It’s Getting Bigger

As we are about to launch the second year of the Stagg Awards, we give you this special issue of „STiG to focus on this annual event designed to appreciate Filipino musicians. The 2011 Stagg Awards is a big leap from its debut last year. Starting from a hundred initial nominees, we increase this year‟s viable candidates and select more than 150 musicians covering many music genres. Each category is also now divided into Mainstream and Indie, giving better chances and recognition to the independent musicians. Likewise, we have added other awards like the Multi-Instruments Award, Icon Award, and People‟s Choice Band of the Year, giving this event a wider reach. The selection process has also been improved starting with an initial Mass Voting that will determine the Top 10 nominees from each category. Thereafter, the tally is leveled and moves to the Industry Voting. This closed Facebook group currently now has more than 100 members composed of active musicians, record label executives, band managers, bar owners, music store proprietors, and other music personalities. With these in place, both sides of the voting spectrum are properly represented that will enable us to conclude the rightful winners. It is not just a popularity contest anymore. The final nominees need the approval of the industry for any of them to be declared Most Liked. The Stagg Awards is also fortunate to partner with Colt45 as its co-presenter. Not only that, we have Tribal Gear as our Major Sponsor and a number of media outfits to help us spread the word: magazines Pulp, Uno, and Bands; radio stations Jam88.3, Magic 89.9, 99.5RT, and Crossover 105.1; and online streaming partner, Digradio.ph. With all of these in place, let your choices be counted and vote for your favorite players by visiting http://themusicsource.ph. Then join us as we celebrate Filipino musicianship on the finals night at the Music Museum on November 10. It‟s time to go big time!

MAPEX FALCON SINGLE PEDAL Rating: 4 ½ out of 5 Verdict: The best single pedal I’ve played with so far

I‟ve been playing drums since I was a kid and most people tend to ask me how come I never use double-pedals. Well, I‟ve never really gotten into it. Maybe because I love playing fast punk rock music ever since and there‟s no use for a double pedal. It has always been a big deal for me when it comes to buying a drum pedal. Before, I really don‟t like to get a brand new one mainly because it will just be a rough stage to get the feel of it. Then Stagg hooked me up with this lovely Falcon Single Pedal from Mapex. I‟ve never been so happy in playing drums. Honestly, my first impression is that the pedal looks so sexy with the sleek design of the black metal parts liking to a car paint finish. This pedal has several innovations and plenty of adjustments but it manages to feel effortless, light, smooth and very silent in action. The spring tension is PERFECT out of the box and for me that is a big thing as I needed to tighten up all my springs on my previous pedals. Most pedals are really complicated when it has your typical “assemble-it” factor. The first thing I thought when I saw the Falcon was, “Hey, it‟s like a Transformer toy!” But this is rather heavy for a toy than the usual pedal which, personally, doesn‟t matter to me. The slim footboard is an amazing installment. I can pull my toes half-way down the board and still feel the stomping power to make me play even faster than the usual. The hinged heel plate has these sealed steel bearings which eliminate drastic lateral movements when rocking out. That‟s definitely a plus for all drummers. You don‟t really want to have your pedals going to random directions when you perform. Falcon is a “Suregrip.” The double chains are amazing, I always wanted to have that - but the Velcro (optional) strip is even nicer. It just gave the pedal a brand new identity. After using this lovely Falcon from Mapex at several rock shows, I‟d say that this is, by far, the best pedal I have ever played on.

Pros: Spring tension, addition of the slim footboard and hinged heel plate, a ‘suregrip’ Cons: Heavier than usual

Junji Lerma Guitarist Teacher Arranger Gear Geak

1. iPhone 3GS - Although there was a 4th version and a 5th one to be released soon, I‟m still quite content with my 3GS. It has all the things I need in one device: a phone, camera, calendar, an iPod, among others. The cool apps and games also keep me entertained and occupied during waiting time. It‟s an indispensable tool in my daily life.

2. Ableton Live 8 - My friend, Malek Lopez, introduced me to this software program and I found it so easy to use. It‟s a powerful music tool which allows me to work at home and in my own time to track guitar parts or capture sketches right away.

3. “Stevie” - 1978 Fender Stratocaster - I love the tone, playability and versatility of the Strat. I‟ve used it extensively with my work over the years with Radioactive Sago Project, Maestro Ryan Cayabyab and now with Hijo.

4. IBANEZ TS-9 Tubescreamer - It has a great warm sound; musical and retains the quality of the guitar‟s original character in any drive setting. That‟s why this sick green box has been a favorite of guitar players since its inception in the 1970‟s and the reason why it‟s not leaving my board.

5. Stagg Flying V - The guitar has some funky wood that guitar maker Max Rufo perfected with some modifications. I‟m enjoying its sound offered in a reasonable price.

Being in the music industry for many years, Junji Lerma has had an extensive experience in playing live. He graduated with a Certificate of Music from U.P. College of Music, Major in Classical Guitar. Aside from playing guitar for Radioactive Sago Project and Hijo, Junji is also a faculty member at the Music School of Ryan Cayabyab and has recorded and toured with his group: The RCS (Ryan Cayabyab Singers).
