Expanding small spaces with glass By Cathy Hobbs Tribune News Service
Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, January 15, 2016

Small spaces present unique challenges that don’t exist in larger spaces. Not only are small spaces challenged by their spatial restrictions, but there are also visual challenges that homeowners may wish to overcome. When it comes to small spaces, there are ways to visually expand a space to make it appear larger. One of the main design techniques in order to achieve this is to creatively utilize glass and reflective surfaces. WHY GLASS? The transparent properties of glass automatically create a sense of lightness in a space, as opposed to creating visual clutter. Surfaces that are solid or heavy by contrast tend to visually consume space, which may be desired in rooms that are large and cavernous, but is not desirable in smaller rooms. HOW TO USE GLASS Reflective surfaces in general are ideal for small spaces. When looking for ways to incorporate reflective surfaces, keep in mind that these surfaces reflect and bounce light, as well as reflect off other surfaces. If you have rooms with little light or few windows, glass and reflective surfaces will not only help to make the
room appear larger, but will also help bring more light into the space. IDEAL GLASS HOME DECOR SELECTIONS When looking for the types of furniture pieces to incorporate into your decor, there are some core selections that will help enlarge small spaces, including: • Glass dining tables • Small glass side tables • Large mirrors • Frosted glass • Colored glass ALTERNATIVES TO GLASS Looking to enlarge your small space beyond the use of glass? While glass is an ideal solution, there are other reflective surfaces and design techniques that can be used as well. • Metallic surfaces are a great way to bring reflective surfaces into your space. Metallic surfaces will also help you incorporate color into your space. • If you have a space with few or no windows, consider hanging mirrors or reflective decorative wall hangings in a series. These decorative items will act like windows and visually enlarge your space. • Reflective stone surfaces and materials such as lucite and lacquer can also help to visually enlarge a space.
How to achieve the boho chic vibe at home By Sacha Strebe

There is something downright cool and enviable about the bohemian lifestyle. Maybe it’s my nomadic heritage, but most of us dream about that whimsical gypset life, traveling endlessly to far-flung places and colorful cities rich in culture and history. That’s why boho homes are still on the top of our inspiration list _ who doesn’t have a bohemian board on Pinterest? Think unique and exotic fabrics, perfectly disheveled throws, an abundance of greenery, sentimental keepsakes, relics, knickknacks and handmade collectibles lovingly layered to create a worldly space. For interior designers, Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe of Los Angeles-based firm Nickey Kehoe, the bohemian interior style is inviting, collected and worldly. “Nothing usually feels like it was designed for the space, but rather found or chosen because of a meaning or story,” said Nickey. Amber Lewis of Amber Interiors, who has perfected this boho-chic style, agrees. “I think the best way to describe the boho interior look is simply a laid-back, casual and collected feeling of a room pulled together mixing pieces that are
eclectic and a little worldly.” Read on for more of their tips on creating the signature boho-chic style at home. MYDOMAINE: Bohemian rooms are usually fairly layered. How do you achieve this look without overcrowding the room? AMBER LEWIS: I think editing is a huge tip. Start with a neutral palette, and add little pops of color. Choose one tone or color to work with and choose complementary colors to add in the rugs, pillows, and knickknacks. When it start to feel “overdone,” take things away. I spend hours playing with color combos and feeling out what I think works. TODD NICKEY: We often start with a neutral palette in the home and let there be a clean canvas of rustic materials that won’t compete too much with the often colorful and textural pieces associated with a bohemian room. The art of editing is key here and having the important pieces of furniture speak for the room rather than an amassment of trinkets in every corner trying to compete with each other. That being said, the bohemian look certainly does have a certain ‘"abundance” associated with it, but it’s best when
they’re organized and situated in the right “place.” MD: There is a real mix of color and pattern in bohemian interiors. How do you pull this off so it’s more chic than clash? AL: I love mixing stripes, with paisley, and texture, or batik and tie dye. The best way to do this without it all clashing is pick the boldest pattern and sandwich it in between the more mellow textural pieces and make sure to have a balance of 1/3 crazy, the rest neutral. AMY KEHOE: For us, sometimes the clash is what makes the chic! It’s often competing colors and patterns that seem contradictory but are really complementary and that’s what takes a professional eye (and trial and error) to determine. MD: When it comes to texture with bohemian style, is it anything goes, or are there rules we should stick to? AL: When it comes to texture and boho anything goes as long as it’s not over the top! Velvet works amazingly with linen, rustic wood looks gorgeous with a polished marble, and a batik funky textile looks gorgeous with brass and shiny metals. There is no real rule of thumb here. Mix away! TN: We like to use velvets and corduroys to get a depth
and richness on the main pieces with trims and fringes on pillows and blankets for an added visual element and keeping the layers interesting. To keep it effortless, practice restraint and use consistent materials if possible. You don’t want the eye to be always overwhelmed. MD: There is a real mix of high and low decor. What are some key vintage pieces and eras you look for when putting a boho room together? AL: I love a random midcentury piece mixed with a brand-new piece straight from a big box store to help it look less new and fresh from the showroom floor. AK: An 18th-century piece like a low rustic coffee table that shows hundreds of years of patina, so it’s not delicate (and) usually helps set the stage for a relaxing yet sophisticated room. MD: What are some of the go-to materials for a bohemian look? AL: “Vintage ceramics, vintage brass, rustic woods, and funky textiles are some of my boho go-tos. I think mixing the elements is crucial in getting the eclectic mix of styles that defines the boho vibe.” TN: “One element that can get overlooked when designing a room is the use of plants. We love
the ficus religiosa (sacred fig) or a philodendron on a table. A potted citrus tree outdoors also helps add a warmth to a space.” MD: Who are your favorite designers and brands that are making some interesting and cool bohemian decor, art and furniture? AL: I have been a long time fan of Commune Design and all that they do. They have an incredible way of mixing styles, plus they have such a diversified business model and are doing all kinds of killer projects. AK: Mostly we turn to places and cities where color is really a part of the culture. Other than the obvious of Marrakesh or Tangiers, we love the colors of Oaxaca and
the temples of Indonesia. The Hacienda de San Antonio in Colima, Mexico, really is a treasured location that comes to mind when thinking of adventures and wandering. MD: Is there a difference between the California boho look and other styles around the world? AL: I don’t know if it’s a huge difference between Cali boho and other boho, except maybe Cali
boho is a little more beachy and inspired by California’s unique climate and gorgeous environments. Californians also have a very distinct lifestyle. We are by nature pretty laid back, and I think that’s reflected in our version of boho. TN: Bohemianism is a state of mind, not just a look; let your creativity, passions, and understanding of the history dictate your space, not the trends.

How to succeed at vegetable gardening in drought times By Maureen Gilmer Tribune News Service
plant longevity, not beauty or style. There’s simply too much going on in there to sacrifice space on non-edible elements and ideas. Designers have created ornamental gardens for vegetables that actually make food harder to grow and yields less generous due to lack of room for tools, access and bulk soil products. There’s less room to step and work in many, which make simple picking an exercise in hop scotch! Food gardens should be nothing more than hard working spaces where we repeat the age old cycle of planting, flowering and harvest ad infinitum. Every family with a backyard can find success growing food even during drought. Most soils support vegetables, but where it’s very poor raised beds are affordable alternatives. Actually just a couple of raised beds with row covers can make a significant change to the average family’s food bill despite water restrictions. So make some changes, adapt, be flexible and discover just how much you can grow in the midst of drought, desert or just during dry times.

over centuries remain alive and well for posterity. Though there is little we can do about changes in the weather and extended drought, as gardeners we can adapt to them just as farmers have done for millennia. Historic examples come from the Zuni waffle gardens of the desert Southwest where this indigenous agriculture thwarted the worst of the desert during an earlier era of climate change. With uniquely desert adapted varieties from this region, as well as plants from tribal fields deep into Mexico, unique seed houses such as Native Seed/SEARCH of Tucson makes amazingly tough food plants available for growing clean, organic food in places you’d never imagine could support a crop. The truth is vegetable gardens are pure function evolving from our most elemental need for survival. A working garden doesn’t resemble those perfectly ordered beds after the rigid French potager. In the contemporary home garden during uncertain times it’s all about outcomes, yields and

Heirloom vegetables come from seed that has been handed down for generations in a particular region or area, hand-selected by farmers for a special trait. They are open pollinated, which means they’re pollinated by insects or wind without human intervention. Heirlooms aren’t just beautiful and different and nonGMO, each one originates in its own part of the world. When those regions have been fighting the same battle that you do (bugs, heat, drought, disease, etc.), they try to make their plants stronger by taking seed only from the largest, strongest and most productive individual plants each year. Over generations, that variety gradually improves yields for both the farmer and his village that shares in this success. That very same heirloom variety may be ideal for solving the same problems in your garden, too. This is the foundation for my new book: “Growing Vegetables in Drought, Desert and Dry Times: The Complete Guide to
Organic Gardening Without Wasting Water” (Sasquatch Press, $22.95). My efforts to grow food here deep in the Sonoran Desert led me to make changes to better adapt to the harsh climate here. These old and new techniques are equally useful for those hit with water conservation regulations. I want everyone to learn what a row cover is and why it’s so valuable to feed families in the midst of an epic drought or enhance water conservation anywhere else. Row covers also solve some of our most vexing insect pest problems naturally to make growing clean, undamaged greens a snap. I studied all the heirloom catalogs for vegetable varieties that originate in arid regions around the world. I had to determine their nation of origin such as Iraqi tomatoes carried by Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, obtained from a botanical garden before so much was destroyed. This alone is a remarkable save in light of the current state of this region and loss of seed banks to war. When we grow heirlooms, we ensure those varieties developed

By David W. Myers Most siblings do not have to pay federal taxes on the sale of their jointly owned house unless they are married (yeech!) to each other. DEAR MR. MYERS: My sister and I are selling the home we purchased and have shared together for seven years. We bought the house when the real estate market was crummy. Now prices have jumped up, and we expect to make about $85,000 each from the sale. How will our profit be taxed? Will we have to pay taxes to the IRS because we are not a married couple and file our income-tax returns separately? ANSWER: There’s no reason to worry. Internal Revenue Code 121 allows married couples who file their taxes together to keep up to $500,000 in their home-sale profit tax-free, provided that they have lived in the house for at least two of the previous five years. Single taxfilers (like you and your sister) who meet the two-outof-five-years test can each keep up to $250,000 away from the clutches of the IRS. The $85,000 prof-
it that each of you expects to make falls well short of those limits, so you probably won’t owe any federal taxes at all on the sale. Talk to an accountant or other tax expert for more details. Also get a free copy of IRS Publication 523, “Selling Your Home,” by calling the agency’s tollfree hotline (800829-3676) or by downloading it on your computer from www.irs.gov. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: Hey, Dave, what should I buy in January? ANSWER: January is a great time to buy widescreen televisions, shopping experts say, as retailers try to unload their unsold holiday inventory and clear space for
new models that were unveiled at the giant Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month. Look for savings of 25 percent or more in the next few weeks, which will give you plenty of time to install the new TV before Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7. If you made a New Year’s resolution to get in shape and lose weight, now is the time to buy a treadmill or other in-home gym equipment. Retailers are already offering huge discounts on such items, in part because they know that sales will drop in the coming months as many Americans simply “give up” on the fitness oaths that they made to themselves on New Year’s Eve. Though it might
be hard for many folks to think of the summer when their teeth are chattering from the mid-winter cold today, it’s a sure bet that the weather will warm in the months ahead. So, it’s a good time to buy a wall-unit air-conditioner or even a simple fan, before demand heats up later. Find discounts that can top 30 percent now at big-box chains that include Home Depot and Lowe’s, as well as at online retailers such as Newegg.com, said shopping expert Brian Hoyt of bargain-hunting website RetailMeNot.com. January also rings in the start of the traditional “white sales” season, when bedroom, bath and even kitchen linens go on sale at discounts
of 30 percent or more. “Unlike holiday discounts on mid-level quality linen, January white sales bring some of the biggest discounts of the year on both lowerand higher-quality sheets, towels and other textile-related items for the home,” said Brent Shelton, an online shopping pro at FatWallet.com. *** REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: John Wanamaker, founder of one of the nation’s first department stores, is believed to be the creator of the “white sale” in 1878. He discounted prices on thin bed linens, which only came in
white back then, because they didn’t sell very well in Philadelphia’s chilly winter months. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: Can my neighbor keep the Christmas lights on her roof all year long, even if they aren’t turned on? They look really cheesy, especially when the summer comes! ANSWER: It depends on where you live. If your home is in a development that’s governed by a homeowners association, the HOA’s rules likely decide when holiday lights can go up and when they must come down.
Most cities and counties, though, don’t have such rules or laws. That means the Christmas lights can stay up 365 days a year. There are a few exceptions. In San Diego, for example, all holiday lights must be removed by February 2. Violators can be hit with a $250 fine. Despite some widely spread press and Internet reports over the years, Maine does not have a law that orders holiday lights and decorations to be removed by Jan. 14, said Sue Wright, a reference librarian at the legislative law library in the Pine Tree State’s capitol of Augusta.

Problems with ventless gas log
8
Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, January 15, 2016
Tribune News Service
Q: I’m having trouble with a ventless gas log. When I use the log there are odors and the smoke alarm sometimes goes off. Is there anything I can do to remedy the problem or do I need a professional. If so, who do I call? A: The first thing is to determine that the odors you are experiencing are not from the natural gas supply to the log or maybe from any other gas appliance in the home. Natural gas is colorless and odorless, but it has an additive that was introduced by the gas supplier. The odor reminds me of rotten eggs and is used as a warning. This is to get your attention that something is wrong. If you suspect you have a gas leak, do not turn on a light or any other electrical appliance or use a cellphone inside the home. The entire family and pets need to go outside and immediately report the possibility of a gas leak to the utility company or dial 911. There are some
people who say the odors are brought into the burning log from existing odors that are present in the air of the home such as those from paints, stains, cleaning chemicals, etc. If this were true, the odors would always be present when the log is in use. My experience has shown that a new log probably has oils and cleaning agents that are a part of the manufacturing process. When I’m in a new home with a ventless gas log, I often recommend the buyers “burn the log off” to reduce future odors. I have found that if the gas log is allowed to burn for approximately three hours, the odors will usually subside. I also remind the buyers to only use the gas logs for a few hours at a time and to then ventilate the fumes by opening a window or door for a short period of time. A vented appliance is not all that efficient whereas a ventless log is 99 percent efficient up until the time you have to open a window or door. Various sources say that two to three hours of use is based on the size of the home and the availability
of fresh air. Refer to the manufacturer’s installation instructions for size and use of logs. I know I have used my ventless gas log, and there are minor odors at the beginning of the heating season, but they soon go away, and I never use the log for more than an hour at a time. A quick tip: If the pilot light does not stay on and you’ve already replaced the thermocouple, remove the cooled logs to expose the opening for the pilot light. Use a can of pressurized air, the kind normally used to clean electronic components, to spray the inside of the gas tube opening. Things as small as spider webs or common house dust can obstruct gas flow and keep the pilot from igniting.

Trend predictions for 2016 By Cathy Hobbs Tribune News Service
year toward healthy and clean design products. 7. Minimalism. Remember the 1980s, when bigger was better? I believe in 2016 the trend will be more toward items that are smaller in scale and can be used in various areas of the home. 8. Multi-functional design. With many people downsizing and living with less, I believe the trend in 2016 will be more toward those items for the home that can pull double duties. 9. Natural elements. Elements such as designs with reclaimed or salvaged woods and recycled materials will continue to be relevant. 10. Economical design. Although the economy has bounced back, I believe a lot of homeowners still wish to be conservative.

Landscape calendar tips Last week we discussed the importance of timing when it comes to effective weed control. I can’t emphasize enough just how much difference this can make when it comes to ensuring a successful landscape. If you missed last week’s column, please go back and take a look, as good weed control opportunities are just around the corner. Insects and disease are two more classes of pest that are best controlled with proper timing. However, problems caused by these issues can vary widely from one year to the next and it is important to understand that treatment may not be necessary just because the calendar suggests it. The best plan of action is mark the calendar for times

This year, with the new Pantone colors of the year being soft, soothing pink (Rose Quartz) and blue (Serenity) I predict the overall trend as far as colors and hues go will be more muted and understated with soft metallics also playing an important role. As people are looking for ways in which to extend their decor, as well as create a soothing environment for living, relaxation and staycations, the color and design trends for 2016 I predict will be a more back-to-basic approach, dominated by foundation colors such as white, cream, taupe, soft silver and muted gold. Here are my top design predictions for 2016: 1. Metallics. Walk into nearly any home decor store and you will likely see metallic tones such as soft silver and muted gold rule the shelves. Metallics are soothing and calm, and they pair well with other muted tones such as white, cream or light brown. 2. Pastels. With this year’s Pantone colors of the year, I predict we will see more pastel colors dominate home decor this year. We will likely see soft yellow, light green
and even peach tones integrated into both soft and hard goods. 3. Soft surfaces. There was a time when hard surfaces and edges were popular in design. This year I am predicting glass and metal will be out and softness in the form of rich, sumptuous fabrics and deep, soft rugs will be in. 4. Muted patterns. With people looking for ways to extend their decor while staying on trend, I predict more muted and subtle patterns will be more popular than bold, vibrant graphics. Muted patterns, will allow homeowners to have color and pattern in their space, while allowing these patterns to be more like background music, as opposed to dominating center stage. 5. Wood and natural elements. I believe there continues to be a backto-nature movement when it comes to home decor. To this end, I believe we will continue to see more craftsmanstyle furniture pieces, as opposed to those that are more generic and mass-produced. 6. Green design. These days, homeowners continue to be savvy when it comes to what they put into their homes. I predict there will continue to be a big push this

radon levels in your home can help prevent unnecessary exposure. If a high radon level is detected in your home, you can take steps to fix the problem to protect yourself and your family. According to the EPA, here are four things you can do during National Radon Action Month: 1. Test your home. The EPA and U.S. Surgeon General recommend that all homes in the U.S. be tested for radon. Testing is easy and inexpensive. Learn more

Attend a National Radon Action Month event in your area _ look for radon events in your community. 3. Spread the word. Spend time during National Radon Action Month encouraging others to learn about radon and test their homes. Tell your family and
friends about the health risk of radon. Encourage them to test their homes. View or order EPA’s free radon publications epa.gov/radon/publications-about-radon. 4. Buy a radonresistant home. If you are considering buying a new home, look for builders who use radonresistant new construction.
