Protecting your young tree investment Even though the drought of 20112015 has been erased from the headlines (thankfully), our trees are still suffering the consequences and we will likely continue to lose more than normal over the next several years. We need to continue to plant young trees with the assumption that some of our older trees will be failing soon. While a month ago would have been better, there is still time to plant trees this fall, if you do it soon. Once the investment of a new tree is made, it is critical to follow a few steps to help insure its long term success. These are not difficult tasks, but based on hundreds of observations, they appear to be often neglected. For the purposes of this discussion, we will begin with the assumption that the tree has been properly planted and its water needs are being met. If you have yet to plant this fall, contact the Extension office for advice on proper procedures. Proper mulching is critical. In addition to serving the very important role of moisture management, mulch also helps to limit competition with
Home Grown KEITH REED turfgrass. In our area, bermudagrass is an especially vigorous competitor for water and nutrients and keeping it away from a small tree will pay big dividends over the first few years of the tree’s life. Always remember to avoid piling mulch up directly against the trunk of the tree. “Volcano mulching”, an industry term for poorly installed mulch piled around the trunk, acts as a harbor for disease and insects. At the trunk-soil interface, only a small amount of mulch should be used. The depth of mulch can then be increased to 2-3 inches once you get away from the trunk. The mulched area should, at a minimum, extend a bit beyond the original diameter of the root ball. Proper staking is also important. In a nutshell, allow the tree some movement and make sure the stems/trunk is not damaged by the staking material.
Except in extreme cases, one year should be plenty of time to leave staking materials on a new planting. Your tree may have come from a nursery with a protective wrap installed around the trunk. This serves to protect the tree during the shipping and handling process. This wrap can also protect trees from one of the most common environmental stresses many species face; winter injury, also called southwest injury, or sunscald. Winter injury is characterized by large sections bark splitting away from the trunk. This will almost always be on the southwest side of the tree. It is caused on cold but sunny winter days when the trunk warms quickly with the low winter sun. The bark wrap serves to prevent this overheating. My casual observations tell me that at least half of the maples planted in our area

Problems develop when this product is left on the trunk throughout the growing season. Just like with excessive mulch, wrap can harbor insects and disease. By David W. Myers The cost of a home warranty is relatively small when compared with the protection it provides both parties in a sale. DEAR MR. MYERS: We are getting ready to put our home up for sale, and the agent we have hired wants us to offer a one-year home warranty on the property. She says the warranty would help the home sell faster. Maybe it would, but we don’t think we should have to pay the warranty’s $375 cost, because the policy would only benefit the buyer, not us. What do you think? ANSWER: I think you should follow your agent’s advice by agreeing to buy the $375 home-warranty policy. Offering such a policy could indeed make your home sell faster by providing the buyer some peace of mind. It also could save you lots of additional money and time if something goes wrong after the sale closes. A typical warranty policy provides for the repair or even replacement of built-in appliances,
electrical systems, the water heater and furnace, most plumbing and a handful of other items that might break or wear out. Protection for the roof, a pool or other components of the home can usually be added for an additional fee. You’re incorrect when you say that such policies “only benefit the buyer.” Let’s say you sell the home and the automatic dishwasher or furnace breaks down shortly after the buyer moves in. The company that provided the warranty would pay for repairs or replacement, which would almost certainly exceed the $375 you paid to purchase the policy in the first place. You would not be forced to pay for the repairs yourself, and you wouldn’t have to worry about the buyer dragging you into court over the bill. Though $375 might seem like a lot of money, it’s actually a fairly small amount when you consider how much protection a good policy provides to both parties in a sale. The fact that homes covered by such warranties typically sell faster

is an added bonus. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: Is there a difference between a “title search” and “title insurance"? ANSWER: Yes. A “title search” is a comprehensive search of a home’s chain of ownership and other property records, which is usually performed to determine if the seller has the clear legal right to sell the house. The search helps to ensure that there aren’t any claims against the property that the seller doesn’t know about or has failed to disclose to a buyer. Searches commonly uncover long-forgotten claims, such as
a lien filed against the property years earlier by a creditor or a court judgment that awarded an interest in the home to a former spouse or distant relative. Even if the search fails to uncover a problem, most lenders won’t issue a mortgage to buy or refinance a property without first having the homeowner or buyer also pay for “title insurance.” The insurance policy protects the bank against losses that could be caused by problems that the title search failed to uncover. For example, the policy would reimburse the bank for its
losses if it was later discovered that part of the home stood on a neighbor’s land. If an analogy
helps, think of a title search as you would a smoke detector: Both serve as early warning signs of trouble. Title insur-
ance works more like fire insurance because it reimburses the policyholder for losses after a claim has been filed.

How to warm up home decor for winter By Mary Carol Garrity Tribune News Service
tablecloth, which is harder to launder, I topped my table with two fabric runners, nestled under the place settings so I don’t need placemats. My rule of thumb is to use only two runners on the table, then to put placemats under the table settings at the ends of the table. My centerpiece is about as easy as it gets: A potted plant I grabbed from the floral section of the grocery store flanked by two hurricane lamps. For fun, I looped a fall ribbon through the stack of plates. The ticking napkins are really dish towels. I like their generous size and that they launder so well. When I change my table design for my
holiday look, these cuties are going to replace the nasty, worn out dishtowels I’ve been using for way to long. I can’t seem to ever set my table without using my set of simple white dishes. I’m caught up in their magnetic field, and I can’t seem to extract myself because they are so darn fun and easy to decorate around. Everything looks great with them! I added some texture with my goto wicker chargers and dotted in some color through these majolica dishes. You know me: I can’t seem to have a dinner party without something crazy happening. A few days ago, I had a few girlfriends over for a quiet
dinner when Couscous, our fat cat, decided to liven things up. We had all the windows open to catch the fall breeze while we sat around the table, engrossed in conversation. Couscous, who was out prowling the neighborhood, decided he was coming inside. Instead of meowing at the door like a normal cat, he clawed his way up the arbor behind our house, then launched himself like a cannonball through the open window! Imagine our shock, as we’re chatting away, when suddenly a big fur ball comes flying through the
open window and cascades across the floor with a thump! Scared us all to death, until we saw it was the crazy cat. Then we laughed so hard we cried! THE OUTDOOR SPACES ARE DRESSED FOR FALL This is our second fall in our little lake cottage. But I wanted our garden to look full and mature, like it had been in place for decades. Since I don’t know the first thing about gardening, I hired Bill and Richard to come up with a landscaping plan. Some women overspend on clothing, shoes or jewelry. Me? I have sunk every dime of my

little nest egg into paving stones, bushes and flowers. My wardrobe looks like hell, but my garden is magnificent! I love to spend time outdoors on crisp fall evenings. Most nights, Dan builds a fire and our neighbor wanders by with her dog Augie, our dog Lyric’s best friend. While the dogs run around the lawn, we gather by the fire, wrapped up snug in blankets, unwinding after a long day at work, in our little cottage by the lake. Thanks for joining me at Innisfree, during this quiet respite before the hurlyburly fun of the holidays!

When you have a crazy lifelong obsession with decorating, like I do, and you get to play with new styles, colors, patterns and decorating trends at work all day, it’s hard to pick the one look for your home that’s your favorite. Maybe that’s why I tweak my home decor on a regular basis, especially when the seasons are changing. Right now, as the weather is getting cooler, I’m adding little touches here and there to make my cottage warm and snug. IN MY LIVING ROOM, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PLAID I am over the moon about all menswear fabrics. Show me a paisley, check or stripe, and my heart races. I love how these sophisticated, timeless patterns blend together to make a space rich, complex and unique. But my favorite fabric for fall and winter, hands down, is plaid. You’d think that after I’d been interned in Catholic school for years, dressed in that infamous plaid skirt uniform, every ounce of plaid passion would have been squeezed from my heart. But plaid and I, we are mar-
ried for life. As the weather gets colder, I swap out my lightweight summer pillows for fall pillows, with their heavier weights and richer colors. Every year I indulge myself in some new pillows just to keep things fresh. My new favorite, easy-as-pie trick to instantly warm up my decor is to poke in throw blankets. Especially when they are plaid! I always have at least one blanket on the arm of my sofa or tossed over the back of a chair. I keep a basket filled with throw blankets tucked under a table in the living room so I can pull one out to wrap up snug while I’m drinking my coffee every morning. MY DINING ROOM IS SET FOR FUN These days, Dan and I are a little less formal and a little more spontaneous when it comes to entertaining. I love to have friends over on a whim. To make instant dinner parties stress-free, I decided to come up with a tabletop design I would keep in place all season. The place settings are at the ready, so all I have to do is swoop in after work and dish up the carryout! Instead of a
