Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Ramsbottom United. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. It has been a tumultuous period since we last convened here to take on Bacup Borough ten days ago. That game saw us play well enough in the first half to have put the game beyond our high flying hosts Liam Pearson supplied the ball for Iain Dyson to score the only goal of the opening period. The second half saw the visitors come back into the game and dominated possession but they gained a point in the most bizarre fashion as after an awful injury to Luke Faulkner (pictured right) the ball was caught by Ian Frazer after play had continued and once play restarted Bacup were able to convert the resultant penalty. The next two away matches saw Town turn in two of the most disappointing displays of the season. First last Tuesday saw us exit the Vodkat League, Challenge Cup at First Division leaders AFC Blackpoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mechanics Ground. In atrocious weather conditions Town played the first half with the wind and rain at their backs but could not turn these factors and the lions share of possession it was our hosts that went into the interval 2-1 up and then in the second period they did what we could not and used the weather conditions to induce further pain on their visitors as we sank to a 5-1 reverse. Matters did not improve on Saturday as we visited Premier Division front runners New Mills and sank to a club record defeat as we were on the wrong end of a 9-0 scoreline. The previous worse came on 29th January 1966 when a visit to Fleetwood saw Town go down 9-1 and a couple of months later conceded nine again this time at Netherfield in a 9-2 loss. After the game Lee Riley decided to step down as manager a few weeks ahead of schedule and we would like to place on record our thanks for the efforts he and his assistant Phil Burton put into the club this season. Iain Dyson has taken the reins with immediate effect. Congratulations to James Croxton, pictured with Phil Burton following the 1-1 draw with Bacup Borough, who was voted the St Helens Town Player of the Month for February 2011. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter against our friends and rivals from Ramsbottom United FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own support are treated to an entertaining encounter. The last week or so will be one that Town fans will want to forget very quickly - starting with the horrendous injury to Luke Faulkner in our home fixture against Bacup Borough and lack of sportsmanship from our visitors which followed. The game ended 1-1 but left a sour taste! Not for the first time Bacup added insult to injury when (apart from three players) they failed to take up our post match hospitality and simply left the ground without a word. Last Tuesday saw Town exit the Vodkat League Challenge Cup with a 5-1 defeat at Division One high flyers AFC Blackpool. The weather conditions didn’t help and our hosts certainly made the best of the situation but Town were woeful and lacked any cohesion, especially in the second half. This poor display was to pale into insignificance as the lads were on the wrong end of a 9 (nine) - 0 hammering at New Mills last Saturday. New Mills were excellent and some of their football and a number of their goals were well crafted or very well struck. However, Town were well off the pace and I can only recollect one goal bound attempt throughout the 90 minutes. It was 5-0 at half time and we were lucky it wasn’t more; the early second half dismissal of Danny Jarrett for a second yellow compounded our situation and it was a relief when the referee blew the whistle to end the game. The post match debate was a balance between the quality of the opposition and the complete capitulation by our lads. I recently reported that Lee Riley had had some changes in his work circumstances which was likely to mean he would not be available due to shift work come the end of April. Lee decided to resign immediately after the New Mills game (effectively bringing the decision to step down forward by a few weeks) and Iain Dyson has now been installed as the new Town manager. I would personally like to offer my sincere thanks to Lee and his assistant Phil Burton who have worked tirelessly this season in a bid to make the club competitive something they have done very well with the odd exception. I’m sure we all wish them well whatever the future may bring. Ramsbottom United arrive at Edge Green Street as real title contenders and will provide tough opposition in their bid to chase down New Mills. They will need a bit of luck as we enter the final weeks of the campaign and hopefully tonight we won’t make it too easy for them to take maximum points. Our two club’s will met again towards the end of April at the Riverside ground. I have no doubt we will recover from the last 10 days of heartache and tonight could be a good time to start. Town now have three successive away trips at Ashton Athletic on Saturday, followed by a mid-week trip to Stone Dominoes (22nd March) and then Atherton LR on Saturday 26th March. Our next home fixture sees Squires Gate the visitors on Wednesday 30th March. Please join us in the clubhouse for the usual postmatch analysis and the St Helens Town man of the match presentations. In Town Today . . . In 1966, Ramsbottom United Football Club was founded by the club’s present chairman Harry Williams who has without doubt been the driving force that has taken the Rams from the public park pitch and the Bury Amateur League to today’s Riverside Ground and the North West Counties Football League. In fact, his influence upon the club has seen the ground renamed in August 2010 to “The Harry Williams Riverside Stadium.” The club moved leagues in 1967 and ended up playing the next eighteen years in the Bolton Combination before the move in 1987 to the Manchester League. At the end of the 1994-95 season, the club applied to the North West Counties Football League and following substantial ground improvements, were admitted into the `pyramid` in June 1995. The Rams first season in the North West Counties Football League couldn’t have been much better. Although finishing in 12th position, they managed to bring in their first silverware at semi-professional football by lifting the Second Division Trophy after a fine 2-1 victory of Cheadle Town Football Club at Darwen FC’s Anchor Ground. During the 1996-97 season the club made great strides in achieving their goal of becoming one of the valley’s top side. After one of the most dramatic endings to a season, they lifted the Second Division Championship by pipping local rivals Haslingden Football Club on goal difference on the last day of the season. Throughout the season, they broke all previous club records with winning victories of 9-0 (Stantondale), 8-1 (Oldham Town) and they also went on an amazing league run of winning all of their first 17 home fixtures. The club also started the mammoth task of erecting floodlights at their Riverside Ground. The lights had to be in place way before the start of the new season, as without them no admittance would be given and promotion would not have been possible. For the very first time in their history, the club entered the FA Vase but were defeated in the preliminary round by Tetley Walker. A slight disappointment but nevertheless it was another step forward for the club. The 1997-98 season saw the club play football at a much higher standard, and with it came some difficulties. The first couple of months saw the team struggle on the field, but as time went by, they produced some excellent football which saw them climb the first division. Most notable of performances was against local rivals Darwen FC, Rossendale United FC and Clitheroe FC, all of whom could not defeat the Rams at home or away in any competition played - a feat worthy of praise. The season ended with the club finishing in 17th position in division one, but once again they managed to bring in more silverware, albeit with the Reserve side who managed to beat Maine Road FC Reserves in the Final of the Reserve Division Trophy. In 1998-99 the club once again stepped forwards by entering the FA Cup for the very first time. A fine run in the world’s oldest cup competition saw the Rams make it to the Third Qualifying Round, only to lose to Conference side Southport FC, 829 visitors turned out in atrocious conditions, easily breaking the previous record of 464. The 19992000 season turned out to be one of the best seen since the club's championship winning season of 1996-97. After a slow start, the Rams managed to finish the season in third position, on 79 points - easily their best in the clubs history until 2010. Russell Brierley became the clubs top scorer in any one season with 39 league and cup goals. However, more was to come during the 2000-01 season...! After a poor start to the 2000/1 season, two wins and three defeats, the Rams slipped into mid-table obscurity but in the ranks hopes were still high. By mid-November the team had slowly started to catch up on the top clubs but with the atrocious weather conditions, games were now starting to be postponed and at one stage the Rams only played one game in four weeks. As always with Ramsbottom United, they managed to grind out some excellent results with the most notable one being the 3-0 win over local rivals Rossendale United on Boxing Day. As Easter arrived the team were only 9 points adrift of the top team, Rossendale. Despite winning at Rossendale, Ramsbottom could not match Rossendale in the run in. Whilst enjoying many successes in such a short space of time, the Rams also went through much turmoil after the sad loss of manager Ken Bridge in 2001 – a desperate loss Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . Ramsbottom United for the club and Ken is remembered now with the main gates named in his honour. Mike Kelly took over the reigns in May 2001 but he only took the club to 15th position. A disappointing return and he resigned the following season and in stepped Andy Grimshaw. Results were still not great but the club found themselves once more moving up the league and playing some attractive football in the process. It came as a huge blow to the club and supporters when Grimshaw resigned in November 2003. Vince Overson took over and a lot of expectations were placed on him from the outset and as the 2003-04 season came to an end, the results failed to materialize and they finished the season in 17th position and everything seemed to be going against the Rams and Overson resigned in May 2004. Derek Egan who took over in the hotseat; Egan brought an entire new squad to the Riverside during the 2004-05 season and they played some of the best football scene in years as they marched up the table, the Rams finished the season in 5th position. More gloom was to descend on the Riverside as Egan resigned after failing to reach an agreement over team finances. In May 2005, the club appointed Lee Sculpher as their fifth manager in four years he had guided Clitheroe FC to the NWCFL league division one championship in 2003-04. and although the 2005-06 season did not live up to expectations but the Bolton Hospitals Cup was secured and the team finished in their lowest ever position in division one (18th). The next season saw the club finished in a credible 8th position. They also won the Bolton Hospitals Cup for the second successive season defeating Tempest United 5-1 in the Final, again played at the Reebok Stadium. The 2007-08 season started very well but after six defeats Sculpher was under pressure and he resigned after a win over St Helens Town. Neil Hart was appointed as first team manager and assistant manager, however, despite winning the Hospital's Cup for the third consecutive season results once again proved to be unconvincing and Neil resigned from the club at the end of the 2007 season. During May the club interviewed many prospective managers and it was Andy Feeley who was overwhelmingly voted in as the new manager. He has had to start from scratch as many of the players who played under Hart have decided to join their former manager at Turton but the club are still optimistic that a serious challenge for silverware during the 2008-09 season can finally materialise after such a barren period of success. However, Feeley left the club in January 2009 and Paul Williams, his assistant, was handed the job in a caretaker role. A disappointing run of results towards the end of the 2008-2009 saw Williams not offered the full time job and he was released. Two weeks later, however, two former players â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Anthony Johnson, returning to the club after a spell at Clitheroe and Bernard Morley, who had already rejoined the Rams in January 2009 from the same Unibond outfit, were given the full-time position in a player-manager capacity with John Hunter assisting them as coach. After a disappointing 5-0 defeat in the opening day of the season to the eventual run-away champions Newcastle Town, the Rams finished an outstanding fourth in the table and climbed to second at Christmas â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not bad considering we were bottom after the first round of games!!! The side completed a ten-year best points total of 81 and a clubrecord of 14 away victories (only Newcastle performed better in 2009/10). And the dual management team were also rewarded for an unbeaten April 2010 by being given the Vodkat League Premier Division Managers of the Month award, the first such award for many years whilst Andrew Sensale received the Player of the Month gong in October 2009, again the first player to be recognised in this way for some time. Match Report Saturday 5th March 2011; Vodkat League, Premier Division St Helens Town 1-1 Bacup St Helens Town’s unbeaten streak was extended to four matches but the manner of the Bacup equaliser and the subsequent goading of the home supporters by a section of the visiting team left a nasty taste in the mouths’ of the hosts. The hosts started the games off well and as early as the 6th minute carved out a great chance. Liam Pearson did well on the left of the Bacup area beating three defenders before shooting 10 yards out being denied by a fine save from visiting stopper Paul Horridge. Further Town pressure saw debutant James Gardner (pictured) beat his marker on the right wing before sending a good ball into the box which found Pearson and his first time effort saw a quick reflex save from Horridge. With a quarter of an hour played James Croxton crossed towards Iain Dyson and his knock down was seized upon by Pearson who unleashed another effort on goal and again he was thwarted by Horridge who was at this stage singlehandedly keeping his team in the contest. On 23 minutes Town deservedly broke the deadlock, Pearson chased down Gareth Wager on the Town left and as the defender dawdled on the ball the striker disposed him before advancing into the box and squaring to Iain Dyson who slotted home centrally to put the host into the lead. The remainder of the half belonged to the hosts as they continued to dominate possession and played the game in the Bacup half. A further chance fell to defender Luke Faulkner with the clock running down at the end of the half. A right wing corner was half cleared and broke to the centre half who had options to his right but chose to shoot and again Horridge was on hand to avert the danger. The visitors looked like the team the form book suggested were visiting Edge Green Street after the interval and began to dominate the second period and ten minutes into the half Kingsley Williams found himself latching onto a through ball and 1on1 with Tom White in the Town goal and the stopper stood up well to keep the subsequent effort out. Further pressure saw Williams link with Tommy Turner but Faulkner did well to block the strikers’ effort at full stretch. Just before the hour Croxton latched onto a defensive error to get into the box his initial effort was parried and the ball broke back to him but his second effort ended up in the side netting. Another chance fell to Turner as he cut inside from the right of the area but could only shoot wide of the left hand upright. The game turned on a bizarre moment and an horrendous injury to Town’s Luke Faulkner, a ball was sent into the box and as keeper White came to punch the ball away Faulkner was caught between the Town stopper and a Bacup attacker as Faulkner went down he fell awkwardly on his left arm and a severe break was suffered, he regained he feet not realising the severity of the injury and play continued. White realising the nature of the injury was calling vociferously for play to be stopped but to no avail as a ball was sent back into the area it was caught by a Town player to ensure that no further harm was to come to Faulkner and the game was halted whilst the stricken defender received treatment. After a 25 minute stoppage the game restarted and to the chagrin of most of the massed ranks Bacup were awarded a penalty. The age of sportsmanship is clearly a bygone era as Daniel Cocks stepped up to send the ball home and in a even more classless moment three of the Bacup players including the penalty taker and Adrian Bellamy then proceeded to goad the home supporters who were behind the goal. Both sides had a good chance each to win the contest in the final quarter of an hour. The visitors saw Cocks get into the box but his effort was cleared from danger. Before Town’s chance both sides were reduced to ten men as Franny Foy and Marc Taylor took an early bath the latter for hauling down Daley Woods as he was bearing down on goal. From the resultant free kick Karl Brown sent his effort over the bar and the sides shared the spoils. St. Helens Town AFC – A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

A Brief History Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. Ninth place was achieved in 2009/10 but Bickerstaffe stepped down at the end of the season and Lee Riley was promoted to manager, with Phil Burton (ex-Prescot Cables) as his assistant. A number of new faces have joined the club, most significantly striker Liam Pearson and goalkeeper Dale Newbrook and this combination of youth and experience is looking to improve on last season’s progress. The Knowsley Road ground was vacated in August 2010, prior to its demolition, necessitating a temporary move to share Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street facilities, but Autumn 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club. After the disappointing midweek cup exit Town could have been given an easier assignment than a trip to Premier Division leaders New Mills. The hosts were smarting from a midweek draw with Stone Dominoes and Town were put to the sword in record breaking fashion as they slumped to their worst ever defeat. The early stages saw Town chasing shadows and it was no surprise when Daniel Douglas-Pringle got down the right wing far too easily and centred to Adam Mather who tapped home. The lead was doubled on 20 minutes when a long diagonal ball found substitute Chris Hirst unmarked centrally on the edge of the Town box and his effort cannoned home off the underside of the crossbar. The third goal came after 24 minutes Leon Grandison found himself 1-on-1 with Tom White and the Town stopper denied him twice but the loose ball broke to Carlos Meakin who found the bottom left hand corner of the net with the aid of the inside of the upright. Just after the half hour mark the hosts netted a fourth, a quick throw on the right saw Town caught flat footed with Pringle sending the ball in from the right and Meakin powering home for his second of the contest. Just before the interval the Millers made it five when Dan Jarrett was caught in possession by Leon Grandison and he advanced to round White and fire home. Town almost netted themselves before the break when James Gardner was found on the right by a cross field ball and his effort went just wide of the left hand post with the home stopper beaten. The second half saw much of the same as Town looked off the pace. Five minutes after the restart Leon Grandison got into the box and Jarrett appeared to win the ball but the referee had other ideas awarding a penalty and sending the defender off for his second caution, Meakin completed his hat-trick from the spot. Meakin added his fourth and the hosts seventh on 57 minutes when Hirst did well on the right and centred for the playmaker to fire home at the far post. With just over twenty minutes remaining New Mills added an eighth a left wing corner was sent into the box and met by Anthony Barras and his header was turned home on the far post by Hirst. Town almost scored a consolation goal on 81 minutes when James Croxton sent a free kick into the box from the right which was met by Lee Owens but his header went just over the crossbar. The rout was completed on 88 minutes when Kingsley Grandison was allowed to meander on an unopposed run to the edge of the shot where his powerful effort found the top right hand corner of the net. Vodkat League News Another Award For Alan Padiham Secretary Alan Smith has been recognised by Burnley Borough Council for his voluntary work at the club. The award, from Burnley Council's Mayor's Charity Fund, also brought the reward of a £400 cheque for Padiham FC, and Alan was presented both with the cheque and a certificate of recognition for his commitment to serving the community at a special presentation in Burnley Town Hall last week. It's the latest in a series of awards Alan has won in his time at the club, with his list of credits including being named 'Thwaites Lancaster Bomber Grassroots Sports Personality of the Year' in 2007, a national sports award for individuals who have made a major contribution to grass roots sport. The Mayor's Charity Fund was set up during 2009-10 by the former Mayor John Harbour, and his Mayoress Jillian Harbour, to support local organisations, and in particular the volunteers who make a real difference to the group or organisation they work with. Alan said: "I would like to thank the individuals at the club involved in putting my name forward for the award, and also thank the Mayor and Mayoress for setting up the fund during their term in office to recognise local volunteers and groups in the Borough. The £400 will come in very handy for the football club, and I'm sure all our members are very grateful for the donation."

Vodkat League Landmarks - week ending 12th March 2011 Wednesday 9th March 2011 Eccleshall's 1-0 win over Abbey Hey at Pershall Park was their 50th home league win.

Saturday 12th March 2011 Congleton Town's 3-0 win over Formby was the Bears' 250th League win. Likewise, Winsford United's 2-0 win at Squires Gate was also their 250th League win. Atherton LR established two records in their 3-1 win at Padiham. Their second goal, scored by Phil Howard, was their 1400th League goal. The third goal, scored by Carl Beamish, was LR's 700th away League goal. Chadderton reached the milestone of 1300 League points with their 1-0 win at Eccleshall.

Town Managers 1946 - Present Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. Ex-local boxer George ‘Bold’ Thomas, trainer on matchday bench. 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his sone in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Having previously been the manager of highly successful local league side ’Furnacemen’s Arms FC’ Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s Executive Programme Sponsors Season 2010-11

need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However, the club decided it could not wait for a repeat and an upsurge in results as the final few weeks of the 2008-09 season unfolded and Town remained rooted in a relegation spot. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games of the season. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10, eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. League News The League Management Committee have taken the decision to hold the outstanding ties in the League Challenge Cup and Division One Trophy over the first two weeks in May. With the FA issuing an instruction that league fixtures must be completed by Saturday April 30th, the Committee was left with little option regarding the scheduling of the fixtures, and the following draws were made and dates scheduled at the League Management Committee meeting on Wednesday evening. Vodkat League News . . . Glossop fans can take shelter again now that construction has been completed on a brand new 'scratting shed' on the road side of their Surrey Street ground. North End's directors say that this is just the start of an extensive refit for the 50 year old stadium. Over the years, the old stand had been damaged by the weather, particularly in high winds which had taken a section of the cover off a few years ago. The club launched a Development Fund which has provided the finance to take down the declining structure, and build a new one in its place. Directors Stewart Taylor (left) and Neil Rimmer are pictured in front of the new stand, and both hope that the completion of the first part of the their project can re-launch the Development Fund, and encourage new donors who can see that their donations are providing new infrastructure that was much needed. Stewart said: "The completion of the stand on the Surrey Street side of the ground is just part of the ambitious re-development plans at the ground. Following this will be the building of a new turnstile area and preparation work for this is ongoing. "The major project for the summer will be the conversion of the existing clubhouse into changing facilities for players and officials. A new club house will be built on the site of the existing changing rooms. There is still much work to be done on the ground to achieve the objectives of the Development Plan. The more we can raise in the fund, the more we can do to improve the facilities for local football fans. Neil too was ebullient about the future. We have received a very generous offer from a benefactor who will match £ for £ any contribution to the Development Fund up to a maximum of £5,000. So anyone who donates by buying a brick, or buying a share in the club, or simply donating, could well be donating double their amount. Donations from local businesses have already been received, and we are so grateful to Spire Construction and Travis Perkins who have donated materials towards the turnstiles' construction." Clubs are being invited to enter teams to compete in the Vodkat League's first ever Golf Day event. League Management Committee member Ian Williams is organising the event in partnership with www.golfday.co.uk, which will be held at Mottram Hall in Cheshire during May/June. The competition will require fourteen teams of four to take part, and the intention is that the teams will include players, members of the management team or committee members from clubs. The cost per team will be £160 which will include: • Registration and Coffee/Tea and breakfast buffet before the competition • 18 Holes on the Championship Course • Roaming Drinks Cart • BBQ on the Club House Terrace after the event • Score Card management There will be trophies for the Winners and Runners Up, and a number of other awards including a prize for the Longest Drive, and two prizes for Nearest the Pin. Sponsors are being sought for each hole at a cost of £20, with the sponsors name being displayed at each hole. The competition will be staged in mid week, and the date will be announced shortly to assist participants who need to book time off work. Vodkat League News Rochdale Town Link Up With Cancer Charity Rochdale Town have linked up with a local charity to help promote the dangers of skin cancer and raise funds towards research. The charity, known as Factor 50, was started in the autumn of 2007, with the aim of raising awareness of the dangers of over exposure to the sun, the use of sun beds and also to raise funds for research and clinical trials for Malignant Melanoma. Through a sponsorship deal, Rochdale Town are carrying the charity's logo on their playing kit, and working on a number of initiatives to help promote their work. One of the driving forces behind the charity is Gill Nuttall, who after seeing the problems faced by a friend who suffered from Malignant Melanoma, decided to try and help create some awareness of the disease. Gill also happens to be a friend of Mark Canning, the Rochdale Town Chairman, who explained how the link-up between the club and charity came about. "Since Gill set up the charity, she has come into contact with a number people involved in football who have suffered from forms of skin cancer. Gill decided that it would be a good idea to use a football club to help promote the charity and make people aware of what it was all about. As she is a friend of mine she offered to sponsor us, and we are delighted to have her support. Among the aims of the charity is to promote the dangers of skin cancer and how it can be avoided. You see a lot of young guys getting on sunbeds, and end up looking orange afterwards, and that is exactly the sort of thing that Gill wants to warn people about, and the damage it could cause. We were due to have a fund raising event for the charity before Christmas, but unfortunately Gill was unwell so we had to cancel it. So now we are looking at having a function that will also incorporate our end of season presentation night, so all the funds raised will be split 50/50 between the charity and the club. "It's fairly unusual to have a charity sponsor a football club, but in many ways skin cancer is an unusual condition, as the cancer can strike anywhere on your body. Gill always sets aside a sum of money each year to promote the charity, and she was happy to help us out by sponsoring the warm up tops and playing kit, which carry the charity logo. We are delighted to be working with her, and hopefully we can play our part in helping Gill to raise the profile of the charity and the problems caused by skin cancer." At that meeting it was decided that Snoods (Neck Scarves) that some players wear could constitute a danger to themselves if an opponent pulled them and were not part of the Basic Equipment as outlined under Law 4 - Players Equipment. Massive financial blow for Mariners Evo-Stik Premier League Marine have announced confirmation of the statement released today by Merseyside Police of the news that its premises in College Road, Crosby were broken into sometime on Monday of this week when intruders stole a sizable amount of cash. The discovery, when the Club was open, was made by Club Chairman Paul Leary on Monday evening. Only in the last couple of weeks Marine announced that a planning application had been made for future improvements at the Arriva Stadium and this was followed by the launch of an appeal to help fund the project. The amount of cash stolen has not been disclosed by the Club and there is significant building damage as a result of the break in. Leary said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am devastated and shocked by the discovery of this crime at the Arriva Stadium. Everyone at Marine works so hard to provide a community football club for the people of Crosby and surrounding areas and for this to happen is distressing. "It is a huge blow for what we are trying to do and the committee will have to review and consider what we need to do now. I cannot disclose the value of cash stolen but it is a sizable amount for Marine . "This is the second burglary in seven months that we have suffered and it is placing a severe strain on all of us. All Our Yesterdays . . . Another case of mistaken identity Programmes from St. Helens Town home games in the early 1960s are very rare and I therefore could not resist bidding on eBay for a programme from a game between St. Helens and the TV All Stars from 1963. Rather like last year, when Town were consulted about a St. Helens team photograph from 100 years ago, which turned out to be of a different team – St. Helen Auckland - when the programme duly arrived, it was not a St. Helens Town game but another case of mistaken identity. The programme itself was very interesting, nevertheless. A 16-page glossy publication, printed in black and green on white paper, it was for a game in aid of the Frank Blunstone Testimonial Fund. Frank was an England international, born at Crewe in 1934 and he signed originally for Crewe Alexandra in 1952, before transferring to Chelsea in February 1953. He went on to play over 300 games for the Stamford Bridge club under managers Ted Drake, Roy Bentley and Tommy Docherty. Five England caps came his way, as did a Championship medal in 1954/55. By way of coincidence, he was also selected for the Football League side to face the Irish League, alongside former Town legend Bert Trautmann. The game took place on Sunday, 1st December 1963 at the News of the World Sports Ground, Park Way, Mitcham. St. Helen’s FC played in green and white and the All Stars played in red and white. Among the TV All Stars squad were Mike and Bernie Winters, Jess Conrad, Tommy Steele, Dave King, Ronnie Hilton, Tommy Docherty and Dave Sexton. The referee was Frank Blunstone himself and linesmen were Chelsea players Ken Shellito and Bobby Tambling. Blunstone had been President of St. Helen’s FC since 1958. He was to retire from playing the following year, whereupon he joined the Chelsea management team and was later re-united with his old boss Tommy Docherty, having managed Brentford in between. On retirement, he returned to the Crewe area. Testimonials were a common feature of the game until quite recently. . . . Programme Review of pounds. Many players had the right to a testimonial enshrined in their contracts but, if they did so, they had to pay tax on the monies raised. If there was no contractual entitlement, but the player was granted his benefit as a discretionary measure, he could avoid payment of tax. A testimonial is quite a rare event these days, particularly since the emergence of football agents and the Bosman ruling. A club is lucky to retain a player for more than 3 or 4 seasons now. But what of St. Helen’s FC? The programme has a short piece, informing the reader that the team was formed by eight friends who got together in 1954 and by 1963, the amateur club had 80 members, two strong teams and had undertaken six European tours and a 15-day holiday in Italy. Among the vice presidents were Peter Waterman, Don Arroll and boxing correspondent of The People, Frankie Taylor, who also wrote a couple of pages in the programme. For those interested in watching St. Helen’s, there was a Chelsea telephone number to ring. I don’t know what became of St. Helen’s, but a quick check on the internet revealed another St. Helens club playing in Sussex. As for the TV All Stars, they are still playing charity matches these days, albeit as the Showbiz XI, and another internet search revealed that Jess Conrad is their team manager and apparently still turns out from time to time.

Around The Grounds Milbank Linnets Stadium - Runcorn Linnets Another new ground on the circuit was taken in as Town paid their first visit to Runcorn Linnets new Milbank Linnets Stadium. The Linnets are bearing the fruits of their labours as they have returned to Runcorn after several seasons playing at Witton Albion’s Wincham Park. The ground is situated in Murdishaw adjacent to the Halton Arms pub. The building which houses the tea bar, dressing rooms secretary’s office and hospitality room used to be a gym and there is evidence of this in the mirror that runs the full length of one of the walls in this compound. This area has been adorned with reminders of the previous Runcorn’s past including a team shot that includes comedian John Bishop. It is a short walk outside on a passageway that runs parallel with the players tunnel to reach the ground itself. At the end of the passageway you are directly behind the goal at the nearside of the ground with the pitch running away from you towards the far end of the ground. Advancing around towards the left sees hard standing around the ground but no covering on the left hand touchline or behind the far end goal. The opposite touchline sees the first of two covered stands this one contains the full complement of seats in the ground. Advancing back towards the players tunnel the second stand which is located to the right of the goal and is a covered standing area. The ground is an excellent facility and the only gripes I would have would have would have been the pitch which resembled the beech (plans are a foot to deal with this in the off season) and the toilets facilities which were situated in a portakabin which had a previous life as cloak room.

Saint’s Alive . . . A grandfather and grandson are playing golf together. They reach a par 4 that is severely doglegged round a clump of very tall trees. “When I was your age,” says the grandfather, “I’d aim right over those trees and hit the green every time.” Confident that his ability and the assistance of modern equipment will increase his chances in comparison to his grandfather’s time, the grandson decides to give it a go. He hits a perfect drive but sees his ball clatter into the uppermost branches of the trees and fall to ground in their midst. “Mind you,” adds the grandfather, “when I was your age, those trees were just saplings.” Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Heaven, God went missing for six days. Eventually, Archangel Michael found him on the seventh day, resting. “Where have you been, God?” he asked. God pointed to a ball of blue, white, brown and green spinning below them. “Look what I’ve been making, Michael,” replied God. “What is it?” enquired Michael, with a puzzled expression. “It’s a planet, and I’ve put life on it,” explained God, proudly. “I’m going to call it Earth, and it’s going to be a place of great balance.” “Balance?” queried Michael, still confused. God started pointing down to different parts of the Earth. “Let me show you,” He said. “In only a few thousand years, North America there will become a land of great opportunity and wealth, while South America is going to be poor. The Middle East will be a political hot spot, while Russia will be involved in a cold war. Here, I’ve placed a continent of white people, but there is a continent of black people.” This one will be extremely hot, while the one over there will be cold and covered in ice.” Michael, impressed by God’s work, suddenly noticed an area of land on a small island. “Where’s that?” he asked. “Ah!” said God. “That’s the North of England, the most glorious place on Earth. Eventually, it will be inhabited by truly wonderful people living in magnificent cities, and will become home to half of all the Premiership football teams. It will produce some of the planet’s finest artists, musicians, writers, thinkers, explorers and politicians. The people from the North of England are going to be modest, intelligent and humorous, and they are going to be found travelling the world.
