Horticulture Tips for March The near-recording setting warm spell last week has put our average gardening calendar in a bit of a tailspin. Many plants are coming on hard and fastseveral; some even weeks earlier than normal. Right now, my gardening instincts are telling me not to try to protect plants like fruit trees that are showing unusually early signs of bloom. My argument is we will likely get at least a few more winter storms and offering protection from light freezes now can only lead to more severe damage later on. Of course, this advice is subject to changing dramatically in the next few weeks! Having said all that, your guess is as good as mine as to whether or not we’re going to have much more cold weather. Just keep in mind, the AVERAGE last frost for us is still six weeks away at April 15th! • For landscape beds and garden plots, it is still easy to control winter/spring weeds with cultivation if done soon. Remember, what is a very small inconspicuous weed right

Home Grown KEITH REED now, can completely dominate the space one month from now. The same can be said for a herbicide application, the window for best control will be closing quickly. • For homeowners that use glyphosate to control weeds on

their dormant bermudagrass, proceed with care. While bermudagrass may still appear dormant on first glance, we are already seeing signs of green up, especially on south facing slopes and up against buildings and side-

walks. • Preemergent herbicides must be applied before weeds germinate. Crabgrass is our indicator weed for this treatment. A reminder that this weed germinates about the same time that redbud trees or forsythia

bushes begin to drop their blooms. • March is a good time to fertilize cool season grasses like Tall Fescue. Do NOT fertilize bermudagrass this month. • Begin planting cool season vegetable crops like radishes, beets

and broccoli. • Wrap up cutting back ornamental grasses and liriope very soon. Most of these plants are already actively growing. Look closely before cutting back as you may want to leave a little more

height on last year’s growth than normal. • Remove any remaining dead plant material from last year’s herbaceous ornamentals. If you don’t have a compost pile yet, now

The home improvement market, which includes both improvements and maintenance, has rebounded considerably from its most recent low point in 2011. The Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) of Harvard University indicated in early 2015 that the upcoming year would surpass the $324 billion spent on improvements during the peak of the housing boom a decade ago. Even though homebuilding and the home industry in general is still not at complete recovery, trends within the home improvement industry do suggest that homeowners have once again become comfortable investing in their homes.

Ramp up for animated living We are fortunate to be introduced to those especially talented designers who raise the bar for all of our everyday living requirements, such as tables, chairs, lights and accessories. One or two select additions ramp up the energy and character in any room. Take Alessi’s famed kettle, designed by Michael Graves, with the bird on its spout that sings when the water boils. Its sleek lines became a timeless icon in contemporary kitchens. Britain’s gifted textile designer Tricia Guild has fashioned an extraordinary array of fabrics and wallcoverings that layer furnishings and walls with uniquely devised colors and patterns. The Eames chair, made of molded plywood and leather, not only deserves a place of honor in well-appointed living rooms, but sits among the best in New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Always on the lookout, I was excited to discover a wildly imaginative collection of furniture, lighting, wallpaper and design accessories at RADform. RADform explains that they hand-pick items from around

From the “mobilier de compagnie” collection, designer Benoit Convers has created a zoomorphic group of tables and storage shelves that function on two distinct levels. The practical bit is evident, with surfaces on which to layer items of interest. But the overall

include fungi, bacteria or viruses and can be applied like chemical pesticides but do not leave toxic residues. Furthermore, they are relatively inexpensive to produce. • Look to the kitchen. Dish soap can be an effective pest killer. Fill a spray bottle with soapy water and spray around the exterior of your house and on plants

that have a pest problem. The soapy water can kill ants and roaches. It also can coat the wings of small flying insects. Catnip is another natural pesticide. Planting catnip in a garden can repel mosquitoes. • Use epsom salt. Sprinkling this salt on the leaves of plants in the garden can keep away animals, such as deer or groundhogs, that would otherwise devour plants. Epsom salt also can repel beetles, slugs and snails. Before homeowners turn to chemical pesticide applications, they can explore many natural remedies to keep unwanted pests at bay.

One way to reduce chemical pollution at home is to find alternatives to pesticides. • Investigate reduced-risk pesticides. The United States Environmental Protection Agency is examining pesticides that pose less risk to humans and the environment than existing pesticides. Homeowners concerned about pesticides can visit www.epa.gov to learn more about reduced-risk pesticides. • Use biopesticides. Tips for first-time do-it-yourselfers

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, February 26, 2016

Many homeowners prefer to tackle their home improvement projects on their own, which can be both rewarding and costeffective. But going the DIY route also carries some risk, especially for homeowners with no previous experience swinging a hammer. Before embarking on their first DIY project, homeowners should consider a few tips to ensure their project stays on course and finds its way to completion. • Assess your skills. Even projects that seem simple can prove complex when unforeseen circumstances arise, so DIYers should assess

their skills to determine if they are capable of completing a project should the worst-case scenario present itself. When researching a project, examine all the things that could go wrong and determine if your skills are such that you can handle those problems. If you determine that you can’t, you can still attempt the project on Safety always should be the top priority when your own, but you doing home renovations. should enlist a friend or relative with extensive a big project that will takes that likely won’t DIY experience to assist impress guests and prove too costly, and it you so the project can establish you as a certi- also gives you an idea of be successfully complet- fied handyman (or how to plan a project ed even if problems handywoman). But not all tutorials are the same, and some may make jobs appear easier to complete than they actually are. If you will rely on an online tutorial to guide you through a project, view several such tutorials before beginning the project. Some will highlight potential pitfalls, while others may gloss over these hurdles. The more tutorials you watch, the better grasp you will get of the full

scope of a project. • Buy quality tools. Sometimes it’s not the person swinging the hammer but the hammer itself that derails a project. Purchase quality tools and materials before beginning a DIY project, as cheap and/or poorly rated tools and materials can put a project in jeopardy or produce poor results. In addition to buying the right tools and materials, invest some time in learning how to properly use the tools, even practicing before beginning a project. This increases the chance that the project stays on schedule, and learning to use your new tools can be fun.
