Tree care starts on ground The importance of protecting the root system of a mature tree cannot be overstated if the long term health of a tree is important. But what exactly do we mean by “protecting the root system?” We will get to that later into the column but first try to visualize this word picture as it is important in understanding how much root protection is enough. Many of us are under the impression that if you pulled a tree out of the ground with its root system intact, the roots would be a mirror image of the top growth. This is untrue. A better model would be to turn a dinner plate upside down and place a wine glass on it. The goblet bowl would represent the leaf canopy, the stem would be the trunk, the base would be the critical root flare, and the dinner plate would represent the feeder roots. With this image in mind, you can see that feeder roots extend out well beyond the dripline of the tree, often times 3 to 5 times the distance of the tree itself. It is these roots that the tree depends on for nutrient and moisture intact and air exchange. When they are damaged or covered, the tree will suffer to some extent. Just how

Home Grown KEITH REED much of this damage a tree can take is highly variable and is dependent on several factors including species, soil conditions, environmental conditions and sudden changes to the microclimate. The root flare, the area above ground where the tree begins to widen as well as the large structural roots immediately below ground, is even more important to the long term health of the tree. This area should be protected completely if at all possible. What exactly is meant by protection? Basically, it is anything that might dramatically alter the soil where these roots live and work to sustain the tree. This could be as non-invasive as soil compaction. A classic example of this is when areas under trees suddenly become regular parking areas, or in the case of housing construction, material staging or storage areas. Adding soil to an existing area is also discouraged. While the problem may

appear to be different from compaction, the net result is the same. Air and water movement is suddenly limited by the change. Moving on to a more extreme example would be destroying the roots by deep rototilling or soil removal. During the drought of the last few years, I saw several examples where trees finally gave up and died when unknowing homeowners rototilled under their trees attempting to reestablish their lawn. The loss of the root mass was simply too much for the stressed tree to overcome. Does this mean that if you’ve done some of this to your trees that they are going to die soon? Not necessarily. As an Extension Educator, clients often dislike hearing the words “it depends,” but that is exactly the case here. As already stated, a trees ability to withstand damage is dependent on many factors. All I can say with certainty is

How to protect woody plants from drought By Maureen Gilmer

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, September 11, 2015

Tribune News Service

Jetlag is what happens when your normal day and night schedule gets messed up by travel and time change. You’re tired, energy levels drop and your brain doesn’t work like it usually does. This is happening to plants everywhere there are water cutbacks due to drought. Older specimens in the home landscape accustomed to water nearly every day, often for past decades, are suddenly limited to just a couple of drinks each week. Trees, shrubs and vines are all valuable woody plants that take many years to mature and thus are highly valuable. They can’t be easily replaced like fast-maturing perennials that can be easily replaced after drought conditions eventually ease. The effects of water limitations or simply changes in the frequency or

water is taken up into the foliage. Other plants with similar roots include azaleas, rhododendrons and magnolias. These cannot change the depth and distance of their root systems like drought resistant plants adapted to seeking moisture far and wide. Once you discover any woody plant is having a problem, give it extra attention. The best reason for harvesting clean wash water indoors is the ability to use it to provide a drink to these stressed out plants in between scheduled watering periods. It’s during low humidity of late summer and fall when conditions are most challenging. When applying your bucket water, consider adding some stress-reducing medicine that is not fertilizer, but vitamins and hormones. You really can’t overdo these because they don’t contain nitrogen. Adding medicine to

every bucket of water can have a much more positive impact on stressed plants. Superthrive has been used by the nursery industry to revive stressed out plants for decades. This blend of plant hormones is mixed at 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water to carry the medicine down into the roots to stimulate cell repair. It’s the perfect way to help surface roots of acid-loving shrubs. This is also a panacea for all woody ornamentals and container grown plants ailing from changes to their water regime. The second medicine is liquid kelp. Bull kelp is the fastest growing plant on earth due to its high levels of the same growth hormones shared by our garden plants. When all sorts of kelp is processed into a rich liquid, you can

mix it into your bucket water where it functions much like steroids do for weight lifters. Liquid kelp is organic, thus ideal for assisting all struggling plants including vegetable gardens in late season to remedy effects of dry, nutrient depleted soils. If not available locally, jugs of liquid kelp are sold online at groworganic.com. As the drought grinds along, be attentive to your struggling woody plants so they don’t succumb to the botanical version of jet lag. Consider them priceless heirlooms that can be protected with waste water and medicine to help them survive. That way when rains return, they’ll be healthy enough to recover quickly, leaf out and bloom once again without losing a single one.

duration of applications inevitably lead to stress in established woody plant. It’s increased by sudden or prolonged heat waves. Dry winds desiccate foliage in just a day or two. Without enough internal moisture to compensate for the losses, the woody plant defoliates, then the twiggy tips begin to dry out and die back. This may be the start of a long, gradual decline. One group at high risk is the acid-loving shrubs such as big, old camellias, which are impossible to replace if lost to drought. They are surface feeders with dense, shallow root systems to access the narrow layer of fertility on the forest floor. When drought dries out these surface soils in between water days, fine hairs of feeder roots die. When water is applied the damaged feeders can’t function as they should, so less

ABOUT REAL ESTATE home that will cost about $4,000 to fix. Will our homeowners insurance reimburse us for the cost of the repairs? ANSWER: Probably not. The typical policy pays only for “sudden and accidental” problems. Termites work very slowly, so their damage usually isn’t covered. Ironically, though, your policy probably will pay for any “collateral damage” that the wood-eating vermin might cause. For example, if termites or other pests decide to dine on a ceiling beam and the roof subsequently collapses, you would have to

pay to replace the beam, but your insurance would likely cover the cost of fixing the roof or rebuilding buckled walls.

We always carry cute little pumpkinlike gourds because they are the ideal seasonal decorating tool. Tuck one or two into an existing display for the feel of fall in a flash. Throw several into an apothecary jar or hurricane or big transferware bowl, and you have a centerpiece.

One of the hallmarks of the Nell Hill’s style is mixing the rustic with the refined, the precious with the everyday. We love the juxtaposition of pairing natural, gritty curiosities, like aged garden statues or found objects like birds’ nests, with the most fussing things in your china cabinet – crystal, silver and china. There’s no more perfect place to put this technique into practice than in a tablescape. All you need do is offset your table settings with organic elements.

so versatile you could transform them for every season simply by pairing them with different accent colors: red for the holidays, blue for spring, orange for summer. For a fall table, we brought in shades of browns through a deer candleholder, an olive oil jar vase and the soft cream of old books used as risers.
