Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League contest against our friends from Padiham. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. This afternoon sees our last scheduled home match for almost a month as the next time we are here as hosts will be on Tuesday 4th October when Stone Domines are the visitors. We obviously have an “away” game here against our landlords Ashton Town in the Liverpool Senior Cup on Tuesday 20th September. As such with a long run of away games to come over the next few weeks Jimmy and the lads will be looking to get out of the current rut we are in and hopefully get back to winning ways against Padiham. The poor run of form continued on Monday evening when we took the short trip to Runcorn Town and after a good start from the hosts we found ourselves two down and seemingly with a mountain to climb but a goal a couple of minutes before half time when Carl Addison turned a loose ball home after the home goalkeeper had failed to hold a free kick gave the visitors a lifeline. The visitors came out after the break like a different team and took the game to their hosts creating plenty of chances before Carl Addison was again on the spot to turn another loose ball home. The feeling was that the next goal was going to be decisive and the hosts netted with less than ten minutes to play against the run of play before rubbing salt in the wounds netting a late 4th as the visitors pressed forward in an attempt to level matters.

There were some green shoots of recovery beginning to break through on Monday evening and hopefully some of the injured and unavailable players from midweek will be back in contention for this afternoon’s contest. Managers regardless of their level always welcome a selection headache and hopefully Jimmy is pondering over who to select for this afternoon’s contest. Padiham have not have the best of starts but will be looking to repeat their exploits from last season when they achieve a fourth position finish. In Town Today . . . It might be hard to imagine today but in the immediate years following the establishment of Padiham Football Club in November 1878 the "Caldersiders" as they were then known were considered one of Lancashire's soccer pioneers and one of the better Club sides in England. The Padiham Football Club were in at the birth of the Lancashire Football Associations Senior Cup competition in 1879 , reached the third round proper of the F.A. Cup in season 1883 - 84 and beat Burnley F.C. 60, 7-0, 9-1 and 4-2 in their first four encounters . Gates of over 2,000 were not uncommon for the visits of teams like Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Burnley and other local rivals to Padiham F.C.'s ground which was originally situated on the banks of the River Calder at the end of Wyre Street in Padiham and initially leased from the Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall. At present the site is occupied by the Potterton Myson Limited Main Gas factory and nothing remains of the Clubs original ground which witnessed many encounters with Clubs that later achieved Football League status. In fact it was the setting up of the Football League and the ensuing loss of fixtures with the leading Clubs, as well as the legalisation of professionalism within football that ended Padiham's initial decade of success. Being an ardent stalwart of the fight waged from Lancashire for the legalisation of professionalism in football, Padiham's progressive outlook at the time ironically helped fashion the stranglehold football finance came to have on small town Clubs, in hindsight it condemned Padiham to an ongoing fight for survival. Unable to secure the services of players able to compete with the bigger surrounding towns and cities, gates dropped and as a result reduced income meant Padiham had to restrict its activities to playing in the Lancashire Combination Football League and at times the local minor leagues.

. . . Padiham Football Club The outbreak of World War One curtailed Padiham Football Club's involvement in active football altogether at the end of the 1915- 1916 season, and the loss of their ground during the War meant that Padiham Football Club lay dormant. The rebirth of Padiham Football Club came about in 1949 with the opening of the "Arbories" Memorial Sports Ground in Padiham on August 20th 1949 when 1777 spectators turned up to see the Club's opening Lancashire Combination fixture of the 1949- 50 football season. In 1982 , Padiham Football Club became founder members of the North West Counties Football League , however in 1990 they left the league and joined the West Lancashire Football League where they played their football for ten seasons. Padiham Football Club returned to the North West Counties Football League for the 2000- 2001 season and to date have spent over £400,000 on upgrading their "Arbories" Memorial Football Ground. Padiham’s period back in the North West Counties League saw them initially consolidate their position with a couple of mid table finishes before their third season saw them finish fourth. A blip occurred in the 2003/4 when they finished 12th. The 2004/5 season saw Padiham start a period where they challenged for promotion finishing fourth, fifth and third just missing out on promotion. Another blip saw them finish in twelfth position before last season’s runners-up spot saw them get to the promised land of the Premier Division for the 2009/10 season. Their first season in the top flight of the Vodkat League Premier Division saw them win eighteen matches netting seventy one times in the process to secure a tenth position finish. The off season saw a change of management with Craig Chadwick taking over in the hot seat from Graham Howarth. A word from the Dugout . . . Hello and a warm welcome to Edge Green Street and especially to all the players, officials and supporters of our visitors today Padiham FC. The past couple of weeks have been difficult to say the least with a run of poor results and performances. The indifferent results continued here last Saturday against second placed Winsford United were we contributed to our own downfall by having a mad couple of minutes either side of half time when we conceded two avoidable goals ultimately which cost us dearly. On Monday at Runcorn Town we produced an excellent second half performance to recover from a two goal deficit only to succumb to two late goals. After working so hard to get back into the game, it was extremely disappointing for all concerned not to take something from this game. It is vital that everyone around the club continues to work hard and strive for improvement in this difficult period. The past two performances have certainly given optimism for positive results in the very near future. The second half show at Runcorn was the back to the standards we set at the beginning of the season and we must return to those levels on a consistent basis. We have taken an opportunity to strengthen the squad with new faces arriving in the shape of Nick Jackson, Liam Johnson and Steve O’Brien and familiar faces Karl Alridge and Scott Baker returning to the fold. We feel that these players will add quality and depth to the squad and coupled with return of a host of injured player the playing rota is now looking much healthier. Padiham will provide another stern test this afternoon, they had a highly successful campaign last year and I’m sure that they will be aiming to build on that this time around. The squad will be prepared and raring to go for a game that will hopefully see us gain a positive result. Enjoy the game and get behind the lads. Andy Clough Assistant Manager

A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West counties Football League Premier Division against our friends and rivals from Padiham FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have enjoyed a good journey and are treated to an entertaining encounter. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to today’s match officials Messrs Hayes, Connett and Frazer who have travelled across from Manchester. Six successive defeats, following our promising start has left everyone a little deflated although there have been some highlights during our last two games against Winsford United and Runcorn Town. In both games we battled hard in the second halves having given our opponents leads. Monday evening’s trip to the Pavillions saw Town go two down to Runcorn before staging a comeback as Carl Addison struck just before the break and levelled the scores on 75 minutes. In between, the lads created some gilt edge chances, three in about five minutes at the start of the second half and while our opponents did also go close I think most people felt ’the next goal wins’. Unfortunately, as Town push for the winner we were caught on the break with two late efforts and the night ended in disappointment. Today’s game is our seventh home fixture of the opening six weeks of the campaign and as a consequence we now enter a period on our travels with up to five successive away game (both league and cup competitions). Our next home fixture looks likely to be on Tuesday 4th October when Stone Dominoes are our visitors. However, it’s not going to be the next time we’re at Edge Green Street as we come ‘home’ as the away team having been drawn against our ‘landlords’ in the Liverpool Senior Cup on Tuesday 20th September, kick off 7.45pm Back to today’s game and having finished a very creditable fourth in last season’s league standings Padiham have had a mixed start this season but have recently seen victories over Bacup and Squires Gate. They did however lose out 1-2 to Rammy on Wednesday evening. Town will know they have another tough task on their hands this afternoon and will be attempting to ‘stop the rot’ and register that all important victory. There’s been a number of ‘new’ faces drafted including Scott Baker, Liam Johnson, Karl Aldridge, Stephen O’Brien, Nick Jackson and Dylan Corrie - I’m sure they will make excellent additions to the squad. The club’s reserve outfit earned their first victory of the season in the St Helens Combination Premier Division as they ran out 1-0 winners over title favourites Diamonds FC in doing so they bounced back from their opening day loss at Junction FC (0-3). Congratulations go the our two recent Man of the Match recipients - Rob Smith (v Bootle) pictured above and Andy Ledger (v Winsford Utd) pictured right. Match Report & Photos . . . Saturday 3rd September 2011 NWCFL, Premier Division St Helens Town 1-4 Winsford United Town sank to a fourth consecutive league defeat and the third home loss on the bounce as Winsford United recorded a scoreline which flattered them in a game that was much closer than the scoreline suggests. Town had the first chance of what was to be a dour opening half hour of the contest. Iain Dyson playing in the right back role used his more attacking instincts to cut inside from the right flank and unleash a shot which Matt Conkie in the visitors goal held onto. At the other end Winsford had a chance when Matt Ward found himself in space and tried his luck from 25 yards out debutant Nick Jackson in the Town goal parried the effort and the loose ball was cleared by the home defence. The keeper was not to relish the next Winsford attack however as a mishit cross from Sam McKay on the right wing caught the stopper out lobbing over him to put the visitors into an early lead which they would not relinquish. The next chance was not created until just before the half hour mark when Leon Williams showed his turn of pace to get away from the chasing defenders and get to the byline, he had little support and his eventual ball into the box when some teammates arrived was claimed by Conkie. With Town on the front foot the hosts were looking to level matters and another debutant Liam Johnson could have opened his Town account on 33 minutes. Andy Ledger and Leon Williams linked well with the latter sending in a dangerous cross from the right wing which Johnson almost headed home but in the end evaded all in the 6 yard box and was cleared. Two goals in the minutes either side of the half time interval were to effectively determine the destination of the three points. With the visitors looking content to kill time and go into the break a goal to the good Town were caught in possession and Winsford’s counter saw the ball moved down the left, the ball appeared to have gone out of play but the throw was not awarded and Dean McGregor’s initial effort was blocked by Jackson in the home goal only to break to Andy Hurst who the referee rather generously adjudged to have been impeded and a spot kick was awarded which Ward sent home. It was to be the same player who netted the third less than a minute after the restart when a volleyed clearance by Dyson was sliced to Ward and he returned the ball with interest into the net. Town responded by reducing the deficit just before the hour when a good move saw Johnson released down the left wing and his cross found Williams he took the ball down and unleashed an effort which Conkie parried but the ball broke back to Ledger and he took the ball down on his left before feeding an inviting pass to Carl Addison on the edge of the box and he fired the ball home off the underside of the crossbar. As Town pressed to get back into the game the visitors had plenty of space to exploit on the counter attack and this saw chances fall to McGregor who cut inside from the right and saw his effort pushed over by Jackson and later on the same player had another effort from the edge of the area which Jackson again kept out. With time running out Peter Birch sent a left wing cross into the area which Williams took down and shot just over the bar. The hosts were caught on the counter in added on time when Aiden Haughton was released by a long ball and looked to be offside but play continued and he took his chance well firing home from just inside the area. Diamonds are firm favourites to win the title this year and after Town’s opening day defeat (0-3 to Junction FC) on Saturday it was always going to be a tough affair. Town produced a fine battling performance and soaked up wave after wave of attack from the host side but stood firm with some fine defending and a fine saves and handling from ‘keeper Steve Leather. The only strike from the game came half way through the 1st half against harsh windy conditions when Brian Cross attacked the front post from a corner and headed the ball past the static keeper. From there it was hard work and rare glimpses of a clear chance to settle the game, overall an excellent display against a team that were not use to never scoring never mind losing! Well done boys, lets kick on from here!

Runcorn Town v St Helens Town . . . Monday 5th September 2011 NWCFL, Premier Division Runcorn Town 4-2 St Helens Town The green shoots of recovery looked to be breaking through the ground for St Helens Town only to be harshly trampled upon as their hosts took all three points with a brace of late break away goals. The hosts threatened to blow St Helens away in the early stages as their pace saw them pour forward again and it was only a matter of time until they broke the deadlock. Seven minutes into the contest an attack down the right saw Emini Adegbenro release James McShane who found himself 1on1 with Nick Jackson whom he rounded and slotted into the empty net. Further pressure saw Adegbenro’s dangerous cross from the right have to be turned behind by Mike Burns before the lead was doubled just before the half hour mark as Scott Burton released Warren Bellew and he beat the advancing Jackson to give the visitors a mountain to climb. A comeback did not look on the cards as the hosts dominated possession and it took a rare foray forward for the visitors to halve the arrears. A St Helens move was stopped by foul means and from the resultant free kick Karl Aldridge sent the ball goalwards and the home stopper could not hold onto the slippery ball and Carl Addison fired the loose ball home. The interval was just what St Helens needed and they came out for the second period a different side, taking the game to their hosts and creating plenty of chances. Liam Johnson turn and shot from the edge of the box was held by Karl Wills before the visitors had a good shout for a penalty turned down as an attack down the right saw the ball delivered into the box and Darren Kinsey blocked the cross with his arms extended but Mr Gibbons deemed no offence to have been committed. Further pressure saw Andy Ledger deliver from the right and his cross just evaded Leon Williams centrally and Stephen O’Brien on the far post. At the other end Bellew shot across goal and McShane just failed to turn the ball home on the far post. The St Helens pressure began to tell as Johnson sent a right wing corner into the box substitute Scott Baker connected with the ball on the slide and his effort went just over the bar. Moments later Baker was involved again as his turn and shot on the edge of the box was spilt by Wills and it rebounded off the right upright before rolling across the line where Addison was on hand again to turn the ball home and level matters. With this visitors’ pressing forward trying to win the game there was always a chance they would be caught on the counter and this proved to be the case on 81 minutes when Runcorn substitutes Ryan Malone and Jason Carey linked with the latter firing home on the front post. Matters were resolved late on when after further St Helens pressure the Runcorn added a fourth, McShane added his second of the contest and the 100th goal of his Runcorn career firing home from the edge of the box after being found by Burton to end the visitors hopes of getting a return out of the contest. NWCF League News . . . Padiham manager Craig Chadwick believes his side have now turned the corner after a slow start to this season’s campaign. A fourth place finish last season left an air of optimism around the Arbories, although disappointing early results left Craig with a bit of work to do on refocusing his squad on a promotion challenge. He believes now, though, that the Storks are now back on track. “At the start of last season the target was to better what we did the season before, which was 60 points and 10th place finish, so it was a fantastic finish for us. We had a great run towards the end of the season, in the last third of the season but I think that had a bit of a knock on effect to the start of this season. Pre season is always difficult as some players have family commitments, some are teachers and can only take holidays at certain times, and it’s hard to put a full strength side out at times. Ideally you want to hit the ground running in preseason and start as you mean to go on, but last season we had a very disrupted few weeks. This season, our pre-season was completely different as I had a settled squad and had only added three or four new faces, and they all knew they were battling for positions for the starting eleven, but the competition was good. Unfortunately as the season began, we had a couple of injuries and suspensions, and a couple of work commitments for a couple of players as well, which meant that a squad that had around 18 first team players was suddenly down to 14 or 15. Maybe in the back of some players minds they felt that there wasn’t as much competition for places as they had thought there would be, and maybe they took their foot off the gas a little bit, because they knew they’d been playing as there wasn’t really anyone else. I think we fell into the old trap of being a little bit complacent and maybe just expected things to happen. Also, teams had seen what we were about and that we liked to play the ball about, and they were getting in our faces and making life difficult for us. “Unfortunately we didn’t deal with that in the early games and it took us four or five games to get sorted out. We changed personnel around a bit for our last three games and picked everyone up a bit because people were getting a bit down in the dumps, because they thought it was just going to happen for us. But thankfully it wasn’t long before we got players back, they were back to a situation where they were all playing for positions, and we are honest and open with them, we tell them that if they do their job and perform they keep their place, and they know that from last season. The first game of the season was at Runcorn Town, which wasn’t an easy start with them just being promoted, and they are a big side. They bombarded us a bit and we didn’t play particularly well, but we got away with a point and we’d hoped we would kick on from there. But then we played AFC Blackpool at home, and got a bit sloppy and gave two bad goals away, but we were never going to panic after two draws. We then went to Silsden and we didn’t turn up on the night, we lost 1-0 but it could have been two or three, and we were extremely disappointed. To make matters worse we came back home to play Ashton Athletic in the FA Cup , a game where everyone was aware how important it was to try and get a cup run, and that was our worst performance for a long time. We were absolutely shocking and I don’t think we played as badly as that at any time last season. The players were made well aware that the performance wasn’t acceptable, we changed things around a bit, sorted a few things out in the dressing room and from then on we went on to produce three excellent performances. We had some good long chats in the dressing room after some of the bad performances and had some very open discussions, with some of the players putting points across and telling us where they think we are going wrong. I think they respect having the chance to do that, and there is a decent morale in the dressing room as a result. I’d like to think that is us back on track now, although the players have to realise they have to keep their feet on the ground and keep working. But that attitude got us three good results, a draw at Glossop and home wins against Bacup and Squires Gate. They worked hard, earned the right to play, and we played well too. It was frustrating to be throwing silly points away, especially in the first three games, but hopefully we’re back on track now. Glyn Jones’ Programme Review . . . Blast from the past ST. HELENS TOWN v HORWICH RMI Cheshire League Challenge Cup 1st Round – Tuesday, 19th August 1975 This programme marked Town’s first season in the Cheshire League, both clubs moving from the Lancashire Combination, the standard of which league had declined gradually over the years following the launch of the Northern Premier League in 1968. St. Helens Town’s programmes in the mid-70s were 6-page, fold-out, triptych style productions, with advertising rights acquired by Allsports Publicity Ltd of Wembley and standard pages printed in advance by Speed Printing of London EC2, a format adopted by many non-league clubs over the years. One page was entitled “Club Notes” and on this occasion, the first home game of the season, there was a welcome to new signings Ken Humphries, Bill Jaycock, Ronnie Burns and goalkeeper Paul McKay. The programme, priced at 2p, featured the team lines surrounded by small ads, including Helena House Travel Services, Cecil Dromgoole stationer, R. Lunt high class jewellers, Sutton Carpets, Junction Motors (for your new Daf) and local hostelries The Clarendon Hotel (College Street) and The Travellers’ Rest in Crab Street, neither of which survive today. They’re in a different league STALYBRIDGE CELTIC v VAUXHALL MOTORS Blue Square Bet North – Monday, 29th August 2011 My second visit to Tameside in 7 days took me to Bower Fold, a ground frequented by Town in their Cheshire League days of the 70s and early 80s. The gulf between the clubs is now two clear divisions and, with more performances like this Celtic, who won 4-2, could well be in the Conference next season. The Bower Bulletin is a 40-page colour, glossy production, priced at £2. This is a very good publication, despite gates averaging only 460. The Celtic club are a full-time outfit and need to get bigger crowds to fulfil their ambition of promotion, but if the standard of the programme is anything to go by, the future looks promising. There are a lot of adverts (including one for a church!) but equally, there are several well written articles, including comprehensive statistical analyses for both teams. A crowd of 508, in appalling weather, saw Celtic retain their unbeaten start to the season and they remain in second place, two points behind near neighbours Hyde.
