local fire chief, the entire home was engulfed in flames about 90 seconds later. No one was hurt, but the house and all of its contents were destroyed. Skeptics initially thought that the whole story was a hoax, in part because the homeowner changed his story several times before reverting to his original version of events. Others thought the blaze was part of an insurance scam, but that theory was debunked after investigators discovered that Mares had no fire insurance policy.

REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: A famous hoax by the British Broadcasting Corp. in 1957 showed farmers on TV allegedly reaping bumper crops of pasta from fictitious “spaghetti trees,” prompting countless homeowners from across the United Kingdom to swamp the nation’s telephone network in an effort to find out where they could buy the mythical seedlings. *** DEAR DAVE: Contrary to what my mom taught me years ago to always use cold water when sending uneaten food down my garbage disposal, I saw a story on the internet that said I should use hot water instead. Who’s right, my mom or this internet article? ANSWER: Mother knows best. Garbage-disposal manufacturers say

Luciano Mares decided to burn a pile of weeds in the backyard of his home in New Mexico. Though details of the resulting events remain a bit murky, Mares apparently picked up a mouse he had caught in a glue trap and threw the little critter – still struggling to free itself from the sticky tray – into the growing bonfire. Heat from the blaze melted the glue, and the free but now burning rodent made a beeline back to the house. It scampered through an open window and, according to both Mares and the ar

recorded telephone messages urging them to disconnect their home phones for the next few days so their local phone company can use special heaters to “thoroughly thaw out frozen phone lines.” It’s another ruse, perhaps based on one from about 15 years ago that instructed homeowners to disconnect their phones because their service provider was going to blow air through local lines in order to purge dust that had accumulated over the years. Some homeowners were even urged to wrap their phones in plastic bags to prevent the dust from gushing through their handsets and blanketing their floors and furniture. Though most people don’t fall victim to such ridiculous pranks, one study suggests that as many as 1 million Americans each year still do. ***

could earn you up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. The ordinance, approved in 1969 and amended in 1984, hasn’t needed to be enforced – at least, not yet. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: Is it true that some guy’s home was destroyed by a mouse that was on fire? ANSWER: Yes, it’s true. Or, like many tales told around April Fool’s Day, it is at least partly true. I first wrote about this bizarre catastrophe more than a decade ago, not long after homeowner

that you should always use cold water when disposing of mealtime leftovers, in part because it allows any fat or grease to move through the pipes intact. Hot water could melt the fat, which may result in a clogged pipe after it hardens again. It’s best to avoid pouring grease or fat into your disposal at all. Pour it into an empty tin can instead, let the container cool and then toss the container in the trash. *** DEAR DAVE: Is there really a county in Washington State that has a law that specifically bans the killing of a Sasquatch, even if one trespasses on a homeowner’s property? ANSWER: Yes. Regardless of whether you believe in Sasquatch, perhaps better known as “Bigfoot,” a local law in Skamania County specifically prohibits a mere human from killing one. Skamania County (pop. 11,340) is a relatively large, densely forested area in the southwest portion of Washington that considers itself a “Bigfoot refuge.” Shooting one of the apelike creatures

Millions of owners are being told to temporarily disconnect their internet service and sometimes even their telephones for special maintenance. The requests are new twists on earlier April Fool’s Day gags. DEAR DAVE: My wife and I each received an e-mail from the Department of Homeland Security instructing us to disconnect all of our home computers from the internet from midnight, March 31 to 6 a.m. on April 2 so the government can use “cyber spiders” to clean out old emails and spam in order to make the World Wide Web run faster. Is this legit, or a prank? ANSWER: It’s a prank that makes it around the internet, in one form or another, nearly every year --usually around April Fool’s Day. I wrote about this hoax six years ago, and am sorry to hear that it’s back. Though the fraudulent email you received involves the internet, some people in America’s coldest areas say they have received emails and even pre-

We’re all in unchartered waters right now. One thing that has become apparent in this time is a surge in gardening at home. No matter if it’s for food, beauty, to help educate children we now have in our care 24/7, or simply a need to get outside and reconnect with nature, the basic principles are all the same. One of the best resources Oklahoma State University has for learning all-things-horticulture is the Oklahoma Gardening You Tube channel. Youtube.com/oklahomagardening. There are thousands of segments archived and searchable by topic. If you are not familiar with YouTube, the search function can be a bit confusing at first. When you go to the homepage (as noted above), you’ll see a large image at the top. Below that

the yard, erosion and heaved walkways may indicate the need for expensive fixes in the future. Water damage or mold is also a red flag. Find the source of the mold or water damage and assess the costs to repair it before making a decision to buy. Foundation and electrical issues are also red flags in any inspection. Electrical issues may increase the chance of fire and major foundation issues may cost up to $10,000 to repair. 5. Inspections allow for Informed Bargaining. After the inspection is complete, it’s likely another round of negotiations may occur to discuss fixes or buyer/seller cost responsibilities. How these negotiations play out depends on the issues discovered during the home inspection. Remember, very few inspections are perfect. You may ask the seller to repair issues before closing, however sellers are not always motivated to have high-quality work done. Instead, you may want to ask for a price reduction for repairs. You may also ask

for a home warranty to cover the first year in case you need to repair the 25-year-old water heater or other appliances. Work closely with your realtor to determine

how to approach repairs. I am here to help, even if you are not an RCB Bank customer. Feel free to call me at 405-7424871 or email me at jpenny@bankrcb.

How can I get my kids more involved in housework? By Diana Crandall Angie’s List

As we’re all spending more time at home, we’re adjusting to a new way of life and developing new routines. And if you have kids at home, you may be thinking of ways to create more structure in their days. Involving your family in housework is a way to use this time to teach valuable life skills and encourage teamwork _ and to keep your home tidy and organized. Tackle dirty dishes head-on. More meals at home means more

dishes to clean. Depending on the age of your children, they may already know how to rinse their plates, place them in the dishwasher and run the cycle. If not, now is a chance to learn. You can also teach your children to clear and wipe down the table and countertops. And, having them help to hand-wash, dry and put away dishes can emphasize the upsides of working together as well. Take chores outside. As we’re heading into spring, make some time for fresh air and move house-

work outside. Older children can assist with more complex jobs, like mowing the lawn or trimming bushes and hedges. And younger children can help with watering the garden, weeding or repotting plants. You can also teach your kids about how to stay safe while working outside, highlighting the importance of simple things like applying sunscreen and staying hydrated. Organize and donate. If your home could use some decluttering, now’s a good time to involve

your kids in the process. Focus on one room, or one area of a room, at a time. Designate separate bags or boxes for items you can give away, recycle or throw away. Depending on how old your kids are, you can set limits for the number of toys, clothes or other items they can keep. When you’re finished, check whether any local charitable organizations are accepting donations. If there’s nowhere to take them now, stow them away in the garage or storage room until it operations resume

space periodically throughout the day. Fresh air goes a long way in creating a healthy environment. 4. Try to make your home work environment soothing and calm. From textures and textiles to colors that make you feel calm, transform your space into an oasis. 5. Choose a comfortable work chair. While workspaces and desks are important as far as

comfort, a comfortable work chair should top your list. 6. Try to store documents away from your work surface when possible. Keeping your work area neat and tidy will also help keep the creative juices flowing. 7. Bring in living elements such as plants and trees. Greenery will help bring life to your space as well as circulate oxygen.

infect frequently touched areas like doorknobs, light switches, and faucet and toilet handles every day will keep them mindful. You can also use this opportunity to teach the basics of house cleaning, like which types of cleansers to use on which surfaces, and the overall importance of tidying up the home.

Agents are advising clients that if they become sick, they should not attend showings, and if someone living in a home currently on the market is ill, sellers should inform agents and cancel showings, Hampton said. He said it’s too early to tell if Chicago will see a change in homebuying and selling, as Illinois has logged fewer confirmed cases of people with coronavirus than states like Washington and New York. More specifically, there hasn’t been much of a change in the ways sellers show their homes at open houses. “Some sellers have always required that individ-

uals take off their shoes before walking in, because of the carpet,” Hampton said. The survey suggests there might be a silver lining: In California, 12% of agents reported an increase in sellers, who might be eager to take advantage of lower interest rates. Jodi Dougherty, a broker with Downtown Realty Company, similarly said that she hasn’t seen a major difference in how buyers are reacting. “The buyers who want to go out are going out,” she said. “Same thing with the sellers.” Dougherty noted there is more interest from buyers because of the dropped interest rates. She said she has seen an uptick from younger generations in particular. “I have had a few additional people who weren’t going to buy so soon

be a slight slowdown in the next 30 days, but it’s hard to tell with the speed at which events are shutting down and people are isolating themselves. Dougherty said there are a lot of people under contract who need to move, because they already sold their home. “There are going to be buyers out there, people from a purchasing standpoint, halting because they don’t know if they will be relocating to

Chicago now because of the coronavirus,” she said. She said she has a client who was looking to relocate to Chicago, but is stuck in real estate limbo: The airline where her husband is employed as a pilot is telling them to stay where they are. At this point, “there hasn’t been all that much of a change,” Dougherty said. But at the same time, “we’re all waiting in the wings for the next cancellation.”

reach out due to the dropped interest rates,” she said. “The older generation is concerned, whereas the younger generation understands they have a lifetime ahead to recover, so it’s not as dire for them.” The lowered interest rates are also affecting sellers who were planning on putting their home on the market within the next month; those sellers have taken a step back because of the coronavirus, Dougherty said. “We don’t know how long quarantining will last. These sellers whose homes aren’t listed yet are trying to save market time and listing numbers. It is better for them to wait it out for a month and reassess,” she said. She said she thinks there might

If you walk into an open house in the near future, you might notice a few changes: More hand sanitizer or shoeless feet, perhaps. The coronavirus pandemic is causing ripple effects in the real estate market as homebuyers and sellers react to the spread of the disease by adjusting their open house policies and by capitalizing on lower interest rates. A new survey from the National Association of Realtors found 1 in 4 home sellers have changed how they’re showing their homes as the nation looks to curb the spread of the virus. Some of the changes include ceasing open houses, requiring potential buyers to wash their hands and asking potential buyers to remove shoes or wear footies. In two states where COVID19 has shuttered schools and forced limitations on public gatherings, the impact was apparent: Changes were noticed among 40% of surveyed real estate agents in Washington and one-third of those in California. Both states,

Washington and California, have each reported more than 200 – and growing – cases of coronavirus. The survey was delivered to more than 70,000 residential members – including 7,000 in California and Washington – between Monday and Tuesday of last week. Still, the majority of sellers have not made changes to their house-selling efforts. Just 4% of sellers removed their homes from the market and refinanced instead. Nationally, 16% of agents said they had noticed decreased interest in homebuying, which grew to 20% in California and Washington. As for sellers, just 10% saw a decrease. Maurice Hampton, a Chicago broker and CEO of Centered International Realty Corp., said the results from the NAR survey didn’t come as a shock. Still, he hasn’t noticed major changes in the local market yet. “We’re currently not seeing change in behaviors,” Hampton said. “None of the data is really showing much change in the real estate market due to coronavirus.”
