Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Winsford United. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us at our new home, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. Well we have completed the run of three cup matches and it is back to the “bread and butter” of league action this afternoon as we welcome league leaders Winsford United to Edge Green Street. The period of cup football which started three weeks ago with the League Cup visit to Alsager Town has seen us need extra time in two of the matches and run out winners in all three matches, advancing to the third round of the League Cup and FA Vase and the Quarter Finals of the Liverpool Senior Cup in the process. The draws for the third round of the League Cup and FA Vase sees us take trips to AFC Blackpool and Holbrook Sports respectively. Our Vase opponents ply their trade in the East Midlands County League which is a Step 6 league (the equivalent of the Vodkat League First Division) and currently lie 11th out of the 20 teams in their division. They have seen off a couple of Step 5 teams in the competition this season having accounted for Sleaford Town and Arnold Town so we will not be underestimating them as we take them on their home turf in a fortnight.

Tuesday’s match here at Edge Green Street in the Liverpool Senior Cup against Skelmersdale United was a match full of incident as the visitors who currently sit 2nd in the Evo-Stick Division One North came into the game on the back of an 8-0 victory the previous Saturday. The 13 man squad that visited us contained 11 players that had been involved in their matchday squad for that rout and so to advance to the Quarter Finals was no mean feat. The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the early stages when former Town keeper Andy Paxton was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity as he handled a lobbed shot from Mike Kavanagh outside the area and from the resultant free kick Mike Fragher poked home the rebound after Peter Birch’s effort had been parried by the stand in stopper. Skem’ levelled from a corner ten minutes before the interval and showing no signs of their numerical disadvantage netted again midway through the second period. A late leveller from Fargher who fired home a sublime finish took the tie to extra time and Skem’s indiscipline saw them reduced to 9 men as normal skipper Aaron Turner was sent off for foul and abusive language aimed at the referee. A brave header from Luke Faulkner in the second period of extra time was enough to take the spoils and also end his game as he suffered a nasty broken nose in the process. The reward for our victory is a home tie against Tranmere Rovers. Congratulations to Liam Pearson who was nominated as the St Helens Town Player of the Month for October he will receive his Johnsons Toyota Liverpool sponsored car for a week following today post match presentations. Let’s get behind the lads this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory. Enjoy the Game . . . Jeff Voller Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Season 2010-11
Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends and current League leaders Winsford United FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own ‘home’ support are treated to an entertaining game! We return to League action this afternoon following a trio of excellent Cup victories which have been a tonic for the whole club and I am sure Lee and the lads will want to take current form into our forthcoming league action, starting this afternoon. Winsford United arrive at Edge Green Street as current Premier Division leaders courtesy of a 5-1 win at home to Ashton Athletic, taking over top spot as New Mills were in FA Vase action. Our congratulations go to Winsford’s Liam Newman and Richie Mottram who picked up the Vodkat League Premier Division Player of the Month and Goalkeeping awards respectively. As well as avenging Town’s 2-3 win at the Barton Stadium at the start of the season I am sure Winsford will be looking to maintain their current form which has seen them record seven wins from eight outings in all competitions including wins over New Mills (3-0), Glossop (3-0), Flixton (2-0), Padiham (3-1), Colne (4-1) and Maine Road (2-1). Winsford’s only recent reverse was against Runcorn Linnets (1-2) in the Cheshire Senior Cup. Our own form of late is very good and Tuesday evening saw Town defeat Skelmersdale United 3-2 aet in Round 2 of the Liverpool Senior Cup - although not one of our best performances the lads battled hard to overcome a very good Skem’ side whose indiscipline saw them finish the game with nine men. Mike Fargher gave Town an early lead following the dismissal of Skem ’keeper Andy Paxton and then he hit a late equaliser to take the game into extra time where Luke Faulkner (pictured right) headed home the winner with 8 minutes remaining and in doing so suffering a badly broken nose! A detailed match report appears later in the programme. Our reward for Tuesday evening’s success is a home tie against Tranmere Rovers on a date yet to be finalised (but I understand it will be before the end of January 2011). Congratulations goes to Alan Dowell (Skem’ Utd fan) who was the lucky winner of our half time ‘Cross Bar’ Challenge event on Tuesday evening sponsored by Johnsons Totoya Liverpool and The Vincent Hotel, Southport. A mention must go to Hayden Brimage who represented Alan in the event and was the only ‘player’ to hit the cross-bar. Pictured left to right are Gareth Shone from Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, Alan and Hayden. Many thanks to today’s match sponsors Master Valet and our matchball sponsor Tommy Smith from The Rockware, Shaw Street, St Helens. Don’t forget to join us in the clubhouse for the usual post-match debate and St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ presentations. In Town Today . . . Winsford United have a long and proud history, having been formed way back in 1883. In those early days, the club was called Over Wanderers and competed in the Welsh Combination Football League. After a few seasons, the club changed to its present name and its present ground - Barton Stadium - although it was called Great Western Playing Field at the outset. The club brought on many good players during this period and after losing several players to Football League clubs, they experienced a somewhat unsuccessful spell that resulted in the club folding. United reformed in 1913, thanks in the main to the then secretary, Mr W H Burning, but it was short lived as World War One broke out. After the cessation of hostilities, United regrouped with a new committee headed by Mr R G Barton (hence Barton Stadium) and the club became a founder member of the Cheshire League, winning the Championship in its second season. That was to be one of the few successes as the Blues struggled to survive both on and off the field. During the War, Barton Stadium was almost stripped bare to aid the war effort. After the war, United became a Limited company and the 1950’s saw the Blues win the Cheshire League Cup three times and a Cheshire Senior Cup victory. In the 60’s and early 70’s the Blues returned to struggling ways with only a rare FA Cup First Round appearance at Peterborough to shout about. United lost the game 4-1. That match acted as a springboard and, under John Williams, Winsford United hit the glory trail. Between 1976 and 1980, the Blues won the Cheshire League title in 1976/77, were runners-up in 1979/80 and set a new record by winning the League Cup four seasons out of five, including a hat-trick of wins (1979 & 80 & 81). They won the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1980 and made an appearance in the quarterfinals of the FA Trophy in 1978. It was in John Williams’ final season that the former Everton and Welsh International goalkeeper, Neville Southall, was sold to Bury for £6,000. A sell on clause later netted United a club record figure of around £30,000 when he moved to Goodison Park. After that halcyon period, United’s fortunes again nose-dived. The Cheshire League merged with The Lancashire League to become The North West Counties League and the Northern Premier League formed a first division in 1987/8. The Blues were invited to join but they never really set the place on fire, seventh place being the best achieved. In January 1991, Winsford were bottom of the NPL First Division and facing a drop back down to the NWCFL. The club then pulled a masterstroke by appointing Mike McKenzie as team manager. They lost only four more games and avoided the drop. A piece of silverware was added when they beat Northwich Vics in the local cup final. In 1991/92 they gained promotion to the Premier Division, finishing as runners up and reaching the First Round of the FA Cup for only the third time in the club’s history. Season 1992/93 will go down in United’s folklore as ‘Macca’s’ men won an astonishing five trophies - the NPL Challenge Cup, NPL President’s Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup, Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup and NPL Runners Up Cup. The Blues finished second to Southport and their points total is a record for the most points accrued without winning the title. Sadly the team then broke up in the summer of 1993 when Mike McKenzie was lured into Conference football. Under the management of Dalton Steele, United finished seventh in the league and lifted the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. Season 1998 saw Steele leave for Chorley, taking nearly all the team with him; Mark Came took over and finished the season off with a makeshift side. The club received another tremendous boost early in 1999 when goalkeeper Andy Oakes who had signed for Hull City for a modest fee but with a 25% sell-on Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . Winsford United clause was signed by Derby County for £480,000 giving Winsford a record amount for a Non-League sell-on clause. Came took the regins for the 1999/2000 campaign but a run of poor results saw Kevin Tully put in the hot seat. What followed was the worst run of results in the club’s history and relegation for the first time. At the start of the 2000/2001 season in Unibond Division One Tully left, and Steve Shaughnessy was appointed Player/Manager. The team performed well throughout the season but administrative errors resulted in 6 points being deducted and instead of finishing in a mid-table spot they were relegated to The First Division of the North West Counties League. It took another 5 seasons before Winsford were able to start the long climb back. Unfortunately during that time they fell another step into NWCFL Division Two. The appointment of Dave Twite and a lot of hard work by the board saw a steady improvement in the fortunes of the club. When Dave left the club, Chris Wilcok replaced him. The 2005/06 season saw Chris and assistant manager John Flanagan led the team to the Division two title. However both Chris and John left the club during the close season to take over at Woodley Sports. Former Town manager Joe Gibiliru took over for the 2007/8 season and Winsford spent the majority of that term in the top half of the table before finishing in 10th position. They club secured some silverware when they won the MidCheshire Senior Cup defeating fellow Vodkat League, Division One outfit Congleton Town in the final, running out 2-1 winners with a late goal. Last term saw the Barton Stadium outfit struggle at the wrong end of the table and after survival was secured with a 20th position finish it was decided that the club would part company with manager Gibiliru, the club appointed Tony Ledwards as his successor for the 2009/10. With the club again struggling Ledwards left by mutual consent in March with a team of Mike Allcock and Dave Twite taking up the reigns. They steadied the ship as the club secured some excellent results to secure Premier Division football for Winsford United this term. They also steered the club to the League Challenge Cup Final including ending Town’s chances of silverware with a 1-0 victory at the Semi Final stage. They however turned in a disappointing performance when it mattered and fell to defeat at the hands of relegated Abbey Hey in the final. The start of this season saw the return of Chris Wilcock to the dugout at the Barton Stadium with former Town assistant manager Ian Street as his number two, the change has paid off with United having been in and around the top of the table since the start of the season.

Match Report Tuesday 16th November 2010 Liverpool Senior Cup Round 2 St Helens Town 3-2 Skelmersdale United Town advanced to the Quarter Final of the Liverpool Senior Cup with a victory over high flying UniBond Division One North Skelmersdale United at Edge Green Street this evening. Town were in the box seat early when Mike Kavanagh latched onto a through ball beating the offside trap and found himself one on one with former Town stopper Andy Paxton, Kavanagh attempted a lob which had the beating of the keeper who was outside his box and he handled the effort leaving the referee with no choice but to send him off for denying a goalscoring opportunity. From the free kick Peter Birch hot the target and Andy Mawdsley who had taken up the gloves parried the effort with Mike Fargher sending the rebound home. With the half hour mark approaching Town had failed to press home their numerical advantage and after the goal had not tested the stand in stopper. Kavanagh collected a though ball and forced Mawdsley into an unconvincing tip around the post on 31 minutes but United equalised on 35 minutes from a set piece. Paul Woolcott swung in a corner from the left wing and Steve Akrigg was afforded plenty of space to send his free header home on the far post. Aaron Turner did well down the left with the interval approaching and he found Ian Latham who somehow managed to shoot wide of the right hand post when it seemed easier to score. Ten minutes into the second half Town drew a free kick on the edge of the box and Liam Pearson’s effort went just over the bar with the keeper beaten. Town should have taken the lead just after the half hour mark when Birch released Pearson on the right and he advanced goalwards his effort from the right hand edge of the box flashed just wide of the left hand post. Moments later Kavanagh latched onto a long kick from Dale Newbrook and he read the bounce well but his shot on the stretch went over the bar. The visitors took the lead from another corner when Woolcott delivered and the ball was half cleared back to him he centred and Rob McIntosh connected with an attempted overhead kick to send the ball spectacularly home. Further Skem pressure saw Latham released on the left of the box and he would have doubled the advantage but for an excellent stop from Newbrook. Town threatened when Fargher linked with Stephens but his effort struck teammate Pearson and was cleared from danger. Town levelled the scores when Fargher collected a through ball and sent the ball past Mawdsley on the half volley with an exquisite finish and this pushed the game into an extra half an hour. The final incident of normal time saw a well timed challenge by Luke Faulkner on Latham see the questionable temperament of some of the visiting players come to the fore as usual skipper Turner who was lucky not to be sent off for kicking out at Fargher and attempting to headbutt Stephens in the second period was sent form the field for a foulmouthed tirade at the match officials meaning the Skelmersdale started extra time with nine men. It took until the final minute of the first added period for any noteworthy action as Che Morgan advanced down the left before cutting inside and unleashing a shot that Mawdsley did well to push off target. The Town pressure was beginning to tell as Pearson had an effort that broke to Stephens and his quick thinking with his back to goal saw him back-heel goalwards only for the stand in stopper to react well to block the effort. Another effort from Morgan saw the ball deflected behind for a corner and this was to be the telling incident as Stephens delivered from the right with Faulkner bravely heading goalwards under challenge from a defender who caught him on the nose as he headed the ball home rearranging his facial features in the process and he had to leave the field with a badly broken nose. The game became more stretched as United had to go all out in an attempt to level and Stephens had a good chance to put the game beyond doubt in the final minute of normal time in extra time when he countered but his attempted lob was well fielded by the keeper. Town held on through the five minutes of added on time for the injury to Faulkner and will host Tranmere Rovers in the Quarter Final. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right below) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club. Vodkat League News FA Vase Second Round - Eccleshill United 0 Runcorn Town 2 Runcorn Town's debut season in the FA Carlsberg Vase continues as they put in a convincing performance to beat KoolSport North East Counties Division One side Eccleshill United 2-0 in last night's Second Round tie. Runcorn went at their hosts from the start with Warren Bellew delivering a couple of quality crosses from the left hand side and Marvin Molyneux and Ste Latham both seeing shots deflected for corners. Tony Wynne went closest after 18 minutes when he raced onto Karl Wills' long clearance but failed to connect properly with his shot when well placed. Their defence was magnificent, limiting the hosts to just two long range efforts in the first half that goalkeeper Karl Wills saved easily, but they were rocked after 21 minutes when Danny Dalton went over on his ankle - Runcorn's right back hobbling around for another 15 minutes before being replaced by Chris Brown. The inevitable goal after so much Runcorn pressure arrived after 29 minutes after Tony Wynne was felled in the box by a defender, with James McShane converting the penalty with confidence. Bellew also saw an effort deflected wide for a corner with Emini Adegbenro also going close with a shot across goal as Runcorn closed out a half in which they dominated. Whatever is in the half time tea in Yorkshire had an effect, with the second half much different from the first as the home side were on top for long periods. However, they failed to create any clear cut chances in the final third of the pitch with Wills largely untested apart from a couple of crosses he had to deal with. As the game progressed, Runcorn looked dangerous on the counter attack with Adegbenro twice shooting wide when well placed after being played in by Molyneux and substitute Connor Anderson respectively. Leading scorer McShane had the best effort of the lot when he got clear of the defence after chasing down a clearance, but with just Bell to beat he lobbed the ball wide of the goal. As the game entered the final five minutes, Eccleshill went for broke which in turn left space at the back. McShane should have doubled the lead when he controlled a cross from Anderson ball in the box before hitting the left hand post with a shot, with his effort rolling across the line before being gathered by Bell. However McShane did make the game safe as the clock ticked into the 90th minute after he broke clear of the defence from Chris Brown's through ball and slotted past the keeper for his 17th goal of the season. Tony Riley, Runcorn Town Chairman, said after the game: "It was a great team performance. I thought we dominated the first half and could have been 3-0 up with more accurate finishing. The second half however was dominated by Eccleshill, but good defensive play denied them any real chances. In the final minutes we scored the second goal to seal the tie. Our amazing first season in the Vodkat League continues, and the FA Vase run so far has surpassed all our expectations. My thanks go out to (manager) Simon Burton and the squad, not to mention the committee, for their hard work and enthusiasm so far." Martin Fallon, Runcorn Town Secretary, supported that view: "It was a strange game to watch in all honesty, going from having so much play and so many chances in the first half to a 'backs to the wall' job in the second half. Having scored 50 goals so far this season, it is usually the midfield and attack that get the plaudits, but the defence deserve enormous credit as they were superb last night. Eccleshill were on top for long periods but I cannot remember a single clear cut shot on target all night"."We have yet another away trip in the Third Round at Gornal Athletic. They are from the West Midlands Regional League, and they look like they are having a good season lying second in their league. However if we can continue our good form and players perform as they can do, it should be a good game and we can hopefully continue our progression in our first season in the Vase." Win a Brand New Toyota Aygo with St Helens Town . . . St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. We will be looking at a range of activities to ensure we both benefit from the partnership – with the ‘Win-a-Toyota-Car’ project hopefully proving to be a successful start.’ The club have 200 sponsorship packages available at £100 each which will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to win the car. In addition, sponsor details will be added to a ‘roll-of-honour’ in the club’s printed and on-line matchday programme and sponsors will have their details added to the official club website. All participants will receive a signed commemorative certificate and will be entered in to the draw for the car which will be made in March/April 2011 or as soon as all 200 packages have been sold. Martin Blondel, Secretary of The Steve Prescott Foundation said, ‘We’re always on the look-out for new fundraising ideas and when St Helens Town approached us we were delighted with their offer. We are looking forward to working alongside the Football Club and hope to raise a lot of money for the two charities we support the Christie Cancer Hospital & the Try Assist Fund’ For further information, or to purchase a sponsorship package please contact Andy Langley on 07850740894. Vodkat League News Premier Division Goalkeeper Of The Month Presentation Richie Mottram of Winsford United won the Premier Division Paxsport Goalkeeper of the Month Award in October. Richie is without doubt one of the best goalkeepers at this level. This has been shown in his recent performances when, apart from the defeat at Congleton when he sustained a movement restricting injury early in the game, he has instilled great confidence in the defence. Just four goals conceded in the other seven games during the month of October is evidence of this, and he contributed to a fine run of form that saw Winsford win six, draw one and lose one of theior eight games during the month. He was presented with the award by League Secretary John Deal (pictured right) prior to his side's game against Ashton Athletic. Premier Division Player Of The Month Award Presentation It was a double for Winsford as Liam Newman won the Vodkat League Premier Division Player Of The Month Award for October. The 18-year-old striker has been a revelation since signing for the club at the beginning of the month. Playing with a maturity far beyond his years he has shown he only needs the slightest chance before showing his goal-scoring capabilities. Six goals in eight games proves his ability and has been a major factor in taking the club to second place in the league, and there is undoubtedly a lot more to come from this promising young player. He was also presented with his award prior to his side's game at home to Ashton Athletic, this time by League Development Officer Geoff Wilkinson Vodkat League Landmarks - W/E 13th November 2010 Just the one league landmark to report this week - Ashton Athletic's 5-1 defeat at Winsford United was their 300th game in the league.

St Helens Town News . . . Toyota Helping Town’s Drive for Success St Helens Town Football Club is delighted to announce that Johnsons Toyota Liverpool will become the club’s main sponsor for the forthcoming season and this will see the company’s Toyota brand emblazoned on the new Town kit throughout 2010-11. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘I am delighted that we’ve been able to develop our partnership with Johnsons and this builds upon the great support they offered St Helens Town throughout last season’. Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, the Bootle based car dealership, were initially the club’s Executive Programme Sponsors for season 2009-10 and extended their support courtesy of a number of match and match ball sponsorships along with the provision of a branded car which formed part of the club’s Player of the Month awards. Johnsons were also extremely generous in their support of Town’s Bert Trautmann anniversary celebrations in November 2009. John McKiernan said, ‘We worked extremely hard to generate a huge amount of sponsorship last season and gave considerable coverage to a large number of new sponsors via our printed and online matchday programmes, club website and matchday activities. We are hopeful that last year’s efforts will provide a firm foundation for future seasons. “Johnsons Toyota Liverpool have given the club a record breaking financial boost during tough economic times and we feel that it is in part a recognition that St Helens Town can play a leading role in promoting their brand across the North West.’ He added, ‘Johnsons will be undertaking a number of promotional events and product placement activities across St Helens during the coming year and St Helens Town will be prominent throughout these. It’s a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of the club prior to our arrival at the new stadium in August 2011!’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons Toyota Liverpool said, ‘Our work with St Helens Town last season proved an ideal opportunity to expand our brand across Merseyside and we are looking forward to developing and extending our partnership so that both ourselves and the club will continue to see significant benefits’. He added, ‘We have some exciting plans for the coming season which will raise the club’s profile along with additional sponsorship monies.’ Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

In Other News . . . Star striker extends contract while "Pink Game" receives further backing Glapwell have received a welcome double boost today, with matters on and off the field affected. The club's planned “Pink Game” in support of Breast Cancer Care has shifted up a gear thanks to Steve and Jacquie Fairbrother from A Purfect Stretch. The couple who run a Luxury Limousine hire company has offered a prize of an hour’s drive for eight people with champagne to help Glapwell FC and Lambs at the Market to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care. The ride in the bright pink Hummer will be offered as part of a prize raffle that will be drawn at the Pink Game, when Glapwell FC take on Leek Town at Field Mill on the 27th of November. Local businesses have stepped in to sponsor each of the Glapwell FC’s players’ bring pink shirts which they will wear for the game. These will be auctioned off after the game. The support we have received from local businesses has been fantastic. We have cut the admission price to just £2 to attract more people to the game in the hope they will make more donations,” said Glapwell FC Marketing Manager, Graham Parker. Meanwhile, star striker Ian Holmes has signed a contract with the club until the end of the season. Holmes is currently the leading scorer in Evostick First Division South with 19 goals. Holmes has enjoyed spells with Mansfield Town, Matlock Town, AFC Telford and Eastwood Town before joining Glapwell. “We’re delighted to retain Ian’s services till the end of this season. He is the in-form striker in the division at the moment and we fully expect him to bag 30 goals for us during the campaign,” said Glapwell Football Club Assistant Manager, Kevin Gee.

Around The Grounds The Town Ground - Alsager Town A second trip of the season to Alsager Town’s Town Ground was our fate in the Vodkat League Challenge Cup 2nd Round draw and the opportunity to avenge an opening day defeat. The ground itself is quite unusual in terms of Vodkat League grounds as on approach through a housing estate an initial thought is that you have taken a wrong turning as there appears to be no sign of the Bullets home ground. In the top right hand corner of the close there is an opening just about wide enough to get a car through which opens out with the clubs base in front of you. Another striking element of the set up is as you drive through the gates the clubhouse building and dressing rooms are off to your right and the ground falls away in front of you sloping down into what can only be described as a bowl with the pitch and surrounding stands being several feet below the entry height of the turnstiles. The pitch is surrounded by post and rail and hard standing around its perimeter and the first stand is on your nearside as you approach from the entrance and this is spilt in half with standing in left hand side and seating to the right. The area behind both goals is uncovered and the only other cover in the ground is on the far side opposite the afore mentioned stand, this time being covered terracing. The club house is basic and always cold on this visit it appeared to be warmer outside! The hospitality facilities have been improved and on this visit a portakabin behind the right hand goal was utilised for our half time warming cup of tea. For a former Northern Premier League ground this falls well below what you would expect and this is reflected in the score below.
Overall Score 5/10

All Our Yesterdays . . . Having earlier this season played our last fixture at Knowsley Road, it is opportune to look back on the various grounds used by the club. The original St. Helens Town played their home games on the Primrose Ground, Park Road. The ground was used in later years as a greyhound track and survived until the 1980s, when it was demolished and replaced with Social Services facilities and re-named Mulcrow Close. The headquarters of the club were the Black Horse Hotel, Park Road, until the club closed down in 1928. When the club was re-formed after the Second World War, its patrons purchased the site of the former Sutton Cricket Club, later used as allotments, at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station. The headquarters were, for a time, the Junction Inn, which still stands. The club used what became known as the Town Ground from 1947 until 2000, when title was transferred to Sporting Club St. Helens Limited, the organisation which became the parent company of St. Helens Rugby Football Club Limited and St. Helens Town Limited. The ground was eventually sold for housing and the substantial sale proceeds were placed at the disposal of Sporting Club St. Helens and put towards the acquisition and building costs of the new St. Helens stadium, which is currently taking shape on the Link Road and which is due for completion in around 12 months’ time. During the intervening period, of course, Town will share Ashton Town’s facilities at Edge Green Street, whilst the Saints will groundshare at Widnes. Town’s ground at Hoghton Road opened for Liverpool County Combination Football on 30th August 1947 when around 2000 spectators saw Town and Newton YMCA fight out a 1-1 draw. The following season, on 9th October 1948, a ground record of 3012 witnessed the game with Burscough, although a larger crowd assembled for the friendly with Manchester City in April 1950, generally quoted at 4000. The Hoghton Road ground was built from scratch, first of all was the erection of the pavilion. By November 1949, with Town in the Lancashire Combination, the ground had seated accommodation for 250 and cover for over 1300 standing spectators and a small clubhouse was built in 1958, incorporating an office and dressing-rooms. A social club with room for 200 customers appeared in 1962, extended twice to accommodate over 700 by 1977 and floodlights were installed in 1988, following Town’s success in the FA Vase Final at Wembley in 1987. A friendly match against Everton was the first game under Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . Town Grounds 1946 the lights on 25th October 1988. Between 1990 and 1994, Town shared the ground with Runcorn Highfield (later Highfield) Rugby League club. Town’s last match at Hoghton Road was against Vauxhall Motors on 29th April 2000. In November 1952, Town moved their operation to City Road, which they shared with Pilkingtons Recreation. City Road was the former ground of St. Helens Recs. Rugby League Club and the ground had previously been used for football when the Recs. fielded an association side between 1898 and 1913. Recs. Rugby League ran from 1913 as an amateur club and between the Wars, they played as a professional club in the Northern Union and Rugby Football League, often more successfully than Saints. The parent club pulled the funding at the end of the 1938/39 season and the ground was unused during the War. Town played there before some encouraging crowds before relocating to Hoghton Road in October 1953. Town’s first game at City Road was a Liverpool Senior Cup tie against Stonycroft (which Town won 8-1) on 29th November 1952 and the final game was a 4-0 league win against Prescot Cables on 10th October 1953. Knowsley Road has been used for North West Counties Football for the last 10 seasons. The first game was against Skelmersdale United on 23rd August 2000, the final game being the FA Cup Preliminary Round tie against Glossop North End on 28th August 2010. On occasions when the stadium has not been available, Town have used various other local grounds, notably Prescot Cables for league games and holding some friendly games at Ashton Town and Bobbies Lane, Eccleston. This season has seen two FA Vase matches played at Alder House, the home of Atherton Collieries. The record crowd at Knowsley Road was the 1723 attendance for the visit of FC United of Manchester on 12th August 2006. GLYN JONES

A look back at Hoghton Road 1946 A consortium of Sutton businessmen led by Mr George Fryer purchased the one time Sutton Cricket Club site from Pilkington Brothers, to re-form St Helens Town AFC. Extensive work is required to re-cultivate the pitch whilst essential buildings are erected from timber supplied by the local collieries. 1948 Supporters Club secure their own premises with the purchase of a timber building from RAF Haydock, which also acts as a refreshment bar. 1949 Supporters raise money to build a grandstand at a cost of ÂŁ1000 whilst residue of the money is put into further development. Construction is subject to struct new legislation enforced by the close vicinity of the railway and concern for public safety following the pre-war disaster at Burnden Park, Bolton. hence a heavy duty concrete structure is specified. 1953 The whole estate is put up for sale whilst the team play home games at Pilkington's City Road ground. 1954 The sale is withdrawn due to pressure group led by Mr George Fryer. 1958 Small clubhouse incorporating officials dressing rooms and an office is erected. 1962 New 200 seater club is built on top of the training pitch. Burnley's ex-St Helens Town star John Connelly performs the opening ceremony. 1966 The club is extended, incorporating dressing rooms and a lounge area. 1972 Further extension of the club includes the relocation of both dressing rooms and stage. Liverpool's Ian St. John performs the opening ceremony.
1978 The ground is completely walled in. 1982 Final phase of the club development is completed with a new roof and new toilet blocks. Covered accommodation built at the Hoghton Road end of the ground to enclose the refreshment bar. Sauna sold off. 1983 Elevated Director's box built over looking the pitch at the Hoghton Road end of the ground. 1984 New players' entrance constructed. 1988 Floodlighting system installed after months of fund-raising. Everton send a strong side to officially open the lights. Salford City are the first team to play Town under floodlights at Hoghton Road. 1990 Runcorn Highfield Rugby League Football Club outfit become tenants at Hoghton Road. 1994 Runcorn Highfield RLFC move to Prescot Cables and St Helens Greyhound Company join Town as tenants. Significant changes are made to the Hoghton Road ground as a new track is laid around the pitch. 1995 Players' entrance 'caged-in' as part of new FA ground Grading requirements. 1996 Floodlighting system upgraded and a new exterior wall is erected. Dressing rooms are upgraded. The ground is used as a location for an episode of the BBC hit comedy/drama series 'Common As Muck' 2000 The final game is played on Hoghton Road when Champions elect are beaten 1-0. St Helens Town relocate to Saints' Knowsley Road and the land is sold to Barratt Homes.
1977 A new lounge is added plus a sauna build into the new dressing room block which also houses a new games and snooker facility. A running tack is laid around the pitch. Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Saint’s Alive . . . A man goes into a pet shop to buy a parrot. The shop owner points to three identical-looking birds on a perch and says, “The parrot on the left is five hundred pounds. It can talk and answer the telephone.” The man is quite impressed, but asks if the other two parrots cost as much as the first. “Actually, that’s the cheapest,” says the shop owner. “The one in the middle is one thousand pounds. It can do the same as the first, but can also operate a computer and send emails.” Even more intrigued, the man asks about the third parrot. “Well,” says the shop owner, “that one will cost two thousand pounds.” “Goodness me!” exclaims the man. “What can that one do?” The shop owner chuckles. “To be honest, I’ve never seen it do a thing,” he admits. “But the other two call it Boss!” Walking along a beach, a man finds a bottle. He picks it up, rubs it, and a genie appears. “I’ll grant you three wishes, but there’s one condition,” says the genie. “I’m a lawyers’ genie, so for every wish you make all the lawyers in the world get the same, but double.” “I can cope with that,” says the man, cheerily. “For my first wish, I’d like £10 million.” “That means that all the world’s lawyers will get £20 million,” the genie reminds him. “No problem,” says the man, chuckling. “Second wish; I’d love to have a red sports car.” “Okay, and two for every lawyer,” says the genie. “Now, what is your final wish?” “Well,” replies the man, with a smile. “I’ve always wanted to donate one of my kidneys.” An irate customer marches into a shop and demands a refund for the alarm clock he had bought the week before because he’s being woken up every morning by streams of abuse. “Well, what else did you expect from it?” asks the shop assistant. “It’s a wind-up clock!” A man goes on holiday to the Holy Land with his wife and mother-in-law. A few days into the vacation his mother-in-law suffers a fatal heart attack, so he contacts the local undertaker who explains that they can ship the body home, but it will cost over £5000. The other option is to bury her in the Holy Land, which can be done for a mere £150. “Oh, we’ll definitely ship her home for burial,” says the son-in-law, without hesitation. “Are you quite sure about that?” queries the undertaker. “It’s an awfully large expense.” “Look,” says the son-in-law, earnestly. “Two thousand years ago they buried a bloke round here, and three days later he rose from the dead. I can’t afford to take that chance!” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd. If you have any printable jokes you would like to share with your fellow supporters, please e-mail them to me on john@behindtheflag.co.uk Come on, let’s all have a laugh.
