No. 01 February 2015
OSA Committee members give an enormous amount of time to the Association voluntarily. Thanks to their input, we are improving member benefits and running events for all to enjoy throughout the year. I encourage you to visit the School website (www.sthildas.wa.edu.au) for the committee listing and contact committee members with your suggestions. Please let me know if you would like to become more actively involved on the committee yourself. There are many opportunities that call for a variety of skills.
Welcome and very best wishes to you all for the New Year. In particular the OSA welcomes St Hilda’s 12th Principal, Mrs Kim Kiepe, and our newest Old Scholar members, the Class 2014. All Old Scholars are invited to a special event to greet Kim and I eagerly encourage you to refer to the following page for details. We bound into 2015 full of enthusiasm and excitement with a Calendar of Events already in place for the coming 12 months. Our traditional events such as the annual Bazaar and 70+ Morning Tea once again feature as crowd favourites, while momentum continues to build for activities such as the Mentoring Morning and Social Golf Day amongst others. On behalf of the OSA Committee I would like to congratulate the recent School graduates on their academic (ATAR) and Vocational(VET) results. Each girl (and her family) must be applauded for their perseverance through the tough times and their aspirations to succeed through dedicated effort. Congratulations and well done. The Valedictory Dinner that concludes Year 12 provides an important opportunity to thank our incoming Financial Life Members for their support of the Association. Thank you to the families who recognise the value of this membership and encourage their daughters to remain connected through the School alumni. This support allows us to strengthen our services and ‘give back’ to the School for the benefit of current students.
L to R: Angela Heaton (Mitchell, ’75) welcoming Michele Gould to the OSA at the 2014 Valedictory dinner.
Each year we recognise the outstanding input of staff who have provided service to the School for over 20 years, or have provided exceptional service during their tenure at St Hilda’s. We recognise their loyal service by extending Honorary Life Membership to the OSA and last year proudly welcomed: Mrs Joy Shepherd former Principal Mrs Julie Quan-Sing Rowlands former Head of Junior School Mr Steve Latawski English Mrs Judy Christopher Library and Mrs Rita Charles Junior School teacher I would also like to take this opportunity to extend our most grateful thanks to Denise Stransky (Lodge, ’74) who retired last year after a respected and valuable long term on the OSA Committee and School Council.
Denise Stransky (Lodge, ‘74)
Our Association endeavours to celebrate achievements, rejoice in news of marriages and births and be considerate and empathetic to our members who may not have had such happy times during the year. Our common thread is that we all went to the same School, and because of this bond, we care for each other. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all well for 2015 and do hope to see many of you during the year. Angela Heaton (Mitchell, ’75)

TRAVEL AWARD
DIANA WARNOCK Jessica Watts (’07) was the successful applicant of the 2014 OSA Travel Award and will use the opportunity to pursue research in Ethiopia where human trafficking, forced labour and child marriage is common. Jessica intends to profile students from The School of St Yared, where some of Ethiopia’s poorest children are educated, and document how tuition is changing the trajectory of these young lives. Jessica’s work will provide insight into modern slavery and the significance of empowering individuals through education. We wish you well Jessica and look forward to learning more about your project as you progress. The Travel Award, an initiative of the OSA Centenary year in 2013, will be extended to OSA Financial members again this year, for travel in 2016-2017.
Jessica Watts, recipient of the 2014 OSA Travel Award

MENTORING MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Diana Warnock (Robinson, ‘57) has been awarded and OAM in the 2015 Australia Day Honours for service to the community and the parliament of Western Australia. Prior to her retirement in 2001, Diana was elected President of the State Parliamentary Labor Party and in 1993 was elected State Member for Perth. A former journalist, Diana was for many years an activist on behalf of women and minority groups, seeking justice and equal rights. She is presently a member, patron and board member of numerous community groups and braves the ocean water for a daily swim. Congratulations Diana on your achievements and well deserved recognition for extraordinary effort.
FEELING LOST WHEN IT COMES TO USING COMPUTERS? Learning to navigate your way through jargon and foreign technicalities can be incredibly testing and the best way to master the process is to have somebody sitting next to you, patiently showing you the way. Collaboration between St Hilda’s and the local councils of Mosman Park, Cottesloe, Claremont and Peppermint Grove has resulted in a program of free Intergenerational Internet Classes, to build confidence in computer use and positively link generations in the community. The internet classes are open to those who would like to learn more about basic internet functions and how to use online banking, send and receive emails, open photographs and attachments, download pictures, attach files to an email and pay bills online. Old Scholars who would like to share their career experience with students in Years 11 and 12 are encouraged to join the OSA Mentoring Program on Monday 22 June, over a two hour period. Small groups, defined by industry, allow students to discuss employment options, workplace conditions and career expectations in an interactive forum.
You can inspire current students with your own story of career advancement and encourage students to reach their potential through a variety of pathways. To express your interest as a Mentor please contact Anu van Hattem anuvanhattem@gmail.com
Every participant is partnered with a student who will work with them on a one to one basis, while a facilitator will oversee the workshop. For further information or to register your interest to take part in the next class, please contact the Alumni Officer deborah.hill@sthildas.wa.edu.au or call 9285 4246.

WA INDEPENDENT GIRLS’ SCHOOL’S ALUMNI UNITE
MAGNA CARTA COMMEMORATION
The Alumni of seven of Perth’s Independent Girls’ schools will unite in March 2015 to recognise and celebrate the advancement of women in WA. You are invited to socialise, network and engage with your female peers in the relaxed setting of The Boulevard Hotel’s Lounge.
On 15 June 1215 King John signed a treaty with his barons: Magna Carta.
The Alumni Associations of Methodist Ladies’ College, Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Penrhos College, Perth College, Santa Maria College, St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School and St Hilda’s Anglican School have joined forces to host this inaugural event to create a supportive, collegiate environment for women.
St George’s Cathedral will mark the 800th anniversary of the charter with a commemoration on the Eve of the Signing.
The principles enshrined therein have had lasting significance on the constitutions of every nation which uses a Westminster system of government, including Australia.
You are invited to join this special occasion and the reception to follow. Please refer to the event calendar for details.
Please refer to the booking details on the Event calendar and respond by following the online booking link.
YEAR REPRESENTATIVES Year Representatives are an important link between members of their cohort, the School and the OSA. Do you know who your Year Rep is? Typically one or two Old Scholars represent their Year and are a central point of contact for the exchange of information. From time to time Year Representatives change and hopefully those who take on the role find it a fun and rewarding way to keep in touch and up to date. We’ll be in contact with Year Representatives soon to reinforce just how special you are and invite your input to the OSA. For further information about Year Representatives please contact the Alumni Officer, Deborah Hill, Deborah.hill@sthildas.wa.edu.au
PLEASE SHARE YOUR EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENTS WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OFFICE The OSA loves to receive notice of special achievements, business success, media coverage and more. Your friends will delight in seeing your name, your colleagues will be proud and the St Hilda’s teaching staff will enjoy following your interests and career highlights.

60 YEAR REUNION, Class of 1954, 2014 Twenty-seven Old Scholars from the class of 1954, joined by three former sports mistresses, celebrated a spirited 60-year reunion at the School on October 18, 2014. The day began with a service in the Chapel, a welcome from Year Representative Valerie Lapinski (James) and readings from four others. Valerie also read out the names of those no longer with us. Morning tea followed in Miss Mitchell’s sitting room, with delicious cake and biscuits made by Cynda Van Der Struyf (Joel.) A tour of the School was followed by lunch in The Gallery, where tables were decorated with rose arrangements by
Sue Roche (Rowan) and Jill Cowan (Bagshaw). Prim Davy - representing the boarders - and Errol Broome (Moss) - day girls - cut the reunion cake, followed by Jill House (Barber) who gave a spontaneous and applauded vote of thanks to Valerie, Cynda and
Dale Heenan (Venn). The afternoon extended into the evening at Valerie and Lee’s home a few streets away. Errol Broome
10 YEAR REUNION, Class of 2004, 2014 The 10 Year Reunion was held on 20 December 2014 at Steve’s Fine Wine and Food. The event was a huge success with 65 girls from our year group attending including many who are currently living overseas/interstate and who were back for the holiday period. The afternoon and evening was filled with laugher, memories, updates including girls claiming to have invented Post-its and the Selfie Stick (thanks to the Romy and Michele themed invitation) and everyone wondering where 10 years had gone. A big thank you to those who helped to organise the event and for everyone who attended. We missed those who were unable to attend but are looking forward to seeing you at the 20 year reunion, if not before. Amy McKerracher
20 YEAR REUNION, Class of 1994, 2014 Many of the girls arrived feeling a little nervous and with a bit of trepidation but by the end of the night, they left having had a great night connecting with old friends. Many of the girls commented to me about how amazing the School is looking and that they really enjoyed the tour. The golf club was a great back drop to a beautiful night with the sweeping views of the river. Stephanie, the caterer, served a delicious menu for the night, as did The Little Bakery with their melt in the mouth yellow and blue cupcakes. A total of 64 girls attended the reunion and
L-R: Claire Hamersley, Ruth Manton (Walker), Pippa Bell and Chloe Wilke (Crawford)
we ended up extending the bar hire for an extra 30 minutes, we didn’t want to go home! A few of us cut up the dance floor, dancing the night away to a mix of music from our high school years. It was great to see so many girls attend and to have so many well wishes from
L-R: Felicity Zimmerman, Rebecca Duane (Carter), Sally Reading (Grove), Miranda Renwick (Edmonds) and Marcia Metcalf (Thomas)
those that couldn’t attend. We surely did miss those that couldn’t make it. The whole night epitomised the saying we wrote on the invite… “a new friend is valuable, an old friend is priceless.” Amanda Fernihough
