Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Wimsford United. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It has been a frustrating last couple of weeks as we have fell to successive 1-0 reverses. The first a fortnight ago saw us welcome Colne to Brocstedes Park and follow the recent trend of conceding early goals as we gave away a soft free kick which when delivered we spurned two opportunities to clear and this in the final reckoning was to cost us the contest. We played better in the second period but could not convert any of the chances we created and fell to our first league defeat in fourteen matches. The bad day at the office was rounded off as the reserves exited the Liverpool County FA Junior Cup at the Quarter Final stage at the hands of Hale Reserves. In an identical score line to the league contest earlier in the season, the only side to have defeated the second string in the league came away from Windleshaw with a 3-1 victory with Paul Cook-Hannah netting for the hosts. We then as is the norm at this time of the year had to wait a week to get back on the park as we took the long trip to Silsden looking to secure our third “double” of the season. The early stages saw some good pressure from the visitors but a counter attack saw the home side deliver the ball from the right into the box and some poor defending presented the ball to a home striker, an early Christmas present if you will and another early goal was conceded. Three good chances were spurned as Nathan Parish, Danny Owens & Lee Crompton all headed efforts straight at Hall in the home goal. Ciaran Gibson saved a rather generously awarded penalty late in the first half and with worsening weather conditions as the wind picked up and the rain got heavier the game became very disjointed in the second period which suited the host with their goal advantage and Town were unable to truly test the home stopper. News on the reserve front was rather better last week as they completed their first “double” of the season in emphatic style recording a 5-0 away win at 6th placed Capenhurst Villa Reserves, goals from Paul Cook-Hannah and a brace a piece from Kyle Ross & Liam Houghton were enough to take the spoils and cement Town at the top of the table with all the top five recording victories on the afternoon. Ian & Paul will know that the lads need to perform to their potential this afternoon against visitors recently under new management as Rob Byrne has stepped up to fill the void after Eddy Haslam stepped down a fortnight ago and they recorded a vital 3-1 home win against Wigan Robin Park to climb out of the relegation zone and will come into this in confident mood. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto victory. May I take this opportunity to wish everyone all the best for a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year (especially for Town) for all at the club. In Town Today . . . Winsford United have a long and proud history, having been formed way back in 1883. In those early days, the club was called Over Wanderers and competed in the Welsh Combination Football League. After a few seasons, the club changed to its present name and its present ground Barton Stadium - although it was called Great Western Playing Field at the outset. The club brought on many good players during this period and after losing several players to Football League clubs, they experienced a somewhat unsuccessful spell that resulted in the club folding. United reformed in 1913, thanks in the main to the then secretary, Mr W H Burning, but it was short lived as World War One broke out. After the cessation of hostilities, United regrouped with a new committee headed by Mr R G Barton (hence Barton Stadium) and the club became a founder member of the Cheshire League, winning the Championship in its second season. That was to be one of the few successes as the Blues struggled to survive both on and off the field. United became a Limited company and the 1950’s saw the Blues win the Cheshire League Cup three times and a Cheshire Senior Cup victory. In the 60’s and early 70’s the Blues returned to struggling ways with only a rare FA Cup First Round appearance at Peterborough to shout about. United lost the game 4-1. That match acted as a springboard and, under John Williams, Winsford United hit the glory trail. Between 1976 and 1980, the Blues won the Cheshire League title in 1976/77, were runners-up in 1979/80 and set a new record by winning the League Cup four seasons out of five, including a hat-trick of wins (1979 & 80 & 81). They won the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1980 and made an appearance in the quarterfinals of the FA Trophy in 1978. It was in John Williams’ final season that the former Everton and Welsh International goalkeeper, Neville Southall, was sold to Bury for £6,000. A sell on clause later netted United a club record figure of around £30,000 when he moved to Goodison Park. After that halcyon period, United’s fortunes again nose-dived. The Cheshire League merged with The Lancashire League to become The North West Counties League and the Northern Premier League formed a first division in 1987/8. The Blues were invited to join but they never really set the place on fire, seventh place being the best achieved. In January 1991, Winsford were bottom of the NPL First Division and facing a drop back down to the NWCFL. The club then pulled a masterstroke by appointing Mike McKenzie as team manager. They lost only four more games and avoided the drop. A piece of silverware was added when they beat Northwich Vics in the local cup final. In 1991/92 they gained promotion to the Premier Division, finishing as runners up and reaching the First Round of the FA Cup for only the third time in the club’s history. Season 1992/93 will go down in United’s folklore as ‘Macca’s’ men won an astonishing five trophies - the NPL Challenge Cup, NPL President’s Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup, Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup and NPL Runners Up Cup. The Blues finished second to Southport and their points total is a record for the most points accrued without winning the title. Under the management of Dalton Steele, United finished seventh in the league and lifted the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. Season 1998 saw Steele leave for Chorley, taking nearly all the team with him; Mark Came took over and finished the season off with a makeshift side. The club received another tremendous boost early in 1999 when goalkeeper Andy Oakes who had signed for Hull City for a modest fee but with a 25% sell-on clause was signed by Derby County for £480,000 giving Winsford a record amount for a Non-League sell-on clause. Came took the reigns for the 1999/2000 campaign but a run of poor results saw Kevin Tully put in the hot seat. What followed was the worst run of results in the club’s history and relegation for the first time. At the start of the 2000/2001 season in Unibond Division One Tully left, and Steve Shaughnessy was appointed Player/Manager. The team performed well throughout the season

. . . Winsford United but administrative errors resulted in 6 points being deducted and instead of finishing in a midtable spot they were relegated to The First Division of the North West Counties League. It took another 5 seasons before Winsford were able to start the long climb back. Unfortunately during that time they fell another step into NWCFL Division Two. The appointment of Dave Twite and a lot of hard work by the board saw a steady improvement in the fortunes of the club. When Dave left the club, Chris Willcock replaced him. The 2005/06 season saw Chris and assistant manager John Flanagan led the team to the Division two title. However both Chris and John left the club during the close season to take over at Woodley Sports. Former Town manager Joe Gibiliru took over for the 2007/8 season and Winsford spent the majority of that term in the top half of the table before finishing in 10th position. They club secured some silverware when they won the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup defeating fellow Vodkat League, Division One outfit Congleton Town in the final, running out 2-1 winners with a late goal. Former manager Chris Willcock took over at the start of 2010-11 with Ian Street as his Assistant. Once again there was an air of optimism which was justified as the club spent most of the early part of the season at the top of the table. There was a shock at the beginning of February however and more than a little touch of déjà vu when Willcock announced he was once again leaving to take charge at Woodley Sports, leaving Ian Street in charge. The club finished the season in a creditable third place and were victorious in the Challenge Cup Final against Premier Division Champions New Mills Ian Street remained in charge for the 2011-2012 season and Kevin Bircumshaw was appointed as his Assistant. The team made a great start to the season, spending several weeks at or near the top of the table and promotion looked a distinct possibility. However a series of suspensions and injuries saw the team have a bad run in the weeks leading up to Christmas gaining just two points from a possible twenty-four. The form was recovered in the New Year but the gap had become too great and Winsford ended the season in seventh place. There was a massive boost for the club when the local council not only became the club’s main sponsor but they revealed their “Neighbourhood Plan” which centred on developing the centre of the town next to the river with a purpose-built Conference Standard stadium for the Blues with the Barton Stadium being used for housing. Although it is early days it has given the club and its supporters a great deal of optimism. The summer break saw Ian Street decide to take a post closer to home and he accepted the job of Manager at Ashton Athletic. The Manager’s position was advertised and although there were many creditable applicants the board had no hesitation in appointing former Flixton Manager Lloyd Morrison with Kevin Bircumshaw remaining as his Assistant. The season was one of the most successful for years with the club finishing 5th in the league and defeating Northwich Victoria in the final of the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. The summer of 2013 saw great changes taking place at the stadium with the news that 1874 Northwich were to share the ground and their enthusiastic supporters helped to bring the ground up to a high standard, Also E.ON adopted the club for their 2013 Community Project and carried out a great refurbishment of the facilities including a new toilet block, a first aid suite and help in restoring the floodlights. They also supplied the materials for all the maintenance work that had to be carried out. However, with everything in place for a serious assault on the league title and over £20,000 spent on improving the facilities and pitch, the club was rocked when two weeks before the start of the season Lloyd Morrison announced he was going to Mossley AFC as Joint Manager and not only that, he expected to take sixteen registered players with him. The board acted quickly to appoint Eddy Haslam as Manager with Rob Byrne as his Assistant and Kevin Bircumshaw remaining as coach. With only a couple of weeks to put a team together Eddy worked hard to bring in a squad of quality players to begin the campaign. Haslam stepped down a fortnight ago with the club in the relegation zone and Byrne stepped up with Bircumshaw as his assistant.

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Winsford United. It’s been a disappointing week or so for the first team on the pitch with two very tight games against Colne and Silsden netting a nil return as both encounters finished 1-0 to our opponents. Both games saw us concede an early goal which ultimately cost us at least a share of the spoils. Glyn Jones’ match report as well as photos from both games are in today’s programme. Many thanks to David S. Brett for allowing us to make use of his excellent photos from last week’s game. Also worthy of note was Silsden’s excellent half time hospitality - hot turkey sandwiches and other Christmas fayre - a real highlight on what was a wet and windy afternoon in West Yorkshire. Today’s visitors have a turbulent season with the departure of manager Lloyd Morrison to Mossley just days before the start of the campaign which also saw the majority of players follow him. Just a couple of week ago his successor Eddy Haslam stepped down with the Blues in the relegation zone and Keith Bircumshaw, his assistant has been installed as manager. Winsford suffered a couple of narrow defeats against Alsager Town and Bacup & Rossendale Borough recently (both 1-2) but last weekend a 3-1 home victory over basement club Wigan Robin Park lifted them out of the relegation zone. Two goals from Dennis Sherriff in the opening 30 minutes put Winsford ahead before the Robins hit back and it was Dominic Marie who hit a stoppage time goal to see the home side. Town v Colne . . . Early goal ends Town unbeaten run St Helens Town 0-1 Colne Saturday 7th December 2013 St. Helens Town lost for the first time in 14 NW Counties league matches when they went down 1-0 to Colne at Brocstedes Park on Saturday. The game brought together two teams with newly-appointed managers and it was local lad Steve Cunningham who came out on top over new Town boss Ian Price in a close fought match, thanks to a fourth minute goal from Nathan Bond, who finished neatly from a back-heeled pass, which caught out Daniel Lowton, making his debut in the Town goal in place of Ciaran Gibson. Town tried hard to get back into the game and perhaps the best chance fell to Danny Owens, who scuffed a good chance in front of goal in the tenth minute. The first half was a midfield battle and Townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s forwards, who have been dominant over the last three months, could not get in with any sort of chance for long periods. Lowton saved well from a Colne free-kick on 35 minutes, tipping the ball over his bar. St. Helens went down the other end and Adam Storey, returning to the starting eleven for the first time in four games, hit a powerful strike inches over the visitorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; crossbar a minute later. Top scorer Andy Gillespie had his best chance of the game five minutes before the break when he surged forward down the left flank, then rounded the fullback, but as he moved in to strike the ball, Adam Stockdale pulled off a tremendous last-ditch tackle to take the ball off the centre forwardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s feet. Half-time arrived with the visitors 1-0 in front and they began the second half in confident fashion, smothering pass after pass from the Town midfield. Chances for the home side were at a premium and if another goal was to be scored, Colne looked the more likely to get it. However, the St. Helens defence held firm and restricted their opponents to few opportunities. The best chance came after 66 minutes, but was thwarted with a tremendous blocking tackle from Town captain Lee Crompton, who had perhaps his best game in a red and white shirt this season. With the game entering its closing stages and a share of the points still up for grabs, Neil Weaver came off the bench and he injected pace into the attack and there were several opportunities to get the leveller. Weaver himself had a good chance, which was cleared for a corner, then deep into injury time, one last push saw the ball cross the Colne line, but the effort was disallowed following a foul on goalkeeper Chris Thompson.

Silsden v Town Report . . . Saturday 14th December 2013 Silsden 1-0 St Helens Town St. Helens Town lost a second consecutive game by the only goal at Silsden on Saturday, but had plenty of chances to take the points themselves. Equally, they might have gone down to a heavier defeat, so wasteful was the home side’s attack. Town opened well and dominated the opening exchanges, Ste Milne having the best chance to score in the fifth minute, when he let fly from the right side, but his shot skimmed across the face of the unguarded goal. Silsden pressed forward in the 14th minute and took the lead. From a break up the right wing, Deakin-Pickard’s cross found town defender Sam Pullinger, who attempted to play the ball back to ‘keeper Gibson but Josh McNulty pounced on the loose ball and fired home. Town responded with a wave of attacks, Nathan Parish and Danny Owens both having good headed efforts saved by Silsden keeper Ed Hall, before Richardson shot from 25 yards, just past the post. As the half wore on, Town might have found themselves two down. Town ‘keeper Gibson dived to smother the ball at the feet of Deakin-Pickard and referee Foster unaccountably awarded the penalty, but justice prevailed as Gibson turned the spot kick wide of his right-hand post. Silsden’s Dale Feather spurned a couple of gilt-edged chances in the run-up to half-time, which arrived with Town still in with a chance at only 0 -1 behind. The second-half was much more of a midfield stalemate - largely due to the strengthening wind and driving rain. About 10 minutes in, Town’s Mason Ryan carved out a great position from near the centre circle. He burst up the left wing, rounded the full-back but hit his shot straight at Hall, who turned it round his near post. The next chance took another 25 minutes to arise, Gibson saving at the other end in spectacular fashion. Town, of course, were still trying to salvage the game and Andy Gillespie hit a drive just wide of the post with six minutes left. At the other end, giant striker Michael Hall, just on as substitute, took the ball up 30 yards out and looked certain to score Silsden’s second, but Town skipper Lee Crompton pulled off a last-ditch tackle. In stoppage time Milne had a great chance to poke one in at the near post when he was taken out by a reckless challenge that should have produced a penalty award and ‘keeper Hall was grateful to make the save and confirm a third straight win for the home side. A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league.

Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place publicaccess AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. Town Reserves in Action . . . Saturday 14th December 2013 West Cheshire League Division 3 Capenhurst Villa Reserves 0-5 St Helens Town Reserves A minor reshuffle in the back four saw Ryan Johnson restored to right back with Ant Whelan reverting to a centre back partnership with Joe McKeegan and captain Jamie Dickson in at left back. Midfield saw Danny Norris in a deeper role partnering Ste Powell with Kyle Ross supporting striker Paul Cooke-Hannah (pictured) with Liam Houghton and Dave McNamara in the wide roles. Substitutes Steve Cannon, Billy Tierney and in form Youth team striker Marcus Perry completed the squad. Town started in a very confident manner moving the ball quickly around a decent playing surface and it wasn't long before the chances started to come as Paul Cooke-Hannah, Liam Houghton and Ste Powell all going close. The first goal was really special when it came with a crashing swerving 25 yard drive from Kyle Ross was right up there with some of the best we have scored this season. The goal was only the beginning as Town put some great moves together especially down the left where Dave McNamara, Kyle Ross and Danny Norris revelling in a deeper role produced a succession of penetrating attacks. The second goal wasn't long in coming as a Dave McNamara pinpoint left wing cross found Liam Houghton free at far post to head home. With the back four looking solid and generally comfortable it was no surprise when Joe McKeegan relinquished defensive duties to produce a 40 yard ball to far post for Paul Cooke-Hannah to head home. A three goal lead at half time was a just reward for an excellent first half performance with Capenhurst's only real chance coming from a break on left producing a fine save from 'keeper Chris Brinksman at near post. The second half started with Capenhurst showing the right response with a bright opening spell as Town initially struggled to regain their first half rhythm but that soon changed when Kyle Ross, looking very dangerous in a more central attacking role, was put free down right and he hit a low drive past the Capenhurst 'keeper into the right hand corner of net. With Capenhurst still trying to create clear chances a brave stop from Brinksman was required to maintain the clean sheet whilst at the other end a smart flick on found Perry racing down the right with his low shot rolling across the goal line it was left to Houghton to slot his second goal and Town's 5th. A very good first half performance, probably one of the best of the season sealed the three points. The main positives was the response from last week and the improving match fitness of players returning from injury but overall things definitely heading in the right direction. The Man of the Match award for a great centre forward display went to Paul Cooke-Hannah with Danny Norris and Kyle Ross not far behind. Alan Gillespie

NWCFL News . . . This week, NWCFL resident blogger and Atherton Collieries Secretary Emil Anderson pays tribute to a NWCFL legend. Farny At The Far Post Every now and again, if I am asked to continue to write this column, I am going to focus on a person who embodies all what I feel is good about the non league game. My first legend of choice is Alan Farnworth. Alan was secretary for Bolton St Thomas’s in the NWCFL in the late 80’s but unfortunately they had to disband. My club Colls seized the day and enticed Farny, as he is universally known, to Alder House with the rumoured promise of a free pie every week. This proved to be money well spent as he galvanised the club’s football organisation with his meticulous handling of the paperwork. My personal approach to the mountain of paperwork is more ad hoc, I dot my i’s and cross my t’s but generally at the last minute and not always with good grace. Anyway, the NWCFL must have spotted the potential in him and he transferred to their Management Committee permanently at the end of the 1992/93 campaign. It was Colls’ loss and Farny soon become a doyen of the ‘Counties Administration. He became Chairman of the Ground Grading Committee and his name still strikes fear in member clubs up and down the North West with his no nonsense approach to the job. If a job needed doing, he told you in no uncertain terms and if you didn’t like it - tough. Colls had been his club but he pulled no punches, he enforced the rules and he could never be accused of favouritism. We were probably the bane of his life with our occasional laissaz faire attitude but he whipped us along with the other clubs into shape. We knew the consequences if we didn’t adhere to the criteria. His ground grading blueprint has ensured that our league’s ground standards are the envy of many a league, and the fact that we have promoted so many teams to the level above bears this out. He was also Vice Chairman of the league for many years and his double act with Chairman Dave Tomlinson was a key dynamic in the continued success of the competition. They didn’t always agree but the fact that they continue to speak on the phone on a daily basis, even when Dave migrates at regular intervals to the Iberian Peninsula, shows how good a partnership they were. Over recent years Farny hasn’t been very well and has had to curtail his day to day involvement with the league. He has to limit his trips to the grounds of the NWCFL which were usually dovetailed with a visit to his favourite chippy or pie shop. He is however only a phone call away and he still dispenses sound football advice and the odd kick up the backside if he see fit. I was honoured to nominate him for a LFA Long Service Award a couple of years ago and am proud to say, even though he left the club about 20 years ago, he is still a ‘Colls Mon’. I salute you Mr Farnworth, and hope to see you at our ground very soon. I will get the growlers in! Emil Anderson

St Helens Town AFC . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought Combination Championship Trophy pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured from Wesley Bridge in 1972 below) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

. . . Managers 1946-Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 200607 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - 2013 Ian Granite (pictured left) became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 201213 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. NWCFL Club News . . . Congleton Town have found that age is no barrier when it comes to attracting supporters from different age groups. In the past few months, the Bears have had matches sponsored by two supporters who are separated in age by an amazing 93 years. First up was Harry Bowers, who will be 94 in July next year, and is still a regular at Booth Street. Town Secretary Ken Mead explained: "Harry is a life-long supporter, and such has been his contribution to the club over the years that he was made a life member some years back. "He played his first game for Congleton in 1937 and is the club's oldest surviving explayer. He lived at Brown Lees from where he used to bike over twice a week. He married a Congleton girl and eventually moved to the town where he was a Justice of the Peace. He also played for Knypersley Victoria, and Alsager Town. "Harry does his very best to remain on drinking terms with most of his friends and says years of practice have left him fully fit for the trips to the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s locals. He sponsored the game against Colne last season, and was due to sponsor our league fixture against Silsden a few weeks back, which ended up being postponed as we were playing in the FA Vase". At the other end of the age spectrum, Francesca Rose Naylor (known as Frankie to her family) was the match sponsor of the Bears game against Ashton Town in the League Challenge Cup at the end of October. At the time Frankie was just 10 weeks old, and must take some beating as one of the youngest ever Town supporters. Ken said : "Her Grandad, Don Fletcher, is sure that when he asked her if she wanted to come with him and watch Congleton Town, her beaming smile was a definite yes rather than 'you must be joking'â&#x20AC;?. Frankie was joined on the day by her Dad Dan, her uncle Rob, Grandad Don together with members of the Town "early starters club", Scholes, Fash, Rob , Pete, Colin and Max, and Des from the Congleton Ultras, who stands behind the goal. Frankie's Grandad Don Fletcher said: "I've been supporting Congleton Town for about 25 years, and my son Robert has supported them since he was about 11. My daughter had just given birth to my granddaughter, so we thought it would be a good idea to sponsor the game when she was ten weeks old. We organised a Congleton Town baby gro, with the club badge on the front and her name on the back. She joined us at half time in the hospitality area, was with us behind the goal in the second half and was awake all through the game. "Whether or not she comes down again in future depends on her dad, as he is a Man United supporter so she might end up going to Old Trafford instead".

Back to Business . . . Its been a mixed week at Town. Last Saturday saw a narrow 1-0 away to Silsden, a second consecutive league defeat bringing our great run of 14 games unbeaten to a crashing end. Despite the last two defeats however there hasn’t been a great collapse in form and both games where lost by narrow one goal margins after conceding early goals and squandering numerous chances. Hopefully we will get back to winning ways against today’s visitors Winsford United who ran out narrow 2-1 winners in the reverse fixture very early in the season with Town missing a penalty. It was with great sadness I heard last month of the death of another of our non league friends. Linda Nancollas was General Manager of todays visitors Winsford for the past eight years and our condolences and best wishes go to the club, to Linda’s family and all her friends. In particular at this happy time of year it is difficult to lose one of our friends, and likewise at this time of year, it is on bitterly cold, wet and windy days when most people are snuggled up at home in front of the fire, that we appreciate the contribution that people like Linda make to non league football clubs. Away from the football pitch however, it is been a much more positive week for Town having secured a significant new sponsor who will support the club for the remainder of the season and beyond. Zenith Global IT Solutions re-launch on January 1st 2014 after a programme of expansion and Managing Director Jim McDonald, already a friend of the club after sponsoring the Trautmann Memorial Game last month, has come on board as our Executive Match Sponsor for all our remaining home league fixtures for 201314 as well as Zenith becoming our main sponsor for our end of season Gala Dinner which will double as both our charity fundraising dinner and our 2013/14 presentation evening. Full details of the end of season dinner will be announced in the new year via the clubs website, Facebook, twitter, the NWCFL website and various other media outlets so please keep an eye out for new as we invite our friends from all NWCFL clubs to purchase tickets and join us for a fabulous night of entertainment, and fundraising for The Hearts and Goals campaign.
