Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from West Didsbury & Chorlton. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It has been an excellent week for us as our back to back wins have seen us rocket up the table to the heady heights of 8th position. Last Saturday saw us take the trip to Glossop and after a shaky start where we were on the rack for the first quarter of an hour and went behind but recovered well with Andy Gillespie levelling after turning home the loose ball after the home stopper was unable to hold a Shaun Judge free kick. Judge then put Town in the lead from the spot after Adam Storey had been felled by Proctor in the Glossop goal and the keeper was lucky to escape with just a yellow card. The hosts levelled before the break and Town looked to be in for a tough 2nd half but it was the visitors who started the second period best and Mike Sykes-Wright fired home from 25 yards to put Town back in the ascendancy. Gillespie had an effort which struck the post before a late onslaught from Glossop saw Ciaran Gibson excel in the Town goal making a couple of world class saves which helped Town hold on to take all three points. Tuesday night saw the visit of Squires Gate to Brocstedes Park and with Town out to continue their excellent form and also with the side issue of extracting revenge for a 3-0 reverse in August we set about the task in the right fashion early on with strike duo Andy Gillespie & Adam Storey causing problems for the visitors. The only surprise was that it took so long for Town to take the lead which we did just after the half hour mark when a well flighted free kick from Shaun Judge on the right wing was deftly flicked home by Connor Sanderson. This was followed soon afterwards when Gillespie powered home his second in two matches and we went into the interval 2-0 up. Town weathered a 15 minute Squires Gate storm at the start of the second period and effectively put the game beyond their visitors when Judge slalomed through the visiting defence before sending the ball past the visiting stopper for a fine solo goal before it became the Connor Sanderson show as he ran onto a through ball before chipping the ball over the keeper just in the box and followed this with an even better finish, lobbing the keeper from the right hand edge of the box for Town’s fifth and completing his hat-trick in added on time to round off a comfortable victory. This afternoon sees us take on West Didsbury & Chorlton who we have never played in a competitive contest, indeed this is only the Manchester clubs second season in the North West Counties League having finished third in the First Division in their inaugural season and securing promotion due to Formby’s inability to be promoted due to ground grading issues. This is an important spell of games with us hosting four league matches here before the end of October and throw in a League Cup match for good measure and we will have a yard-stick of our progress at the end of this period. In Town Today . . . West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC have come a long way in their 105 years since 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury. West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Division 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development now ironically called Christie Fields office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard

. . . West Didsbury & Chorlton Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Division 1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 promises to be another testing season as the club adjusts to life in the NWCFL Premier Division, improves its spectator facilities, adds new grass pitches and youth teams as part of its development plan, and aims for long term consolidation and stability at this level whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this NWCFL Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals West Didsbury & Chorlton FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with our own followers are treated to an entertaining game. It’s been a great week for the club with two excellent wins which has seen Town elevated to 8th place in the Premier Division. Last Saturday we travelled to Glossop North End where a tough game is always expected - Town ran out 2-3 winners with Andy Gillespie and Shaun Judge giving them the lead after the ‘Hillmen’ had opened the scoring. It was 2-2 at half time but a goal from Michael Sykes-Wright secured the points, despite a late rally from Glossop. Midweek we entertained Squires Gate, looking to avenge the 3-0 reverse we suffered at School Road at the start of the season - a top draw performance saw the lads run out 5-0 winners, replicating last season’s home score-line against the seasiders. Connor Sanderson hit a hattrick and both Andy Gillespie and Shaun Judge continued their good form. It’s is our first competitive meeting with West Didsbury & Chorlton, although we did travel to Brookburn Road during the 2012-13 pre-season - today’s visitors eventually running out 2 -1 winners. West have had a mixed start to life in the NWCFL top flight, after a dreadful start results have settled and the club had an impressive September with four wins and a draw from their five outings; which also saw them make FA Vase progress. More recently West have suffered narrow defeats against Runcorn Town and Bacup while during midweek they drew 0-0 with Alsager. Don’t forget in two weeks time the club is holding a Race Night fundraiser at Windleshaw Sports Club, £2 entry includes hotpot supper. Details have been confirmed for the Bert Trautmann Memorial game which will take place on Sunday 17th November - full details are in tonight’s programme. Glossop North End v Town . . . Glossop North End 2-3 St Helens Town Saturday 5th October 2013, NWCFL Premier Division St. Helens Town extended their unbeaten record to five games with an impressive 3-2 win at Surrey Street, Glossop, on Saturday. As a result, they climbed to twelfth place in the NW Counties Premier Division table, ahead of a run of ten home games in the next eleven fixtures (one a League Cup tie) and a reasonable return from this run should see them consolidate their position in the top half of the table. The game was an end-to-end affair throughout, keeping the 190 crowd on their toes. The home side took the lead on 15 minutes through leading scorer Tom Bailey, who turned a Town defender on the left hand side and hit an impressive shot past Ciaran Gibson in the St. Helens goal. Town themselves were soon hunting the equaliser and Adam Storey, who had another fine game, almost scored three minutes later, his shot going the wrong side of the upright. Just about half an hour had gone when Town were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, after Andy Gillespie took an elbow to the head. Shaun Judge’s shot was deflected by centre back Lincoln Adams and Gillespie himself was on hand to net the stray ball. Hardly had the game re-started, Town were on the attack again. This time Storey was through on keeper Ben Proctor. He took the ball round the custodian and as he followed up to net the ball, Proctor brought him down and, to the home side’s relief, collected only a yellow card. Shaun Judge made no mistake from the penalty spot and St. Helens were 2-1 up. Glossop levelled on 37 minutes when, following another break down the left, Alex Byrne turned Michael Sykes-Wright inside out before scoring from the same position as his side’s opening goal. Town enjoyed their best spell in the opening stages of the second half. Gillespie had a great chance to restore his team’s lead on 52 minutes, but fired over the bar with the goal at his mercy. However, it hardly mattered as, within a minute, Sykes-Wright atoned for his earlier error by hitting a fierce shot from 25 yards which nicked a defender on its way in past Proctor to put Town 3-2 up. The only surprise was that that was the way the scoreline stood to the end. Both sides had a host of chances to score further goals. For Town, Connor Sanderson had a great chance on 75 minutes when he broke from half-way but just could not get sufficient power in his final shot, then Gillespie made a similar break in the 88th minute, but just missed the target. As the game entered its closing stages, Glossop had the better chances and, with Gibson once again in outstanding form, producing two saves from last-gasp efforts on his own line, combined with some desperate poor finishing from the home side, Town survived the onslaught and even had enough time to go close at the other end, Gillespie again going just wide with another shot. This hardly looks the same team which went out of the FA Vase with such a poor showing at Pontefract Collieries four weeks ago. Ian Granite has put real belief and confidence into his side and recent introductions Storey and Gillespie up front are beginning to terrorise opposing defences, Gibson in goal looks very impressive and few teams get past the new central defensive pairing of Andy Mawdsley and Lewis Coyle. On recent showings, captain Lee Crompton is going to have all on getting back into the side when he returns from injury. Glyn Jones

A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place public-access AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. Reserve Team News . . . St Helens Town Reserves Nick Robinson’s Reserve team have had an excellent start to the season which included a recent 2-1 win over South Liverpool Reserves at the Windleshaw Sports ground with goals from Joe McKeegan and Andy Gillespie. Last Saturday they suffered their first loss of the campaign when beaten 1-3 at home to Hale Reserves. Player Pen Pictures . . . Ryan Taylor - joined the club from Atherton LR during the 2012/13 season. Ryan featured at both full back and in goal last season and has worked hard to establish himself as the club’s number one goalkeeper for the 2013/14 season. Andrew Mawdsley - plays right back but is also comfortable at centre half. He joined the club at the beginning of the 2012/13 season from Wigan Robin Park. Andrew’s previous clubs include Ashton Town and Skelmersdale United. Greg Harrison - a left back who is equally as effective playing left midfield. He joined the club at the beginning of the 2012/13 season from Wigan Robin Park. Greg also had a spell with Ashton Town. Chris Williams - a centre back who joined the club early on in the 2012/13 season from AFC Liverpool. Before playing for AFC Liverpool Chris played for Wigan Robin Park.

Lewis Coyle

Lee Crompton - Lee joined the club from Wigan Robin Park where he was part of the NWCFL Division One winning team. The centre back is the club captain and has been since he joined at the start of the 2012/13 season. Prior to playing for Wigan Robin Park Lee played for Ashton Town. Lewis Coyle - can play centre back or centre forward. He joined the club at the start of the 2013/14 season from Atherton LR. Lewis has also had spells with Ashton Town and Marine Reserves. Shaun Judge - a versatile left footed player who can play centre midfield as well as left midfield and left back. Shaun joined the club during the 2012/13 season from Wigan Robin Park and has previously had spells at Ashton Town and Burscough.

Cole is a former youth player at Wigan Athletic. Kenny Cooper - a central midfield player who joined the club from Golborne at the start of the 2013/14 season. Connor Sanderson - a versatile player who can play centre midfield, left midfield or centre forward. He joined the club at the start of the 2013/14 season from Stockport Sports. Town v Squires Gate . . . St Helens Town 5-0 Squires Gate Tuesday 8th October 2013, NWCF League Premier Division It’s six games unbeaten now for St. Helens Town and this latest victory over a useful Squires Gate outfit who have had their own run of success recently shows how far the club has come since the FA Vase debacle at Pontefract Collieries. The Blackpool side contributed a good deal to this game, hitting the bar twice in the second half, but St. Helens could have scored ten, such was the extent of their supremacy, particularly going forward. The Town forwards simply ran riot, with Adam Storey, Andy Gillespie and Connor Sanderson helping themselves to a feast of chances. Storey set the scene after 15 minutes when he fired narrowly wide of the far post from a tight angle. Five minutes later, he linked with Gillespie, drew the keeper and Gillespie just missed at the other post. St. Helens took the lead on 37 minutes when, from a corner, Storey drew the defence and Sanderson ghosted through behind him and placed a glancing header past Fletcher in the Squires Gate goal. Four minutes later, Town went 2-0 up when a stray back pass caught the central defenders napping and Gillespie dashed into the gap between them and fired home from close range. Gillespie himself could have extended the lead further just before the interval, but having latched on to a failed clearance, could only blast his shot over the bar. Squires Gate have earned a reputation of late of coming from behind to win matches and they began the second half on the attack. However, Town stormed back and Sanderson went close on 50 minutes, hitting over the bar following a flowing move. A minute later and another training ground move saw Storey put Gillespie through on the keeper who did well to turn the shot over the line for a corner. Sanderson, however, could not find the net from a shot from close range. The result was confirmed on the hour mark when Shaun Judge, running through from 40 yards past a number of bewildered defenders, found a series of gaps. He dribbled through, side-stepped the final challenge and fired home to put his side three up. Five minutes later, Gillespie intercepted a loose pass, turned but shot just wide. The fourth goal came after 84 minutes and fell to Connor Sanderson. He split the defence with his electrifying pace, drew Fletcher and placed his shot perfectly between the final two defenders. If anything, his third goal in the last minute upstaged his earlier efforts. Receiving the ball at pace dashing towards the corner of the penalty area, he hit it on the volley and his shot flew over the head of the keeper into the top corner. This spectacular win moved Town into eighth place in the table and, with a run of four more home league games to come before the end of the month, they have every chance of strengthening their position in the top half of the table. With no midweek game next week, their next fixture is at Brocstedes Park on Saturday, 19th October against Silsden, a game brought forward from April. NWCFL News . . . This week, resident blogger and Atherton Collieries secretary Emil Anderson looks at one of his least favourite football routines - the pre-match warm up. "In recent years one aspect of the non league game which has become more professional is the pre match Warm Up. It is not my favourite part of the match day experience. I played in the Leigh League rather than in the non league pyramid and am positive I didn’t do a warm up as such. From my memory there were at least 3 groups and I wasn’t part of any of them. Group 1 were the lads who put the nets up, I am not technically minded and was therefore given a dispensation from this job. Group 2 were the smokers who dawdled up to the field and waited until seconds before kick off time before having a last nicotine rush before chucking their fag away. The final group were the crossers and the headers. My crossing wasn’t very accurate and as for heading I was 6 foot before I jumped and 5 foot 10’ at the summit of my leap. I did some research. My dad, who played for the excellent Colls team of the 60’s, said he ran across the pitch a couple of times, and our chairman’s mate who played for Horwich RMI in the 1st round proper of the FA Cup said his routine was to jump up and down on the spot in the dressing room. Granted over time the warm up had become more intensive and non league clubs began to ape their professional counterparts (as seen on TV), but now it has taken on a life of its own. Teams tend to start up to a hour before kick off with a bit of stretching before a seemingly never ending set of sprints, doggies and other complicated running exercises with the intensity gradually rising. Warm up is generally finished with a no holds barred 7/8 a-side game in a condensed space, where the lads put on garish coloured bibs to identify their team mates. At the end of it, the player’s cardio vascular must be through the roof as they trudge of the pitch for their Wine Gums and Jaffa Cakes while the groundsman’s blood pressure is at the same level as they frantically apply remedial work on their pride and joy before kick off. I get exhausted just watching the shenanigans. Another point is amount of gear required, training balls, rope ladders, cones, plastic sticks, and the aforementioned bibs. The list is endless. I have seen clubs visit Alder House with a trailer full of gear. If nothing else, the warm up may help bring our economy out of recession. I acknowledge I have been a trifle glib. I recognise the need for footballers to prepare for the game properly in order to get physically and mentally attuned. A thorough warm up can give a team that vital edge and also help avoid a niggling injury but in my humble opinion things have gone too far,

Back to Business . . . Back in 2009, St Helens Town celebrated the 60th anniversary of the transfer of our legendary goalkeeper and Club President Bert Trautmann (left) with a star studded game against a team of former Man City players. Following the sad news earlier this year that Bert had passed away at his home in Spain at the age of 89, I made contact with Manchester City FC and both clubs once again felt a need to join together to mark the occasion and although this time on sadder terms, it was unanimously decided that the contribution of this iconic man to the history of both clubs needed to remembered and celebrated. I can now proudly confirm that the Bert Trautmann Memorial Game will take place between St Helens Town and Man City Past Players XI on Sunday 17th November 2013 at Prescot Cables FC’s Hope Street Ground. Kick Off 2pm. After much discussion on a suitable venue for the game to be played, taking into account that our club currently are without our own ground, the popular choice was Hope Street, Prescot. Town tasted there first major success at Hope Street in 1949 when the team, including Bert in goal lifted the George Mahon Trophy in the final in front of 9000 people. I would like to extend the thanks of everyone at St Helens Town to the committee and management at Prescot Cables FC for allowing us to stage the game at the club. Man City and their Past Players Association, of which Bert was also a member are very keen to make this tribute a very special occasion and our warm fondness and love for Bert in clearly echoed at City. Our Premier League friends have committed to sending a strong team of former players for the game, many of them club legends in their own right as well as a number of high profile guests. Amongst the players who are hoped to be in attendance is Former City, Utd and England winger Peter Barnes, whose late father Ken also played with Bert at Man City. Other names mentioned but yet to be confirmed in the star studded City team are Shaun Goater, Uwe Rosler, Didi Hamann, Asa Hartford, Steve Redmond, The Brightwell Brothers, Eric Nixon and Andy Morrison. It is also hoped that amongst our VIP guests on the day will be members of the Trautmann family and some of Bert’s former team mates as well as The Mayor of St Helens Cllr Andy Bowden, Representatives of the Borough Authorities and Ambassadors of Manchester City. The day should be a wonderful occasion for all football fans both marking the sad passing and celebrating the life of an incredible man. Proceeds from the game will be used to support a number of charities including our adopted charity Hearts & Goals, The Trautmann Foundation and The Mayor’s Charity, and we ask that fans of all clubs come along and support this very special day.
