Talk of the Town Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road, for this Vodkat League Premier Division contest against Squires Gate. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Squires Gate to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this evening. Town bounced back from Tuesday’s disappointing loss at Congleton by securing a resounding 4-0 victory here at Knowsley Road against a Nelson outfit who came into the game having won their previous four matches. At times we found so much space in the middle of the park and down the flanks that it was easy to understand how the visitors had come into the game having conceded 27 goals in 15 matches. Some outstanding individual performances contributed to what in reality was quite a comfortable victory and to be honest the margin could and maybe should have been more than four goals at the end of 90 minutes. This evening we play host to a Squires Gate team who have struggled of late, having lost their last two matches against New Mills and Silsden both at home and going down 2-1 in both contests. The boys from Blackpool will be looking to get back to winning ways, as earlier in the season they had recorded an 8-1 victory over Colne and a 6-0 win against Abbey Hey. Since these results they have also had a couple of heavy defeats at the hands on Bacup Borough (6-1) and Runcorn Linnets (5-1).

Gary and the lads will be looking to secure all three points this evening to cement fourth position in the league table going into Saturday’s massive match away at Newcastle Town, who going into this evenings round of games hold a 100% record having recorded 13 victories. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat Premier Division fixture. We welcome the players, officials and supporters of Squires Gate Football Club as well as our home support. Saturday saw Town put on a fine show against a Nelson side who had themselves been on a good run. Two goals in either half from Iain Dyson (2), plus a goal each from Graeme Mitchell and Phil Mitchell put our visitors to the sword and to be fair the score line should have been significantly greater. There were lots of great individual performances with a special mention going to Marc Stevens (pictured left below with his MoM award v Formby) and Peter Birch along with man of the match Graeme Mitchell (pictured left top). Across town the reserves were continuing their recent good form with a 2-0 victory over Unity FC in the John Gregson Memorial Cup - goals from Andy Gillespie and Adam Gilchrist. Tonight’s visitors were narrowly defeated at home on Saturday when title contenders New Mills ran out 1-2 winners in what appeared to be a very close encounter. Gary and the lads will know that another good performance will be required if we are to take all three points and hopefully tonight’s performance will be good preparation for Saturday’s trip to unbeaten (currently 100% record) Newcastle Town. In Town Today . . . The club was originally formed as Squires Gate British Legion F.C. in 1948 and played in the Blackpool & District Amateur League. In Coronation year, 1953 the club changed its name to Squires Gate F.C. and won its first honour in the leagues Rawling Sheild. In the years that followed, the ‘Gate’ added to their silverware by securing the Division One title twice in 1956/56 and 1957/58 and also the Blackwell Cup in 1958/59 and 1959/60. The club joined the Flyde District League for one season only in 1960/61, winning the Flyde Cup and reaching the final of the Bannister Cup. In 1961 they moved up to the West Lancashire League where they played for 30 years. They were promoted from The West Lancashire League Division 2 as the Champions in 1981, but apart from that title win the Division 1 Richardson Cup win in 1986/87 was the clubs only major honour of that period. The club won the Division Two title again in 1987/88 and gained promotion back to the Leagues top flight. Squires Gate’s home ground School Lane adjoins former North West Counties outfit Blackpool Wren Rovers home Bruce Park. The two grounds were fashioned out of a corporate waste tip in the late 1950’s. Leased to the clubs in 1961, originally the clubs played on two adjacent pitches with nothing more than a rope separating them. Over the years the two grounds were segregated and developed into two North West Counties League standard grounds. The club have made steady progress since being elected to they North West Counties League Division Two for the 1991/92 season. The club ended that first season in 14th place after struggling to adapt to the step up in standard. The club won the NWCFL Fair Play award for the 1993/94 season and were losing finalists in the Division Two Trophy in 1997/98. Gate struggled at the wrong end of the second division for some years before a they just missed out on promotion with a third placed finish in the

In Town Today . . . 1998-99 season. The club now boasts a licensed clubhouse and three seated stands. The millennium was celebrated with the erection of floodlights and the completion of the largest stand. They won the Division Two Trophy in 2001/2 beating Bacup Borough in an exciting final and won promotion to the First Division the season after finishing 3rd in the table and accepting the promotion place left vacant by Stand Athletic who withdrew from the league. Their first season in the top flight saw them finish 12th which is their highest league finish to date. 2005/6 saw the club finish in 14th position but it was their FA Vase exploits that the Gate fans will remind you of as they advanced from the 1st qualifying round al the way to the Quarter Finals where they went down 2-0 to Hillingdon Borough who were eventual beaten finalists. 2006/7 saw Gate have a mixed for start and manager Stuart Parker was sacked after an 8-0 defeat by FC United and former manager Jed Starkey has returned to take up the reigns. The club finished the season in 18th position. Andy Clarkson took up the reigns for the start of 2007/8 season and Gate reaping the rewards of his stewardship as they finished in 6th position their highest ever league position in his first term in charge of the club. The following term saw the coast outfit finish in a very respectable 10th position but Clarkson left the club at the end of the season to take up a position in the AFC Fylde coaching staff. Gate appointed Russ McKenna to the hot-seat with Mark Moretti as his number 2. Vodkat League News Vodkat League Landmarks Tuesday 6th October 2009 New Mills 7-1 win at Abbey Hey was notable for two reasons. The 7th goal scored by Cayne Hanley was the Millers' 400th League goal, and it also sealed their 50th away League win. St Helens Town's 2-0 win at Flixton earned Saints their 1500th League point. Saturday 10th October 2009 Maine Road's sixth goal, scored by Greg Hall in the 86th minute, in the 7-0 win over Abbey Hey was Road's 1500th League goal. Ramsbottom United's 6-3 win at Bootle was their 100th away League win. Rams Programme Editor Richard Isaacs has been in touch to confirm that this is only the second time during the years the club has played in the NWCFL that they have scored six away from home - the only other time was, ironically, against Flixton, their next opponents on Wednesday night. On 1st February 2003, the Rams won 7-0 at Valley Road with Russ Brierley scoring four of the goals. Newcastle Town have now equalled the record for the best ever start to a season in the NWCFL, with their 6-0 win over Ashton Athletic being their 12th successive league victory. Originally we thought that the previous best was in the League's inaugural 1982/83 season when Radcliffe Borough went 11 League games before dropping a point. However, Colm Lambert has been in touch to point out that in season 2005/06 Skelmersdale United opened with 12 straight wins before being held 2-2 at Salford City. The following season, FC United equalled Dental Surgery that feat before losing 2-1 - again away to Junction Lane Dental Surgery is now Salford City. Around The Grounds Altcar Road - Formby Formby’s home ground of Altcar Road has seen some renovations and changes in this current season, although sadly the place is still a long way away from being a decent facility. The most striking change that has been made is the inclusion of nets that surround the ground to prevent wayward shots and last ditch clearances disappearing into the nearby fields, but this gives a prison like feeling to the place and is an extraordinarily bizarre feature for a football ground. More concerning for us taller gentlemen, a corner of the ground had these nets low enough to catch your head on and trailing across the walkway, mind you don’t hang yourself! The see-through fencing has now been covered with mounds of earth dug up from the front of the ground where a car park is now situated, presumably this is to comply with ground grading requirements but once again it’s not aesthetically pleasing. There is now a canteen and a bar present though, but in typical Formby form the canteen is a burger van and the bar is a portakabin. It’s a facility that I’m glad I don’t have to go to too often and might go some distance to explain the low figures of support Formby receive, for a new ground it’s not a shiny example of winning engineering and design and I think that’s probably the kindest thing I can say about it. Town History Formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

Town History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included Eric Moore (Everton), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keepers jersey. Kevin Woods; Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones; Commanding Centre Half who now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke; Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias; Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Paul Monteith; Now in his second season at the club, “Monty� was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Iain Dyson; Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the clubs top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell; Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell; Brother of Graeme followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Brian Hatton; The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause

He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield. Marc Stephens; Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Ian Frazer; Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Rob Hanley; Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Mark Evans; Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen “Ben” Kay; Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Faragher; Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Dougie Pitts; Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere. Nick McLoughlin; Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Peter Birch; Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possess good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces.

Vodkat League News AFC LIVERPOOL MOURN LOSS OF MICHELLE Officials and supporters of AFC Liverpool have been mourning the sad death of Michelle Jones, one of the club’s founder members. Michelle, who would have celebrated her 28th birthday this week, died tragically in a road accident in Liverpool City Centre, whilst on her way home from work. Along with her partner Simon Jones, she was a founder member of AFC Liverpool, and was ever present at the club’s games, both home and away. Many who have attended AFC games will have read her WAGS column, which was a regular feature in the match programme. In a special message from club chairman Chris Stirrup, he paid tribute by saying: “Michelle was a lovely girl, and will be greatly missed by many at the club” A minute’s silence was held at the beginning of the club’s game at Eccleshall in memory of Michelle, and afterwards the players and management dedicated the 3-2 victory to her. AN EVENING OF SOUL AT PADIHAM Padiham Football Club are holding an "Evening of Soul" at their Arbories Memorial Sports Ground on Saturday 24th October. The event is being staged to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the opening of their new Clubhouse and changing facilities, which was completed in October 1999. An invitation is going out to all supporters of the Storks and their friends to come along and join in the night’s celebrations, as well as listening to classic soul records from the 60s, 70s and 80s. The Evening of Soul starts at 8.00 pm. after the home fixture with Ashton Athletic, and as well as a night of entertainment it will also double up as a fund raiser for Padiham FC, to help with the extra costs the Storks have inherited following their promotion at the end of last season.

Fan’s Eye View Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road for this evenings Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division match against Squires Gate. May the travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result. It’s something of a bizarre feeling to be at home for a 2nd game in succession, something that hasn’t happened yet this season. In fact when we were all last gathered here it was St Helens Town’s first Saturday home match of the season. I was someone who wasn’t optimistic of the match against Nelson turning out all that well with the form the Lancashire side had been demonstrating in the run up to this match, having won their previous four encounters. But Town were keen to bounce back from the disappointing defeat to Congleton Town and boy did they do that. Leading after only 6 minutes of the match, the players would never look back and go on to comprehensively defeat Nelson by a scoreline of 4-0 that could have been far more emphatic had other chances that were created been dispatched. Iain Dyson in particular will be keen to forget a particular effort that made Ronnie Rosenthal’s miss for Liverpool against Aston Villa in 1992 look tame. But three points are three points and with Newcastle Town’s amazing run to the start of the season continuing with a 1-0 away victory over Bootle last Saturday, Town moved up to 4th place in the league and cemented their position in the top 5 with a gap of 5 points having now opened up between Bootle in 5th and Nelson in 6th. Town will look to build on that position this evening as they welcome Squires Gate to Knowsley Road tonight. Our Blackpool based visitors currently find themselves in 16th position in the league, their last result being a 1-2 defeat to New Mills on Saturday. The last time the two sides met was at the back end of last season when Town were desperately fighting for their Premier League lives, but a 3-1 victory for Town on that occasion went a long way to aiding them in their survival against relegation. I especially remember the thunderous Brain Hatton free kick that gave Town a two goal cushion as a standout moment from the match in what was a good day out for the team. Town will obviously be looking to gain a similar result this evening to further continue this unexpectedly brilliant start to the season. Once again the support from you the fans has been excellent in recent matches and once again let’s see if we can cheer the lads on to another victory this evening. Match Report Saturday 17th October; Vodkat League Premier Division - St Helens Town 4-0 Nelson Town bounced back from Tuesday’s disappointing defeat with a comfortable victory over a Nelson outfit that had won their previous four matches. An early Nelson opening gave Town a fright as Luke Hargreaves cross from the left found Martin Payne unmarked on the right of the area but Graeme McCall did enough to thwart both his initial effort and the subsequent shot from the loose ball. The hosts then spurned a chance as a great passing move saw Rob Hanley link with Mark Evans who advanced down the left and crossed towards Graeme Mitchell who headed just wide of the target. Town were more clinical with the next chance moments later, Peter Birch found Phil Mitchell who beat his man and supplied the perfect ball for skipper Iain Dyson and he rounded the keeper before rolling the ball home to open the scoring. The remainder of the first period was all St Helens Town with chance after chance being created in the acres of space afforded the hosts by Nelson. Birch headed a Phil Mitchell cross wide before Evans had a shot blocked from edge of the area and from the resultant corner Phil Mitchell’s effort was headed off the line. Further attacks saw Graeme Mitchell’s drive pushed wide by Chris Thompson and the keeper had to be alert again on 36 minutes to push Hanley’s effort behind for a corner and to complete his triple salvo of denying Town a second he parried a Marc Stephens effort back into play but when Phil Mitchell attempted to convert the loose ball he was flagged offside. Just when the Town faithful though they were going to go in at the interval just one goal to the good Graeme Mitchell doubled the lead. Stephens who had arguably the best game of his Town career dispossessed a Nelson midfielder and played an excellent through ball into the run of the Town striker who made no mistake shooting home with the outside of his left foot. The first chance of the second stanza saw Nelson almost pull a goal back as a quickly taken free kick by Lance Ogunyode on the edge of the area went just the wrong side of the right hand upright. Town were not daunted by this minor aberration and were quickly threatening up the other end of the park as Hanley and Phil Mitchell linked and on the edge of the box the latter linked with Evans who fed Dyson but the shot was just wide of the angle of post and crossbar. McCall was then called into action at the other end of the park as Lance Ogynyode found space on the right of the Town box, it took an excellent save from the Town stopper to tip the powerful effort around the post as if he had parried it back into play it would have been a tap in for Sam Heap. Next to miss a guilt edged chance was Hanley who was found by Graeme Mitchell and his shot when just wide of the right hand post, before a minute later heading an effort goalwards which Thompson held. Nelson had a purple patch around the 70 minute mark which saw John Luker have a shot deflected wide by a brave block, Heap denied by an excellent piece of goalkeeping by McCall in a one on one situation and Heap heading wide of the post when it seemed easier to score. As is often the case in football their failure to convert the openings cost them dear and instead of being back in the game it was ended as a contest in the 74th minute. Graeme Mitchell advanced from midfield and supplied brother Phil who drew the keeper and after a couple of ricochets found himself with an open goal to send the ball home into. It was a good job Town were three goals to the good as they managed to create the miss of the season on 81 minutes, Chris Burke won the ball in midfield and Stephens found Hanley on the left of the box who had a shot when Town outnumbered Nelson the keeper got a touch and it broke to Dyson who only needed to hit the target to score but tried to rip a hole in the back of the net and hit the crossbar. Dyson was to make amends on 89 minutes when Graeme Mitchell collected a through ball beat his defender and got driven to the byline by the keeper he pulled the ball back towards the Town skipper and he made no mistake this time adding his second and rounding off the win for Town. Three of the players Paul Woolcott, Adam Farley and Freddie Potter left Marine in the summer of 2009. Lee Parle had suffered a severe injury in October 2008 and had not played for a period of 7 months before the Matlock game being investigated and has only returned to playing football at the start of the current season. This follows an investigation by the FA Compliance Unit into unusual betting patterns on the Matlock Town v Marine league game played on Saturday 4th April 2009 in which Farley and Potter played and the Marine v Witton Albion league game played on Friday 21st March 2008 in which none of the four players played. Marine Chairman Paul Leary said, “The officers of Marine Football Club have to date co-operated fully with the staff of the Football Association who have been conducting the investigation with the individuals concerned into the allegations made. I will continue, with the officers of Marine, to co-operate fully with the next stage of their disciplinary process and shall provide any information that will help them to conclude matters as soon as possible.” Paul Leary added, “Marine Football Club shall not issue any further statements until the matter is closed”

All Our Yesterdays St. Helens Town AFC – Hall of Fame: Bill Foulkes Bill Foulkes, one of our two Honorary Presidents - the other being Bert Trautmann – joined the club from Whiston Boys’ Club and played a number of games for Town during the 1949/50 season, under the captaincy of Harry McCann and alongside Billy Twist in the defence. He signed for Manchester United in March 1950 for the princely sum of £10. Born at Clock Face on 5th January 1932, William Anthony Foulkes began in junior football at Whiston. He was a right back of obvious talent, big and strong, due in no small part to his job as a miner at Lea Green Colliery. Sport was in his blood, as both his grandfather and father had played rugby for Saints. Indeed, his grandfather had captained Saints and became an England international and Bill proudly followed later in his footsteps, although in a different code. Although he signed professional at Old Trafford under Matt Busby in August 1951, Bill did not play in United’s Championship season, but made his debut against Liverpool on 13th December 1952. Remarkably, he continued to work full-time at Lea Green Colliery, catching the train from the nearby station to Manchester after the end of his shift to attend evening training sessions and he only finished at the pit after he won his one and only England cap against Northern Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast, on 2nd October 1954. He also appeared twice for England Under-23s the same season. As one of the legendary “Busby Babes”, Bill won back to back Championship medals with United in 1955/56 and 1956/57, he was an FA Cup winner in the 1963 Wembley final against Leicester City and he went on to win further Championship medals in 1964/65 and 1966/67 and played in the 1968 European Cup triumph over Benfica at Wembley. In all, he played in 563 league games and a total of 685 matches for United, then a club record only recently beaten by Bobby Charlton and Ryan Giggs.

All Our Yesterdays Bill was a survivor of the Munich air crash in February 1958. Along with Harry Gregg, he helped a number of the injured to safety from the burning plane. Eight of his team-mates lost their lives, together with club officials and a number of other passengers, including journalists who had flown with the team to cover the European Cup tie in Belgrade. Bill took over the captaincy of the team from that point, a position he held until 1966. He also switched successfully to centre-half. Remarkably, he played in every match in that fateful 1957/58 season, a feat he repeated in 1959/60, 1963/64 and the Championship season 1964/65. Bill’s final game was against Southampton on 16th August 1969. After his playing days were over, Bill was a youth team coach at Old Trafford between 1970 and 1975. He briefly managed Witney Town, before his career took him to the USA, Norway and Japan. As a coach for the Manchester FA, he particularly enjoyed conducting Japanese visitors around the Old Trafford ground, being fl ue nt in th e Ja p a n es e language, having learned it during his four years in the Far East. Saints Alive . . . A man is sitting in a restaurant having his dinner when a stunning redhead walks in and sits at the next table. She is gorgeous and the man is tempted to go over and chat to her, but his self confidence lets him down. After a few minutes, the woman sneezes and her glass eye shoots out and sails through the air towards him. Instinctively, he flings out his hand and plucks the eye out of the air. He takes it back to the woman, who is obviously quite embarrassed at the situation. Thanking him, she pops the eye back in and invites him to join her. They enjoy an excellent meal, and she insists on paying for everything. When they leave the restaurant they go to a show, which she again insists on paying for, and afterwards she takes him back to her flat and treats him to the best night of his life. In the morning he is lying in bed, exhausted after the night of passion and not believing his luck. “Wow! - that was the best evening of my whole life. Do you treat all the men you meet like that?” he asks. “Oh, no,” she replies. “You just happened to catch my eye.” Two condemned prisoners are due for execution and have been moved to the anteroom next to the execution chamber. After the prison chaplain has spoken a few words, the Governor asks one of the prisoners if he has any last request. “Yes,” replies the prisoner. “I would like to hear Little Jimmy Osmond singing ‘Long Haired Lover from Liverpool’ just one last time before I die.” The Governor agrees and sends a warder off to obtain a record player and the appropriate recording. Then he turns to the second prisoner and asks if he has any last request. “Yes,” replies the condemned man. “Please kill me now!” A man is sitting quietly one day, reading his paper, at total peace with the world, when his wife sneaks up behind him and whacks him over the head with a large frying pan. “What in Heaven’s name was that for?” he asks, bewildered. “I found a piece of paper in a pocket of your trousers, with the name ‘Marylou’ written on it,” she says, accusingly. “You stupid woman,” he counters, rubbing his sore head. “Have you forgotten that I went to the races last week? Marylou is simply the name of one of the horses I had a bet on.” Satisfied with his explanation, his wife apologises and carries on about her business. A couple of days later the man gets home from work and again settles himself down to read his paper before dinner, when he is subjected to a repeat attack with the frying pan. “What the hell is wrong this time?” he demands. “Your horse phoned.” replies his wife.
