Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Squires Gate. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. Since we convened here 10 days ago to take on Bacup & Rossendale Borough we have had a frustrating couple of matches, as I write the day after the Runcorn Linnets game. We have played out two 1-1 draws but we are frustrated not to have taken maximum return from these games. The game against Bacup saw us conceded after only 72 seconds after a defensive mix up but we recovered our composure and Danny Owens open his Town account less than a minute later to level matters. We then dominated the exchanges and when Adam Storey was fouled in the area, September Player of the month Shaun Judge stepped up to take to spot-kick with the three points there for the taking but the visiting stopper was able to thwart him and despite two good penalty shouts in the closing stages for Town the points were shared. We then moved on to visit one of the League form sides Runcorn Linnets who the previous match had beaten Cammell Laird to advance to the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, we turned in an excellent performance and after soaking up some early pressure from the Linnets we grew stronger as the game wore on and started to test the home stopper. Andy Gillespie who had been rewarded for his goal scoring feats in the Reserves had a great chance to break the deadlock when he turned his marker before rounding the keeper but his touch was a little heavy and could not apply the final finish to net. The visitors did take the lead on 82 minutes when a move down the left saw a ball worked into the box and after a couple of thwarted efforts the ball was fired home by Storey. Town looked to be rolling towards a well deserved victory but a crazy spell saw a Town foray forward and Storey chase the ball down the Runcorn keeper collected and they took a side step towards the striker before sending his knee into his abdomen in what was a blatant act of violent conduct neither the referee nor the assistant deemed this to be a foul. To rub salt in the wounds the keeper started a counter attack which saw the home side level and leave a bitter taste in the mouth. With an earlier print deadline than normal we will have gone to print prior to the visit to Glossop North End on Saturday but we now come into a vast spell of home games 10 of our next 11 matches are here and in this spell we play plenty of sides in and around us in the table and we must build on the good performances to ensure that we consolidate a position well away from the relegation zone. Town will be seeking to avenge the 3-0 reverse at the hands of this evening’s visitors back in August, in what was a poor all round display but fingers crossed that on recent form this is a thing of the past! Let’s get behind Town this evening and hopefully cheer them onto a victory. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . The club was originally formed as Squires Gate British Legion F.C. in 1948 and played in the Blackpool & District Amateur League. In Coronation year, 1953 the club changed its name to Squires Gate F.C. and won its first honour in the leagues Rawling Sheild. In the years that followed, the ‘Gate’ added to their silverware by securing the Division One title twice in 1956/56 and 1957/58 and also the Blackwell Cup in 1958/59 and 1959/60. The club joined the Flyde District League for one season only in 1960/61, winning the Flyde Cup and reaching the final of the Bannister Cup. In 1961 they moved up to the West Lancashire League where they played for 30 years. They were promoted from The West Lancashire League Division 2 as the Champions in 1981, but apart from that title win the Division 1 Richardson Cup win in 1986/87 was the clubs only major honour of that period. The club won the Division Two title again in 1987/88 and gained promotion back to the Leagues top flight. Squires Gate’s home ground School Lane adjoins former North West Counties outfit Blackpool Wren Rovers home Bruce Park. The two grounds were fashioned out of a corporate waste tip in the late 1950’s. Leased to the clubs in 1961, originally the clubs played on two adjacent pitches with nothing more than a rope separating them. Over the years the two grounds were segregated and developed into two NWCFL standard grounds. The club have made steady progress since being elected to they North West Counties League Division Two for the 1991/92 season. The club ended that first season in 14th place after struggling to adapt to the step up in standard. The club won the NWCFL Fair Play award for the 1993/94 season and were losing finalists in the Division Two Trophy in 1997/98. Gate struggled at the wrong end of the second division for some years before a they just missed out on promotion with a third placed finish in the 1998-99 season. The club now boasts a licensed clubhouse and three seated stands. The millennium was celebrated with the erection of floodlights and the completion of the largest stand. They won the Division Two Trophy in 2001/2 beating Bacup Borough in an exciting final and won promotion to the First Division the season after finishing 3rd in the table and accepting the promotion place left vacant by Stand Athletic who withdrew from the league. Their first season in the top flight saw them finish in a very respectable12th position. 2005/6 saw the club finish in 14th position but it was their FA Vase exploits that the Gate fans will remind you of as they advanced from the 1st qualifying round all the way to the Quarter Finals where they went down 2-0 to Hillingdon Borough who were eventual beaten finalists. 2006/7 saw Gate have a mixed for start and manager Stuart Parker was sacked after an 8-0 defeat by FC United and former manager Jed Starkey has returned to take up the reigns. . . . Squires Gate FC club finished the season in 18th position. Andy Clarkson took up the reigns for the start of 2007/8 season and Gate reaping the rewards of his stewardship as they finished in 6th position their highest ever league position in his first term in charge of the club. In recent years, Gate's real achievements have been in developing the Club itself. Some of the former players who moved to School Road in 1960 are still around, working in various capacities, most notably Brian Addison, who has progressed from player to Linesman, to Secretary, to Chairman, and eventually to the most important job of all: groundsman. Once the pitch had been re-laid some ten years ago, Brian has gradually turned the pitch into one of the best in the League, and with the opening of the new changing rooms a couple of years later (named after one of the Club's great stalwarts, Wilf Carr,) the ground has become unrecognisable since those early days. The complete refurbishment of the Clubhouse in 2006, with air-conditioning added the following year, and now the upgrading of the floodlights, means that Squires Gate can be rightly proud of what they have created since those far-off days playing on "the tip". 2008/9 saw the coast outfit finish in a very respectable 10th position but Clarkson left the club at the end of the season to take up a position in the AFC Fylde coaching staff. Gate appointed Russ McKenna to the hot-seat with Mark Moretti as his assistant for the 2009/10 season. The new duo did a good job of consolidating the clubs position within the Premier Division as they steered the club to a 13th placed finish. 2010/11 saw the club build on that finish as Gate were one of the surprise packages in the Premier Division finishing in 9th. The 2011/12 season saw Squires Gate win almost as many league games including 6-1 & 5-3 victories over Town and completed a treble with a 1-0 FA Vase win too but fell down the table and finished the season in a disappointing 17th position. Last term saw the seaside outfit struggle and despite a change of management with Dave McCann taking over the reigns in February they could not avoid finishing in the relegation zone but similar to Town the season before their Premier Division status we ensured off the field when the NWCL did not receive a club back from the level above. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this NWCFL Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Squires Gate FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with our own followers are treated to an entertaining game. Many thanks to this tonight’s match and ball sponsors The Window Warehouse, Aintree for their continued support. My notes have been produced prior to last Saturday’s trip to Glossop North End and I can only hope that our recent form continued at Surrey Street. Our last home fixture saw Bacup & Rossendale Borough earn a share of the spoils with a 1-1 draw, both goals coming in the opening minutes of the game. A saved penalty very late in the game denied Town all three points! Last Tuesday we made the short trip to the Millbank Linnets Stadium where the lads put on an excellent show to earn another point. Adam Storey put Town in front on 82 mins but the home levelled in stoppage time in somewhat controversial fashion (see Glyn Jones’ match report). Town will be looking to avenge the 0-3 defeat suffered at School Road back early August for what was out first away game of the season. I’m sure both sides will be hoping to avoid the relegation battle we both become embroiled in last term. Tonight is the start of an amazing run of ten home fixtures between now and the end of next month, our only away visit sees us make the return trip to Bacup at the start of November! Our September monthly 500 Club Draw took place last week and congratulations to Ann Jones (374) £150, G Noblett (528) £75 and Jeff Voller (062) £25. Don’t forget our Race Night which will take place on Saturday 26th October, 8pm at Windleshaw Sport Club. Admission is £2 and includes a hotpot supper. Congratulations to Shaun Judge who was voted the Johnsons Toyota Liverpool Town Player of the Month for September. Shaun will choose a brand new Toyota car for a week from our Main Sponsors. Details have been confirmed for the Bert Trautmann Memorial game which will take place on Sunday 17th November - full details are in tonight’s programme Enjoy the game. Town v Bacup . . . Late penalty miss costs Town a win North West Counties Football League Premier Division St Helens Town 1-1 Bacup & Rossendale Borough St. Helens Town extended their unbeaten sequence to three games against Bacup & Rossendale Borough on Saturday, but squandered the opportunity to record a valuable victory when they missed a penalty five minutes from time. Both goals in the 1-1 draw came in the opening three minutes, Bacup going ahead when a defensive error found Simon Thompson unmarked at the left post and he had plenty of time to pick his spot as he placed the ball past Ciaran Gibson after 2 minutes. Town equalised almost immediately through Daniel Owens – his second goal in as many games since signing from Stockport Sports – following a corner which the Bacup defence failed to clear, the ball going in at the second attempt. The game looked likely to be full of goals but, as is often the case at Brocstedes Park, both sides had difficulty coping with the stiff breeze and many opportunities were missed playing the ball in the air when it was surely better to keep it on the ground. The move of the match came after a quarter of an hour when Shaun Judge broke down the wing. He passed to Greg Harrison, who executed a quick one-two with Ste Milne but the full-back’s shot was blocked by John Ogden in the Bacup goal. Ogden was Bacup’s best player throughout as he kept them in the hunt with a series of saves. In another good move on 22 minutes, Paul Cook-Hannah held up the ball to set up Judge, but his powerful drive was blocked by Gareth Wager at the edge of the visitors’ box. Judge had another opportunity two minutes later, with a free-kick following a poor challenge on Cole Ashton, but his shot went high over the bar. A minute later, another sweeping move saw the ball pushed out to Nathan Parish, but his effort could only find the side netting. On the half hour, another chance fell to Owens, but Ogden saved his header. With half-time approaching, Bacup pushed upfield and it took two goal-line clearances in quick succession to keep the visitors at bay, then Town had a great chance to go ahead when the ball was crossed to Ashton, but Owens arrived at the same time and shot wide, with Ashton the better-placed to score. Ogden produced another good save from Judge in the opening exchanges of the second half and, with 20 minutes left, Judge again, this time with a header, found Ogden perfectly placed to produce a save. With only seven minutes remaining, Harrison fired in a ball across the Bacup goal but nobody could get in the decisive touch and the chance went begging. The decisive moment of the game arrived on 85 minutes, when centre-back Laquan Esdaille was adjudged to have backed into substitute Adam Storey in the box, bringing him down in the process, but Judge’s spot kick could only find Ogden’s hands and with it two points blew away in the wind. Town did have another two penalty shouts turned down in the closing minutes, one for a foul and the other a hand-ball, but the game ended with Gibson saving a Bacup shot low down in the home goal. A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league.

Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place public-access AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. St Helens Town Commercial Manager, Darryl Picton, said: “The idea to forge this partnership came from Fabrice’s story.

. . . Our Charity Partner “Never before have I witnessed such an event that has brought football fans, clubs and players together in support of one man as what happened on that horrific day at White Hart Lane. “The story touched the hearts of everyone and transcended sport. Those events really hit home to everyone at St Helens Town how quickly and unexpectedly tragedy can strike in a community and having access to this essential equipment will save hundreds of lives. “We are proud to be associated with Hearts and Goals and with Fabrice, and we will work tirelessly throughout the year to raise every penny possible for the campaign.” Trudie Lobban MBE, Founder and CEO of Arrhythmia Alliance, said: “We are absolutely delighted St Helens Town AFC have chosen our Hearts & Goals campaign as their official charity campaign. “Hearts & Goals focuses on tackling the UK’s biggest killer, sudden cardiac arrest, which kills 100,000 people in the UK every year. “We have already been able to help communities up and down the country place lifesaving AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and with partners like St Helens we can continue this work. “It is clear all involved at the club are very passionate about the campaign and we are delighted to welcome them on board.” A host of fundraising events are already planned throughout the year, including a Question of Sport tournament evening on Saturday 24th August and a Race Night on Friday 18th October. For full details of events or to make a donation to the campaign contact Darryl Picton on 07908 833 554 or by email at sthelenstownafc@gmail.com Visit www.heartsandgoals.org for more information.

Runcorn Linnets v Town . . . Town robbed of a fine win at Runcorn Runcorn Linnets 1-1 St Helens Town Tuesday 1st October 2013, NWCFL Premier Division St. Helens Town extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 1-1 draw at Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday, but the scoreline did scant justice to a fine performance which should have earned a memorable victory. Runcorn went into the game on the back of an excellent FA Cup Second Qualifying Round win against Cammell Laird and looking forward to the next round at Skrill Conference North side North Ferriby United and St. Helens would probably have settled for a draw before the NW Counties derby kicked off but, in the end, the Linnets’ fans breathed a collective sigh of relief as they levelled the game with a controversial equaliser in the final minute of added time. Town were left to feel aggrieved, having been the better side for most of the game and deservedly led 1-0 with an Adam Storey goal, scored after 82 minutes. However, in the fourth minute of added time, Storey, who had been a thorn in Runcorn’s side throughout the game, moved in to challenge the Linnets’ goalkeeper Robertson as he gathered the ball. Robertson then felled Storey with a blatant knee to the groin, apparently unseen by either the referee or his assistant who was level with play. He then cleared the ball upfield for substitute Thompson to poke home the equalising goal. As the crowd celebrated, Storey had to be helped off, clearly in agony, whilst Robertson protested his innocence to the travelling fans. The game, which should have finished in a St. Helens win, came to an end within seconds in a 1-1 draw. Runcorn Linnets began the game in confident mood, former Town favourite Chris Lomax prominent in the early stages. Ciaran Gibson in the St. Helens goal saved from Hickey after 12 minutes and there were close calls in the 16th minute when Burke slipped as he made to shoot at goal and two minutes later, when Shaun Judge cleared off his own goal-line, but as the first half progressed, Town began to stifle the Linnets’ attacks and, moving forward, started to create chances of their own, Owens and Storey producing shots which Robertson had to turn round his posts for corners. After a scoreless first half, Storey had two early chances in the second period which Robertson did well to keep out and Andy Gillespie, promoted from the Reserves, was narrowly wide with a shot which went across the face of the home goal after 70 minutes. The same player had the best chance of the game so far when, after 75 minutes, he broke from 30 yards and, rather than shoot at goal, elected to round the keeper, but his touch was just too strong and the ball went out of play with the goal gaping wide. Connor Sanderson was replaced by Neil Weaver and his injection of pace was decisive on 82 minutes as he tore down the touchline, dispossessed then rounded the Runcorn full-back and passed to Michael Sykes-Wright who laid on an inch-perfect pass across goal to Adam Storey who fired in off his near post for what should have been the winning goal. Town continued in the ascendency for the remaining minutes but the game turned following Robertson’s outrageous foul on Storey and, from the resultant clearance, Thompson levelled the scores with a scrappy goal at the other end. Nevertheless, this was a tremendous performance from a spirited Town side who, if they continue in such form, will have no difficulty in establishing themselves in the top half of the table, well away from relegation troubles. NWCFL News . . . Runcorn Linnets Programme Editor Jon Urquhart has introduced an additional incentive for supporters to buy a copy of the club’s match programme, Runcorn Review. From now on, anyone who buys the programme at Linnets home games has a chance of winning a unique prize – a “Bank Of Runcorn” £5 note which carries a picture of Linnets manager Joey Dunn and can be redeemed at the club’s tea bar. A number of Linnets officials have been involved in developing the idea, as Jon explained. “I took over the match programme editing duties from my good friend Mark Buckley at the beginning of this season”, he said. “We already had a good match day programme and I didn’t want to just steam in and change everything, just tweak one or two things to make it as unique as I could, and hopefully add a few more articles. I was discussing the new format of the programme with our club life president Alan Jones, who sells a fair bit of advertising space in the programme, when he suggested the idea of giving out a prize when you purchase the programme, possibly the entrance fee. I liked the sound of it and as the new colour format of the programme was likely to mean a small increase in price, decided I would give it a go at the next opportunity. “When the first colour version of the Runcorn Review was ready to go to the printers, I asked Mark Buckley if he would print me some slips out that could be placed into the programme, but when he said “why don’t we print a fiver of with Joey’s head on it and call it Bank Of Runcorn” I was sold instantly. “So far no away fan has found the fiver but I’m looking forward to when they do. It is a selling point for the programme but that’s not the sole reason why we decided to go with it. It’s a unique idea and something which keeps the Runcorn Review interactive with the fans, which was my goal when I took over the editing duties”. Norton United – as well as being recognised for their efforts on the pitch, winners of Norton United’s player of the month award will look smart off it, thanks to a new sponsorship deal arranged by ace negotiator and club General Manager John Cotton. Cotto has set up a deal with local hairdressers Rogers Barbers to sponsor the awards, and as a result the winning Norton player each month will be rewarded with a free treatment at the firm's salon in Smallthorne.

A Word from the Boss . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for tonight’s NWCFL Premier Division fixture. It’s been a while since I last wrote a column for the match day programme - as far back as last season so hope you haven’t missed me to much? Things on the pitch over the last couple of weeks have dramatically improved, lots of players have left and we have added some quality in Danny Owens ,Ciaran Gibson and Adam Storey. It’s not come as any surprise to the coaching staff that results and performances have been better of late. After the Pontefract game we decided to release a few players as their attitude and commitment didn’t match ours. Our aim for the season is to be more consistent, keep picking up results and try to better results from last season where and when we can. We have had a few setbacks but overall we are improving week by week. The squad we have now have great spirit and refuse to accept defeat without a fight and that’s the mentality we look for in a player when we look to add to the team. We now have a settled squad and have a really good back up of Reserve and Youth team players who are all hungry to progress. Results have been good of late, unbeaten in our last four fixtures which have included away trips to Bootle, Runcorn Linnets and Abbey Hey and a home fixture against Bacup. The fact we were very disappointed to come away from Tuesday night’s game away at Runcorn Linnets with a point just goes to show how far we have come and to go to Bootle and win shows the character of this young side. Club Captain Lee Crompton has been injured since pre season which has been a big loss for us. Lee leads the way on the pitch with his determination and attitude but I have to give credit to Shaun Judge, Andy Mawdsley, Paul Cook and Cole Ashton who have all stepped up in Lee’s absence and done a fantastic job. Also Andy Gillespie who has stepped up from the Reserves and who I personally thought had a really good game against Linnets. We can’t rest on these good results we know every game is as hard as the next one but I am confident if we keep working hard on the training field and in games we will continue to get results and improve week by week . Back to Business . . . Back in 2009, St Helens Town celebrated the 60th anniversary of the transfer of our legendary goalkeeper and Club President Bert Trautmann (left) with a star studded game against a team of former Man City players. Following the sad news earlier this year that Bert had passed away at his home in Spain at the age of 89, I made contact with Manchester City FC and both clubs once again felt a need to join together to mark the occasion and although this time on sadder terms, it was unanimously decided that the contribution of this iconic man to the history of both clubs needed to remembered and celebrated. I can now proudly confirm that the Bert Trautmann Memorial Game will take place between St Helens Town and Man City Past Players XI on Sunday 17th November 2013 at Prescot Cables FC’s Hope Street Ground. Kick Off 2pm. After much discussion on a suitable venue for the game to be played, taking into account that our club currently are without our own ground, the popular choice was Hope Street, Prescot. Town tasted there first major success at Hope Street in 1949 when the team, including Bert in goal lifted the George Mahon Trophy in the final in front of 9000 people. I would like to extend the thanks of everyone at St Helens Town to the committee and management at Prescot Cables FC for allowing us to stage the game at the club. Man City and their Past Players Association, of which Bert was also a member are very keen to make this tribute a very special occasion and our warm fondness and love for Bert in clearly echoed at City. Our Premier League friends have committed to sending a strong team of former players for the game, many of them club legends in their own right as well as a number of high profile guests. Amongst the players who are hoped to be in attendance is Former City, Utd and England winger Peter Barnes, whose late father Ken also played with Bert at Man City. Other names mentioned but yet to be confirmed in the star studded City team are Shaun Goater, Uwe Rosler, Didi Hamann, Asa Hartford, Steve Redmond, The Brightwell Brothers, Eric Nixon and Andy Morrison. It is also hoped that amongst our VIP guests on the day will be members of the Trautmann family and some of Bert’s former team mates as well as The Mayor of St Helens Cllr Andy Bowden, Representatives of the Borough Authorities and Ambassadors of Manchester City. The day should be a wonderful occasion for all football fans both marking the sad passing and celebrating the life of an incredible man. Proceeds from the game will be used to support a number of charities including our adopted charity Hearts & Goals, The Trautmann Foundation and The Mayor’s Charity, and we ask that fans of all clubs come along and support this very special day.
