Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Squires Gate. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. Due to an early print deadline for this issue and the unusual fact that we will have, weather permitting have taken on Tranmere Rovers here on Wednesday, the content in the programme will not be as up to date as a normal issue. Hopefully we will have given a good account of ourselves against our illustrious visitors and fingers crossed our name will be in the hat for the Semi Finals of the Liverpool Senior Cup. Congratulations to January Player of the Month Mike Grogan who has had an excellent first month on the books here at St Helens Town and thoroughly deserves his award. He can enjoy picking a car from Toyota as part of his prize. Onto this afternoonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s match and we welcome our friends from Blackpool , Squires Gate to Edge Green Street. Town will be looking to take revenge for our 4-0 reverse at School Lane back in October on a night when it seemed everything that could go wrong did go wrong. This afternoonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s visitors are flying high at the moment having started this week in 4th position and have recently recorded victories over Bootle and Winsford United to further enhance their position amongst the front runners. Lee and the lads will know that will have to be on top of their game this afternoon if they are to get a positive result from this contest. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter against our friends and rivals from Squires Gate FC. Let’s hope the Gate players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own support are treated to an entertaining encounter. Due to printing deadlines this week our match programme is a little ‘dated’ having been printed prior to our Liverpool Senior Cup game against Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday evening (and other midweek results) let’s hope the result went our way! Squires Gate arrive at Ashton currently occupying a top four spot and have been the surprise team of the season in many quarters. We suffered a 4-0 thumping at School Road back in late October when the home side converted second half chances through Thomas, Mayers, Lewis and McKendrick while Town could have played ‘til midnight and not scored. The seasider’s last outing saw them celebrate their 750th NWCFL league game with a 1-0 victory at league leaders Winsford United and will no doubt prove to be another tough obstacle this afternoon. I did enjoy reading the great bit of publicity for Squires Gate last week when they made it into the News of the World as the ‘brainiest team in non-league football’ boasting eight teachers among their ranks (full story via the Vodkat League website www.vodkatleague.com). There have been a couple of managerial changes this week as Chris Wilcock has left Winsford United to rejoin Woodley Sports leaving former Town player Ian Street to take over the reigns while Neil Gill has resigned as boss at Alsager Town. The League are also on the look-out for a new sponsor for next season; no doubt a tough ask in these financially tough times (I am writing this a couple of hours after the transfer deadline on Monday evening as Chelsea complete the £50m transfer of Torres at the same time as posting losses of £71m for the year end June 2010 - has the football world gone mad?) Two away trips follow today’s encounter with Barnoldswick Town the destination next Saturday followed by a trip to Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday 15th February. We return ‘home’ on Saturday 19th February when Ashton Athletic are our visitors. Don’t forget to join us in the clubhouse after the game for the usual postmatch debate and the St Helens Town Man of the Match awards. In Town Today . . . The club was originally formed as Squires Gate British Legion F.C. in 1948 and played in the Blackpool & District Amateur League. In Coronation year, 1953 the club changed its name to Squires Gate F.C. and won its first honour in the leagues Rawling Sheild. In the years that followed, the ‘Gate’ added to their silverware by securing the Division One title twice in 1956/56 and 1957/58 and also the Blackwell Cup in 1958/59 and 1959/60. The club joined the Flyde District League for one season only in 1960/61, winning the Flyde Cup and reaching the final of the Bannister Cup. In 1961 they moved up to the West Lancashire League where they played for 30 years. They were promoted from The West Lancashire League Division 2 as the Champions in 1981, but apart from that title win the Division 1 Richardson Cup win in 1986/87 was the clubs only major honour of that period. The club won the Division Two title again in 1987/88 and gained promotion back to the Leagues top flight. Squires Gate’s home ground School Lane adjoins former North West Counties outfit Blackpool Wren Rovers home Bruce Park. The two grounds were fashioned out of a corporate waste tip in the late 1950’s. Leased to the clubs in 1961, originally the clubs played on two adjacent pitches with nothing more than a rope separating them. Over the years the two grounds were segregated and developed into two North West Counties League standard grounds. The club have made steady progress since being elected to they North West Counties League Division Two for the 1991/92 season. The club ended that first season in 14th place after struggling to adapt to the step up in standard. The club won the NWCFL Fair Play award for the 1993/94 season and were losing finalists in the Division Two Trophy in 1997/98. Gate struggled at the wrong end of the second division for some years before a they just missed out on promotion with a third placed finish in the 1998-99 season. The club now boasts a licensed clubhouse and three seated stands. The millennium was celebrated with the erection of floodlights and the completion of the largest stand. . . . Squires Gate FC They won the Division Two Trophy in 2001/2 beating Bacup Borough in an exciting final and won promotion to the First Division the season after finishing 3rd in the table and accepting the promotion place left vacant by Stand Athletic who withdrew from the league. Their first season in the top flight saw them finish in a very respectable12th position. 2005/6 saw the club finish in 14th position but it was their FA Vase exploits that the Gate fans will remind you of as they advanced from the 1st qualifying round al the way to the Quarter Finals where they went down 2-0 to Hillingdon Borough who were eventual beaten finalists. 2006/7 saw Gate have a mixed for start and manager Stuart Parker was sacked after an 8-0 defeat by FC United and former manager Jed Starkey has returned to take up the reigns. The club finished the season in 18th position. Andy Clarkson took up the reigns for the start of 2007/8 season and Gate reaping the rewards of his stewardship as they finished in 6th position their highest ever league position in his first term in charge of the club. In recent years, Gate's real achievements have been in developing the Club itself. Some of the former players who moved to School Road in 1960 are still around, working in various capacities, most notably Brian Addison, who has progressed from player to Linesman, to Secretary, to Chairman, and eventually to the most important job of all: groundsman. Once the pitch had been relaid some ten years ago, Brian has gradually turned the pitch into one of the best in the League, and with the opening of the new changing rooms a couple of years later (named after one of the Club's great stalwarts, Wilf Carr,) the ground has become unrecognisable since those early days. The complete refurbishment of the Clubhouse in 2006, with air-conditioning added the following year, and now the upgrading of the floodlights, means that Squires Gate can be rightly proud of what they have created since those far-off days playing on "the tip". 2008/9 saw the coast outfit finish in a very respectable 10th position but Clarkson left the club at the end of the season to take up a position in the AFC Fylde coaching staff. Gate appointed Russ McKenna to the hot-seat with Mark Moretti as his assistant for the 2009/10 season. The new duo did a good job of consolidating the clubs position within the Premier Division as they steered the club to a 13th placed finish. This term has seen the club build on last season and they have been one of the surprise packages in the Premier Division currently being among the front runners.

Match Report Saturday 15th January 2011 Vodkat League, Premier Division St Helens Town 3-3 Rossendale United Town put on a late, late show to gain a share of the spoils against basement side Rossendale United at Edge Green Street this afternoon. The early stages saw a brace of goals as first the visitors went ahead after 6 minutes on their first foray forward. A break saw a free kick awarded centrally on the edge of the Town penalty area and Jason Hart stepped up to fire home. The lead was short lived as three minutes later debutant James Croxton delivered a fine cross from the left wing which Liam Pearson headed home to record his 20th goal of the season. The remainder of the half belonged to the hosts as in the pouring rain they took the game to their visitors up the hill. Before the mid-point of the half Croxton and Iain Dyson had warmed the hand of Ben Proctor in the Rossendale goal. A good move from the hosts culminated with Pearson linking with Dyson and the latter tried his luck from the edge of the area but Proctor managed to hold his effort. At the other end Mark Coyne fed Curtis Gallagher, he turned and shot but a good block from Che Morgan averted the danger. Just after the half hour mark Andy Morris found John Elias on the right wing and the full back advanced before unleashing an effort from 25 yards that looked to be arrowing home but for a touch from Proctor which diverted it onto the crossbar. With the interval approaching Town were awarded an indirect free kick in the area after Proctor had picked up a back pass, Morris touched the ball to Pearson and his goal bound effort was in target but deflected by one of the massed ranks of Rossendale defenders gathered on the goal line. The final action of the half saw Town have the ball in the back of the net for the second time. Pearson took advantage of a defensive slip to latch onto a through ball and slot home only to be denied by a dubious offside flag. The first good chance of the second period fell to Michael Grogan as he collected a through ball Croxton and advanced into the area he poked an effort past the advancing goalkeeper which was going just wide of the right hand upright and teammate Dyson tried to divert the effort on target but could not reach ii before it went out of play. Town were rocked to fall behind on 56 minutes when a swift Rossendale counter attack saw a Town free kick into the visitors box cleared and quickly the ball was in the back of the Town net as Andrew Smith played a one two with Hart and his shot from just outside the edge of the box took a deflection on its way into the net. Worse was to come for Town as they fell further behind on 69 minutes another counter attack saw the ball moved up the left flank and Hart centred for substitute Michael Burgos to slid the ball home. Town felt aggrieved to not have been awarded a penalty on 76 minutes as Pearson was downed just inside the area but the hosts were awarded a free kick outside the box from which Dysonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s effort struck the wall. Many will have though that as the game reached the final ten minutes of normal time Town were down and out but the recovery started with six minutes remaining a right wing corner from Croxton was powered home by the head of Grogan and soon afterwards Rossendale were reduced to ten men Chris Hilton was sent off for a reckless challenge and Luke Faulkner joined him a few minutes later for foul and abusive language. The fight back looked to have stalled just short but in the fifth minute of added on time with virtually the last kick of the match Michael Fargher passed to Grogan 12 yards out and he slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net to gain a point and deny the visitors their first win since the start of September. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town AFC – A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . A Brief History Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. Ninth place was achieved in 2009/10 but Bickerstaffe stepped down at the end of the season and Lee Riley was promoted to manager, with Phil Burton (ex-Prescot Cables) as his assistant. A number of new faces have joined the club, most significantly striker Liam Pearson and goalkeeper Dale Newbrook and this combination of youth and experience is looking to improve on last season’s progress. The Knowsley Road ground was vacated in August 2010, prior to its demolition, necessitating a temporary move to share Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street facilities, but Autumn 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club. Vodkat League News Alverley Remembered Despite the match between Barnoldswick Town and Atherton LR being postponed last Saturday, Town officials decided to proceed with the planned tribute to former Chairman Alverley Ashworth. The game was Town's first scheduled home fixture since Alverley's death at the end of December, and club officials originally planed to have a minute's silence before the 3 pm kick off, with a presentation to Alverley's family afterwards. However, once it became obvious that the game would be off, it was quickly decided that the celebration of Alverley's life should go ahead as planned. Town Programme Editor Peter Naylor explained: "It was felt that, as it was almost a month since Alverley died, as a club we needed to have this celebration. Also, arrangements had been made and wreaths ordered. The celebration was extremely well attended. Alverley's family came as did friends and supporters. At first it had been decided to have a minute's silence but that was quickly changed into a minute's applause, because nobody wanted a sombre atmosphere which the silence would have created. "Everyone gathered just before 3pm around the centre circle. Town captain Russell Clarke carried a wreath which was in the shape of a football in the club's colours on a football pitch, and Robert Grimes carried a photo of Alverley, both of which were placed on the centre spot (both pictured above). After the minute's applause Russell and Robert presented the wreath and picture to Alverley's family. Everyone then retired to the clubhouse where a buffet had been prepared, and had a good natter about Alverley. It was a fantastic send off for a great man." Managerial Change at Formby Formby have announced that Gary Martindale has resigned as first team manager, after just half a season in charge. His assistant Paul Burns has also left the club. Tony Rowan, currently Formby under 15's manager, will take over first team duties in a caretaker manager capacity. In a statement issued via the Formby website, Tony said: "With Formby F.C currently 3rd from bottom in the Premier Division, needless to say there is an awful lot of work to be done. My history of coaching football has always involved the junior and Youth age groups. I have already received phone calls from lads who I coached at local primary schools asking if they can help out and offering their services as players. This all fits in really well with the direction that the owners of Formby F.C wish the club to now be taken in, which is giving priority to youth development. This is the main reason I accepted the 1st team managers role, "I am under no illusions, I see this as a challenging role but one that I am fully committed to and I believe that Formby F.C can in the long term be successful in adopting this Youth Development Policy. I will not promise immediate successes or that we will avoid relegation but what I can promise is that the youth players of Formby, Sefton and the surrounding areas will be given a platform to further their football development and that the team you see will give will be 100% committed . Vodkat League News Search For A New League Sponsor Begins League sponsors Intercontinental Brands have informed the League Management Committee that they will not be renewing their sponsorship of the Vodkat League at the end of the current season in May 2011. The company's sponsorship of the league under the Vodkat brand name began at the start of the 2007-08 season, and has run continuously since then. League Chairman Dave Tomlinson said: "While we are obviously sorry that the partnership with ICB has come to an end, we would like to thank them for their support over the past four seasons. We believe that the arrangement has been beneficial to both parties, and we wish the company well for the future. "We will now obviously be increasing our efforts to secure a new sponsor for next season and beyond." Update On The Reserve Division Cup As in previous seasons, arranging fixtures in the Reserve Division Cup is proving to be a challenge for Fixtures Secretary John Reid. John has various factors to take into account when scheduling games in the competition, and has been additionally hampered by the bad weather. It tends to be a very drawn out competition, due to which grounds are available and arranging the maximum number of fixtures each Saturday, which may mean league games taking preference and thus delaying cup ties. However, the five first round ties have at last been completed and the Quarter Final draw now reads: Ashton Athletic v AFC Liverpool (Playing Saturday 19th February) Barnoldswick Town v Padiham New Mills v Glossop North End Irlam v Bootle (Dates for the remaining ties have still to be arranged) England Call Up for Jack Stone Dominoes youngster Jack Sherratt has been selected for the England Schools Under 18 squad. Jack, who attends the Manchester Metropolitan University Academy in Crewe, will be part of the squad which plays Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland in the Centenary Shield tournament during March and April. He will be joined by fellow Manchester Metropolitan University students Cliff Moyo and Joshua Glover, and all three are Staffordshire youth players who were members of the MMU Academy squad who won the Football Conference Youth Alliance Cup last year. 17 year old Jack, who hails from Alsager, has yet to start a game for Dominoes' first team, but he has come off the bench a couple of times and has impressed manager Shaun Hollinshead. Shaun told The Sentinel newspaper: "I have watched Jack in the two years he has been with us. "He's a well built lad who did particularly well when he came on in our game at Bacup Borough a couple of months ago, so he is one to watch." England start their Centenary Shield campaign with a match against Northern Ireland at AFC Telford on March 4th. They then play Wales at Yeovil Town on March 25th, Scotland at Inverness Caledonian Thistle on April 21st and defending champions the Republic of Ireland at Drogheda FC on April 28th. A look back at Hoghton Road 1946 A consortium of Sutton businessmen led by Mr George Fryer purchased the one time Sutton Cricket Club site from Pilkington Brothers, to re-form St Helens Town AFC. Extensive work is required to re-cultivate the pitch whilst essential buildings are erected from timber supplied by the local collieries. 1948 Supporters Club secure their own premises with the purchase of a timber building from RAF Haydock, which also acts as a refreshment bar. 1949 Supporters raise money to build a grandstand at a cost of ÂŁ1000 whilst residue of the money is put into further development. Construction is subject to struct new legislation enforced by the close vicinity of the railway and concern for public safety following the pre-war disaster at Burnden Park, Bolton. hence a heavy duty concrete structure is specified. 1953 The whole estate is put up for sale whilst the team play home games at Pilkington's City Road ground. 1954 The sale is withdrawn due to pressure group led by Mr George Fryer. 1958 Small clubhouse incorporating officials dressing rooms and an office is erected. 1962 New 200 seater club is built on top of the training pitch. Burnley's ex-St Helens Town star John Connelly performs the opening ceremony. 1966 The club is extended, incorporating dressing rooms and a lounge area. 1972 Further extension of the club includes the relocation of both dressing rooms and stage. Liverpool's Ian St. John performs the opening ceremony.

1978 The ground is completely walled in. 1982 Final phase of the club development is completed with a new roof and new toilet blocks. Covered accommodation built at the Hoghton Road end of the ground to enclose the refreshment bar. Sauna sold off. 1983 Elevated Director's box built over looking the pitch at the Hoghton Road end of the ground. 1984 New players' entrance constructed. 1988 Floodlighting system installed after months of fund-raising. Everton send a strong side to officially open the lights. Salford City are the first team to play Town under floodlights at Hoghton Road. 1990 Runcorn Highfield Rugby League Football Club outfit become tenants at Hoghton Road. 1994 Runcorn Highfield RLFC move to Prescot Cables and St Helens Greyhound Company join Town as tenants. Significant changes are made to the Hoghton Road ground as a new track is laid around the pitch. 1995 Players' entrance 'caged-in' as part of new FA ground Grading requirements. 1996 Floodlighting system upgraded and a new exterior wall is erected. Dressing rooms are upgraded. The ground is used as a location for an episode of the BBC hit comedy/drama series 'Common As Muck' 2000 The final game is played on Hoghton Road when Champions elect are beaten 1-0. St Helens Town relocate to Saints' Knowsley Road and the land is sold to Barratt Homes.

In Other News . . . Surprise announcement from Loughborough Loughborough Dynamo have announced that they have accepted the resignation of joint manager Ian Blyth. In a short statement released following the side's 3-1 win over Newcastle Town, the club announced Blyth was stepping down for personal reasons. The statement read; "The club would like to thank Ian for his tremendous efforts and enthusiasm both on and off the field, and wish him every success for the future. Both Ian and the club are disappointed by his decision but the club fully understand the reasons behind the decision, which were not related to football but to the time involved with his work commitments and family life, Ian felt he could not give the job the commitment needed at this level. Scott Clamp will now take sole charge of first team affairs.

Vodkat League News Managerial Change At Winsford United Winsford United have been left stunned by the news that Manager Chris Willcock has left to take up a new post at Woodley Sports. "We always realised it was something that might happen" said Secretary Bob Astles. "Chris has made no secret of his ambition and anyone looking at the success he has brought to the club this season would see him as a manager of the highest ability". "In my opinion Chris is one of the best managers in non-league football and the opportunity offered by the new regime at Woodley and also the offer of a long contract was just too good for him to refuse". Even then Chris took a few days to make up his mind. "I have thoroughly enjoyed both my spells at Winsford and it was not an easy decision to make", said Willcock "It is a fine club and the support I have received from everyone there has been superb". Chris said his farewells to the players who were clearly shocked by the news but the disappointment was somewhat relieved by the news that the club had immediately offered the manager's job to Assistant Manager Ian Street. "It was a no-brainer" said Astles. "Ian has worked harder than anyone at the club this season and deserves to be given his chance. We are looking for him to continue our push towards the title and hopefully take us into next season". Street has had previous managerial experience with Warrington Town, Bamber Bridge and Witton Albion and although disappointed with Chris's departure he could not conceal his delight at being offered the position.

The Story So Far . . . We have reached that stage again where it is a time to reflect upon the progress made so far. Lee Riley and assistant Phil Burton took over the reins at the start of the season, following on from the achievements of Gary Bickerstaffe. Last season’s finishing position of 9th in the table is still very much within reach and progress has once again been made in the cup competitions. League form has been rather up and down so far. A disappointing start at Alsager was remedied with an excellent win at promotion-chasing Winsford before the FA Cup campaign began. Nostell Miners Welfare were a tough nut to crack, home and away before old foes Glossop prevailed narrowly after extra-time in another replay. The early part of the season was dominated by the move away from Knowsley Road, which was due to close at the end of September. Home league losses to newlypromoted Barnoldswick (0-3) and high-flying Congleton (2-3 in a frenetic finish) were put behind us as we looked forward to the scheduled last hurrah against New Mills on 28th September. Town enthusiasts, groundhoppers and old friends alike were all looking forward to Town’s last match at Knowsley Road and a bumper crowd was anticipated before our lords and masters pulled the plug and the game had to be hastily moved to Atherton Collieries on a wet Tuesday night before a sparse crowd. Saints themselves had enjoyed at least three “last games” at Knowsley Road, yet Town’s final appearance proved, retrospectively, to be the Glossop cup-tie on 28th August. A very disappointing end to what was to have been a very happy occasion. An early season double was gained over Glossop and there was a good win at Silsden’s new ground, but disappointing defeats were suffered at Bootle and Formby. Early FA Vase home games were moved to Alder House as Brodsworth Welfare and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic were put to the sword. The home stage then transferred to Edge Green Street, courtesy of our friends and neighbours Ashton Town and the first game was the FA Vase First Round tie against Oldham Boro. This was followed by a remarkable sequence of six games in which Town netted at least three goals a game. Wins over Atherton LR and away to Padiham preceded a surreal 3-3 home draw with Maine Road, Town leading 3-0 at half-time and narrowly avoiding a last-gasp defeat. Following another three-goal haul against Flixton, Town then scored four against Formby, only to lose 5-4. There then followed a 4-2 win at Rossendale before a perverse 4-0 loss at Squires Gate, in which Town appeared on top for most of the game. The performance of the season was the 2-0 FA Vase win at Winterton Rangers, followed closely by a 3-2 Liverpool Senior Cup victory over Skelmersdale. However, that battling performance was followed by a dip in form, which led to rather flat home displays against Winsford and Stone and a 4-0 FA Vase reverse at Holbrook Sports, a game twice delayed by the early onset of winter and hastily re-arranged on a cold, unforgiving Wednesday evening far from home in December. Town’s inconsistent league form resumed in January but a mid-table position with nine wins, two draws and eleven defeats from 22 starts is still a fair platform from which to launch a push for a top eight finish in the last three months of the season. Added to that – at the time of writing, at least – the opportunity to make further progress in the Vodkat League Cup and the Liverpool Senior Cup and there is much to play for. . . . A Review of the Season Two significant new arrivals in the pre-season were centre forward Liam Pearson pictured left from Ford Motors (20 goals so far) and goalkeeper Dale Newbrook, signed after a strong performance for West Didsbury and Chorlton against Town in a July friendly. Several other new arrivals, including Paul Cliff, Liam Ryder and Dave Garnell, further strengthened the squad, as did wingman Daley Woods, who scored 9 goals in 19 games before moving on and has now rejoined. On the debit side, Rob Hanley has not reappeared this season, Marc Stephens left for Cammell Laird and the Mitchell brothers have also departed. Younger players like Mike Fargher, Luke Faulkner and Mike Kavanagh have made significant progress and the squad as a whole has a stronger feel. Around The Grounds Pavilion’s Sports Complex - Runcorn Town When Town’s scheduled match at Stone Dominoes was called off at the 11th hour. We pilled back into the car and quickly agreed to take in the Runcorn Town Vs Dunston UTS FA Vase Tie as the Vodkat League new boys were the final representative from our league in the national competition. The first thing that strikes you on the way to the stadium is the former ICI works now under the umbrella of Ineos as you meander your way towards the sports complex. The complex is quite quirky with a large car park next to a large public house/club and on your way to the entrance to Runcorn Town’s ground you pass other ground on which a game was taking place, General Chemicals (who St Helens Town beat on their way to winning the FA Vase in 1987) used to play on this pitch and is now home to Runcorn Albion who were playing when we visited. Once entering Runcorn Town’s ground through the pay box the ground is above you at eye level with the pitch running goal to goal away from you. We made around to the right hand side of the pitch there is a small covered stand with a handful of what I would describe as a school seats in it concreted into the ground. After this is the main building on the site which houses the dressing rooms and tea bar. After this building there is another small covered stand with some similar seating in it. Behind the goal at the entrance end of the ground is uncovered hard standing with a rail at the back to prevent spectators falling off the pitched back. Advancing around to the opposite side of the ground there is a newer stand which runs for approximately half the length of the touchline. This stand contains the majority of the seating in the ground with the front of the stand housing this with the most ingenious use of a ladder this being the basis of the seating with the gaps between the rungs being filled with wood and marked out as seats. Behind this is a bar running horizontal which is for utilising as a standing area. The large area behind the far goal is currently inaccessible thus making the ground effectively three sided at present. Saint’s Alive . . . A young cowboy in the Wild West has dreams of becoming the best gunslinger around. Passing through Deadwood one afternoon, he decides to call in at the saloon for a drink and settles himself down at a table with a bottle of whisky. Casting his eye around the saloon, he sees there is a man dressed in black playing a piano in the corner, and also recognises an old man with the reputation of being the greatest gunfighter of his day, sitting alone at another table. The youngster picks up his whisky, strolls over to the old timer, and offers him a drink. With his hospitality accepted, he engages the old man in conversation and soon confesses his dream of becoming the best gunfighter of all time. The old man looks him up and down for a few moments. “Well, if you’re so determined, I have one or two suggestions that are sure to help,” he offers. “Please tell me,” begs the youngster, excitedly. “For a start, tie the bottom of your holster lower down on your leg,” says the old man. “Will that make me a better gunfighter?” enquires the youngster. “Definitely,” replies the old man. The youngster unties and adjusts his holster as instructed, then draws his gun and shoots the bow tie off the piano player. “Wow, that really made a difference,” he beams. “Do you have any more suggestions?” he asks. “Yeah,” replies the old man. “If you cut a notch in the top of your holster where the hammer rests, it will prevent any risk of snagging and your gun will come out smoother,” he explains. “And will that make me an even better gunfighter?” demands the youngster. “It sure will,” replies the old man. The youngster takes a knife and cuts a notch in the top of his holster, replaces his gun, draws it again, and shoots the cufflink off the piano player’s sleeve. “Wow, this is really helping me a lot,” he says. “Is there anything else you can share with me?” he continues. “Just one more thing,” replies the old man, sagely. “Get that can of axle grease from over there in the corner and rub it all over your gun.” Without hesitation, the youngster obeys the instruction and starts to cover the barrel of his gun in axle grease. “No, the whole gun,” instructs the old man. “Barrel, butt, trigger - everything. And, when you’ve done that, empty all the bullets out and leave them on the table for safety. Make sure that every chamber is empty. The youngster looks puzzled. “How can that possibly help me in a gunfight?” he asks. “It won’t,” replies the old man. “But it won’t hurt as much.” The youngster looks horrified. “What won’t hurt as much?” he asks, his voice trembling. “Well, replies the old man, a smile spreading over his face. “When Wyatt Earp finishes playing the piano, he’s going to shove that gun up your arse!” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
