Dealing with tent caterpillar season If you remember last fall, many of our landscape trees (especially pecans) were hit hard with very high numbers of webworms. If you look closely, you can still see evidence of those webs in a few trees. If you look even closer, you’ll see that these trees are putting new leaves on and look just fine. While it can be difficult to make blanket statements that cover all landscape situations, this is a good example of one that will usually hold up: Damage from leafchewing insects rarely causes any long-term harm to well-established trees and shrubs. It looks like we may have a very similar situation unfolding this spring. We are seeing high populations of tent caterpillars on a few plants. Tent caterpillars are not the same species as webworms so large numbers of one does not necessarily mean large num-

Tent caterpillars foods of choice are plums, cherries, crabapples, willows and birch but they will feed on many other species if they get hungry enough. If you are depending on a fruit crop or are concerned about the appearance of very large numbers of caterpillars on your ornamental plants, it would probably be a good idea to scout now for signs of these pests. Once the caterpillars get their “tents” well established, it is very difficult to control them with insecticides so early treatment is important for best success. If you wish to treat after the tents are

well-formed, you’ll need to disrupt the nearly waterproof tent for the products to be effective. Speaking of tent disruption, be prepared for what you’ll find when you do this. Hundreds of insects can be hidden in a tent no larger than the size of a cereal bowl. If you are not a fan of insects, it can be a little disconcerting. There are a number of insecticides (both synthetic and organic) that will control these pests. As always, please be careful to read the label and use the product according to the instructions. Reading the label not only provides the best opportunity for good control of the pest, it also pro-

Concealed tank toilets offer smaller footprints By Ed Del Grande Tribune News Service

Q: Dear Ed, we are remodeling a very small powder room and looking to use every inch of floor space we can. The old bathroom has an elongated toilet, and we have looked into installing a

shorter, roundfront toilet. Before we purchase the new toilet, is there an option for a toilet that uses even less floor space than a round-front toilet? A: First, decide on the budget and scope of your powder room remodeling job. If you’re looking for the

easiest way to install a smaller toilet in place of your elongated toilet, the roundfront toilet can be your best choice. In most cases, a standard round-front toilet should fit the same water and drain connections as a standard elongated toilet. However, if you have to save

maximum space in your new powder room and are willing to rough-in completely new plumbing, a wall-hung concealed tank toilet can give you the minimum footprint. Since the toilet tank is concealed inside the wall in back of the toilet, you can pick up about 10

inches of floor space over standard toilets. Also, because it’s a wall-hung toilet, you’ll have extra foot space under the toilet. Bottom line: If you’re really up against the wall to save the most space, look into a concealed tank wall-hung toilet.

take one of your favorite photos to a copy shop to be enlarged and printed on photo paper. Pop it in an inexpensive frame from IKEA and you’re set. 3. A PLANT Whether it’s a desktop topiary or a potted fiddle-leaf fig, plants will add life to your new apartment, making your new space feel like a home. To keep the plant alive and thriving, select one that’s based on the amount of care it requires _ and what you’ll realistically be able to maintain. 4. BOOKSHELVES A bookshelf isn’t just functional; it can also be utilized to display art and small tchotchkes. In a pinch, you can also place an adjustable shelf by your bedside so it can function as a nightstand. 5. A PIECE

WITH HISTORY Whether it’s handed down from your parents (or grandparents) or scored at a local flea market, a piece with some age and patina will bring a sense of history and sophistication to your new space. Small decorative accessories with a story or background add layers and dimension to even the most modest abodes. 6. NEUTRAL UPHOLSTERY Your taste in interior styles and design eras is likely to change over the years. If you’re just starting out, it’s wise to invest in a piece of neutral upholstery that will stand the test of time. By

switching out decorative pillows and throws, your sofa or lounge chair will be able to easily adapt to your changing tastes. 7. A GREAT TABLE LAMP Think of these as the jewelry of your decor. A great sculptural lamp can not only provide flattering accent light, it can also be a conversation starter, styling centerpiece or focal point of a console or side table vignette. 8. A NATURALFIBER RUG Adding an area rug will warm up your space while providing a soft texture underfoot. Your taste in area rug styles may change over the

years, so opt for a hard-wearing, neutral rug in a natural fiber like seagrass or wool. Layer accent rugs on top in fun colors

and patterns if you want a jolt of personality, or keep it clean with a simple stripe or plain solid for an even more versatile look.

When is buying a home not in your best interest? Mortgage Matters MICHAEL DECKER gency plan for making payments during major life changes. Constantly traveling. Homes require upkeep and monitoring. Some of my clients who travel a lot for work tell me they want to purchase a condo or residence with a home owners association (HOA) that will maintain the property. That’s all well and good as long as you fully understand the extra fees associated with HOAs and property maintenance, in addition to your regular monthly mortgage payment. Home upkeep. Homeownership has costs beyond a mortgage payment. Appliances fail, roofs may have to be replaced, yards need to be maintained and internal and external home repairs may be required. Do you have the money or an emergency fund in place to help pay for home upkeep and improvements? Credit. Your credit score does have an impact on your mortgage loan. If you’re hoping to

buy a home in the near future, talk with a lender now and ask about the cost associated with your current score

versus how it may adjust with a higher score. Your lender can also share ideas on how you may be able to improve your credit score. Everyone is doing it. When I visit a friend’s new home, I admit I get the itch to move. Personal financial desires aside, if it’s a seller’s market, it might pay to wait to buy a home. If your

market is producing multiple offers on homes, they may be selling for top dollar. Waiting for the tide to change may bring opportunities to purchase the home you want at below-market value. Buying a home is a big decision, possibly one of the biggest financial decisions of your life. Take the time to consider your

personal and financial situation as well as market conditions before taking the next step to buy. It may possibly save you money in the long run. Opinions expressed above are the personal opinions of Michael Decker and meant for generic illustration purposes only.

When a client tells me they’re ready to buy a home, I believe it’s my job as a lender to help guide them toward a decision that is best for their financial well-being, even if it means suggesting they hold off on purchasing. Owning a home can be a wonderful benefit, but there are certain situations when it may not be in your best interest. Here are some reasons to consider when weighing your options to buy. No down payment. Yes, there are a few loan options which offer down payment assistant or zero percent down, but keep in mind the fees for these options. In general, most loans without a 20 percent down payment require some type of mortgage insurance (PMI), which will increase your overall cost of homeownership. Uncertain personal situations. Are you thinking of a job change in the near future? Will your mortgage payment be dependent on two household incomes? Are you planning to have a baby? Will there be daycare expenses? Before making the huge decision to buy a home, consider the dynamics of your personal life and have an emer-

Get the blues when remodeling kitchen Dear Debbie: We have purchased an older home, a real fixer-upper. We will be renovating the kitchen in a few years, but for now what would you suggest we do with the drab wood cabinetry? -- Pat Dear Pat: A small kitchen can be instantly renovated at little cost with paint. Here is a great fix without having to replace the cabinets. Choose a color that has a light, bright quality. This year’s color trends show pastel shades of blue that are calm and reflective. These blues combine with whites, or more vibrant shades, to create the right mood for you. For this small apartment kitchen, I chose a robin’s egg blue, which has touches of blue and green reminiscent of a quiet sea. Color uniformity prevents a space from looking too choppy, so I extended the sandy beige wall paint to cover the ceiling. The gentle pairing of pastel shades is enlivened by a white tile backsplash and white appliances. To make an ordinary tile look special, I applied turquoise grout that links to

House to Home DEBBIE TRAVIS the cabinetry and adds a neat design detail. To give the cabinets a professional finish, take the time to remove all the doors and hardware. Repair any holes or cracks with wood filler. Sand smooth. If the cabinets have a coat of varnish, sand to rough up the surface, and then apply a highhide paint primer designed for slippery surfaces. Allow the primer to dry completely before painting.

The glossier the paint sheen you apply, the easier it is to clean the surface. For a busy kitchen, semi-gloss is the most practical, but I used a low-luster paint and was happy with the results. The painted surface does wipe clean easily, and the low-luster adds a feeling of space. The original vinyl kitchen floor was in very poor shape, so I replaced it with a rubber floor. Associated more

with commercial use in hospitals and gymnasiums, a rubber floor is very comfortable underfoot, nonslip, hygienic and extremely durable. It is available in a range of shades and textures, but smooth is best for the kitchen. This floor has the look of slate but is less costly, and more forgiving in a kitchen. ** * Dear Debbie: I remember seeing an episode of one of your decorating shows where you created a collage of pictures and flowers to update the top of a coffee table. It is a pour-on epoxy finish that is equal to 60 coats of regular varnish. It’s popular for commercial spaces, such as restaurant bar counters. Epoxy varnish is also used in arts and crafts projects to embed pictures, theater, plane and train tickets, flower petals and other memorabilia that you choose to display on your tabletop. It can be

applied to trays, ceramics, oil paint and most other materials, to produce a smooth, high-gloss finish that is waterproof and durable. Check

What’s standard procedure for tile regrout? By Angie Hicks Angie’s List

Dear Angie: I hired a contractor to acid wash, regrout and seal my bathroom tile. He did not remove the old grout _ merely sponged over a new grout coating. He says this is standard operating procedure, as we did not contract for old grout removal. Is this true, or did I just get ripped off? _ Angela Katz, Philadelphia Dear Angela: Unfortunately, there are a number of contractors who regrout tile this way, even though it is not a recommended or reliable solution.

People in the industry refer to this practice as “skim coating.” It’s a way of making the area look better without actually fixing it, and the new grout will wear off once the area is used. While you can leave a small portion of the old grout, you need to remove a majority of it. That way, there’s enough room for the new tile grout to bond to the sides – not the top – of the tile. Even if the grout is worn down in areas, you need someone to remove it before applying new grout. Luckily, regrouting tile is a practice you shouldn’t have

to do often. If you take care of and clean your tile grout regularly, you should only have to replace it every 12 to 15 years. Lesser quality jobs or failure to care for the grout may lead to the need for replacement every eight to 10 years. To get the maximum amount of time between grout replacement, be sure to care for it properly. Never use bleach, ammonia or acidbased cleaners on grout. Shower cleaners that indicate you should spray the cleaner on and leave it there also damage grout long-term. Use

a neutral pH cleaner if you want to get more life out of your grout. You should also make sure to remove any excess moisture from the room, as that can damage grout. Squeegee your shower after use, and make sure to use exhaust fans to remove moisture. When it comes to regrouting tile, know what it should cost. Low-priced estimates may indicate the contractor doesn’t offer old grout removal as part of the job. Non-sanded grout typically costs between $5 and $6 per square foot for removal and replace-

ment. Sanded grout, which would be used for any joints with a one-eighth inch gap or larger, costs $6 to $8 per square foot. Cost can vary depending on the size of the area, the type of tile used or the difficulty of the job. Keep in mind that whoever is replacing your grout should also be placing 100 percent silicone caulk in corner joints and around tubs and shower basins. This step is important, because grout has no flexibility. If there’s any movement between a tile and a corner joint, grout will crack.

Deceased builder’s lawsuit can be continued by survivors Many of the victims of deadly mesothelioma worked in the construction industry. Their survivors still have legal rights to pursue compensation for the loss of their loved one. DEAR MR. MYERS: Several months ago, you wrote about mesothelioma. My father worked for the same home builder for 45 years, but retired shortly before he was diagnosed with the disease. He filed a personalinjury lawsuit against the builder and the company that manufactured the asbestos that made him sick, but died before his case ever went to trial. My mother is still in their longtime home and wants to stay there, but the mortgage payments and dad’s hospital bills are making it impossible. What can we do? Can we continue with the lawsuit? ANSWER: First, I am deeply saddened for the loss of your father. An estimated 48,000 men and woman have died from mesothelioma, an incurable type of cancer linked to the asbestos that was commonly used by workers in the construction industry, the ship-building business or U.S. Navy personnel who spent months or even years aboard an asbestos-laden vessel

of energy. It could be an unexpected furniture design, like a reinvented approach to a timeless classic, such as the interesting new wingbacks silhouettes that are so big right now. Or, it could be covering a chair in an accent fabric that pushes the envelope just a bit. BUMP UP THE LOOK OF YOUR BED So many of us save our bedrooms for last when we decorate. Or, we never get around to

designing a killer bed treatment at all. Maybe it’s time for you to show some love for the room in your home that fills you up night after night. Since your bedroom is a private space, out of view to visitors, it’s an ideal lab to experiment with zippy colors and patterns. Do you want to be a daredevil? If so, here’s a fun new bed to inspire you. We brought together two heavyweight champions that pack a place with

irrepressible joy: pink and orange. When you use patterns with this much personality, it’s important to balance them with plenty of cool-andcalm neutrals, like we did with our white accent pillows and snowy white bedding. If you like a calmer palette on your bed, add some personality and pizzazz by mixing patterns in quieter colors. MAKE A FEW ARTFUL IMPROVE-

MENTS ON YOUR WALLS What kind of artwork you have and how it’s displayed can have a dramatic impact on the overall look and feel of your room. I’m not kidding – art is that important for giving a room personality and passion. Art finishes a space with an exclamation point. A trend I’m loving in the design world now is to showcase a huge, almost oversized piece of art above

your sofa or a sideboard. Whether they are modern or traditional, these big statement pieces make you do a double take. If traditional art is your bliss, you can still make a big statement on your walls. Try hanging your artwork in interesting groupings, like grids that stretch from the ground to ceiling. Or, create a montage of varied pieces, where you mix together works in a variety of sizes and shapes.
