Spring weed control starts now One of the things we can count on in the Extension office is an overwhelming number of phone calls and walk-ins in late spring when the spring weeds begin to explode. Annual bluegrass, chickweed, and henbit are the three of the most common weeds in our area, but there are many other species that also cause problems. Even though these are often referred to as spring weeds since that is when they become an issue, these are actually classified as “winter annual” weeds. This is an important point as the life cycle determines the best time to attempt control. By definition, winter annual means the weed germinates in the fall, grows very slowly throughout the winter, and then completes its life cycle in the late spring or early summer. This means the weed is at full strength when it becomes a problem, and thus, much more difficult to control. The ideal way to control these weeds is to apply a fallpre-emergence product now before these weeds germinate. The key word is before as preemergent products do nothing to control weeds after they have already come up. In our area, this usually
Home Grown KEITH REED means around the first week of September as we begin to get our first fall cool fronts and (hopefully) rains. Look for lawn pre-emergent products containing the active ingredient prodiamine or pendamethalin. For weed control in ornamental beds, the key ingredients are dithopyr, isoxaben, or trifluralin. NOTE: It is very important to avoid combination products in ornamental beds that are made to kill existing weeds in addition to providing pre-emergent control as these can harm your desirable plants. These chemicals can be purchased in several different formulations including granular and sprayable products. Looking for the products mentioned above should only be the starting point for selecting a product. Failure to read the label and follow the instructions will result in disappointing results and could possibly cause damage to your landscape. Just one example: the label
will provide specific instructions about post application watering. This is extremely important so the product can be moved into the soil layer where it does its work in a gaseous form. If it is not watered in, it will be worthless. One last important point of consideration: Do not apply these products if you have a brand new stand of grass or are planning on seeding this fall. Once again, this information is covered on the label, but unfortunately it is a detail that is often overlooked. These products will prevent turfgrass and ornamental seeds from germinating just as well as weed seeds. If you have questions concerning this process, contact Keith Reed, the Horticulture Educator in the Payne County Cooperative Extension office. He can be reached via email at keith.reed@okstate.e du, or by phone at 405-747-8320. You are also welcome to stop by the Extension office at 315 W 6th, Suite 103 in Stillwater.

Custom shower questions By Ed Del Grande Tribune News Service
Q: Dear Ed: We just moved and remodeling the master bathroom is top priority. So, this is my chance to install a custom-style shower stall. With that said, can you please give me some Ed tips on designing a custom shower? A: A custom shower stall can be as simple as adding a personal hand spray unit or as complicated as installing electronic mixing valves with music and lighting. I’ve worked on many custom shower projects, and here are my three basic tips: 1. Follow local codes and any water restrictions. First contact your plumber and local building inspector

for information on permits, fixture codes and/or water flow restrictions you may need to follow. 2. Choose your spray options. Once you understand your local requirements, choose your favorite spray(s) to feature in your new shower. Spray options can include body sprays, multifunction heads and rain-style shower heads. 3. Look for shower packages. Rather than purchasing single components, performance shower packages are available. These packages may include the mixing valve, shower heads, diverter and accessories all in one. Shower packages also take the guesswork out of design, so your new custom shower stall can look as clean as it makes you feel.

DEAR MR. MYERS: I followed your earlier advice by ordering my annual free copies of my credit report from Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. Everything on each report is accurate, except that one of the three credit bureaus shows the address of the apartment that I left last year instead of the home I bought about four months ago. I don’t think that this is a big problem because I never missed a rental payment on my old apartment or a single monthly payment
on the house I bought in April. What are your thoughts on this issue? ANSWER: Contact the credit bureau that has the wrong address on its files and have it corrected immediately. Out-of-date addresses on a credit report can lead to all sorts of problems. For starters, it means that you might not be credited for the monthly mortgage payments that you have been religiously making since you bought your first home earlier this year. That could keep your score lower than it should be, which might translate into a higher
loan-interest rate if you want to refinance or buy another home months or years from now. By “sharing” your old address with someone you don’t know, the credit bureau also might assume that you’re responsible for debts of the tenant who took over your previous apartment. If the tenant doesn’t pay his or her bills, your score
may suffer. Even worse, an outdated or otherwise wrong address could even prompt a bureau to “blend” your credit score with the person you don’t know. That’s a cool deal if the bureau confuses your home address with that of Bill Gates, but not so much if the tenant or borrower is a criminal or financial deadbeat.

evenings and put in floor heating. Since we heat with natural gas, what would be the cost in added electric bills? One flooring dealer has told us that he can put floor heating under carpet. Is this safe and reliable? What other questions should we be asking? A: Many utility companies offer free energy assessments for their customers that are valuable for basic energy savings, but typically don’t provide an in-depth evaluation of the home. If you’re still having issues after a free energy audit, we strongly recommend hiring a certified energy rater to pinpoint deficiencies in
the home. A 20-yearold home usually needs significant upgrades to air seal the home to improve the home’s comfort levels. What you did not say is whether or not you had a problem before the heating upgrade. If the new furnace was installed using the existing 20-year-old ductwork, there may be a problem with the size of the ducts verses the output of the new furnace fan. This is something the heating, venting and air conditioning (HVAC) contractor should be able to answer. The ducts need to be sized for maximized airflow to each register in the home. Each room, except the kitchen and bathrooms, should also
have a cold air return to maximize airflow. When inspecting a crawl space on an older home, I often advise the client to close and seal the crawl space vents and to add an opening to the ductwork in the crawl. This needs to be inspected and installed by a qualified HVAC expert. There is always the problem
of the ducts being oversized or undersized for the home. When conditioning the crawl space, it is important that all the foundation perimeter walls are insulated from the rim joists down to the top of the footings. It is also important that all the soils under the home are completely covered with a 6-mil or thicker vapor bar-
