Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Runcorn Town. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. We got back to action at Brocstedes Park on Saturday after a fortnight break for one reason or another when we welcomed Merseyside rivals AFC Liverpool. Town were defending a 100% home record against the visitors but they have been having their best season of their short history this term. Town came into the game looking to break their losing streak which was running at three matches. After heavy rain late on Friday and overnight the surface which had passed an early morning pitch inspection was not perfect but credit must go to the ground staff for getting the pitch ready for the contest. The surface was not idea for passing football and there were certainly a few bobbles in the contest but all in all the pitch held up really well all things considered. Town were quickly out of the blocks early doors and felt aggrieved to be denied a penalty in an incident which would have seen the visitors reduced to 10 men with less than 60 seconds on the clock. Tom Lightbody had broken away from the Liverpool backline and was hauled back by a defender but there was no flag and the visitors were reprieved. Nevertheless the hosts pressed on and could have taken the lead a few minutes later when Lightbody headed a left wing corner from Mason Ryan over the bar. Just before the half hour mark Town did break the deadlock a right wing cross from Danny Owens broke to Lightbody whose effort struck the right upright with the rebound being fired home by Nathan Parish for his fifth goal of the season. The lead was to be short lived as one of AFC’s first forays forward resulted in an equaliser. A misplaced pass in midfield saw the ball gifted to the visitors in a dangerous area and Liverpool did not look a gift horse in the mouth with Steven Jones linking with Ryan Cox who mishit his shot but it still found the back of the net. Before the interval Andy Olsen fired an effort from 25 yards which beat the keeper but rebounded back off the crossbar and was cleared and despite plenty of possession for both sides in the second half their was a somewhat end of season feel to the encounter and not much to trouble either shot-stopper and the points were shared. This evening we take on Runcorn Town who we crossed swords with just over a fortnight ago at The Pavilions with the home side running out 2-0 winners on that Monday evening. We will be looking to gain revenge and record a first victory over the Runcorn outfit in only our sixth meeting. Let’s get behind Town this evening and cheer them onto victory. Enjoy the game . . . In Town Today . . . Runcorn Town were formed in 1967 under the name of Mond Rangers FC. They played for the first few years in the Runcorn Sunday league, and in 1973 they made the decision to try Saturday football in the impressive Warrington and District League (WDL). In their first season they finished as runners up, and after amalgamating with ICI Weston for the 1974/75 season, they became one of the strongest sides in the league. They remained in the WDL until 1984 when they were elected to join the West Cheshire League (WCL) Division Two. Mond established themselves as a good, solid mid-table team until the 1991/92 season when they won their first silverware in the West Cheshire Bowl as well as a respectable sixth place finish. The following season they finished third in the league and reached the Bowl final, with another third place finish the following season in which they scored 100 goals and regaining the Bowl. Promotion finally came in 1994/95 when they finished second in the league scoring 118 goals. They also reached the Final of the Cheshire Amateur Cup but lost to Poulton Victoria in a match played at Prenton Park, Tranmere. Despite sharing the Bill Weight Memorial Trophy in that first season, Division One proved a struggle and they were relegated for the first time in the clubs history in 2001/02. Success returned in 2004/05 with the team finishing as runners up in Division Two, winning the Runcorn Senior Cup and reaching the final of the Bowl. Ahead of the 2005/06 season, the club changed their name to Runcorn Town in order to try and bring a more professional look to the club in general, and hopefully increase support from both businesses and individuals in the local community. A decision was also made to try and improve facilities at the club with a view to joining the North West Counties League. The season got off to a good start with the Bill Weight Memorial Cup won early on and the Runcorn Cup added, but on the final day of the season, they slipped into the relegation places for the first time to suffer a heart-breaking relegation. Town quickly regrouped and bounced back the next season by winning Division Two for the first time. The following three seasons saw top four finishes, although the main progression was off the field as the ground was transformed. Hard standing, seating and floodlights were installed for the first time, with the dressing rooms also upgraded. This enabled the club to be elected to the North West Counties League at the start of the 2010/11 season, with the club also entering the FA Vase and the Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history.

. . . Runcorn Town It is fair to say that the first season in the league exceeded all expectations, with the team losing just two league matches as they secured promotion to the Premier Division as runners -up, with James McShane finishing as the league's overall leading scorer with 43 goals. The Quarter Final of the Division One Trophy was also reached as well as the Semi Final of the Challenge Cup, whilst Warrington were held in the Cheshire Senior Cup before losing on penalties. In the clubs' FA Vase debut season, the club also wrote headlines as they progressed through four successive away ties before bowing out in the in the Last 32 stage against Dunston UTS, the last remaining North West Counties League side in the competition. The first season in the Premier Division saw Town continue in the same vein that they left Division One, with the team losing out on the title on the last day of the season to Ramsbottom United. James McShane once again topped the scoring charts with Town scoring over 120 goals in all competitions. The club were also once again the last remaining NWCL side in the FA Vase, this time reaching a replay in the Last 32 before bowing out. We also made our debut in the FA Cup, winning two games before bowing out in the 1st Qualifying Round to Evo-Stik League side Ashton United. Last season was another good season for the club, finishing in fourth place in the Premier Division just four points off top spot. Progress was made in the FA Vase with the Last 16 reached for the first time, with the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Cup made once more. Another good scalp came in the Cheshire Senior Cup with a 5-0 away win at Warrington which earned the "Team of the Round" award. Season

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Runcorn Town. I’d like to thank tonight’s match sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who continue their superb support for the club this season. We also welcome Dent Wizard who are this evening’s match ball sponsors - many thanks for your support. Last time out we earned a creditable draw when AFC Liverpool were the visitors to Brocstedes Park. Nathan Parish gave Town a first half lead but it didn't last long as our visitors levelled before the break. A heavy pitch didn’t help either side but Town hit the wood work twice in a game of very few chances. Today’s visitors will be looking for a strong finish to the season and the two teams met a couple of weeks ago at the Pavillions when Runcorn ran out 2-0 winners in a tight game in which we played well and were unfortunate not to take something from the encounter. Town will be on the road for the next week or so - Saturday sees us travel to Alsager Town and this game is followed by trips to AFC Blackpool next Tuesday and a trip to Bacup & Rossendale Borough on Saturday 12th April. Earlier this week the Reserves kept themselves in the West Cheshire League Division 3 promotion race with one of their best performances of the season - a 3-0 home win over Ford Motors. Goals from Johnson (2) and Sanderson saw the lads leapfrog their opponents into third place with five games remaining. Alan Gillespie’s charges are at home on Saturday to Upton AA Reserves (Windleshaw Road). Don’t forget we are still looking for new members of our weekly Goldline Lottery draw which costs just £1 per entry each week with a chance to win £500 each weekday! See any committee member for further details or an application form. Our Gala Dinner and Presentation Evening will take place on Saturday 3rd May at the St Helens Masonic Hall with guest speaker David Fairclough and comedian Frankie Allen. Tickets are £30 but a table of 10 is discounted to £250. Please give this event your support Enjoy the game. John McKiernan Chairman, St Helens Town AFC

NWCFL News . . . As the season enters its final month, everyone at West Didsbury & Chorlton can look back with satisfaction on what the club has achieved in the past 12 months. After winning promotion from Division One in their debut season, the team has more than held its own in the Premier Division, and work has now been completed over the course of the season to ensure that ground meets the necessary grading requirements. The installation of a new stand and a new covered standing area took place a couple of weeks ago, and there is now hard standing on all four sides of the ground. Secretary Rob Turley said: "We were awarded a 50% grant from the Football Foundation but still needed to raise over ÂŁ10,000 ourselves as matched funding. We have launched a 'Sponsor a Seat' scheme for next season for ÂŁ100, and anyone sponsoring a seat will get a season ticket to all out NWCFL games, with FA Cup and FA Vase games included, and have their sponsorship recognised in the stand. "There are now less than 30 seats remaining to be sponsored, and are encouraging anyone who is able to help to sign up. The new stand was in use for the first time at the Runcorn Linnets game on 18th March, and it was nice to see the clubhouse and new stand in use as everyone huddled together for cover, during a very wet second half to support the team against Abbey Hey four days later". Meanwhile, on the field, Saturday's home draw against Ashton Athletic moved West into 10th place in the Premier Division, and with six games left a good run of form could move them a place or two higher. It's a performance that few would have predicted at the start of the season, but manager Andy Nelson insists it is no fluke. "We've proved there are ways of doing what we have done without a budget, but the whole club has to buy into the ethos, and everyone has done", said Andy. We tick the boxes we can tick. We have a tremendous changing room, a really good work ethic, we know our system and our shape, we work on it and the players buy into it. On top of that, we pick players that want to be here and want to have a bit of pride in the jersey. "We still have nine players here who were here when I came, and have made the step from the Manchester League First Division to the NWCFL Premier Division. You wouldn't believe they would be good enough, but we have educated them. They have done their bit in getting fit enough to cope with it, not just being able to run, but building themselves up. They bought into that, and you can see how it's paid dividends. "We also found some young lads, who are delighted to have their first chances of playing at this level, and I've also been fortunate in that I have some experienced players too. So we have worked with a big squad, around 24 players, and therefore I can give time out to the experienced players who know they won't be called on all the time. I have to be absolutely delighted with how the season has gone. If we could end up with a top ten finish that would be terrific. "This is a good league with some experienced teams and players, and there are clubs with a lot more in terms of facilities and resources than we have got, and for us to come in at the first attempt and be looking at a finish in mid-table, maybe even grabbing a top ten place, is great".

Town’s trip to the Pavillions Runcorn Town 2-0 St Helens Town North West Counties Football League Premier Division Monday 17th March 2014 Town in honourable reverse at Runcorn Runcorn Town 2 St. Helens Town 0 was the result last Monday evening at The Pavilions, but the score did scant justice to a strong display by St. Helens, as for most of the game there was very little between the teams and a repeat of last season’s 1-1 draw would have been a more representative scoreline. St. Helens had the majority of the chances in the first half and were unfortunate not to go ahead as early as the seventh minute when leading scorer Andy Gillepie burst through the home defence and rounded ‘keeper Stuart Plant, only to lose control at the crucial moment and the ball ran out of play. Three minutes later at the other end, Paul Shanley looked certain to score in a one-on-one on Ciaran Gibson, but the young Town goalie saved with his feet. Midway through the first half, Ed Richardson made a break down the left wing and crossed to Gillespie, but the St. Helens striker could only head narrowly wide and, with the visitors on top after 30 minutes, Michael Sykes-Wright was only just off target with a powerful drive. It was very much against the run of play that Runcorn Town went ahead four minutes later, when a route one high ball from captain Danny Dalton found the prolific James McShane and his pin-point header beat Gibson at his right-hand post. Neither side produced a chance of note during the remainder of the opening half and the interval arrived with the home side 1-0 ahead. Early in the second half, Gillespie could have levelled the scores, but his drive was well saved by Plant, then Danny Owens hit a 30-yard shot which only just cleared the Runcorn bar. Shortly afterwards, Shanley again brought the best out of Gibson in the St. Helens goal and for the rest of the game, defences were very much on top as St. Helens tried in vain to get a shot on target, their best effort coming with 10 minutes remaining when Lee Crompton just failed to connect with a low cross from the right when an equaliser looked a distinct possibility. Runcorn Town secured the points four minutes from time when the St. Helens defence finally cracked, substitute Luke Edwards’ shot deflecting unluckily off Andy Mawdsley past the hapless Gibson, the move coming from a disputed corner kick. This latest defeat saw St. Helens Town drop to fifteenth in the NW Counties Premier Division table, but they remain comfortably clear of the relegation zone with valuable games in hand of most of their rivals ahead of Tuesday’s home game against AFC Blackpool, with AFC Liverpool due to visit Brocstedes Park on Saturday, 29th March. There have been distinct signs of a return to form in the last few games and with a couple of wins under their belts, an end-of-season flourish could yet see Town finish in the top half of the table. A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league.

Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place publicaccess AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. St Helens Town Commercial Manager, Darryl Picton, said: “The idea to forge this partnership came from Fabrice’s story. “Never before have I witnessed such an event that has brought football fans, clubs and

. . . Our Charity Partner players together in support of one man as what happened on that horrific day at White Hart Lane. The story touched the hearts of everyone and transcended sport. Those events really hit home to everyone at St Helens Town how quickly and unexpectedly tragedy can strike in a community and having access to this essential equipment will save hundreds of lives. “We are proud to be associated with Hearts and Goals and with Fabrice, and we will work tirelessly throughout the year to raise every penny possible for the campaign.” Trudie Lobban MBE, Founder and CEO of Arrhythmia Alliance, said: “We are absolutely delighted St Helens Town AFC have chosen our Hearts & Goals campaign as their official charity campaign. “Hearts & Goals focuses on tackling the UK’s biggest killer, sudden cardiac arrest, which kills 100,000 people in the UK every year. We have already been able to help communities up and down the country place lifesaving AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and with partners like St Helens we can continue this work. “It is clear all involved at the club are very passionate about the campaign and we are delighted to welcome them on board.” A host of fundraising events are already planned throughout the year, including a a Race Night on Saturday 26th October and Comedy & Curry Night on Saturday 7th December. For full details of events or to make a donation to the campaign contact Darryl Picton on 07908 833 554 or by email at sthelenstownafc@gmail.com Visit www.heartsandgoals.org for more information.

St Helens Town AFC . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought Combination Championship Trophy pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured from Wesley Bridge in 1972 below) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

. . . Managers 1946-Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 200607 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - 2013 Ian Granite (pictured left) became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 201213 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

Town v AFC Liverpool . . . St Helens Town 1-1 AFC Liverpool Saturday 29th March 2014 Lightbody has a day to remember St. Helens Town secured a valuable point in a 1-1 draw with AFC Liverpool on Saturday but on any other day, it would have been a win. Starting without leading scorer Andy Gillespie, manager Ian Price pushed Tom Lightbody up front and he had a day to remember, for a variety of reasons. He played a large part in creating Town’s goal, went close himself on several occasions and was hauled down twice in the box when he should have been given penalties. In the opening couple of minutes, Lightbody was clean through on ‘keeper Stephen Longrigg, only for an AFC defender to save the day with what looked more like a Cumberland wrestling throw than a legitimate body check, but the referee inexplicably denied the penalty appeal. Eight minutes into the match, it was Lightbody again who went close with a headed effort. With 27 minutes on the clock, Town produced the move of the match. Danny Owens beat two defenders down the right wing and produced a great cross, which Lightbody crashed against the post and, following up, Nathan Parish netted with the rebound. Another eight minutes on and against the run of play, AFC Liverpool drew level when the Town defence failed to clear their own box and Ryan Cox tapped in at his near post. St. Helens should have regained the lead in the run-in to half-time. Out of nowhere, striker Andy Olsen let fly from 25 yards out and, with the ‘keeper clutching at thin air, the ball hit the bar and, agonisingly, there was nobody on hand to put away the rebound. Five minutes into the second half, it was that man Lightbody again. A through ball found him bearing down on Longrigg when Jay Wynne produced a magnificent, last-ditch tackle to deny the Town striker. Lightbody was really in the thick of it and a burst down the right wing saw him scythed down mercilessly by an AFC defender. From the free-kick, the ball found Mason Ryan at the corner of the box and his well-judged shot came back off the woodwork and, once again, there was nobody to connect with the ricochet and the chance went begging. With the sole exception of a chance from the visitors which Andy Mawdsley headed off his goal-line, it was basically all one-way traffic for the remaining 25 minutes, AFC apparently glad to settle for a point and Town just falling short of the mark but Lightbody again was denied in the last minute when, with only the goalkeeper to beat, he was shoved off the ball from behind and another penalty shout was denied by the referee, who was some distance behind play. On another day, with a referee better positioned, Town would have won this match. A home game with Runcorn Town on Thursday evening is next up, followed by trips to Alsager (Saturday, 3pm), AFC Blackpool next Tuesday at 7.45pm and, weather permitting, Bacup on the following Saturday. Then there are four home games on the run either side of Easter before the season’s finale at Maine Road on 26th April. St. Helens have made good progress this season and, with no relegation worries to contend with, they can look up the table, with the aim to finish in the top half. Glyn Jones
