the

oceanfront

communit y

of

S eabrook Island. The Proper t y O wners Associ -

a tion asked us to update the planting throughout the entire de velopment and to design an in tegr ated walking tr ail sy stem. The P.O.A. also

desired a ne w entr y exper ience that would en hance t he ne w additions to the proper t y. The

final de sign c al ls f or a ser ies of nodes connect-

ed by o rganic cr ushed gr avel paths. Eac h node

pro vides sitting areas, fire pits and picnic areas f or residents to enjoy vie ws to the surround-

ing Ocean W inds Gold Course and the unique natur al beaut y of the barr ier island. The de sign succeeds in enc our aging social inter action a mong neighbors by pro viding common gather ing areas f or al l to utiliz e.

Charleston, SC oper Cancer Center c ame to Byers Design Group asking us to design a special out -

door cour t yard and garden f or patients that are c urrentl y going through c hemother apy treat ments. The treatments c an be long and dr awn

out, keeping patients in bed f or hours at a time. The intent of the design was to pro vide visual

and sensual ther apy to the patients while the y undergo treatment. The large windows of the

c enter give them panor amic vie ws of the garden. S pecial wind sculptures wil l c apture bree z es and gentl y flow up and down with the air, pro viding

great visual interest. P lants were c hosen based on their aromas and colors. The cour t yard also pro vides an area f or visitors to go outside with the patients and enjoy the outdoors. A water sculpture in the center of the cour t yard provides a soothing aud ible texture to the design.

THE LINDEN RESIDENCE

A

Charleston, SC couple in the c har ming cit y of Char leston

w as looking to mimic the cit y's histor i c

f or mal gardens and cour t yards within their own residential landsc ape. The y have a smal l cot -

tage st y le home and had a limited amount of proper t y with whic h to work. The goal of this

residential design was to maximaz e the space around their home and pro vide a sequence of

f or mal and inf or mal areas that the y could enjoy

year round. An ne w f or mal entr y to the house was designed and an organic br ic k path takes you through plantings with a var iet y of tex -

tures, colors and scents. The path ter minates at a f or mal lawn. The bac k of the proper t y pro vid-

ed the per f ect area f or a nice outdoor kitc hen, patio and fire pit. A reflecting pool was added to pro vide a f oc al point and visual interest.

Al Ain, U.A.E. l Ain W ild lif e Park and Resor t is loc ated in the cit y of Al Ain, approximatel y 70

miles southeast of D ubai. Eac h of the three sa-

far i exper iences—Asian, Ar abian and Afr ic an— f eatures animals and habitats unique to those

geogr aphic regions. The 890-hectare site wil l also have residential communities, t wo resor ts

and retail and commercial spaces that complement the deser t landsc ape. Parks, gardens, play

areas and educ ational facilities fur ther enhance the de velopment.

showc ase my penc hant f or residential design. Competitors were asked to design a ful l y functional outdoor kitc hen. The peaceful, expansive marshes of the S outh Carolina L owcountr y

pro vide an unr ivaled bac kdrop and inspir ation f or this al l-inc lusive outdoor kitc hen and en-

ter taining space. O wners and guests wil l apprec iate the sensible layout of the cooking areas

and bar. Retr actable screens, seating areas of var ious siz es, a game room, fire pit and vie ws

phasis on unique retail, dining and socializin g

have to off er. The pedestr ian-fr iend l y layout takes advantage of the existing lake and its beautiful vie ws with walking paths, parks and a

ENCORE DEVELOPMENT

Jacksonville, FL nc ore is a proposed mixed-use de velopment loc ated in O r lando, F lor ida. This

concept was the pinnac le of a three-day student design competition held by Ur ban Resource Group, a division of Kimle y-Hor n & Associa tes. URG outlined the building progr am and

kept project cr iter ia to a minimum, encour aging

the teams to stretc h their design imaginations. Three other teammates and my self incor por ated

the theme of inter action with water to create the hear t of Encore—a gr and water f eature that

leads up to the state-of-the-ar t five-star hotel. Around the water f eature visitors wil l find re-

tail and dining oppor tunities as wel l as areas f or active and passive recreation.

Athens, GA har les Holmes Her t y coac hed the Universit y of Georgia Bul ldogs in their first

f oot bal l game e ver, played on a Nor th Campus field now dubbed Her t y F ield in his honor. This

design f eatures sec luded seating and study ing

areas that re vitaliz e the space while the f or -

mal me mor ial plaz a pay s homage to the past. A large rectangular lawn and gr assy amphithe-

ater-like seating on either end are reminiscent of the or iginal Her t y F ield bleac hers and are useful f or a var iet y of activities.

O

r iginal l y from Atlanta, GA, S hea T ighe gr aduated from the Universit y of Geor -

gia with a Bac helor of L andsc ape Arc hitecture in May of 2008. He joined Edward D. S ton e

& Asso ciates later that month mo ved to For t L auderdale, FL. W h ile at EDSA, T ighe gained valuable exper ience in land planning, project management and d esign. Understanding the impor tance of sustainable design, T ighe bec ame a LEED accredited prof essional in 2009.

T ighe reloc ated to Char leston, SC in

2010. Currentl y he is the Marketing Coordinator f or S eabrook Island, a pr ivate oceanfront resor t communit y outside of Char leston.
