Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League contest against our friends from Squires Gate. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. We were last here a week ago to take on a young but skilful Everton side in the Liverpool Senior Cup and despite an early set back when we conceded a goal we bounced back to level when Andy Olsen netted his sixth goal for the club, taking him into pole position in the leading scorers stakes. We then conceded virtually straight away and could not net to take the game to extra time. Saturday saw us take a one goal lead into the interval against Maine Road, Danny Hand netting after a good first half performance but two second half goals saw us fall to a disappointing defeat. It may be a bit early in the season for a relegation six pointer but in my view this evening’s contest against Squires Gate is one and if Town were to fail to get a return from this game then our already precarious predicament would become a lot worse. Whilst we were falling to a 2-1 reverse on Saturday at another one of the clubs around us at the foot of the table Maine Road two of the four clubs below us in the table namely AFC Liverpool and Stone Dominoes were securing maximum returns from their league contests and closing the gap on us.

All of the teams below us have games in hand and we need to start turning some of our dominant spells into more goals and put some teams to bed when we get the chance or we are going to get dragged nearer and nearer to the two relegation places at the bottom of the table. Squires Gate come into this contest after an extra time FA Vase success against Winsford United on Saturday, securing a 3-1 victory in the 30 extra minutes and will be looking to ease their position at the foot of the table, incidentally should Gate secure victory over Town this evening they would leap-frog over us into 18th position. Jim and the lads will know they need to perform tonight to secure a very much needed victory as we look to turn our form around. Let’s get behind Town this evening and hopefully cheer them onto a good result. Enjoy the game . . .

In Town Today . . . The club was originally formed as Squires Gate British Legion F.C. in 1948 and played in the Blackpool & District Amateur League. In Coronation year, 1953 the club changed its name to Squires Gate F.C. and won its first honour in the leagues Rawling Sheild. In the years that followed, the ‘Gate’ added to their silverware by securing the Division One title twice in 1956/56 and 1957/58 and also the Blackwell Cup in 1958/59 and 1959/60. The club joined the Flyde District League for one season only in 1960/61, winning the Flyde Cup and reaching the final of the Bannister Cup. In 1961 they moved up to the West Lancashire League where they played for 30 years. They were promoted from The West Lancashire League Division 2 as the Champions in 1981, but apart from that title win the Division 1 Richardson Cup win in 1986/87 was the clubs only major honour of that period. The club won the Division Two title again in 1987/88 and gained promotion back to the Leagues top flight. Squires Gate’s home ground School Lane adjoins former North West Counties outfit Blackpool Wren Rovers home Bruce Park. The two grounds were fashioned out of a corporate waste tip in the late 1950’s. Leased to the clubs in 1961, originally the clubs played on two adjacent pitches with nothing more than a rope separating them. Over the years the two grounds were segregated and developed into two North West Counties League standard grounds. The club have made steady progress since being elected to they North West Counties League Division Two for the 1991/92 season. The club ended that first season in 14th place after struggling to adapt to the step up in standard. The club won the NWCFL Fair Play award for the 1993/94 season and were losing finalists in the Division Two Trophy in 1997/98. Gate struggled at the wrong end of the second division for some years before a they just missed out on promotion with a third placed finish in the 1998-99 season. The club now boasts a licensed clubhouse and three seated stands. The millennium was celebrated with the erection of floodlights and the completion of the largest stand. They won the Division Two Trophy in 2001/2 beating Bacup Borough in an exciting final and won promotion to the First Division the season after finishing 3rd in the table and accepting the promotion place left vacant by Stand Athletic who withdrew from the league. Their first season in the top flight saw them finish in a very respectable12th position. 2005/6 saw the club finish in 14th position but it was their FA Vase exploits that the Gate fans will remind you of as they advanced from the 1st qualifying round al the way to the Quarter Finals where they went down 2-0 to Hillingdon Borough who were eventual beaten finalists. 2006/7 saw Gate have a mixed for start and manager Stuart Parker was sacked after an 8-0 defeat by FC United and former manager Jed Starkey has returned to take up the reigns. The club finished the season in 18th position. Andy Clarkson took up the reigns for the start of 2007/8 season and Gate reaping the rewards of his stewardship as they finished in 6th position their highest ever league position in his first term in charge of the club. In recent years, Gate's real achievements have been in developing the Club itself. Some of the former players who moved to School Road in 1960 are still around, working in various capacities, most notably Brian Addison, who has progressed from player to Linesman, to Secretary, to Chairman, and eventually to the most important job of all: groundsman. Once the pitch had been relaid some ten years ago, Brian has gradually turned the pitch into one of the best in the League, and with the opening of the new changing rooms a couple of years later (named after one of the Club's great stalwarts, Wilf Carr,) the ground has become unrecognisable since those early days. The complete refurbishment of the Clubhouse in 2006, with air-conditioning added the following year, and now the upgrading of the floodlights, means that Squires Gate can be rightly proud of what they have created since those far-off days playing on "the tip". . . . Squires Gate FC 2008/9 saw the coast outfit finish in a very respectable 10th position but Clarkson left the club at the end of the season to take up a position in the AFC Fylde coaching staff. Gate appointed Russ McKenna to the hot-seat with Mark Moretti as his assistant for the 2009/10 season. The new duo did a good job of consolidating the clubs position within the Premier Division as they steered the club to a 13th placed finish. Last term has seen the club build on that finish and were one of the surprise packages in the Premier Division finishing in 9th. Squires Gate Snippets Squires Gate have appointed Nigel Taylor as the club’s new assistant to player-manager Russ McKenna. Nigel (pictured below), who is currently the club captain, takes over from previous player-assistant manager Dave McCann, who left the club recently, and as Russ explained, Nigel was the obvious candidate for the job. “Dave decided to call it a day, which was a blow as he had been playing well, so his expertise on and off the pitch will be missed. He has done a great job for the club, and I would have probably struggled without him, especially in my first season. He has a lot of good background knowledge and I probably wouldn’t be in the job now if it wasn’t for him, and I wish him all the best in whatever he does next. “So now Nigel has come in now to help me out. I’ve known Nigel a long time, I’ve spent probably the last eight or nine years with him at different clubs, and it has turned out that I’ve either seemed to follow him or he’s followed me. He has a good knowledge of the game, and although he’s injured at the moment and just getting back to fitness, he’ll be a good influence on and off the field”.
Once again, Russ has opted to go with a playing assistant, but he sees that as a positive move and one he is comfortable with. “Nigel is 30 now and has been around a while, and with him and Dave before him, it’s been all about having people I know and can trust and can help me out, and bring a good spirit to the place. We’ve also had Kenny Mayers with us for a while, who has a lot of experience at this level and who has helped us out. They are not negative people and that’s what you need around a football club, especially when things are not going well. When I was looking for someone as my number two, Nigel was my first choice because he is so positive and leads by example. When he is playing, the lads around him respond to him. He has a good relationship with the younger lads especially, and can judge when they need encouragement and an arm round them, rather than someone having a go at them. We need his positive attitude and man management skills, and while I believe those are my strengths too, as the manager you have to keep a distance between yourself and the players. But the players respond to Nigel, when he speaks in the dressing room, they all listen to him, and that is exactly what we need. It’s great for us that he has come in alongside me”. A Word from the Manager . . . Hello and welcome to Edge Green Street for tonight’s North West Counties Football League Premier Division game against our friends and rivals from Blackpool, Squires Gate Football Club. Let's hope everyone connected to their club as had a safe journey getting here and enjoy a entertaining game of football, but of course leave empty handed as far as points goes. How things can change in a week is summed up with the feelings I am sure everyone had leaving Maine Road’s ground on Saturday. The points were there for the taking and we just did not perform in the second half. We have some really good players at this football club, but they need to start producing on the pitch. There's been too many games lately were we have taking the plaudits but no points and it cannot go on much longer. We need to take on board our league position and work together to improve it. Starting tonight against a team that have beaten us twice at their place already this season. We looked tired in the second half on Saturday and I feel that forced us to sit deeper and deeper as the game went on. Considering our efforts last Tuesday against Everton and the previous Saturday against Runcorn Town, its not really surprising but we need that kind of effort in every game to give us any chance of picking up some much needed points, starting with tonight’s game. Finally, just a word on Chris Saxon who's joined us as Physio, how I wish we could have had him at the start of the season, he's a top lad and a great physio who the players and staff have a great deal of time for. A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division against our friends and rivals from Squires Gate FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have enjoyed a good journey and are treated to an entertaining encounter. Three 2-1 defeats in the past week or so have hit the club hard and our current league position is a concern for everyone involved. Ten days ago the lads gave a great account of themselves against the league leaders Runcorn Town and will have felt hard done by in not taking something from the game. Last Tuesday the visit of Everton proved disappointing on a number of fronts - of course we expected a tough encounter and that’s what entailed against a young Everton outfit who oozed class. However, the lads battled hard after a fraught opening twenty minutes which had seen our visitors go a goal ahead before Andy Olsen netted with a quality header. Parity was restored but only for a matter of seconds as a quick reply from the Blues put them 1-2 up and they eventually secured progress to the semi-finals. The remainder of the game saw Town play well and go close to an equaliser but it was not to be! Congratulations to Ian Frazer who was the Match Sponsor Kestrel Industrial Supplies Man of the Match and Colin Quirk who received the accolade from our opposition. The major disappointment from Everton’s visit was the crowd of under 200 and whilst I appreciate that our exile in Ashton (in the nicest sense) and England v Sweden on terrestrial television will have be a huge factor I am not sure what else the club could have done to have improved matters - there were plenty of posters out and about in St Helens and Ashton and fans, committee and players did their best via Facebook, Twitter, etc. For those who did attend they were treated to a good game, played in the right spirit and I am sure we will see one or two of the opposition as regulars at Goodison Park in the future. Saturday’s trip to Maine Road was the ultimate in frustration - a goal up at half time and looking good, especially in the opening 30 minutes. But a second half performance which must rank amongst the worst of the campaign with individual errors costing goals, failure to take gilt edge chances and a general lack of bite all over the park. I’m sure we are all hoping that Jimmy and the lads can bounce back as tonight is a real ‘six-pointer’. Saturday’s result was also put into perspective as both Stone and AFC Liverpool picked up wins to narrow the gap and we are now firmly in a relegation battle as Maine Road’s win gave them a seven point comfort zone over us. Captains, match officials and sponsors at last week’s Town v Everton Liverpool Senior Cup game Congratulations to tonight’s visitors Squires Gate who made it to the 3rd round of the FA Vase with a 3-1 extra time win over Winsford United at School Road - substitute Chris Bennett hitting an 11 minute hat-trick either side of the extra time interval. Well done to Glossop NE, Norton United and Runcorn Town who also went through. Tonight will be the third meeting between our clubs so far this season and Gate currently hold the upper hand having hammered us 6-1 in the League on a windswept night back in mid-September and ten days later 1-0 in the FA Vase. Hopefully, the lads will be able to make home advantage count on this occasion - but Russ McKenna’s men will be looking for maximum points which will see them leapfrog above Town. While we still await news on our return to St Helens, the new stadium name was announced in the past week
and Langtree Park (part of a sponsorship deal with the developers) will be our new home. Finally, give the lads your vocal encouragement and please join us in the clubhouse for the usual postmatch debate and St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ presentations. Action from Town’s 2-1 defeat at Maine Road last Saturday
St Helens Town managed to pluck defeat from the jaws of victory with an awful second half performance at Maine Road this afternoon sinking them deeper into the relegation mire. The game started off well for the visitors as some early pressure saw Colin Quirk try his luck from the edge of the area but as he was closed down by a defender his effort deflected off the Road man and made the save easier for the home stopper. At the other end Maine Road should have taken the lead on 12 minutes when Robert Brocklehurst latched onto a poor free kick deep in the Town half and found Paul Arrowsmith on the left he centred towards Thomas Bentham but he shot at Richard Cowderoy in the Town goal when it seemed easier to score. The visitors made the hosts pay for this wastefulness in front of goal as they took the lead on 16 minutes an initial attack down the right saw Mike Kavanagh link with Quirk with the latter sending a cross to the far post which Ian Smith got a touch on at the far post and Greg Hall had to tip over the bar from the corner the ball was cleared back to taker Quirk who beat a defender before

. . . Match Report and Photos sending the ball back into the danger area where Daniel Hand somehow dug the ball out up and over Hall into the back of the net. Town had plenty of possession for the remainder of the half but their best chance to add to their advantage did not come until the closing stages of the half. The visitors again had success down the right with Quirk feeding Kavanagh who sent a dangerous ball into the box which Andy Olsen met at the far post and his header beat the keeper but cannoned off the face of the crossbar and behind. For the good first half the visitors had had the second period saw them pinned back by Maine Road as the hosts dominated the first twenty minutes of the half. Just after the hour market was the hosts turn to trouble the crossbar as Bentham caught Che Morgan in possession and advanced before firing an effort which bounced down into the area off the bar and the loose ball was cleared. The pressure told for Maine Road as they deservedly levelled on 70 minutes. Town lost possession too easily in the opposition half and the ball was sent out wide to the right from the centre of the park where Matthew Huntley collected it and cut inside before unleashing an unstoppable effort past Cowderoy into the roof of the net. The next chance fell to the hosts as a counter attack saw Bentham find Connor Hughes on the left of the area and his effort went just over the bar. Town should have regained the lead on 83 minutes when Quirk robbed a defender on the edge of the Road box and advanced into the area before releasing substitute Artjoms Butorins who had just the keeper to beat but took a touch and was quickly closed down by a recovering defender who blocked his resultant shot behind for a corner which came to nothing. The killer blow came in the 89th minute when a surging run from Andrew Kilheeney went unchecked and he was allowed to cut the ball back from the byline to the far post where Brocklehurst was on hand to turn the ball home and secure all three points for the hosts. Town v Everton Match Report . . . Tuesday 15th November 2011 Liverpool Senior Cup, Quarter Final St Helens Town 1-2 Everton St Helens Town exited this years Liverpool Senior Cup but did not go down without a fight against a skilful young Everton outfit at Edge Green Street this evening. The game got off to the worst possible start for the hosts as they fell behind in the 7th minute. Anton Forrester was allowed too much time and space to turn and get his shot off on the edge of the Town area and he made no mistake finding the net via the inside of the right hand upright. The visitors looked in complete control and dominated possession for the remainder of the opening quarter of the contest without unduly threatening the home goal, the closest the blues came to doubling their lead came when Chris Long’s lofted effort when wide of the left hand upright. It was then somewhat against the run of play that Town levelled on 26 minutes with a well worked goal. Michael Kavanagh received the ball on the right wing and sent a pinpoint cross towards Andy Olsen centrally and he made no mistake to head the ball past Adam Davies in the Everton goal. The joy was to be short lived for the hosts as parity was to last for less than 60 seconds as Adam Thomas sent a low cross into the box from the left and Ryan Higgins was able to apply a deft touch at the front post to steer the ball home and restore the toffee’s lead. Again the visitors looked comfortable in possession and they almost added to their lead shortly before the interval when Town were unable to stop a surging run from Forrester and this time the post saved the hosts as his effort struck the base of the left upright and was smuggled to safety. The hosts started the second period better than they has the first and Ian Roby’s effort from the edge of the area would have tested Davies in the Everton gool had it not been deflected over the bar by a defender. At the other just past the hour mark the visitors broke down the right with their goalscorers linking before Higgins sent the ball towards Long on the far post be drew and rounded Richard Cowderoy in the Town goal and shot but Town skipper Michael Burns had covered well and came to the rescue of his team clearing the ball off the line. Cowderoy was then drawn into more action when he had to be alert to thwart Long in a one on one situation before Forrester went on a powerful run through the heart of the Town midfield before being muscled off the ball by the Town centre backs. With time running out the hosts pushed forward attempting to level and push the game into extra time. With a quarter of an hour remaining Town sent a free kick into the box which was half cleared to David Berry and his first time effort was held by Davies in the Everton goal. The next threat for Town came on 83 minutes when Kavanagh beat Ibou Touray on the right by nutmegging him before firing a powerful ball into the box which evaded all and went out harmlessly for a throw on the opposite flank. Further pressure saw Colin Quirk’s (pictured receiving his Man of the Match award) right wing corner was cleared back to him on the right wing and he sent the ball back into the box where it broke to Berry on the far post but he could only direct his header at the keeper. The final chance of Colin Quirk the contest fell to substitute Lee Owens not long after his Opposition’s introduction, he was on the end of Quirk’s right wing cross but his Man of the header went agonisingly wide of the right hand post and Town’s Match v Everton hopes were dashed with Everton advancing into the semi finals. Glyn Jones’ Mid-term Review . . . It hardly seems like three and a half months have passed since the NWC League Season kicked off on 6th August, but in that time, St. Helens Town have completed over half of their league programme. 22 games played and only 20 (including today’s) to go! We started off on a cautionary note. A new management team in place, with a huge amount of changes on the field and although the pre-season programme went quite well overall, with some encouraging performances, a tough start to the league programme was anticipated, with promotion favourites Ramsbottom coming to Edge Green Street in the opening game. How wrong we were! Rammy were despatched 3-2 and after four games, Town sat on top of the Premier Division with three wins and a draw. After that, however, there followed a massive slide, which brought two draws and no wins in the next 12 games and disappointing exits from both the FA competitions, each at the first attempt, with no prize money to come. Following the Ramsbottom success, there was a frustrating 0-0 draw at Atherton LR, but victories at Colne and at home to new boys AFC Liverpool set Town up nicely for the return visit of LR in the FA Cup but after a promising start, the visitors scored against the run of play and on a Mike Kavanagh in action wet, slippery pitch, Town could not get back into the game which was against Rammy eventually lost 0-2. The FA Cup exit clearly knocked the team’s confidence and a midweek defeat at Stone Dominoes was followed by a 05 hammering at the hands of a rampant Flixton side and further home defeats to Bootle and Winsford followed. Our first meeting with Runcorn Town produced an entertaining game in very poor conditions and, having recovered from a 2-0 deficit, the scores were level at 2-2 with St. Helens in the ascendancy but two late goals against the run of play gave the promoted side a 4-2 win. A 1-1 draw with Padiham halted the slide to some extent, but Town had no answer to a fluent Squires Gate on a very windy night in Blackpool, going down 6-1. September continued in a frustrating vein, with a narrow 1-0 loss in the return at Flixton – a match which could have gone either way – and it was a similar outcome in the FA Vase game at Squires Gate where a very late close-range miss by Andrew Flood would have taken the game into extra time. In between, Town did make progress in the Liverpool Senior Cup, with a 4-2 win over landlords Ashton Town, an entertaining game which was settled with a hat-trick from newcomer Andy Olsen (pictured left against Glossop North End) October began as September had ended, with another 1-0 loss, this time at Congleton, who had ex-Town goalkeeper Joe Paladino in charge. The return game with Stone Dominoes ended level at 1-1, before a resurgent Glossop returned home with the points in a 5-2 hammering. Confidence was at a low ebb at Barnoldswick in the next game, Town slumping to a 4-0 defeat, but there then followed a revival and a run of three games which NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

. . . St Helens Town 2011-12 saw St. Helens remain unbeaten, firstly accounting for AFC Blackpool 3-2 (Carl Addison pictured right in action against the seasiders), despite finishing with only nine men, then eliminating Silsden from the NWC League Cup and rounding off with a 2-2 draw at AFC Liverpool, the home team equalising deep into stoppage time. The unbeaten run came to an end with a 3-2 loss to Alsager. Further defeats at Bootle, at home to Runcorn Town and at Maine Road followed, as well as a narrow Liverpool Senior Cup defeat at home to an excellent Everton Reserves side and after 22 games, Town sit in some trouble near the foot of the Premier Division table with only four wins and four draws. The reasons for our current predicament are wide-ranging and plain to see. Manager Jimmy McBride has never been able to field the same team twice, with injuries and suspensions, plus non-availability of players due to a variety of other commitments, contributing to a lack of consistency and, after the opening four games, disappointment and loss of confidence. Of the 14 defeats, 7 have been by the odd goal, when a little more confidence and luck might well have produced draws to lift us up the table. Success breeds success and if we can begin to put together an unbeaten run, games are there to be won. Our leading goal-scorers in league matches are Carl Addison 5, Leon Williams (now at Runcorn Town) 4, Andy Ledger and Iain Dyson 3 each, Michael Burns and Andy Olsen with two goals each. In addition, Olsen scored 4 and Dyson 1 in the Liverpool Senior Cup and Tom Butorins has one in the League Cup to go with one in the league. Since the start of the season, several new players have arrived from local football, Olsen has joined from Atherton LR, Butorins from Congleton and Colin Quirk (pictured right v Runcorn Town) has returned home from Australia. A battle against relegation is therefore the main concern for the remainder of the season and it will take a lot of character to preserve Town’s proud record as the only club to have played every season in the top flight of the NWC League. Of the teams currently below ourselves in the league table (all of whom have several games in hand), Town have only yet to face Squires Gate here tonight and Atherton LR also at home and there are crucial games to come against teams just above us including home and away matches with Ashton Athletic, Bacup Borough, Runcorn Linnets and Silsden, together with the home return with Maine Road. Results in these eleven games will be pivotal in the battle to retain our cherished status, particularly now that AFC Liverpool and Stone Dominoes have begun to put together a run of decent results. NWCF League News . . . Abbey Hey FC are pleased to announce that Dents-B-Gone have joined the club as one of their Website/Team sponsors. Dents-B-Gone are a car body repair company who specialise in 'Paintless Car Dent Removal', a technique used for reforming dented car body panels to their original shape. If the paintwork is undamaged, then the damaged car body panel will be returned to its original condition prior to the damage. Dents-B-Gone Managing Director Gary Hardy said: "I have watched Abbey Hey home and away over the past few years, and closely followed the progress that the club has made during that time, both on and off the pitch. When an appeal went out on the website to attract new sponsors to the club, I thought it would provide the ideal opportunity for me to promote my company, but within a manageable budget. It also helps that the team play in a league based around the area where we want to attract new customers". Abbey manager Barrie Walker added: "When I came to the club, one of my aims was to increase the profile of the club in and around the area, and get the local community involved with what we are trying to do here at Abbey Hey. Dents-B-Gone are proof that we are moving forwards, and hopefully this will be the first of many new sponsors to come on board. The annual charity game between Ashton Athletic and Wigan Athletic Veterans will take place on Friday 25th November at Brocstedes Park, kick off 7.30pm. This year, the game will raising funds in aid of the Emma Hoolin appeal. Emma is a four year old girl who in February 2011 was diagnosed with High Risk Neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer that mainly affects children under five years old. Emma has been undergoing aggressive treatment at Manchester Royal Children’s Hospital since February 2011, and to have the best chance of survival Emma needs to have treatment in the U.S.A, the cost of which is in excess of £210,000. Former Wigan Athletic players will provide the opposition for the Ashton Athletic veterans,and will see the likes of Stuart Barlow, David Glenn, Neil Rimmer and Kevin Langley pull on the Latics shirt once again, in order to do their bit for a good cause. All the club's facilities will be open on the night and everyone is welcome to come down to Ashton Athletic, for what is hoped will be a successful and charitable evening. Admission on the night is £3 for Adults and £1 for children. League Landmarks (week ending 19th November 2011) Robert Hardwick's equaliser for Runcorn Linnets in their 1-1 win draw at home to Stone Dominoes on Tuesday evening was Linnets' 200th home League goal. The second of Liam Nethercote's double for AFC Liverpool, their second goal in the 7-0 win over Winsford United on Wednesday night, was the Reds' 100th home League goal.
