Horticulture tips for November Well, we’ve made it to November without a real frost or freeze, meaning our first one this year will officially be later than average. Enjoy the remaining color in the garden and count each day a bonus. Beyond that, consider the following landscape tasks this month: • November is a good time to make a nitrogen application for cool-season turfgrasses such as tall fescue. Actively growing tall fescue may need mowing as often as every 34 days under ideal conditions. • Speaking of tall fescue, one of the significant contributors to its decline is the build-up of excess leaves. While it is not necessary to remove leaves as soon as they land on the turf, it is important to prevent them from completely blocking all light, water and air movement. One of the easiest ways to dispose of excess leaves is to continue mowing and chop them into small pieces where they will easily decompose directly into the turf, providing nutrients as they go. At some
Home Grown KEITH REED point, you may still need to collect the excess, but the quantity will be much smaller and easier to manage. Well-chopped leaves also provide a nice head start to the composting process, with smaller pieces decomposing much quicker. • Leaving plants in the garden tends to harbor pests and disease so clean up any remaining plant residue as soon as possible. • This is also a good time to clean up some select ornamentals. The key word here is “some”. Perennials that are a bit cold sensitive should be left alone until next spring. Pruning them now (even though they appear dormant) can set them up for winter injury. Also, plants such as ornamental grasses put on their best show in the winter, making them good candidates for spring cleanup.
• Don’t forget to winterize your tools and equipment. Putting tools away clean and sharp (with a light coating of oil) will pay dividends in the spring. Adding fuel stabilizer to small engines is also another important garden task that will pay big dividends come springtime. • November is also a great time of year to walk the landscape and makes notes about changes you would like to make for next season. For more information of this or any other horticultural topic, you can contact Keith Reed, the Horticulturist in the Payne County Extension office. Keith can be reached via email at keith.reed @okstate.edu, phone at 405-7478320, or in person at the Payne County Extension office, located at 315 W. 6th in Stillwater.

What you need to know about student loan debt and new mortgage guidelines Many of us have accumulated some student loan debt during our education. When preparing loan documents, I often see student loans set in deferment or forbearance, temporarily delaying payments or reducing the monthly payment. New guidelines in the mortgage industry change the way lenders calculate student loan debt, which may affect your borrowing power. Here is the scoop. Loan approvals are based on debt ratios (DTI). A lender takes your income and divides it by your debt
delayed, the amount owed is still figured in the DTI calculation. However, recent changes have lowered the requirement to 1 percent, which improves the DTI, allowing borrowers to qualify expenses. affect many firsttime homebuyers’ options for financing since their DTIs may now be higher, lowering the amount of money they are qualified to borrow when using FHA financing. ABOUT REAL ESTATE been spotted at night on Archer Avenue and roaming the cemetery itself, in the same flowing white dress in which she danced and was later buried. Many witnesses say her spirit gives off an eerie, incandescent glow before going into the fog or cloudy mist that often covers the graveyard at night. *** DEAR MR MYERS: What do you know about the “Devil’s Backbone” in Texas? ANSWER: It’s the nickname for about 4,700 acres of scenic land in southern Texas that’s filled with mountains, ravines, woodlands and -- many swear --
ghostly apparitions. The first reports of unearthly visitors in the area apparently date back to the 1800s. That’s when cowboys who were riding the range began telling friends that they often were shadowed by a number of mysterious figures, including apparitions of Native Americans, a squad of spirits dressed in the full armor of Spanish explorers and even a Catholic Monk. Experts note that the area has one of the bloodiest histories in the entire U.S. They speculate that the restless Native American souls may have been slain by American frontiersmen, or perhaps by the Spanish
explorers. The Spaniards, who often took a monk or friar with them as they fought brutal battles to
expand their empire, may have been killed by the Natives during combat, or simply died from the new types of diseases
they encountered as they moved north from Mexico and South America into the U.S. around 1690.
