Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Silsden. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. Last Saturday saw us extend the unbeaten run to seven matches as we recorded a 3-0 win over West Didsbury & Chorlton in the first ever competitive meeting between the two sides. After the early stages were fought out mainly in the middle of the park Town broke the deadlock on 41 minutes when Andy Gillespie continued his scoring form as he linked with Adam Storey before firing past the helpless visiting stopper to send Town into the break with a narrow lead. After the break the visitors responded with a 15 minute spell of pressure but failed to level matters and in similar fashion to the previous match against Squires Gate, Town reply to the period of pressure was to extend their lead. A long kick from Ciaran Gibson was allowed to bounce by the visiting defence and Gillespie was able to capitalise as he latched onto the through ball and lobed an effort over the advancing stopper and into the net. Gillespie then completed his hat-trick late on in the piece as Storey was again provider centring for Gillespie to send a stooping header home to make it five goals in his four appearances for the first team this season. The win saw Town up to the heady heights of 7th position before the midweek fixtures. This is no mean feat and Ian, the coaching staff and the squad can take plenty of pride as we punch above our weight. It took us until March last season to break the 20 point barrier which we have done in October this season! As we continue this long run of home matches we take on Silsden who had an excellent 3-2 victory at home to Alsager Town last Saturday and as Andy Gillespie was notching his treble for Town, Michael Hall was doing likewise for Silsden to help them secure three points. There have been some good games between Town and Silsden over recent seasons and plenty of goals lets hope that this afternoon’s contest is entertaining for all present with Town coming out victorious of course! Off the field we have a forthcoming fundraiser with our Race Night scheduled for Saturday evening with more information, tickets etc available from Darryl Picton or John McKiernan this afternoon. Finally, let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto a victory. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Silsden AFC was formed in September 1904 and has seen many teams come and go playing Saturdays and Sundays. The present Saturday senior team has been playing since the 1996/97 season, starting life in the Craven & District Football League Division Two after the said team had progressed through the junior section within the club. They spent 3 years in the Craven League moving up to the Premier Division and in the last year set a new record of going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. From there they joined the West Riding County Amateur League in Division Two and quickly gained promotion up into the Premier Division where they enjoyed 3 seasons. In season 2002/2003 Silsden set another record in going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. To add to this they also won the West Riding County Challenge Cup for the third successive season. In season 2004/2005 Silsden joined the North West Counties League and gained promotion to the top division in their inaugural season, finishing as runners up to runaway winners Cammell Laird. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this NWCFL Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Silsden AFC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with our own followers are treated to an entertaining game. Town are currently on a great run with three successive victories and seven games unbeaten. Following our 5-0 drubbing of Squires Gate, last Saturday saw the lads battle hard for their 3 -0 home win over a strong West Didsbury and Chorlton outfit. The highlight of the afternoon was Andy Gillespie’s hat-trick but the overall performance of the team was impressive and I am sure Ian Granite will want a repeat today. Silsden also recorded a win last weekend as they edged out Alsager Town 3-2 at the Angel Telecom Stadium with Michael Hall netting a treble for the Cobydalers. Last season we earned a 2-1 home victory over Silsden but were thrashed 7-1 in West Yorkshire; Shaun Judge heading home a consolation goal for Town. We welcome on board Paul Piert, who has joined the Reserve team management from Penlake FC. Paul is no stranger to the club having had a spell as coach with us under Jimmy McBride. We’re delighted Paul accepted our invitation to join us and I am sure the whole club will benefit from his arrival. Don’t forget next Saturday is our Race Night at Windleshaw Sports Club, everyone is welcome with admission just £2 which includes hotpot supper. Details have been confirmed for the Bert Trautmann Memorial game which will take place on Sunday 17th November - full details are in today’s programme. Many thanks to Chris O’Dea of OD’s Designer Clothing who has agreed to sponsor the match and to Rob Lomax of RL ICT Solutions Ltd for his match ball sponsorship. Next up for Town we welcome Congleton Town to Brocstedes Park next Tuesday - full fixture list is in the centre pages Enjoy the game. John McKiernan Chairman St Helens Town AFC

Town v West Didsbury . . . Saturday 12th October 2013 NWCFL, Premier Division St Helens Town 3-0 West Didsbury & Chorlton St Helens Town extended their winning streak to three matches as they defeated West Didsbury & Chorlton at Brocstedes Park to go to 7th in the North West Counties League, Premier Division table. The early stages of the contest were a battle of attrition as the visitors playing a conservative 4-5-1 formation, outnumbering the hosts in midfield and looking to keep them out with sheer volume of numbers. As such the opening exchanges saw most of the ball in the middle of the park with a few forays forward for both sides coming to nothing. The first real noteworthy incident saw Adam Storey chase onto a through ball and get in front of David Conlon the defender then proceeded to pull the striker back for around 6 yards allowing the ball to get into the box and the visiting stopper collect the ball but no foul was given by the match officials. Storey was again in the action on 23 minutes when he collected a flick on by Connor Sanderson to advance through on goal but Ben Simpson in the West Didsbury goal stood up well and blocked the strikers’ effort. Further pressure saw Storey receive the ball in the box with his back to goal and turn before firing an effort which looked to be beating the keeper but was blocked by Conlon and the ball went over the bar. The home side broke the deadlock on 42 minutes when Storey turned provider as he fed the ball into Andy Gillespie who continued his prolific streak receiving the ball just inside the box and powering his shot past the keeper to send Town into the break in the lead. The visitors came back at Town after the interval and had a quarter of an hour spell where they changed their formation to a more attacking 4-4-2 and looked to level matters. The best chances in this spell saw a counter attack down the right where Tre Baldwin-Willis advanced and centred towards substitute Thomas Walsh but he put his free header over the bar. A few minutes later Richmond Botchey got down the left flank and sent a dangerous cross into the box which was turned behind by a defender for a corner which came to nothing. Similarly to Tuesday Town responded to the pressure in the best possible way by netting themselves after Storey had drawn a double save from Simpson it was strike partner Gillespie who added his and Town’s second as he latched onto a returned clearance sprang the offside trap and lobbed an effort over the advancing stopper. At the other end Ciaran Gibson was called into action for the first time as he did well to turn an effort from Botchey over the bar. Gillespie spurned a chance to complete his hat-trick on 79 minutes when he latched onto a long kick by Gibson and beat his defender but his effort went just wide from a tight angle, he did however make amends a few minutes later when Storey did well on the right and sent the ball into the box for Gillespie to send home with a stooping header for his fifth goal in four matches, securing all three points and making it seven unbeaten for Town. St Helens Town; Gibson, Tingay, Judge, Mawdsley (C), Coyle, Ashton, Sykes-Wright (Parish 71), D. Owens, Storey, Gillespie (Milne 84), Sanderson (Weaver 87). Sub Not Used; Crompton, Pullinger. A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league.

Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place publicaccess AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. St Helens Town Commercial Manager, Darryl Picton, said: “The idea to forge this partnership came from Fabrice’s story. “Never before have I witnessed such an event that has brought football fans, clubs and

. . . Our Charity Partner players together in support of one man as what happened on that horrific day at White Hart Lane. The story touched the hearts of everyone and transcended sport. Those events really hit home to everyone at St Helens Town how quickly and unexpectedly tragedy can strike in a community and having access to this essential equipment will save hundreds of lives. “We are proud to be associated with Hearts and Goals and with Fabrice, and we will work tirelessly throughout the year to raise every penny possible for the campaign.” Trudie Lobban MBE, Founder and CEO of Arrhythmia Alliance, said: “We are absolutely delighted St Helens Town AFC have chosen our Hearts & Goals campaign as their official charity campaign. “Hearts & Goals focuses on tackling the UK’s biggest killer, sudden cardiac arrest, which kills 100,000 people in the UK every year. We have already been able to help communities up and down the country place lifesaving AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and with partners like St Helens we can continue this work. “It is clear all involved at the club are very passionate about the campaign and we are delighted to welcome them on board.” A host of fundraising events are already planned throughout the year, including a a Race Night on Saturday 26th October and Comedy & Curry Night on Saturday 7th December. For full details of events or to make a donation to the campaign contact Darryl Picton on 07908 833 554 or by email at sthelenstownafc@gmail.com Visit www.heartsandgoals.org for more information.

Town v Squires Gate . . . St Helens Town 5-0 Squires Gate Tuesday 8th October 2013, NWCF League Premier Division It’s six games unbeaten now for St. Helens Town and this latest victory over a useful Squires Gate outfit who have had their own run of success recently shows how far the club has come since the FA Vase debacle at Pontefract Collieries. The Blackpool side contributed a good deal to this game, hitting the bar twice in the second half, but St. Helens could have scored ten, such was the extent of their supremacy, particularly going forward. The Town forwards simply ran riot, with Adam Storey, Andy Gillespie and Connor Sanderson helping themselves to a feast of chances. Storey set the scene after 15 minutes when he fired narrowly wide of the far post from a tight angle. Five minutes later, he linked with Gillespie, drew the keeper and Gillespie just missed at the other post. St. Helens took the lead on 37 minutes when, from a corner, Storey drew the defence and Sanderson ghosted through behind him and placed a glancing header past Fletcher in the Squires Gate goal. Four minutes later, Town went 2-0 up when a stray back pass caught the central defenders napping and Gillespie dashed into the gap between them and fired home from close range. Gillespie himself could have extended the lead further just before the interval, but having latched on to a failed clearance, could only blast his shot over the bar. Squires Gate have earned a reputation of late of coming from behind to win matches and they began the second half on the attack. However, Town stormed back and Sanderson went close on 50 minutes, hitting over the bar following a flowing move. A minute later and another training ground move saw Storey put Gillespie through on the keeper who did well to turn the shot over the line for a corner. Sanderson, however, could not find the net from a shot from close range. The result was confirmed on the hour mark when Shaun Judge, running through from 40 yards past a number of bewildered defenders, found a series of gaps. He dribbled through, side-stepped the final challenge and fired home to put his side three up. Five minutes later, Gillespie intercepted a loose pass, turned but shot just wide. The fourth goal came after 84 minutes and fell to Connor Sanderson. He split the defence with his electrifying pace, drew Fletcher and placed his shot perfectly between the final two defenders. If anything, his third goal in the last minute upstaged his earlier efforts. Receiving the ball at pace dashing towards the corner of the penalty area, he hit it on the volley and his shot flew over the head of the keeper into the top corner. This spectacular win moved Town into eighth place in the table and, with a run of four more home league games to come before the end of the month, they have every chance of strengthening their position in the top half of the table. With no midweek game next week, their next fixture is at Brocstedes Park on Saturday, 19th October against Silsden, a game brought forward from April. NWCFL News . . . Widnes Vikings enjoyed some unexpected national coverage on Wednesday morning when they were featured live on TalkSport Radio. Station host Colin Murray, alongside studio companions Steve Bunce and Didi Hamann, was running the rule over the day's sports stories and with a lack of senior fixtures in the run up to the international weekend, one of the station's staff began looking at non-league fixtures being played on Wednesday. After noticing that the oldest football team in the world, Sheffield FC were playing that evening, they began searching for a new club also playing that night, and that resulted in a call to Vikings Secretary Bill Morley, with an invitation to join an on-air discussion. Richard Smales, Vikings' Commercial Manager, took up the interview opportunity and he joined the studio guests and Richard Timms, Chairman of Sheffield FC, live on air around 10.30 am on Wednesday morning. "With a nationwide audience of millions of listeners each day, it was an opportunity as a growing football club we couldn't pass up, to promote the Widnes Vikings FC name to all football fans around the country", said Richard. "The topic of discussion surrounded Sheffield FC, who are the world's oldest football club, and ourselves being one of the newest clubs to join the football pyramid. The station picked us out as we were the newest formed club playing on Wednesday evening along with the oldest club, and the story of Old v New was put together in the studio. What shocked us the most was when Colin Murray suggested arranging an exhibition match between Widnes Vikings FC and Sheffield FC, the oldest club versus a new club, and that he and his guests would all come along to watch, and promote the teams even further through newspaper articles and much more. We will be putting a good amount of effort into making the event happen". LANDMARKS Connor Sanderson's second goal for St Helens Town, Town's fourth in the 5-0 win over Squires Gate, was their 2,100th League goal. Wigan Robin Park reached 300 League points courtesy of their 1-1 draw with Silsden.

Back to Business . . . Back in 2009, St Helens Town celebrated the 60th anniversary of the transfer of our legendary goalkeeper and Club President Bert Trautmann (left) with a star studded game against a team of former Man City players. Following the sad news earlier this year that Bert had passed away at his home in Spain at the age of 89, I made contact with Manchester City FC and both clubs once again felt a need to join together to mark the occasion and although this time on sadder terms, it was unanimously decided that the contribution of this iconic man to the history of both clubs needed to remembered and celebrated. I can now proudly confirm that the Bert Trautmann Memorial Game will take place between St Helens Town and Man City Past Players XI on Sunday 17th November 2013 at Prescot Cables FC’s Hope Street Ground. Kick Off 2pm. After much discussion on a suitable venue for the game to be played, taking into account that our club currently are without our own ground, the popular choice was Hope Street, Prescot. Town tasted there first major success at Hope Street in 1949 when the team, including Bert in goal lifted the George Mahon Trophy in the final in front of 9000 people. I would like to extend the thanks of everyone at St Helens Town to the committee and management at Prescot Cables FC for allowing us to stage the game at the club. Man City and their Past Players Association, of which Bert was also a member are very keen to make this tribute a very special occasion and our warm fondness and love for Bert in clearly echoed at City. Our Premier League friends have committed to sending a strong team of former players for the game, many of them club legends in their own right as well as a number of high profile guests. Amongst the players who are hoped to be in attendance is Former City, Utd and England winger Peter Barnes, whose late father Ken also played with Bert at Man City. Other names mentioned but yet to be confirmed in the star studded City team are Shaun Goater, Uwe Rosler, Didi Hamann, Asa Hartford, Steve Redmond, The Brightwell Brothers, Eric Nixon and Andy Morrison. It is also hoped that amongst our VIP guests on the day will be members of the Trautmann family and some of Bert’s former team mates as well as The Mayor of St Helens Cllr Andy Bowden, Representatives of the Borough Authorities and Ambassadors of Manchester City. The day should be a wonderful occasion for all football fans both marking the sad passing and celebrating the life of an incredible man. Proceeds from the game will be used to support a number of charities including our adopted charity Hearts & Goals, The Trautmann Foundation and The Mayor’s Charity, and we ask that fans of all clubs come along and support this very special day.
