Take care with weed control products Last week’s rain and this week’s warm temperatures are just what our landscape weeds needed to explode with growth. While I talk about weeds quite a bit in this column, the questions we continue to get in the Extension office suggest it bears repeating. Now is NOT the best time to control these weeds. Is it possible? Yes it is, but it is certainly not the preferred option. Before I talk about why, it is necessary to talk just a bit about the life-cycle of the weeds and the herbicides (weed killers) that we use to control them. Spring weeds such as henbit, chickweed, shepherd’s purse, carolina geranium, dandelion and white clover are actually winter weeds by definition. This means they germinate in the fall, grow slowly during the late fall and winter, and then rush to complete their life cycle in the spring. (Note, it is a little more complex than this with clover and dandelions being long-

Wash out stains in a stainless steel sink By Ed Del Grande Tribune News Service

Q: Dear Ed: We’re installing a new laundry room. We plan for a countertop area complete with a built-in laundry sink for soaking clothes. All the laundry sinks we have seen are

enameled cast iron. But, we want a stainless steel laundry sink and don’t want to install a stainless steel kitchen sink as an easy way out. Can you please give us some laundry sink guidance? – Sally, New York state

A: Since you’re installing a countertop area, a built-in top-mounted stainless steel utility sink can fit the bill. Stainless steel utility sinks are a little different than stainless steel kitchen sinks. Utility sinks are ideal for laundry areas because of

three main differences over standard kitchen sinks. First, in most cases utility sinks are single-bowl style with a little extra bowl depth for soaking clothes. Second, heavyduty stainless steel material is usually used for construction since a utility

sink will most likely be used as a work sink. Finally, extra features can include sound-absorption technology to reduce banging noises. Bottom line: It all comes out in the wash that a stainless steel utility sink can be a nice choice for a laundry room.

Dandelions can be used for spring tonic By Maureen Gilmer

4

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, March 25, 2016

Tribune News Service

Imagine six months of winter with nothing to eat but salted meat, moldy root cellar vegetables and grains. As spring approached, these stores were often riddled with fungus or pantry bugs, or supplies ran out altogether. Inevitably the first unsavory signs of scurvy from lack of vitamin C caused anemia, weakness and swollen gums. In the children, dark days led to deficiencies of vitamin D or calcium, causing rickets, a painful softening of the bones. Add to this the digestive impact of parasites from contaminated foods, and it’s no surprise that spring found everyone in a rundown condition. This is why the ageold spring tonic is a vitamin-rich remedy that helped alleviate these symptoms as early as natural spring growth allowed. The word tonic is strictly defined as “an invigorating, refreshing or restorative agent.” It can be made in the form of a tea, a cooked dish or fresh plants in salads. The easiest way to prepare them was to pour boiling water over a freshly dug plant, allow it to steep into an infu-

sion, then strain and bottle. In colonial times, it was thought to help winter-sluggish blood to thin and start flowing again just as sap was rising in the trees to stimulate new leaves. This is not what makes tonics so effective, however. The key is that all tonics are packed with vitamins derived from the earliest spring greens. The most common ingredient in all of them is dandelions, the first weeds to pop up in the cold days of early spring. Leaves and the thick tap root contain high concentrations of vitamins A, D, C and K, plus iron, silicon, magnesium, zinc, manganese and potassium. The C and D together alleviated the symptoms of both scurvy and rickets just days after ingestion. Even though they are ubiquitous from coast to coast, common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is not a North American native. This Eurasian plant arrived with the colonists, who encouraged the spring food source to naturalize here. It is the easiest weed to identify, bearing the bright yellow blossoms and signature ball of fluffy seed beloved by children. Dandelions are

found in lawns, flowerbeds, sidewalk cracks and open space. However, in early spring you must identify plants by their leaf shape and growth habit alone to find them amidst the early grasses. The younger a dandelion leaf, the sweeter it is. In early spring they are tender and may

be used like arugula in fresh salads or cooked dishes, or lightly wilted in olive oil. Snip only the youngest leaves so older ones remain to support the root typically harvested in the fall. Be cautious to avoid gathering dandelion contaminated by lawn care chemicals or herbicides. Thoroughly wash all

parts prior to consumption. Those that spring up in your organic garden soil are the safest, and most convenient for early healthy tonics. Europeans often weeded out grasses to leave more room for dandelions, which have saved whole villages from starvation during difficult times.

Roots harvested in fall are roasted and dried into powder as coffee substitute. In France the first dandelions are dug, then the early roots and leaves blanched and eaten with bread and butter. Germans eat their wilted dandelions with black bread. In French it’s called

“pissenlit” ("piss the bed") to remind kids not to eat too much of this natural diuretic that occasionally caused bedwetting. This points to another important characteristic that helps spring tonics with dandelion leach out toxins accumulated in the body over winter.

so edible, except for seed. This is why early spring is often the best time to sow your cilantro indoors to prepare to move it out later on when frost passes. When grown early indoors or in a greenhouse, the plants thrive in the cool moist weather, producing large quantities of cuttings. In warm climates, the vegetative phase ends early as temperatures rise and plants quickly go to seed. Therefore winter is the time to start your cilantro so it’s ready to produce when the weather is right. If you saw

cilantro for the first time in its reproductive phase, you might not recognize it at all. When plants reproduce, they bolt into a stiff tall stalk with pinlike leaves that have no resemblance to the vegetative phase foliage. It tastes different, too, because bolting changes the nature of the plant’s chemistry until seeds form as spice or the genesis of next year’s crop. Gardeners often reserve a small place in the garden to grow cilantro perpetually. Here the plants are allowed to grow in a patch where they

go to seed, then self sow to start another crop. Some of the plants will bolt to 3 feet tall and flower, providing much needed summer shade for new seedlings to grow underneath them. Using this method ensures new seed falls, often adding new plants yearround without you lifting a finger. Another good way for urban gardeners to enjoy cilantro is to use a low wide pot and plant it with cilantro seed or store-bought seedlings just like the patch described above. This bowl can be sown again every few weeks

after you remove any plants that are bolting. These bowls thrive out on a fire escape, balcony, porch or glass porch during cooler months. Simply snip the tips with a pair of scissors any time a recipe or dish calls for fresh herbs. To grow cilantro in a vegetable garden, remember it is not amenable to wind. Grow in a sheltered location with bright light, avoiding direct afternoon sun. It thrives under a lightweight floating row cover that offers optimal sun filtering for more harsh climates. Provide nitrogen-

rich planting mixes to existing garden soil to stimulate lush leaf and stem growth in young plants. Grow your own cilantro if you love the flavors of fresh cuisine or freeze it in ice cubes for future use. Grow even more to crush and add to rinse water as you wash store-bought vegetables to kill any salmonella present. It’s sold in every seed rack, all seed catalogs and many gardeners keep the seed and never spend another penny, sowing their own organically grown cilantro seed year after year after year.

How to decorate walls, then and now Walls have always been our own personal canvas. The Victorians dressed them with an abundance of patterned, flocked, velvety wall panels and William Morris prints. The Art Deco movement saw mirrored- and glass-blocked walls, followed by the metallic wallpapers of the 1950s. When I was a girl growing up in Britain, many of the row houses had kitchen murals of far-off romantic places such as sundrenched Caribbean beaches scattered with palm trees ... a far cry from the gray skies of the north of England. Then came the ‘80s and ‘90s, when just about every wall surface was covered in sponged, dragged and ragged patterns with stenciled and stamped floral borders. And now we see patterned wallpaper, florals and glass surfaces in every shelter magazine. It’s all back in vogue, everything comes around again. The dull muted colors of those Victorian papers are now vibrant florals that we use to highlight a focal wall. The Internet has allowed us easy access to artwork that can be blown up to any size and used in much the same way as those 1960s murals. What was wonderful about stenciling

House to Home DEBBIE TRAVIS and stamping was that it allowed us all with little or no artistic talent to create images on our walls. And what fun we had. Panels could be decorated with lemon trees, vines swathed over every door frame, and is there anyone who did not stencil a border around their child’s nursery? I don’t think so. I am sure that many will blame me for the crazy popularity of all those paint finishes, and many of you are still trying to remove the terra

cotta, purple and green sponged walls. It was all about paint. I know, because after filming “The Painted House” for seven years, I painted just about every surface, from walls to toilet seats. Having wallpaper in your home became a definite no-no. I remember pontificating on the wonders of paint, that you could build depth and character with paint finishes that simply was not possible with wallpaper. True then, but no longer. Wallpapers have

What I have always loved about walls is that even if they are a wonderful white, they are the bones of our home and mirror our very own personalities. Add spring to your home decor By Mary Carol Garrity Tribune News Service

Goodbye winter _ spring is officially here. As soon as the excitement of the holiday season is over, I start counting the days until winter gives way to spring, the flowers in my cottage garden start to bloom and the grass and trees turn green again. One of the ways I embrace this season of new life is to welcome signs of spring into my home’s decor. POP PLANTS IN PRETTY CONTAINERS In the spring, I can’t resist buying live green plants, putting them in pretty cachepots and tucking them here and there in my home. My new love is African violets, and I have a pair of them at the center of my dining table. Unfortunately, live plants only have a slightly longer life expectancy in my home than fresh-cut flowers. I always intend to water them regularly and find that window where they have the right light to thrive, but, well ... I get busy, and the plants go from fresh and green to brown and crunchy.

TREAT YOURSELF TO TOPIARY For brown thumbs like me, preserved boxwood topiaries are a perfect pick. Whether they are live or faux, these artfully shaped plants add a structural elegance to a display. We like to cluster groups of different sized boxwood topiaries together to make a bright display, perfect for a centerpiece, side table or kitchen island. SET YOUR TABLE FOR SPRING When the seasons change, I re-evaluate my table linens, replacing the stained or ragged ones with tablecloths and napkins in fun new patterns and colors. One of my favorite tricks is to get a yard and a half of a seasonal fabric, hem it, then place it on the diagonal at my table’s center. This little swath of textile sets the stage for a lovely spring table setting, while still letting the beauty of the table show through. FILL YOUR HOME WITH SPRING FRAGRANCES Creating an inviting environment in your home isn’t just about making it visually lovely. You also want to fill your spaces with a seasonal fragrance that captives you.

SHOWCASE SPRING FLOWERS Pull out your beautiful containers and fill them with spring flowers! English footbaths are some of my favorite decorating tools. I use them year-round to hold everything from florals to potted plants to tumbles of apples, gourds or pinecones. If you don’t have any narrow mouth vases, you need to get some _ they are an essential for those of us who are hopeless at arranging flowers. Snip some blooms from you garden or pick up a bouquet, and use just two or three stems per vase. My favorites? Hydrangeas! I like to cluster several of the smaller vases together for a big impact. Urns are another all-season decorating essential. In the spring, use smaller urns to hold bulbs, like tulips or daffodils. When the weather warms up, you can use the urns in your outdoor decorating. DRESS UP A HURRICANE Glass hurricanes are cornucopias, just waiting to be filled with the best things of the season. In the spring, I like to use my hurricanes as little stages for whimsical displays.

Dawn redwood for high water By Maureen Gilmer

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, March 25, 2016

Tribune News Service

After heavy winter rains flooded much of the Midwest, such extended inundation may spell the demise of many evergreen city trees. With such flooding occurring during winter, most deciduous trees in the area will survive because they are dormant and do not need to obtain oxygen from their roots at this time. Typical river bank species such as cottonwood and willow are naturally adapted to flooding whether leafed out or dormant. When these flood waters eventually recede, landscapes in cities, towns and neighborhoods will reveal the extent of the damage to the area’s landscape trees. There is a single tree that will provide the optimal replacement species for these areas. It provides a great opportunity to

replant boulevards, parks and yards with Metasequoia glyptostroboides, the dawn redwood of China. Closely related to two California natives, coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and giant redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum), this third genera of the redwood clan is the only one that’s deciduous. Thus winter flooding may damage its cousins, but dawn redwood adapted to unseasonable flooding a million years ago. In habitat it thrives in both dry ground and in standing water, proving it is super adapted to soils and conditions often subject to flooding. In many ways this tree blends the appearance of California redwoods with inundation tolerance of another relative, the deciduous swampdwelling bald cypress, Taxodium distichum. Dawn redwood is

a very new tree in horticultural terms. In 1941, the first Cretaceous Period fossils of the species were discovered, then just three years later actual living trees were found in Hebei Province on the verge of extinction. In habitat it is known as shan shui, water fir, attesting to its tolerance of soggy ground. Paleobotanists believe these few trees in southwest China were the remnants of much larger forests that died out long ago as ice ages forced them further south to warmer regions. The Hebei trees became genesis of the world’s cultivated Metasequoia population, so the gene pool is limited. When we plant this amazing tree, we become a part of the worldwide effort of ex situ conservation, which is the act of planting threatened trees in landscaping to protect

them from extinction. From studies of the first plantings of Metasequoia in China as street trees, we have learned much about its curious needs. It is lauded among the very best urban landscape trees adapted to pollution, high water table and dangerously acidic soils. Foliage of the dawn redwood is soft, feathery and bright green, with some trees verging on gold. They develop orange coloring before leaves drop in the fall. At maturity they reach 50 to 90 feet tall with a very pyramidal

form, but after a half century they become more spreading. Roots prefer acidic soils around PH 4.5, which is a problemsolver for areas of high rainfall such as the Pacific Northwest. It is technically hardy to USDA Climate zone 4, but the wild stands habitat is classified a warm zone 9. Such ancient genetics may be why they are thriving in Quebec, where acid rain and cold winter actually creates ideal conditions for growth. When a tree solves many problems like this one

can, it makes an excellent residential landscape specimen that suffers no known pests or diseases. They are sold by most garden centers and are best purchased in larger container sizes, often by special order. They prefer to grow as a single individual because it resents crowding of other trees and plants, perhaps because it is very jealous of its sunlight and will not perform in light shade. This redwood prefers its canopy in full sun and its root zone in cooler ground, so mulch generously in the summer.

When climates change and the impacts of weather disasters demand we replant city, park and boulevard trees after flood, think outside the box. When we can choose a tree that withstood the evolution of the Earth for millions of years, it deserves more attention. If it could speak, just imagine what Metasequoia would say about changes caused by epic volcanoes, meteor strikes and continent-sized glaciers that make our current weather variations look like just a drop in the bucket.

Unfortunately, many cemeteries offer only a fraction of the price that the dirt is worth. To make sure that you’re getting a fair deal, compare a cemetery’s offer to prices of similar plots (preferably in the same facility) that might be listed on Craigslist.org or eBay.com. There also are several registries and brokers who will market the plots and handle

have already filed their federal return can find out instantly when they can expect to get a refund check by filling out a simple form at www.irs.gov/Refund. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: My neighbor tore up his yard as part of a big plumbing project. In the process, he killed a large tree that is on my side of the property line. Can I make him pay to replace the tree? ANSWER: Yes. The general rule is that a neighbor who cuts down, removes or hurts a tree without permission owes the tree’s owner compensation for the harm that was done.

Hopefully, your neighbor will write you a check once you explain how the law works. There’s a chance that his homeowners insurance policy even might pay for the damage. If your neighbor refuses to “do the right thing, you’ll be in the awkward position of either suing the man in small claims court or paying to remove and replace the dead tree out of your own pocket. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: What are the best buys for household goods in March? ANSWER: Spring officially arrives each year on March 20, so many nurs-

eries and homeimprovement stores already have started offering deep discounts on everything from small gardening tools to lawn mowers. Prices for plants and fertilizers are sharply lower now, too. Look for discounts ranging from 25 percent to as much as 50 percent, according to bargain-hunting website dealnews.com. Many of the best deals on big-screen televisions went away with football’s Super Bowl in February. The exception is for 55-inch models, with prices on some brand-name sets that include Westinghouse and Scepter as low as $400.

MYERS: We bought a new home, and the sale closed on March 3. We’re so busy unpacking that there’s no way we’ll be able to file our federal income-tax return by the April 15 deadline. How can we ask for an extension? ANSWER: It’s

easy. Simply fill out Internal Revenue Service Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, by the April 15 deadline. You can get the form by calling the agency at 800-8293676 or by downloading it from www.irs.gov. Getting Form 4868 to the IRS on time will give you a six-month extension, meaning that you won’t have to file the actual return until Oct. 15. You will, however, have to pay interest on any taxes that you may owe. *** REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: Homeowners who

Selling a cemetery plot that’s no longer needed can be a tricky task. DEAR MR. MYERS: My exwife and I bought two side-by-side burial plots in a local cemetery several years ago. We went through a nasty divorce and, obviously, neither of us wants to spend an eternity lying next to each other. Can we sell these unwanted plots? If so, how do we do it? ANSWEER: My, what a grave (pun intended) question. Believe it or not, tens of thousands of unwanted plots are resold every year. As with you and your ex-wife, the decision often is triggered by a divorce and gets even more complicated if one or both spouses later marry someone else. Other times, the plots are sold by an heir who inherits the property from a relative who lived far away. And believe it or not, there’s a fair number of investors who actually buy plots in various cemeteries with the hope that they’ll go

Easy centerpiece suggestions for Easter By Mary Carol Garrity Tribune News Service

12

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, March 25, 2015

I’m not sure why, but Easter is one of those holidays that always sneaks up on me. Maybe it’s because it’s not on the same day every year. But it always seems like, suddenly, it’s Good Friday and I have a house full of guests coming for Easter brunch, and I haven’t done a thing to get ready. If you’re like me, don’t panic. Here are some easy Easter table centerpieces you can throw together in a jiff. EGGCELENT IDEA Now that eggs

Digital subscriptions make staying current easy...

are good for you again, I’ve started having two farm eggs for breakfast every day. I’m hoping the added protein will make my nails stronger! I’m crazy about the brown ones because they just feel more authentic than the white ones. Crazy, I know. When I get the carton home, I take all the eggs out and put them in a pretty bowl in my fridge. It makes me smile as I pull out the bowl brimming with eggs

each morning, like I’m living on a farm or something. And, it makes Dan happy because it gives him another excuse to tease me. So, this is my first quick centerpiece idea: Fill a vintage bowl with natural eggs, either brown or white or the interesting variety of shades you can find from your local farmers now. Sweet, simple and done in 30 seconds. Score! If you want to take this look up a

notch, flank the bowl of eggs with some Easter decor. LIVIN’ LARGE If you have a bit of time and want to knock your Easter table design out of the park, here’s some inspiration. This yummy shot is of my dining room when I lived in my grand old house in Atchison. This was for a formal party – and a book shoot – so we did it up big. But, it still wasn’t overly hard to create. We just layered up dishes from sev-

eral different china patters, then topped each place setting with a glass jar filled with chocolate eggs. The napkins are tied in simple satin ribbon, with a little flower threaded in. The place card holders were a little harder to pull off. We found wheat grass at the local market, tied it up in a bunch and tucked in the name card. The grass kept wilting, so we had to fill the saucer with a bit of water.

SANS CENTERPIECE Here’s another fun idea. This table, styled by a friend of mine for a spring luncheon, doesn’t have a centerpiece at all. Instead, she mixed in her mother’s old china and Depression glass, all in pinks and greens. Each place setting is topped with a petite bouquet. You could snip a sprig from a flowering bush or anything that’s in bloom in your gar-

den. The seed packs add lots of fun, and give hope for the beautiful flowers to come when the weather warms up. EASTER AL FRESCO If it’s warm where you live, take Easter brunch outdoors. Even a simple salad looks sensational when it’s served in a beautiful bowl. No matter how you decorate, make your Easter gathering a true celebration!
