Run from the guy pushing annuities Dear Dave, My husband was recently laid off, and he has $229,000 in a 401(k). He has been told that he should roll it into a hybrid annuity. Is this a good idea? – – Durnae Dear Durnae, Absolutely not! It sounds to me like he’s been talking to an insurance agent instead of an investment advisor. There’s no reason to put a 401(k) into an annuity. Annuities are there to protect money, as it grows, from taxes. Well, guess what? The 401(k) is already protecting it from taxes. I would roll it into a traditional IRA in a series of growth stock mutual funds. You’ll have half the fees, the advisor won’t make anywhere near the commission he’d make on an annuity, and you’ll get much better results in the end. Yeah, I definitely wouldn’t go the annuity route. I don’t have a single annuity, and I’ve got a lot of investments. One of the reasons so many “advisors” push annuities is because they wind up with bigger commissions. Annuities aren’t evil or anything, but they’re definitely not the proper product for you in this situation. Get away from

The average concentration of radon in outdoor air is 0.4 pCi/L, but the radon levels inside a home that are 4.0 pCi/L or higher should be mitigated. Mitigation is usually done by sub-slab or foundation ventilation using vent piping and powered, in-line fans and sealing cracks, but the method of mitiga-
tion should be determined by a certified radon mitigator. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has designated January as National Radon Action Month and recommends that all homes, whether old or new, be tested for radon. Do-it-yourself test kits are available at major home and hard-
ware stores or can be ordered online, although a test by a certified radon professional using an active or continuous radon monitor can give you results in as little as 48 hours and can be much more precise. For more information on the risks of radon, visit epa.gov/radon.

Tax reform could knock investment plans off track WASHINGTON -- The small-scale owners of millions of rental homes, parcels of investment land and income-producing commercial and business real estate might not know it, but one of their key financial planning and tax tools is in danger of disappearing on Capitol Hill. House Republicans are working on a major tax reform proposal that, as part of an overall streamlining of the Internal Revenue Code and reduction in tax rates, may eliminate or seriously restrict the use of tax-deferred exchanges – property swaps – under Section 1031 of the code. President Trump has identified tax reform as one of his top priorities, and legislation is expected to move quickly in the new Congress. would be a significant blow to “Mom and Pop” and other small-scale realty investors. According to a study posted on the website of the National Rental Home Council, there were 15.7 million rental homes in the U.S. as of 2015, and 99 percent of
them were owned by non-institutional investors. A study by professors at the University of Florida and Syracuse University estimated that most exchanges involve relatively small properties; in 2011, 59 percent had a sale price of less than $1 million.
Bottom line: If you own investment real estate, and have contemplated a Section 1031 exchange, be aware: There’s a significant possibility that tax reform could knock your plans off track. Keep a close eye on what’s happening, because it could happen fast.

Last week we talked about some key dates for treating lawn and landscapes with herbicides to achieve effective weed control. This is a follow-up to that discussion with some helpful details for the do-it-yourselfer. This also serves as a reminder to those who plan to hire lawn care professionals to treat their lawns. Contact them now so they can do the best possible job for you throughout the season. If you are new to using weed control products, the discussion can get tedious and a bit confusing. Perhaps a few definitions would be helpful. These are simplified for the purpose of this discussion on winter weed control: • Herbicide. A pesticide used to kill weeds. • Pre-emergent. A herbicide that must be applied before the weed seeds germinate to be effective. • Post-emergent. A herbicide that is applied to existing weeds. • Grassy weeds. Plants with long thin leaves featuring parallel veins. Common examples are annual bluegrass and bromes. Vegetable gardeners should note that corn is also a grass. • Broadleaf weeds. With only a few exceptions, any plant that is not a grass. Chickweed, henbit and shepherd’s purse are common examples. • Winter weeds. These germinate in the fall, putting on little top growth but developing a root system in preparation for explosive
