrice Muamba would pull through, lit a fire deep inside me and that day paved the way for my return to St Helens Town. That most unusual of days also planted a seed in my mind that somehow, someway I wanted to make a difference. When I met with chairman John McKiernan in the spring and was offered the opportunity to come into the club with a remit to develop the commercial activity and brand awareness, it was the perfect opportunity to combine both passions and our partnership with Hearts and Goals was born. Having followed Fabrice’s incredible recovery and the subsequent development of the Hearts and Goals campaign, it was an obvious step to make contact with the charity to offer our support. The response from Trudie Lobban MBE, the charities CEO was one of great excitement at the idea of our partnership and as the finer details were drawn up it became clear that both the charity, and St Helens Town were looking at a mutually exciting progression. As I work hard each week developing the clubs commercial partnerships, I am always thinking about how our corporate links can assist with our fundraising and to date we have also developed tie-ins with sponsors, celebrities and local schools to assist in our campaign. The last few years have been a difficult period of transition for St Helens Town having been forced away from our home town, but with a return to the town now on the horizon, a new temporary home, the charity partnership and new sponsors on board, there is a real feeling of renewed vigour, excitement and expectation around the club and I like many cannot wait for the new season to get underway. I would like to welcome everyone to Brocstedes Park, our new home for 2013-14 for today’s opening day fixture. I hope you enjoy today’s game and I hope many of you can help in someway to support our campaign throughout the season, as we publish details of our fundraising events. A fantastic pre-season of progression as however been tarnished with loss of our esteemed Club President Bert Trautmann, who sadly passed away at his home in Spain on the 19th of July aged 89. Bert has been a wonderful friend to our club for many years and his loss has left an indelible scar on the club. I hope you will join us in paying tribute to this iconic man by respectfully observing a minutes silence before today’s kick off. If you would like to make a donation to Hearts and Goals, you can do so today here at the club, or by visiting www.justgiving.com/sthelenstown. If any visiting clubs would like further information on fundraising for a defibrillator at your club, please email me via sthelenstownafc@gmail.com, or you can find me somewhere around the club today and I will be happy to have a chat with you. Warm regards Darryl Picton - Commercial and Sponsorship Manager
