Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this the first fixture of the 2011-12 season against last season’s runners-up Ramsbottom United I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. It doesn't seem like that long ago since we were gathered here for the final home games of the season in that last hectic week of April when we played four matches in eight days. Since when we have reappointed Jimmy McBride to the Town hot seat and he has brought in Andy Clough as his assistant with John Fletcher agreeing to stay on in a coaching capacity and another familiar face in Keith Plumpton returning to the Town staff. Iain Dyson has stayed with the club returning back to a playing capacity as he attempts to reach the landmark of 100 goals for the club this season and if his goalscoring in pre-season is any indication he should reach the target this term. When the Fixture Secretary mapped out the fixtures for the opening day of the season he could not have given the new management here at Town a more difficult opener as we host last season’s runners up Ramsbottom United. The Rams taught Town a lesson here at Edge Green Street running out 5-1 winners in the middle of March before Town should have returned the favour at the Riverside in April having been 3-1 before succumbing as the hosts netted twice to secure a 3-3 draw. Rammy have retained the vast majority of their squad from last season and have also recruited on top of this and must surely be in the handful of real contenders to be there or thereabouts come the end of April.

THE MILLHOUSE

There will be plenty of new names and faces in the Town squad this afternoon and there have been some impressive performers in the pre-season campaign but these count for nothing as the real action begins in earnest this afternoon. So we start again everyone is on a level playing field for the only time in the season and there will be plenty of teams thinking this could be our year with quite a few of these hopes being dashed by 5pm this afternoon. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to a positive result. Enjoy the game and the 2011-12 season. . . In Town Today . . . In 1966, Ramsbottom United Football Club was founded by the club’s present chairman Harry Williams who has without doubt been the driving force that has taken the Rams from the public park pitch and the Bury Amateur League to today’s Riverside Ground and the North West Counties Football League. In fact, his influence upon the club has seen the ground renamed in August 2010 to “The Harry Williams Riverside Stadium.” The club moved leagues in 1967 and ended up playing the next eighteen years in the Bolton Combination before the move in 1987 to the Manchester League. At the end of the 1994-95 season, the club applied to the North West Counties Football League and following substantial ground improvements, were admitted into the `pyramid` in June 1995. The Rams first season in the North West Counties Football League couldn’t have been much better. Although finishing in 12th position, they managed to bring in their first silverware at semi-professional football by lifting the Second Division Trophy after a fine 2-1 victory of Cheadle Town Football Club at Darwen FC’s Anchor Ground. During the 1996-97 season the club made great strides in achieving their goal of becoming one of the valley’s top side. After one of the most dramatic endings to a season, they lifted the Second Division Championship by pipping local rivals Haslingden Football Club on goal difference on the last day of the season. Throughout the season, they broke all previous club records with winning victories of 9-0 (Stantondale), 8-1 (Oldham Town) and they also went on an amazing league run of winning all of their first 17 home fixtures. The club also started the mammoth task of erecting floodlights at their Riverside Ground. The lights had to be in place way before the start of the new season, as without them no admittance would be given and promotion would not have been possible. For the very first time in their history, the club entered the FA Vase but were defeated in the preliminary round by Tetley Walker. A slight disappointment but nevertheless it was another step forward for the club. The 1997-98 season saw the club play football at a much higher standard, and with it came some difficulties. The first couple of months saw the team struggle on the field, but as time went by, they produced some excellent football which saw them climb the first division. Most notable of performances was against local rivals Darwen FC, Rossendale United FC and Clitheroe FC, all of whom could not defeat the Rams at home or away in any competition played - a feat worthy of praise. The season ended with the club finishing in 17th position in division one, but once again they managed to bring in more silverware, albeit with the Reserve side who managed to beat Maine Road FC Reserves in the Final of the Reserve Division Trophy. In 1998-99 the club once again stepped forwards by entering the FA Cup for the very first time. A fine run in the world’s oldest cup competition saw the Rams make it to the Third Qualifying Round, only to lose to Conference side Southport FC, 829 visitors turned out in atrocious conditions, easily breaking the previous record of 464. The 19992000 season turned out to be one of the best seen since the club's championship winning season of 1996-97. After a slow start, the Rams managed to finish the season in third position, on 79 points - easily their best in the clubs history until 2010. Russell Brierley became the clubs top scorer in any one season with 39 league and cup goals. However, more was to come during the 2000-01 season...! After a poor start to the 2000/1 season, two wins and three defeats, the Rams slipped into mid-table obscurity but in the ranks hopes were still high. By mid-November the team had slowly started to catch up on the top clubs but with the atrocious weather conditions, games were now starting to be postponed and at one stage the Rams only played one game in four weeks. As always with Ramsbottom United, they managed to grind out some excellent results with the most notable one being the 3-0 win over local rivals Rossendale United on Boxing Day. As Easter arrived the team were only 9 points adrift of the top team, Rossendale. Despite winning at Rossendale, Ramsbottom could not match Rossendale in the run in. Whilst enjoying many successes in such a short space of time, the Rams also went through much turmoil after the sad loss of manager Ken Bridge in 2001 – a desperate loss for the club and Ken is NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

. . . Ramsbottom United remembered now with the main gates named in his honour. Mike Kelly took over the reigns in May 2001 but he only took the club to 15th position. A disappointing return and he resigned the following season and in stepped Andy Grimshaw. Results were still not great but the club found themselves once more moving up the league and playing some attractive football in the process. It came as a huge blow to the club and supporters when Grimshaw resigned in November 2003. Vince Overson took over and a lot of expectations were placed on him from the outset and as the 2003-04 season came to an end, the results failed to materialize and they finished the season in 17th position and everything seemed to be going against the Rams and Overson resigned in May 2004. Derek Egan who took over in the hotseat. Egan brought an entire new squad to the Riverside during the 2004-05 season and they played some of the best football scene in years as they marched up the table, the Rams finished the season in 5th position. More gloom was to descend on the Riverside as Egan resigned after failing to reach an agreement over team finances. In May 2005, the club appointed Lee Sculpher as their fifth manager in four years he had guided Clitheroe FC to the NWCFL league division one championship in 2003-04. and although the 2005-06 season did not live up to expectations but the Bolton Hospitals Cup was secured and the team finished in their lowest ever position in division one (18th). The next season saw the club finished in a credible 8th position. They also won the Bolton Hospitals Cup for the second successive season defeating Tempest United 5-1 in the Final, again played at the Reebok Stadium. The 2007-08 season started very well but after six defeats Sculpher was under pressure and he resigned after a win over St Helens Town. Neil Hart was appointed as first team manager and assistant manager, however, despite winning the Hospital's Cup for the third consecutive season results once again proved to be unconvincing and Neil resigned from the club at the end of the 2007 season. During May the club interviewed many prospective managers and it was Andy Feeley who was overwhelmingly voted in as the new manager. He has had to start from scratch as many of the players who played under Hart have decided to join their former manager at Turton but the club were still optimistic that a serious challenge for silverware during the 2008-09 season could finally materialise after such a barren period of success. However, Feeley left the club in January 2009 and Paul Williams, his assistant, was handed the job in a caretaker role. A disappointing run of results towards the end of the 2008-2009 saw Williams not offered the full time job and he was released. Two weeks later, however, two former players – Anthony Johnson, returning to the club after a spell at Clitheroe and Bernard Morley, who had already rejoined the Rams in January 2009 from the same Unibond outfit, were given the full-time position in a player-manager capacity with John Hunter assisting them as coach. After a disappointing 5-0 defeat in the opening day of the season to the eventual run-away champions Newcastle Town, the Rams finished an outstanding fourth in the table and climbed to second at Christmas – not bad considering we were bottom after the first round of games!!! The side completed a ten-year best points total of 81 and a clubrecord of 14 away victories (only Newcastle performed better in 2009/10). 2010/2011 season will go down in history as one of the finest in recent memory. The clinching of the Runners-Up Trophy in the North West Counties League by a clear nine points was one of the many achievements of the campaign. Scoring over 100 goals, winning more league games than at any time in their history was just the tip of the iceberg and two lots of Manager of the Month awards plus player of the month awards for Phil Dean and Jon Robinson certainly proved that the club had come a long way in a short space of time. A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Edge Green Street for our opening fixture of the 2011-12 NWCFL Premier Division season. We welcome our friends and rivals Ramsbottom United and hope they enjoy their short stay with us. Plenty of pundits are tipping ‘Rammy’ to go one better than last year runner’s up spot and there’s no doubt we couldn’t have been given a tougher opening fixture - but as they say we’ve got to play them sometime and opening day fixtures often throw up a few surprise results!! Once again we must thank our colleagues here at Ashton Town for their continued support in playing host to us as we await our return to the new St Helens Stadium next spring. The summer break (where’s the time gone!) has been busy on all fronts with the new management team of Jimmy McBride and Andy Clough working hard with the players. There’ll be plenty of new faces on show as well as a few familiar ones and we will attempt to bring supporters regular player profiles via the match programme. Our pre-season was hampered a little with two postponements at Ashton Athletic and Garswood United but the lads had some excellent ‘run-outs’ against South Sefton Borough (twice) a 2-1 loss in the opening game was followed by a 3-0 win; a visit to Trafford saw the lads battle well and play some good football before going down 2-1 while the final week saw three wellearned victories against Beeches FC (2-4), Greenalls Padgate St Oswalds (0-3) and Prestwich Heys (0-2). Off the field we are delighted to announce that our main sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool have renewed their support for the forthcoming season and as you will see throughout the programme we’ve quite a few new sponsors and advertisers - we’re still on the look out for individual player sponsors which only cost £50 per season and is a great way to support the club and of course there’s plenty of other deals on offer. Thanks must go to Northwest Vans who have supplied the team with a warm-up/training kit and to our new away kit sponsor John and Andy from Auto Perfection who are based in Burtonwood. Still with fundraising, the club is continuing with the 100+ Club and we’re always on the look-out for new members or existing members willing to sell to friends, family and work colleagues. The monthly draw costs £5 per number and if we maintain our 100 member target the prize-pot will be £250 (1st - £150, 2nd - £75 and 3rd - £25). The club will potentially earn £2500 over the season! The draws will be made following the final Saturday fixture of each month - please see Andy Langley at today’s game for more details. The club has resurrected the Reserves this season and they will be playing in the St Helens Combination Premier Division and will be administered via Steve Leather and the club’s Junior Section. We will keep fans up-to-date with fixtures and results as the season progresses. As with the start of every season optimism is the order of the day and I am sure Jimmy McBride and lads will be hoping to compete across all competitions! We will be looking back 25 years as the club embarked on the historic season 1986-87 which culminated in Town’s greatest achievement, FA Vase glory at Wembley and who knows maybe even another Vase or Cup run beckons. Enjoy the game, give the lads your encouragement and please join us in the clubhouse for the usual post-match debate and the presentation of the St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ award. See you Tuesday at Atherton LR or we’re next at home on Tuesday 16th August when AFC Liverpool will be the visitors. Prospects for the new season . . . Pre-season is over once more and it’s time to return to the serious business of North West Counties League competition. As far as opening day’s fixtures are concerned, they don’t come any tougher than last season’s runners-up, Ramsbottom United. Still, at least we’re at home – the first time Town have been at home on the first day of the season since that momentous encounter with FC United of Manchester in 2006 – and with many new faces, who knows what can be achieved? Jimmy McBride’s return to the club he left in February 2002, has been marked by a huge influx of new faces and if pre-season performances are anything to go by, prospects look good. The last two months of last season are best forgotten, but they included a very encouraging 3-3 draw at Ramsbottom on Easter Saturday, a game which might even have produced a victory. Town’s last win over United was as long ago as 2nd May 2006 and since then there have been 3 draws and 7 defeats. Opening day fixtures are often notorious for producing unusual results, so Town will be hoping to get off to a good start this afternoon. Ramsbottom will undoubtedly be among the favourites for promotion to the Evo-stik League, but what of their likely rivals? The four teams which finished just behind them last season all won promotion from the lower division of the then Vodkat League in the previous three seasons, Winsford, Padiham, Bootle and Barnoldswick, and these clubs will be looking to push on once more. Last season’s First Division Champions, AFC Blackpool dumped St. Helens Town out of the League Cup last March and they will be a threat to the top sides this season, as will Runcorn Town, who were the League’s last survivors in the FA Vase and who have recruited strongly this season including former Town players John Elias, Phil and Graham Mitchell who have all joined in the close season. Their local rivalry with the Linnets should be an interesting tussle and the crowds at the two Runcorn derbies will be very interesting. AFC Liverpool, promoted to make up the numbers after Rossendale’s demise and Holker Old Boys’ decision not to accept promotion, could be dark horses. Whilst they have not exactly set the First Division on fire in the last three seasons, elevation to Step 5 will be a massive boost as they seek to emulate FC United’s success and their early season visit here on 16th August will be eagerly awaited. Their first game was against Town at Edge Green Street three years ago, producing a crowd of over 700. A similar attendance this time round would be manna from heaven. Congleton and Atherton LR both appear to be in the midst of rebuilding their squads and may be destined for midtable this time round, but Colne, Glossop, Maine Road and Squires Gate will all expect to improve on last season’s achievements. We were all sorry to hear of Alsager’s difficulties following the fire which destroyed their premises and they will do well to retain their status in the Premier Division, especially having to play most of their first half season’s fixtures away from home. Flixton did well last season, in no small part due to the heavy scoring of Astley Mulholland and it remains to be seen if they can do nearly as well without him. Silsden and Stone Dominoes are formidable opposition on their own grounds, but face long journeys on the road to mount a serious challenge at the top end of the table and Ashton Athletic, reprieved from relegation for a second successive season, look to be facing an uphill struggle to retain their status after an encouraging start following promotion in 2008. Teams in the Premier Division, as well as all the others at Step 5 in the national league ladder will be nervously looking over their shoulders as the season progresses, following the announcement from the FA that possibly 4 leagues will be downgraded to Step 6 over the next few years. Whilst early indications indicate this may well affect Kent and Sussex, no region can afford to be complacent but let’s hope that the North West Counties League will not be adversely affected. A word from the Dugout . . . Hello and welcome to Edge Green Street for the opening game of the Northwest Counties Football League 2011 – 2012 season. May I take this opportunity to welcome and congratulate our opponents today Ramsbottom United FC on finishing in the runners up spot last season. That alone will make them one of, or even most peoples’ favourites to claim the title this time round. We will be in for a really tough game today against one of the better footballing teams in the division, something that we are looking forward to because it will give us an idea of where we are in relation to the squad we are trying to assemble. The life of a non-league football club is forever changing, especially over the summer months and here at St Helens Town there have been a number of changes over the close season. New management team, lots of new players to compliment the lads from last season and hopefully an upturn in fortunes. It’s 10 years since I last took charge of St Helens Town, but to be honest it’s like I’ve never been away, we have a great set of lads here who really get on well with one another and to be honest it’s been a pleasure to be around them this preseason. They have worked hard and never once moaned and really made training a pleasure. John Fletcher, Andy Clough and Keith Plumpton have all put sessions on for the lads and have all commented how well received they have been. Back to today’s game and more importantly today’s opponents. If we are to get anything out of today’s game we must have the right work ethic because Rammy will pass the ball around for fun, and if we stand off and let them play we will be in big trouble. We need to give them the respect they deserve for their efforts last season, finishing second is a great achievement in itself but I am sure they will be looking to go one better this season. We have a lot of lads who are playing at this level for the first time and hopefully the chance to prove themselves will be all the motivation they need; couple that with the experience of the more senior players and I am convinced we can hold our own with any team in the league. So let’s all get behind the lads and hopefully get the result we desire. And finally let’s hope all the players, officials and supporters of both teams enjoy the game and the hospitality on offer this afternoon and we see one or two of you again on Tuesday night at Atherton LR. Enjoy the Game
