Tips to conserve water at your home or business By Ed Del Grande Tribune News Service

ADS IN BRIEF 78¢ a word, 10 word minimum, maximum 6 ads for individual/business per day

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, May 29, 2015

Q: Dear Ed: Thank you for your recent media tour throughout Southern California on educating homeowners about the importance of installing watersaving plumbing fixtures. Is it possible for you to remind all your readers across the country about this important issue? I feel saving water is something that everyone can do no matter where you live. – Dan, California A: As you mentioned, I recently returned from a water conservation media tour in California, and I learned some things as well. For instance, most reservoirs in California are at low levels. Also, snow levels in 2014 were well below normal levels and not surprisingly, wildfire activity is up. I agree with you that saving water is everybody’s job, so

here is my “saving water is as easy as one, two, three” message: 1. Change the aerators in all your faucets to water-saving aerators that use only 1.5 gallons per minute. 2. Install high-efficiency shower heads that use only 2 gallons per minute or less. My favorite new feature for a hand shower is called an eco-boost feature. These hand showers can use only 1.5 gallons per minute. A press of a button can supply a 2 gallons per minute rinse, and when the button is released, the flow returns to the normal watersaving rate. 3. Replace your older, water-guzzling toilet that may use over 2.5 gallons per flush with a new high-efficiency toilet that uses only 1.28 gallons per flush. New quality highefficiency toilets have been redesigned to flush with power. So, you should not have to double flush to do your civic duty and save water.

plant beneath the leafy canopy of a tree must be suited to shade. It’s also surprisingly dry under there, because the canopy sheds rain like an umbrella. Plants beneath a tree will get much less rain than the rest of your garden. Still, there are a number of plants that can do well in dry shade. Yiesla suggests bishop’s hat (Epimedium), wild ginger (Asarum canadense), Siberian bugloss (Brunnera macrophylla) and hostas. Ferns and sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum) also can do well under a tree, she said, if you are willing to do some watering. Be careful about planting rapidly spreading groundcovers such as dead nettle (Lamium) or English ivy (Hedera helix), Yiesla said. They can spread so quickly they out-compete other

plants. Ivy can climb trees, Yiesla says, so it needs to be pruned to prevent it from growing onto the branches and covering leaves. Another option is to plant native woodland wildflowers, such as toothwort (Cardamine concatenata), Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica), white trout lily (Erythronium albidium), May apple (Podophyllum peltatum) and sharp-lobed hepatica (Hepatica acutiloba). These plants evolved to bloom early in spring, when the trees’ leaves are still furled and more sunlight can reach the ground. After blooming, when the leaves have opened and the shade deepens, they will go dormant. Some, such as bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis), will keep their foliage all season, but others will dis-

appear entirely until next spring. You can even plant these wildflowers among hostas or ferns that will fill in later, after the wildflowers have tucked themselves away. One mistake many gardeners make, Yiesla said, is to create a raised bed or planter box around a tree. That can harm the tree two ways: by piling up soil so deep that air can’t reach the roots, and by trapping moisture against the bark to harbor insects or cause rot. “I’d rather see people plant right into the ground,” she said. Another option is to plant shade-tolerant annuals or perennials in large pots and set several of them beneath a tree. They will bring some color to the shade without smothering or damaging the tree’s roots.

Weed killer concerns KEITH REED just be careful not to spray these plants”. If only it were that easy. This class of chemical moves very easily with the wind, traveling much farther than you might imagine. To make matters a bit worse, the liquid form of the product does not even have to make the trip with the wind. When conditions are right (higher temperatures and young, actively growing plants are a big part of this), even the vapor from the product can be enough to cause a problem. Scientists use the term epinasty to describe the growth of the affected plant. Damage is characterized by stretching, twisting, and general malformation of the leaves and stems. Sometimes, the plants can recover and outgrow this, but oftentimes they do not. It can help to prune off the damaged portions since once the plant part is deformed, it is never going to regain its full function.

The take home message is one you’ve heard often if you are a regular reader. Part of the role of the product label is to warn you of issues like this, but it is up to the user to read and follow the instructions. Keith can be reached via email at keith.reed@ okstate.edu, phone at 405-747-8320, or in person at the Payne County Extension office, located at 315 W. 6th in Stillwater.

An unpleasant side-effect to all the great rains we’ve had recently is the explosion in our weed growth. This has been especially true in vegetable gardens and ornamental beds where the exposed soil has been too wet to cultivate. The calls and damaged plant samples coming into the Extension office right now serve as a somber reminder for the need to take care with weed control products, especially those designed to control broad leaf weeds. The vast majority of broadleaf weed control products contain 2,4-D (Dimethylamine salt of 2,4-DDichlorophenoxyace tic acid) or a closely related chemical. This active ingredient is found in hundreds of different products and can come in liquid or granular form. When used properly in accordance with the label instructions, this product does a great job at controlling most broadleaf weeds. The bad news is it is equally as effective at killing many of our desirable plants as well with tomatoes, potatoes, and grapes being some of the most sensitive. “No problem”, you may say, “I’ll

Arrange a time when you can meet with them together so you can present the check after each one signs a receipt stating that the full deposit has been returned. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: I lost a court decision in 2010 but did not pay the judgment immediately, so the woman who sued me filed a lien against my home in 2011. I paid her the full amount last summer, and she removed the lien, but it still appears on my credit report. The credit bureau won’t take it off, which is hurting my credit score and making it more difficult to

refinance my mortgage. What can I do? ANSWER: Your letter states that the lien was recorded in 2011, after you failed to promptly pay a court-ordered debt. Even though you finally paid it last year, the lien itself will remain on your credit report for seven years from the date it was filed. Because the lien was a bona fide debt, the credit bureau was correct in refusing to erase it from your record. However, your report should also include a notation that the lien was released after the debt was paid in full last summer. Take another look at your report to see if it includes such a

notation. If it doesn’t, contact the bureau again to see how the information can be updated. I’m sure the bureau will be happy to help, provided that you can supply a copy of the lien release or other basic documentation that proves that the past-due debt has now been paid. The bottom line here is that the lien will stay on your record until 2018, which will hurt your overall credit score. You’re the only person who can limit the damage (and get a better refinancing deal) by making sure that your credit report also includes a note that says the judgment lien has been

When should I pay a house painter? By Angie Hicks Angie’s List

Dear Angie: We’re having an interior paint job done, and I’m wondering whether to pay when the work is done or as it proceeds. – Sherry S., Crystal Lake, Ill. Dear Sherry: It’s not uncommon for painters to request a down payment of 20 to 30 percent of a job’s total cost. Local or state regulations

may limit the amount allowed for a down payment, so check the rules before starting contract work. Typically, after you’ve made the down payment, you won’t pay again until the job is done. However, a project that is large in scope – either because of the area to be painted or the amount of prep work required – may feature scheduled payments along the way. If that’s the case, plan to hold

back at least 10 percent until the work is completed to your satisfaction. Avoid any painting contractor who requires full payment up front. All payment terms should be fully detailed in a written contract. There are two types of home project contracts: fixed-price, which spells out the exact cost, including materials and labor, and time-and-materials, which bills you by the hour for labor

and materials. Keep in mind that a fixed-price contract is the most common – and generally most preferred – type of home-remodeling contract. In fact, time-and-materials contracts for home projects are not legal in California. Whichever kind of contract you encounter, carefully read through the details and compare multiple bids side by side. Some painters will bid separately for paint and mate-

rials, while others include those in the overall price. Make sure you’re comparing apples to apples, as far as type of paint and materials to be used. Painters price their jobs one of two ways: by square footage or the amount of time the job takes. New construction often warrants a price by square footage

because there are fewer variables – no furniture to move and the walls that don’t require repairs. If the home is occupied, the price will most likely be determined by the time estimated to complete the work. On average, painters charge from $250 to $400 to paint a typical 15foot-by-12-foot bedroom.

When hiring, consider painters who have good reviews on a trusted site and who can show proof of appropriate licensing, insurance and bonding. Consider the added step of contacting recent references. Ask painting contractors about post-job services, such as what happens if you discover an area that was painted poorly.

show house for the Junior League of High Point and Traditional Home magazine. The kitchen of the show house is stunning. Black painted cabinets and woodwork are sitting pretty on a natural wood-tone floor. White subway tiles are classic and make the perfect backdrop for black. White countertops create a transition for the subway tiles. The appliances are stainless steel, but the cabinet hardware is gold. The light fixtures are a deeper brass tone. The look works because it is rich in color, drawing from the black, brown and warm brass hardware. The only introduction of pattern is in the black-and-white window treatment and the kitchen stools. tone stools bring the warm, natural tone up off the floor and into the landscape of the room. Appliances, for the most part, need to be stainless steel. If you don’t want metal, consider wooden fronts that match your cabinetry. Stainless steel sinks for serious cooks are durable and so much easier to keep clean. Ranges have become statement pieces. If you are devoted to the Wolf brand, then you want to keep those red knobs front and center. Thermador offers choices of knobs for its professional-quality ranges. If you are considering an Officine Gullo cooking machine, color is everything. The Italian company’s mission is to make us rethink the traditional

kitchen. What doesn’t work? Mixing warm and cold tones. Understand the mood of the room as you start to pull together all the elements. If you are creating a chic, contemporary kitchen and want to work with gray or white, make them cool colors with blue or black undertones. Use shiny metals instead of brushed or patina tones. Going more tradition or transitional? Think warm whites, creams, blacks, wood tones and browns. Satin, polished nickel, soft brass finishes and warm touches of copper can be complementary. Lighting fixtures should be outstanding. Don’t pass up something you love because it’s silver, copper or

gold. It all can work together. Oh, and while I’m thinking about it, you can wear that gold bracelet with the silver one. That works, too.
