Those unsightly mounds in the lawn It’s about the time of year to begin seeing small mounds of soil appearing in your lawn. The typical report is multiple mounds two to four inches in diameter, sometimes with a hole in the center but sometimes without. There are a couple of insects that can create this type of soil structure but the most common cause in September is the cicada killer. This very large wasp (about an inch and a half long), while quite intimidating at first glance, is usually benign and harmless. Even though the female cicada killer can sting people, it generally only does so when provoked. The male of this species is more aggressive but it lacks the capacity to sting. As the name indicates, cicada killers do kill and feed on cicadas. The mounds are created from the soil removed to create a burrow the insect uses as a home to lay its eggs. The dead cicada is placed in the burrow to provide a food source for the newly hatching wasp larvae.

owner can do is to keep outdoor lighting to a minimum around building entries. It may also help to keep dead crickets swept up as it is thought that the swarm tends to build on itself as the crickets search for mating partners near the end of their life cycle. KEITH REED Under most circumstances, control of these insects is not suggested since they are rarely a problem for humans and cause no disruption to our food supply. If unusual circumstances necessitate control, there are some options. Any “knock down” wasp control product will work. Individual mounds can also be treated with dusts labeled for wasp control. As with any pesticide, read the label and follow directions carefully. Another insect we generally get calls on this time of year is the cricket. Crickets are generally just a nuisance so control measures are not suggested. The best a home-

Signing a quitclaim deed will not clear you of the responsibility of making remaining mortgage payments, nor will it stop a lender from foreclosing on the property. DEAR MR. MYERS: If I sign a quitclaim deed that gives someone else my interest in my home, would I still be liable for making monthly mortgage payments? ANSWER: Yes, you would still have a legal obligation to make the monthly payments -- and the lender could still foreclose on the home. A quitclaim deed merely transfers one person’s ownership interest in a property to someone else. It does not transfer the first person’s

obligation to pay off the underlying loan, nor does it prevent the lender from beginning foreclosure proceedings. Let’s say that the worth of your home is $200,000. If you still owe $75,000 on the loan, you would have $125,000 in equity. If you then quitclaimed the house to someone, that person would own the home and the $125,000 in equity, but you would still be legally obligated to make the remaining payments. You would still owe the bank $75,000, even though you no longer owned the house. And since the property was pledged as collateral for the original loan, the lender could still foreclose and ruin your credit, even though you had
since quitclaimed your interest in the property. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: I bought a duplex earlier this year. I live in one unit, and I treat the other side as a rental. Will the IRS consider the duplex my primary residence or a rental property? ANSWER: The Internal Revenue Service considers your property both your primary residence and a rental, which means you’ll have some extra paperwork to do when you file your next income-tax return. Assuming that your duplex is covered by a single mortgage and property-tax bill, you should deduct interest and taxes on your personal share

Report the rental income the other unit generates, as well as a prorated share of the property taxes and all your related rental expenses, on Schedule E of Form 1040. Consult with a professional tax adviser for details. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: We have a wood floor in our living room. It’s very beautiful, but it squeaks in certain areas when we walk across it. Do you know how to make it stop squeaking? ANSWER: The officials at a Missouri-based trade association

Medallion wall stencil is an easy weekend project By Dena Fishbein Tribune News Service
Wallpaper is making a comeback! You can create the look yourself by stenciling your walls with a custom pattern and custom colors. This is an easy weekend project that can be accomplished inexpensively. I wanted a chic, luxe feel so I used shiny gold paint, but you can use any color to get the look you want. Customize it your way with your own design, or print out our downloadable
medallion stencil at www.denadesigns.c om/blog/2015/wallstencil. Gather: Black permanent marker Mylar sheet X-ACTO knife Ruler Pencil Level Low-tack masking tape Acrylic paint (I used Golden brand “Iridescent Gold Acrylic Paint) Plate or palette Airtight container Rags or paper towels Stencil brushes, either flat-tipped or domed Damp sponge
Create: 1. With a permanent marker, draw or trace your stencil design onto a Mylar sheet. 2. Use an XACTO knife to carefully cut out the design. 3. Plot your pattern. With a ruler and pencil, lightly mark guidelines on the wall. Use a level to check all verticals and horizontals. 4. Beginning at the bottommost corner of the wall, adhere your stencil to the wall with low-tack masking tape. 5. Spread newspaper on the floor
to catch any spills or drips. 6. Put a small amount of acrylic paint onto a plate or palette. Store the remaining paint in an airtight container. 7. Dip the dry stencil brush into the paint and dab it on a rag or paper towel. You don’t want excess paint to run down the wall. 8. Holding the stencil brush perpendicular to the wall, apply the paint. For a speckled effect, lightly tap; for a smoother effect, use a circular motion. 9. Repeat steps
four through seven until the wall is covered. 10. If any paint accidentally drips or gets onto the
wall, you can clean it up with a damp sponge before it dries. The wall should be dry in about 12 hours.
