Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this FA Challenge Vase, Third Round Tie against Northern Counties East League, Premier Division outfit Tadcaster Albion. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It has been just a week since we were last here at Brocstedes Park last Saturday taking on basement side Bacup & Rossendale Borough, whilst it might be a little bit too early on in the season to suggest that it was a relegation “six pointer” it was a vital game to take maximum points from and we got off to an excellent start, Town had all the early possession and the chances started to come. A good through ball found skipper Andy Gillespie and his effort from the edge of the box was saved by the visiting stopper before Kris Bell linked with Gillespie to open the scoring. Bell did well on the right wing advancing before picking out Gillespie with his centre and his quick touch and shot found the net evading Callum Jakovlevs in the visitor’s goal. Further pressure saw a fine move in which Gillespie linked with Jack McKay and his cross from the right found Bell whose acrobatic effort was kept out by Jakovlevs. The lead was doubled before the interval when good work by Jack Hont on the left saw him beat the full back and send a dangerous cross to the front post which Bell was on hand to head home and this saw Town 2-0 up at the break. Town threw Bacup a lifeline not long after the restart when a sloppy piece of defending which saw Hamish Falconer and Rory Crowther leave the ball for each other to deal with and eventually Crother was forced to act but the striker got to the ball fractionally before him and the keeper caught him giving a penalty away. Crowther quickly atoned for his error as he dusted himself down to save Martin Ormesher’s initial effort from the spot and then was quickly back up to block the rebound. This aberration aside it was a comfortable second half for the hosts as they secured a vital three points in the battle to stay away from the relegation zone. Moving onto today’s contest it’s fair to say that we will be massive underdogs in this afternoon’s tie against the leaders of the Northern Counties East League, Premier Division, the bookmakers will be making the visitors the favourites for the tie and all the pressure and expectation will be on the Brewers to win the contest this afternoon. Everything I have seen in the media and on Social Media says that we have no chance this afternoon and with some predicting an emphatic win for Tadcaster Albion. The Yorkshire outfit are flying this season and are looking to secure a the single promotion place to the Evo-Stik league with the battle at the top of the table being an intriguing one similarly to the battle at the top of the table in the NWCL, Premier Division. Hopefully the fact that there is no pressure on Town will see the lads relax and put on a good performance this afternoon in reality we will need to perform at the top of our game to stand any chance of advancing this afternoon but we seem to have been a bit of an FA Vase team showing guts and determination at vital times in some of the contests no more so that in the previous round at Alnwick Town. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto victory you support is vital to the cause! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

Town v Bacup
In Town Today The club is believed to have been formed in 1892 as John Smith's Football Club, the founders took this name as the location of their ground in Tadcaster is situated behind the John Smith’s brewery. They have their roots in the York Football League and records show that they played in it prior to 1909 Tadcaster Albion, in the early days, played home games on the site of the cricket ground on Station Road, before moving to the Ings ground, near to where the present Samuel Smith Brewery Packaging Block now stands. Changing facilities were in the town, at the rear of the Falcon Public House on Chapel Street, and it was a common Saturday afternoon sight to see nets, corner flags, buckets, oranges, players and officials trekking through the town. Down the years the club has played in several leagues. In early times, Barkston Ash and later still the Yorkshire and Northern Counties East Leagues. In the 1909–10 season John Smith's gained promotion from the old York League Division Two into the top flight of the York League system, where they would compete against the likes of York City “A”, Rowntrees, Heworth and others. The club encountered problems in the early 1920s, but in 1923 came back under the new name of Tadcaster Albion. The league committee placed them in the second-level division of the York League, which they won that season and were promoted.
NWCFL Premier Division action at Brocstedes Park, Ashton St Helens Town 2-0 BRBFC Saturday 29th November 2014
By 1926–27, Tadcaster were back under the John Smith's name and were playing at the second level of the York League again; oddly, a second team was founded in 1930 under the name of Tadcaster Albion, they both played on the same field and even rose up the divisions together, Smith's won the second level championship in 1932–33. It is thought that this was in case one club went into trouble, then the other could continue on in a better league position. They both merged because of World War II and kept the Tadcaster Albion name, along with the nickname “the Brewers”. Albion won the York Football League in 1947–48, beating out a competitive pack which included York Railway Institute , who would dominate largely in the following years. Despite winning the league, Tadcaster were not promoted and continued on through the 1950s. Football continued on the Ings ground until 1960, when the club moved 100 yards up river to its present home at the Park. Tadcaster joined the Yorkshire League, Division Three in 1973–74. During their second season in the league, they were promoted to the Yorkshire League Division Two, narrowly missing out on the runner-up spot on goal average. The goal difference tables would be turned in favour of Albion during the 1976–77 season, when they were promoted to the Yorkshire League Division One on goal average. They had a very good cup run during the 1977–78 season as they reached the 5th round of the FA Vase. Relegations followed in 1979 and again in 1980. In 1982–83 they became a founding member of the Northern Counties East League, they remained in Division One for fifteen seasons. In 2009–10 they won the Northern Counties East League, Division One Title and followed this In 2010–11 with a 4th placed finish in the Northern Counties East League, Premier Division and won the NCEL President's Cup beating Farsley AFC 5–1 in the final. The club have been ever present in the NCEL Premier Division ever since and in the autumn of the 2013-14 season they lead the NCEL Premier for the first time in their history, eventually finishing the season in 3rd position after having 4 points deducted for fielding an ineligible player.

Match Report Important win for Town ahead of Vase clash St Helens Town 2-0 Bacup & Rossendale Borough St. Helens Town duly completed their expected win over basement club Bacup & Rossendale Borough on Saturday, thereby securing their first “double” of the season, with a solid 2-0 victory. More importantly, this was their seventh win of the league season, six of which have come against the bottom five clubs in the table and with only two games remaining against that quintet, they put valuable clear water between themselves and the relegation-threatened teams. With three teams set to lose their Premier League status at the end of the season, it was a must-win game and Town passed their test with flying colours, dominating throughout. The architects of the success were the strike duo of Andy Gillespie and Kris Bell, who scored a goal apiece and were streets ahead of their East Lancashire opponents and the duo always looked likely to score in the first half. The teams were evenly matched in the opening quarter, but Town stepped up their game as confidence grew. Without Chad Whyte, who was on holiday, Gillespie adopted a more central role and he is gaining fitness and pace game by game, following his return from horrific facial injuries suffered on Easter Monday and is now approaching his best form. Bell, on the other hand, is a recent recruit from Warrington League side Rylands. He surely has a big future in the game and Town will be looking to capitalise on his razor-sharp touches and eye for goal for as long as they can. As it turned out, he left the field, presumably as a precautionary measure, five minutes into the second half, having all but secured the three points in a devastating 20-minute spell at the end of the opening period. Town’s first chance came after 15 minutes, Gillespie bursting clear, but Bacup keeper Callum Jakovlevs saved well low down, but the striker made no mistake with his second opportunity on 27 minutes, poking past the keeper following a crisp pass along the by-line by Bell. Bell then had a chance of his own immediately afterwards, only just clearing the visitors’ crossbar. Aaron Morris then went on another run, but failed to get the necessary force behind his shot to trouble Jakovlevs, but the game was put effectively beyond Bacup’s reach six minutes from the break, when Bell headed home an exquisite cross from full-back Jack Hont out on the touchline and the teams went in with Town two goals to the good. Bell was taken off five minutes after the resumption, Marcus Perry deputising and almost immediately, Town were penalised following a defensive error, which resulted in keeper Rory Crowther bringing down Martin Ormesher, but the 17-year-old stopper guessed correctly and saved the same player’s spot kick. That was Bacup’s only real chance of the second half and, no doubt mindful of the big test ahead next Saturday, St. Helens were content to tighten up in midfield and defence, thereby dealing comfortably with all Bacup could throw at them and Town’s only real chance in front of goal was Perry’s well-placed shot on 55 minutes, which just evaded the base of the far post.
With 23 games of the 42-match season behind them, Town are well-placed to preserve their everpresent status in the NW Counties League top flight and they can now turn their full attention to plotting the downfall of Tadcaster Albion on Saturday, the winners of the tie going into the last 32 and, even if they go no further, they will collect £1500 from the Carlsberg sponsorship and enjoy an exemption next season from the first three rounds of the competition. From the Chair Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for this FA Vase 3rd Round tie against our first time opponents Tadcaster Albion. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with our own home support have had a safe journey and are treated to an entertaining encounter. This afternoon’s visitors are having a superb season and currently lead the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division as well as featuring among the ‘bookies’ favourites for the FA Vase. The ‘Brewers’ are certainly ‘on the up’ with big changes at the club over the last year or so since i2i Sports Limited took over control at Ings Lane - of course we wish them well (apart from today) as they look to make progress up the non-league ranks. Both teams will be looking to reach the last 32 of the competition at which point Monday’s draw becomes national. Today’s prize money of £1500 would also be a welcome boost!
Tadcaster reached the 3rd Round with a narrow 2-1 home win over Morpeth two weeks ago - a hotly disputed penalty (at least by Morpeth) separating the two sides. Prior to this the Brewers had defeated Winsford United 2-3 at the Barton Stadium. For Town today will be our fifth game in this season’s Vase with wins over Irlam (1-2aet), Nostell Miners Welfare (3-0), Yorkshire Amateur (31) and Alnwick Town (4-5aet). I would like to thank to today’s Honorary Match Sponsors the Melissa Adams Angelman Foundation - Melissa and her family will be joining us this afternoon and the club is supporting the charity’s aims of raising awareness of Angelman Syndrome with a feature elsewhere in today’s programme - please take a look at the charity website www.researchangelman.org.uk and please give Melissa your support. We must also thank today’s match ball sponsor Phone Mechanics who are based in St Mary’s Market, St Helens. Prior to kick off both starting line-ups and today’s match officials will pose for an informal joint photograph as part of the Football Association’s commemorations of the World War I 1914 Christmas truce ‘Football Remembers’. Full details of the event are detailed in today’s programme - and look out for the photo on our website following the game. Ian and the lads know they will need to be at their best to take anything from today’s game but this is the FA Vase as many at the club know anything can happen on the day - whatever the result we wish Tadcaster a safe journey home best wishes for the remainder of the season. Finally, congratulations to Alan Gillespie and John Whelan who earned the Cheshire FA Under 21s League Manager of the Month award for November following five successive victories, playing some fantastic football. John McKiernan Chairman St Helens Town AFC

Club News St Helens Town and Tadcaster Albion are to commemorate the centenary of one of the most iconic moments of the First World War - the 1914 Christmas Truce – as part of a week of remembrance activity in December 2014. 'Football Remembers Week' will take place from 5-14 December. A joint collaboration between The FA, the Premier League, the Football League and the British Council, the aim is to engage football fans and players at every level about what took place on Christmas Day one hundred years ago on the battlefields in Belgium. On 25 December 1914, soldiers from both sides put down their weapons and crossed into ‘no man’s land’ to share in an impromptu ceasefire. Firsthand accounts from the time include references to football being played and photographs taken. The 22 players who start the FA Vase 3rd Round match on Saturday will pose together with the Match Officials prior to kick off. All photos uploaded to social media using #footballremembers will be automatically uploaded to a special website – www.footballremembers.com. The site shall act as a moment of record of football in 2014, a century on from the First World War, and will be preserved for future generations. HRH The Duke of Cambridge, President of The FA, said: “It promises to be a powerful way to engage and educate young people about such an important moment in our history. We all grew up with the story of soldiers from both sides putting down their arms on Christmas Day, and it remains wholly relevant today as a message of hope over adversity, even in the bleakest of times.” How it will work For ALL matches taking place from 5-14 December, all players involved will pose together in a mixed group photograph as a mark of respect to those on both sides that took part in the 1914 Christmas Truce. Each home team should nominate someone to take the photo.
Fans, teams and schools will be asked to upload their pre-match pictures via social media over the course of Football Remembers Week. Any match of any size can be uploaded, from school to Sunday league fixtures, five-a-side matches to kickabouts in the back garden. Those posting photos to social media should use #footballremembers to ensure it is uploaded to the special footballremembers.com website. Any other information is welcome. The website shall act as a moment of record of football in 2014, a century on from the First World War, and will be preserved for future generations. Football Remembers kicked off in May 2014 when the four partners launched a Football Remembers education pack that was sent to more than 30,000 schools across the UK. It includes resources to help children learn about the Truce – including eye-witness accounts, photos, drawings and letters from soldiers some of which have never been published before.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop.

A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town Managers Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987Combination Championship Trophy 92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the from Wesley Bridge in 1972 mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

Past & Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s.
2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price (left) took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.
