Who should I hire to install a window well? By Angie Hicks

2

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, August 14, 2015

Angie’s List

Dear Angie: What type of service provider installs window wells? Would it be landscapers, general contractors or another category? – Garrett C., Upper Marlboro, Md. Dear Garrett: A landscaper, general contractor or an experienced handyman can install a window well, which is a semi-circular or square excavation surrounding a basement window. Often built of masonry, corrugated galvanized metal, plastic or pressure-treated wood, window wells serve several purposes, including: – Allowing sunlight into a belowground level room. – Preventing moisture damage to basement windows at or below grade. (Window wells keep soil away while still allowing water to drain away from the house.) The scope of your particular project will help determine which professional is best suited for the job. If you plan to install a replacement window at the same time, consult with a wellreviewed window company. If your

project involves creating an opening in the foundation for a new window and window well, hire a company that specializes in foundation work. (Keep in mind that if you have a basement sleeping room, many building codes require that it have an “egress window,” which allows escape in case of fire.) Hiring a professional to install a window well will cost from $500 to more than $2,000, depending on materials used and what grading and/or drainage planning is required. If your project consists of cutting into the foundation – and only a licensed contractor should do this – to install a new window and window well, expect to pay at least $5,000. If you plan to install a window well yourself, be sure to at least consult with a professional to know if you’ll need a drainage system. Before you or anyone does any digging around your home, be sure all underground utilities are identified and marked. (You can dial 811 to get this process going.) Depending on where you live, a permit may be required for this

kind of project, so be sure to check with your municipality before work begins. To maintain the integrity of the window well, keep it clean. Don’t allow leaves and other material to accumulate in the bottom of the window well, as this will prevent water from draining properly. It’s a good idea to buy a clear cover to help keep out debris and excess water; they come in all price points and styles. And if a drain is required, keep it clear. When hiring a contractor, consider pros who have good reviews on a trusted consumer site and who are appropriately licensed, insured and bonded.

Top 10 hottest decor trends for summer 2015 By Cathy Hobbs Tribune News Service

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, August 14, 2015

3

Summer is a time for hot weather and hot trends. There are a number of trends this summer in home decor that may appeal to you to help spice up your home. While summer is typically a time of bright colors, it doesn’t have to be – many of the current trends this summer area mix trendy and traditional. Here are my top 10 hottest decor trends of the summer: 1. Charcoal. Charcoal gray continues to dominate the home decor color palette. The hot trend is to pair charcoal with bold colors such as chartreuse, lime and hot pink, as well as with pale colors such as lavender. 2. Bold graphics. From chevron to medallions, bold graphic patterns continue to dominate prints from upholstery to pillows. 3. Oversized florals. If you haven’t noticed, floral prints are everywhere. But instead of being tiny, meek and mild, they are big, loud and bold. 4. Tweed. Tweed and flannel are two material choices that stand the test of time and never go

out of style. In the summer, they take a homeowner seamlessly into fall. 5. Accessorizing with animal figurines. Accessories come in all different shapes, colors and sizes. Horse head, rhino, fish and frog figurines are hot right now. 6. Faux Fur. From throws to pillows, faux fur remains a hot trend, and in the summer, it’s an awesome way to incorporate fur without worrying about being overheated. 7. Metallics. Metal finishes from brass to silver continue to dominate the decor scene. 8. Ceramics. Especially in the summer, when flowers fresh from the garden add the perfect touch to a room, ceramics of any shape or color make a versatile accent piece. 9. Wood. From bleached, whitewashed floors to reclaimed headboards and walls, wood is fresh and crisp, and it blends perfectly with almost any summer style. 10. Pastels. From powder pinks, soft blues, lemon yellow and mint green, these colors are right on trend for freshening up summer decor.

How to reseed tall fescue lawns Last week’s column generated some questions about reseeding cool season lawns. Here is the process in greater detail. Begin by having your soil tested if that has not been done in the last several years as major nutrient or pH adjustments are better done prior to reseeding. As far as soil preparation, heavy tillage is usually unnecessary, especially if important trees are close by. Given the environmental stress our trees have been dealing with, it is not advisable to damage the surface root system. Oftentimes, a vigorous raking will be adequate to loosen enough soil to provide a good seedbed. If raking is not effective, an aerator can be rented to accomplish the same task. Be advised that a lawn

repeated trips across the area with a riding mower will work just fine. A good packing with flat soled shoes will even work for small areas. Oklahoma researchers have determined that prepped with an stand. stand of Kentucky bluegrass in our area as the water use need and disease pressure is simply too high. It is important to keep the area moist until the seed germinates, perhaps even once or twice a day depending on conditions. This time of year, that should occur in about seven to ten days. Once the seed has germinated, watering frequency can be decreased to allow the soil surface to dry out slightly between waterings. Watering should continue as needed to keep the

new grass growing. Remember to keep an eye on the new grass throughout the winter as the need for a late fall or early winter irrigation is not out of the question. One of the most common reasons for failure of turf grass in shady areas is the build-up of leaves over the winter. It is not critical to keep every leaf picked up, but it is important to at least mulch or move them around so that the turf can get some light and moisture. Oklahoma State University offers some very good fact

sheets for a more indepth look at this process. You can access HLA-6418, 6419, and 6420 from the University website at pods.dasnr.okstate.e du. You many also contact Keith Reed, the Horticulture Educator in the Payne County Cooperative Extension Office for some advice of specific cultivars of grass seed to use. Shrub althea, crape myrtle are two perfect bloomers for dog days of summer By Maureen Gilmer Tribune News Service

shrub native to southeast Asia that became an old-time Texas heirloom. Fondly known as shrub althea, Egolf utilized state-of-theart technology to breed triploid hybrids, which contain three times the usual number of chromosomes. This proportionately increases the potential for new characteristics that would have been impossible in the past. Among Egolf’s goals with the hibiscus was to maximize drought resistance, reduce the size of the species to a more versatile shrub, increase flower production, extend season of bloom and create exciting flower colors. These outstanding hybrids are named for mythological goddesses such as Aphrodite or Diana. With the current drought and nationwide demands for water conservation, Egolf’s triploid althea hybrids

developed in the 1960s are suddenly highly valued for drought-resistant landscaping. What makes them so important is cold hardiness. Too many arid zone plants hailing from mild winters of Australia and the Mediterranean are restricted to very warm winter climates. But these hibiscus goddesses take winters in Zone 5, 100-degree days, minimal water and virtually any kind of soil. This is a rare heavy bloomer for dry gardens in western mountains and colder inland regions. When the dog days of summer roll around, heat makes your garden take a break from flowering. Thanks to the late breeder Dr. Donald Egolf at the U.S. National Arboretum, you can fill this color void with two fabulous dog day bloomers in their new and improved varieties. Since the 1950s, Egolf worked hard to breed superior forms of two beloved old plants, shrub althea and crape myrtle. Both are hallmarks of the South, but improved hybrids from the arboretum make it possible to enjoy both just about everywhere. The single drawback to crape myrtle trees is their vulnerability to mildew, which has limited their use in coastal regions in the past. The disease of the foliage is common where warm temperatures and humidity create an ideal environment for fungus to thrive. Egolf’s 1959 startup program at the Arboretum was dedicated to breeding new mildew-resistant varieties, as well as those with more variable size and new flower colors.

Breeding kicked off with seed of L. fauriei, gathered in Yakushima, Japan, by John Creech of the Raulston Arboretum in North Carolina around 1956. This well-known mildew-resistant species also featured improved bark colors for a new appealing characteristic in its progeny. This was the pivotal species for Egolf’s program to transform Lagerstroemia indica into a series of mildew-free hybrids. A second breakthrough came in 1981 with L. limii, another mildewresistant species contributed by the Shanghai Botanic Garden to further the genetic potential for problem-solving through breeding. The crape myrtle breeding program has resulted in scores of hybrid trees and shrubs that offer a wide range of sizes, growth habits, flower and bark color, as well as disease resistance. You’ll know the arboretum hybrids by their names honoring Native American tribes such as Sioux and Chickasaw. Egolf was also interested in Hibiscus syriacus, an old-fashioned deciduous flowering

ing glasses on if you’re over 50. This is where bugs hang out during the heat of the day and why sprays often don’t discourage them unless carefully applied to both sides. 2. RECOGNITION When inspecting plants, know that the first signs are tiny. They may be a cluster of pinhead-sized eggs stuck to the backside of a leaf, or fine webbing dotted with small red or black spots. There may be small dark feces pellets accumulating on surfaces from caterpillars feeding invisibly on the foliage. While you don’t need to know the exact genus and species of a bug, just knowing its general appearance such as the tiny aphid or the enormous tomato hornworm is the precursor to selecting the right control. 3. PREVENTION It is well known that dirty

plants tend to suffer more bug damage because the dust blocks light from photosynthetic cells weakening their food making potential. Dust also creates an ideal environment for spider mites. This is why it’s recommended you wash off your vegetable garden every couple of weeks with a strong jet of water. This scours the leaf surface to dislodge tiny sucking bugs, eggs, nymphs and newlyhatched larvae before they start damaging the plants. Use an articulating head water wand to shoot water from the ground upward to hit the back sides of leaves where bugs accumulate protected from hot sun and rain. If a weaker plant tends to be drawing abnormal numbers of bugs, remove it altogether. 4. CONTROL The least toxic means of pest control is to begin with

nontoxic methods, then raising the bar step by step as required. The first step to control is to wash the plant to knock down the population. If it’s localized and small, apply insecticidal soap. If you find caterpillars or signs of them, use BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) controls that are natural, quick-acting and very effective. Next step up might be releasing beneficial organisms and insects such as ladybugs and praying mantises that prey on the bugs you don’t want. Only if all these fail, raise the bar with botanically-based pesticides such as neem oil or pyrethrins. Prevention is always easier than controlling an infestation, so follow these four steps throughout the summer months to keep your veggies thriving.

There was a time when the only gravel gardens were in the desert. In lands of little rain where soils are porous and well drained, this surfacing material has proven highly successful. Problems arise when this solution is applied to other locations and climates that are not so compatible with the technique. With gravel proving popular particularly in contemporary landscape design, there are a few caveats to consider before you select it as a lawn substitute. There is a dark side to gravel surfacing that raises its ugly head many months after it’s first laid out. These issues can turn a beautiful new project into a maintenance nightmare if you don’t make the right choices prior to installation.

What does your front door say about you? By Karen Deer

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, August 14, 2015

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do to brighten up the interior of a home. So why not open up your front door to bold and exciting colors, too? A well-chosen front door color can make a strong first impression. Paint colors for the front door can alter the way you feel about your home. And it’s one of the most costeffective ways to spiff up. This year, bold and confident shades are gaining popularity as homeowners are becoming more optimistic about the future and in turn want to stand out from the crowd. A yellow door can be the ultimate statement, say the color experts we consulted. A bold yellow works great for an energetic young family or anyone with a zest for life and fashion. “It can take a leap of faith to paint your entry door yellow, so in turn your door will tell the story of you and your home’s daring personal style,” says Nathan Fischer, Ace Hardware’s national design expert based in Laguna Beach, Calif. An orange shade or a joyful color like berry can help achieve this effect, too. "Finding the perfect color for your entry door is probably the easiest and most costeffective way to add instant character to your home,” says

Fischer. “Unfortunately, most people miss out on this opportunity to express themselves.” Many homeowners can wind up with the most common colors: beige or brown. “Their home may have come with this color already, or because of all the choices, it ends up being the easiest route,” adds Fischer. Amy Fix, of Oakville, Mo., had her husband paint their front door red. “Actually, it’s more like a candy cane red,” says Fix. “When we first moved into the home the front door and the shutters were black. Nothing popped.” Now, the red splash of color is like the lipstick on her house. Real estate surveys show that home buyers say they prefer doors that are white or red. The next most popular colors are shades of brown and black in St. Louis. Blue and green follow right behind. Colleen Lawler, of Coldwell Banker Gundaker, works with home buyers, and front doors are often the topic of discussion during a showing. “If I walk up to a white door, I’m going to see an engineer’s house. Everything is going to look tidy and everything is in its place,” says Lawler. White works great if you are going for a simple, clean and updated look. A home that is well-decorated and artistic, with a mix of exterior materials, will look great with a white door. This can add a simple but styl-

ized appearance. When Lawler shows a home with a red door, her clients either love it, or really don’t like it at all. “A red door is a welcoming site,” says Lawler. The majority of home buyers she works with like red shades. “Black is formal,” adds Lawler. It’s usually not objectionable to buyers, but at the same time it does not leave an impression. Fischer agrees. “Black is classic and so sophisticated. You can never go wrong with a black entry door. It goes with any style of home and gives an established feel that can work with modern or more traditional homes.” Lawler says when she walks through a blue or green door, she’s walking into a house where the homeowner may have a creative or artistic side, or the homeowners could be outgoing. Natalie Turner, Lowe’s spokeswoman, says consumers are breaking away from traditional door colors and transitioning to expressive and independent shades like a teal or a welcoming green. Even a softer approach with a light blue provides a fresh look. And for all you purple lovers, painting a door a purple shade will let your guests know that you don’t take things too seriously. It’s an attentiongrabbing color that brings in glamour, fashion and just plain fun.

cracks, repair them by dabbing small amounts of caulk into the cracks and working the caulk in with a putty knife. Let the caulk dry, then sand the repaired spots until they’re smooth. 3. Vacuum away extra dust, and wipe the door with a tack cloth. Dampen the cloth with mineral spirits to remove stubborn dust. 4. Apply paint and primer in a dust-free area so that no particles ruin the door surface. Brush on a single coat of primer with a wide paintbrush, covering the front and all side edges of the door. Primer prevents the door from absorbing moisture and helps smooth out its texture. Once the primer has dried on the front of the door, flip the door over to prime the back.

If the primer drips or goes on chunky, lightly sand the surface to smooth it out. 5. Once the primer has dried completely, stir your paint. Paint the door from the top down, using a wide brush for corners or crevices and a small roller for flat panels. Make long strokes with the brush, and clean any visible lines on the front door with a dry cloth. Just as with the primer, let each side of the door dry before turning it over to work on the other side. Add at least two coats of paint to the door, using three or more if you want to increase color saturation. 6. Let your front door dry before reinstallation. Once the paint no longer feels tacky to the touch, replace all hardware.

Relax with variation of old-fashioned paper dolls Tribune News Service

When August arrives, the frenzy of summer activities starts to relax. The summer checklist is beginning to fill up ... vacation – check; summer camp – check; pool parties, sleepovers and playdates – check, check, check. August is the perfect time to relax a little with some good old-fashioned paper crafting at home. Paper dolls are something I enjoyed as a kid, and with a little updating, they are still a guaranteed success with little girls (or little boys) today. Begin by taking a photo of your child wearing a bathing suit, with hand placement on their hips and legs slightly apart. This

pose will ensure the clothing can be successfully placed on the doll. Print out the photo, back it with a self-adhesive magnet (available in business card size at any office supply store) and cut out the subject. Pull out your bins of paper scraps and let your kids cut out dresses, shirts, skirts and pants that will fit the doll’s body. Some kids will even want to add boots, hair bows and other accessories. After embellishing each article of clothing, attach a piece of self-adhesive magnet to the back. The magnet eliminates the need to cut tabs on all the clothing and offers a much simpler solution for attaching the clothing to the doll. If your kids are

like my nieces, they will want to create a booklet to hold the doll and all the clothing. Simply trim a sheet of cover stock and fold it into thirds. Attach narrow strips of magnet to both sides, which will become the fasteners that hold all of the clothing and place a vertical magnet strip in the middle section to hold the doll. If your kids really get into it, it’s easy to expand the doll wardrobe and the dolls by simply making more trifold booklets to hold them. If your kids like playing dress-up with your clothes, this may be the perfect project to get them out of your closet and into designing doll-size clothing for their own.

of the term -recently stood at about 3.5 percent. If the Fed raises short-term rates by one-half of 1 percent and banks pass along the increase to new borrowers, it would tack on $42 a month to the payments on a 30-year, $150,000 loan. Oddly, though, an increase in the Fed’s short-term interest rate actually might push down the cost of new fixed-rate mortgages. That’s because fixed-rate loans tend to track rates on longerterm Treasury bonds and notes. If a Fed rate hike convinces investors that inflation will remain under control over the next several years, they won’t demand higher yields and might even consider accepting less, which theoretically should translate into a drop in rates

on new fixed-rate mortgages for future buyers and refinancers. *** REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: It’s hard to believe, but the Federal Reserve has held the benchmark short-term rate that it charges to lenders from 0 to 0.25 percent -- a maximum 2 1/2 cents on a dollar -- since the end of 2008. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: We have a large apricot tree in our back yard. Is it true that its fruit can make dogs and cats sick or even kill them, or is that just an old wives tale? ANSWER: Apricots can indeed sicken household pets, according to a representative for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

c. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: We recently purchased a new home and had to pay several hundred dollars in transfer taxes to the county. Can we deduct the amount on our next income-tax return, just as we always did with the property taxes we paid on our previous home? ANSWER: Sorry, but no. Although property taxes can be deducted every year, transfer taxes that are charged when a real estate sale closes are treated differently by the Internal Revenue Service. Most local governments now

That’s because their stems, leaves and seeds contain naturally occurring cyanide. If you have a dog or cat but don’t want to tear out your tree, at least keep it welltrimmed. Safely and quickly dispose of the trimmings or any fruit that drops to the ground. Amazingly, the ASPCA has identified nearly 1,000 different fruit trees, flowers and other types of vegetation that can threaten the health of domesticated pets. They range from apple and cherry trees to carnations, daffodils and daisies. The complete list can be found on the Internet at www.aspca.org/toxi

charge transfer taxes, which easily can run into the hundreds or even thousands of dollars. They were originally created to help offset the cost of updating public records when a property was sold. Today, though, many municipalities use the revenue for a variety of purposes, from repaving roads to building new parks and homeless shelters. Though you cannot deduct the transfer taxes you recently paid on your upcoming tax return, you can include it your home’s adjustedcost basis to reduce any taxes you might owe when you eventually sell.

The widely expected increase in short-term interest rates by the Federal Reserve Board likely will have an uneven impact on borrowers across the nation. DEAR MR. MYERS: Our newspaper has been filled with stories lately about the Federal Reserve Board planning to raise shortterm interest rates. Why would it do this when the housing market is getting better? ANSWER: The rate-setting Federal Reserve works in mysterious ways, but its members usually make the right decisions. Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen recently said that it likely would be “appropriate” to raise shortterm interest rates

before the end of this year, perhaps as early as next month. Raising rates curbs borrowing by companies and individuals alike, which slows the economy and keeps it from overheating. Homeowners who have adjustablerate mortgages or those with adjustable homeequity credit lines would feel the pain of a Fed rate hike almost immediately. That’s because rates on most ARMs rise or fall quickly in tandem with the short-term rates that banks pay to borrow from the government. Introductory rates on the popular 5/1 ARMs – which have a below-market fixed rate for the first five years of the loan and then automatically convert to a rate that typically adjusts once a year for the remainder
