Horticulture tips for February Consider the following Tips for your February landscape. Of greatest immediate concern is the first bullet point. Let’s hope this weekend’s weather forecast holds up: • It is getting very dry, especially near the soil surface. If you have trees or shrubs that have been planted in the last year or two, they could probably use a good watering. • February is the time to control those pesky winter weeds. Herbicide control is much more effective if an application can be made before explosive spring growth occurs. See OSU Fact Sheet HLA6601 Broadleaf Weed Control for Weeds in Oklahoma and Fact Sheet HLA6421 Controlling Weeds in Home Lawns. As always, remember that all pesticides are only effective if used properly. Always follow label directions and do not hesitate to call the Payne County Extension office if you have questions concerning proper use. • Winter tree pruning should be completed as soon as possible. February is NOT the time to prune most shrubs. Spring flowering

Home Grown KEITH REED shrubs such as flowering quince, forsythia, winter honeysuckle, and winter jasmine all bloom on last year’s growth. Wait until

these plants have completed their spring flowering before pruning or cutting back. If you are really itching for spring to be

here, clip a few of these twigs off now, drop them in a vase, and enjoy spring color indoors a few weeks early. • Ornamental grasses and grasslike Liriope should be cut back in February. These plants share a common trait that deserves mention. The leaves that develop will remain on the plant throughout

the growing season. If you wait until spring growth has started and remove the tip of the leaf, the plant will look bad all season. Look closely before pruning and clip just above the growing point of

the new leaves. • Delay pruning for summer flowering shrubs such as crape myrtles and roses until they begin to break bud. This allows you to assess the winter damage (if there was any) so you can

prune as needed instead of giving the plants a generic waist high shearing. • Dormant oil, an old standard for controlling some pests in ornamen-

Tips Continued from page 2 tal and fruit trees, should be applied before buds begin to break. See Fact Sheet EPP-7306 Ornamental and Lawn Pest Control for Homeowners. • Cool season vegetables like carrots, lettuce, peas, potatoes, and cabbage can be planted about midmonth. See Fact Sheet HLA-6004 Oklahoma Garden Planning Guide. Perennial garden crops such as strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blackberries, asparagus and grapes should also be planted towards

the end of the month. While blueberries and raspberries can be grown successfully in our area, Payne County is far from their ideal climate so you can expect some challenges. For more information of this or any other horticultural topic, you can contact Keith Reed, the Horticulturist in the Payne County Extension office. Keith can be reached via email at keith.reed @okstate.edu, phone at 405-747-8320, or in person at the Payne County Extension office.

Hardwood flooring pros, cons By Rosemary Sadez Friedmann

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, January 30, 2015

Tribune News Service

Hardwood flooring is considered a hallmark for floor covering. It has been used for ages and gives a warm and inviting look to any home. The reason I can say “to any home is because these floor coverings range from elegant to rustic in the choices. You can install this flooring in a contemporary home as well as a traditional one. Wood always emits a feeling of hominess so covering the floor in wood will naturally create a welcome emotion. There are those who are afraid of using wood as their main flooring throughout the house. Perhaps some cons you’ve heard come from these facts. Solid wood flooring is 100 percent hardwood that is milled from lumber. Since it is a

Wick A

natural material, hardwood reacts to changes in its surroundings such as moisture and extreme temperatures. These can cause solid wood to shrink or expand. All solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished if needed over the years so they do last forever but there is that maintenance that needs to be addressed. Solid hardwood is not recommended for installation in bathrooms and in kitchens because of moisture in those rooms. Using wood on stairs is beautiful but noisy. With bedrooms upstairs and possibly sleeping children, the wood stairs will send noisy footstep sounds all over the place. Also, safety is an issue. A wood stair is slippery, unlike one covered with carpet. A wood stairs with a runner up the middle will solve those

problems. Realize though, that you are paying for the wood (not cheap) then covering with rug. Nevertheless, it is absolutely beautiful. Here are some pros. Consider engineered wood flooring. It is built up of layers of wood consisting of three to ten layers that are glued together. This multi-ply structure gives engineered wood superior stability, which reduces concerns associated with shrinking and expanding when temperature and humidity change. Engineered wood can be installed in kitchens and in bathrooms so no worries there. Consider a laminate flooring. It has four layers consisting of a wear layer, a design layer, an inner core layer and a backing layer. This layered construction makes

were unveiled at the giant Consumers Electronics Show earlier this month start arriving in stores over the next several weeks. There also are deals on other household items now. ping pro Brent Shelton at bargainhunting website FatWallet.com. He adds that many stores have extended their white-sale discounts to other bedroom and even bathroom products. Prices on sofas, dinner tables and most other types of furniture also have been slashed, with discounts of up to 50 percent, often with 0 percent financing for major purchases.
