Red valerian flowers for landscape By Maureen Gilmer

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, April 15, 2016

Tribune News Service

I fell in love with a flower in the English countryside amid thatched cottages and hedgerows. The plants grow out of old walls and rubble found around centuries-old farms and village gardens. Thinking they were delicate flowers (as so many perennials are in that perfect horticultural climate), I was surprised to learn that Centranthus ruber, also known as red valerian, is not dependent on that mild climate and ideal soils. These are not English perennials but true Mediterranean species that originate throughout the region both in southern Europe and northern Africa and well into Asia Minor. What makes this origin so important is that little summer rain falls in the Mediterranean, so the plants are not adapted to wet ground during the growing season. They would not do well in England due to its frequent summer rain, but nature finds a way. Centranthus just loves to grow in old walls where the masonry is more porous due to crumbling mortar, result-

ing in spaces for roots to penetrate and hold fast. Above all, these elevated locations drain perfectly and ensure dry roots during the growing season. Another important feature of Centranthus is its preference for the alkaline side of the soil pH scale, what the English call “limey. This is why it’s so fond of masonry, because a great deal of lime gradually leaches out of aging mortar to change the immediate root zone pH. For this reason, Centranthus is very popular along the coast where salt air creates ideal soil conditions, particularly at beach houses where soils are very sandy and super well drained. The same can be said for high desert conditions where alkaline water affects pH. California and other locations west of the Rocky Mountains are ideal for Centranthus due to both soils and minimal summer rain. Few perennials are rugged enough to survive mountains and rocky foothills, deserts and a very long Pacific Coast. Yet with that immediate coast, where it easily naturalizes from San Diego to the Canadian border, local fears of

invasiveness grow. The reason the plants spread so far is their propensity to self-sow if spent flowers are not cut but are allowed to go to seed. Often the volunteer seedlings won’t match the flower color of the mother plant. Natural variation within the species can result in serendipitous new bloom colors such as pale pinks, so self-sowing can indeed increase your garden’s color range. This means Centranthus is easy to grow and prolific, qualities much appreciated by those on a strict budget. A single parent plant can yield dozens of new seedlings every year to flesh out a young home garden. The big bushy perennials reach about 3 feet tall and wide at maturity. While it’s a full sun lover, it looks best outside of afternoon exposures in the summer. Centranthus features many named varieties in new shades of red, coral and white. This allows you to blend them into beautiful drifts or simply use individuals where needed in foundation beds or as accents along a picket fence. Centranthus ruber is a superior

nectar flower for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds making an excellent choice for any pollinator garden. Its very long bloom season from late spring through much of the summer ensures valuable insects visit

often over an extended period. The more you plant, the broader your draw of pollinators. Centranthus is an ideal companion for lavender, lamb’s ear, sunrose and Cistus hybrids, all of which originate in this same region. It

neck on the porcelain bowl to the flange on the sewer pipe at the floor. You can check to see if the bowl is loose by facing the toilet and placing your knees or hands against the sides of the bowl. If you can rock or move the bowl, then there is a problem. When I find this problem, I advise the client to have the toilet wax ring replaced. This may require a plumber because of the amount of water that has to be removed and the weight of the toilet that has to be moved without doing additional damage.

If the ring has been leaking for a long time, the floor under the toilet may be damaged as well. There should be access to the floor from a crawl space or basement. From there, the flooring can be easily repaired without having to replace the bathroom floor covering. Brace the decayed flooring from underneath and replace the toilet flange using longer and stronger bolts. A new wax ring is installed, and the toilet is reinstalled on the new ring.

Use tile for stylish room divide Open-concept design has much going for it. For those who enjoy a feeling of space in their living quarters, even a tiny area will appear roomier if there are no barriers in the way. Many of today’s new condominium and small home designs utilize fewer walls to maximize the square footage. This leaves the living setup for each of us to devise. Furniture layout has become very versatile, with seating and tables arranged so they do double duty. Dining and work surfaces commingle, sofas hide beds, storage fits neatly away under benches and ottomans. There is, however, a demand for some kind of separation in open-concept spaces so that we can at least partially shut down one activity and enjoy a singular, cozier mood. You can set up an intimate conversation area facing a wall that is decorated to be a favorite focal point. It could be a fireplace wall, or an intriguing display of books, art and collections. Another option is a room screen that can be moved easily to block out one area from another. Screens just have to be high enough to hide an area when

Screens are easy to decorate with paint or fabric, and you can create entirely different looks on each side. Here’s an alternative that is resourceful and striking. No longer just for the kitchen and bathroom, today decorative tiles are featured in more unconventional areas, including living and dining room walls and halfwalls, and on furniture. I discovered this floating wall in The Serras Hotel Barcelona, hoteltheserrasbarcelona.com . One side is tiled and serves as the bed’s headboard, while the side facing the sitting and dressing area is finished in a rich, textured gray fabric. Tile is the big story here. The hotel’s designer, Eva Martinez, in tribute to Barcelona’s industrial past, has mixed a contemporary design style with the application of traditional tiles

that characterize this bustling city’s streets and iconic architecture. Barcelona shows its history underfoot, as the wide streets and laneways are paved in panots: decorative concrete slabs. Famed architect Antoni Gaudi’s signature swirling, under-the-seathemed motifs decorate expansive sidewalks. Gaudi’s naturalistic buildings feature colored tiles on the exterior. Another famous tile design that shows up in courtyards and pathways is architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch’s “The Rose of Barcelona.” You can create your own masterpieces on floors and walls, as Barcelonathemed tiles are available. Check out your tile store or search online for inspiration. Although specialty tiles can be costly, they can be surrounded by lessexpensive plain slabs. The impact of a unique pattern is more dramatic with a simple frame. Because there is

Time to change gasoline in all equipment to insure the pipes are not blocked or clogged with debris. It’s time to clean, caulk and seal windows and doors. Winter weather can cause caulking to crack or come loose, and a tight seal will ensure a cooler, dryer home. Check the roof shingles for wind damage. Many areas have experienced

extremely strong winds that can lift and damage roof shingles. You can use binoculars to get a close-up view of most, if not all, of the roof area. I do not recommend inspecting from a ladder or by walking on the roof. If you suspect a problem, contact a licensed roofer. Winter weather

can lift and damage concrete walks, steps, patios and driveways. Check for cracks or movement. Cracks can be filled with caulking or a hand mixed slurry of sand and cement. Concrete that has settled can be professionally repaired by pumping an expanding foam product through holes drilled in the slab.

Alimony used to boost mortgage-approval chances Most lenders will consider alimony payments received from an ex-spouse when reviewing a loan application, but only if certain conditions are met. DEAR MR. MYERS: I got divorced about two years ago and now collect $600 each month in alimony from my ex-husband. Can I declare this money as extra income on a mortgage application in order to boost my chances of getting a loan to buy another house? ANSWER: Yes, most lenders will consider alimony that a prospective buyer receives as income when reviewing a mortgage application, but only if certain conditions are met. For starters, the bank likely will want to see a copy of your divorce decree or similar document that clearly spells out how much in alimony you will receive each month and when those payments will stop. That way, the bank will have the assurance that you can take your “ex” to court if he falls behind on his alimony checks or quits writing them altogether. Most banks insist that your decree shows that those monthly checks you collect will continue

About Real Estate DAVID MYERS to arrive for at least three years from the date that the mortgage application is filed. That provides a lender with at least some level of assurance that the person who collects the alimony support will have some time to get a college degree or find a better-paying job. Many lenders also will want proof that the alimony payments have already been arriving on a regular basis, usually for at least a year or so. Copies of cash receipts that you may have given to your former spouse might suffice. So may copies of your own bank statements, especially if the money is automatically taken out of his checking or savings account each month and electronically transferred into yours. Talk to several lenders and mortgage brokers for details. Also, use those discussions to get pre-approved for a loan so you’ll know how much you can borrow -with or without getting credit for the alimony you receive. ***

REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: Despite the widespread belief that couples who live under the same roof before marrying have a lesser chance of eventually getting divorced, the National Survey of Families and Households reports that “unions begun by cohabitation are almost twice as likely to dissolve within 10 years compared with all first marriages: 57 percent to 30 percent.” *** DEAR MR. MYERS: My late grandfather was a big New York Giants (baseball) fan when they played in the Polo Grounds until the team moved to San Francisco in the 1950s. I live near Chicago

now, but is the Giants’ old stadium still there? ANSWER: No. It was demolished in 1964, long after the Giants headed west in 1957. It’s now the site of four 30-story apartment buildings known as Polo Grounds Towers, with a total of 1,616 apartments and more than 4,000 residents. In the 1950s, your grandpa would have paid about 75 cents for a seat in the Polo Grounds’ bleachers. The average ticket price for so-called non-premium seats at all major-league parks today is about $30, according to a study by sports-oriented Team Marketing Report. Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, where my beloved Dodgers played before moving to Los Angeles, was demolished in 1960 and was replaced by another huge apartment project. Arlington Stadium in Texas, former home of the Rangers, was torn down in 1994, and much of it now is a grassy field.

The Houston Astrodome, billed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” when it debuted as the first domed baseball stadium in 1965, hosted the recent college basketball championship game and eventually may become a massive indoor park. And Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium, where Hall-ofFamer Hank Aaron hit his then recordsetting 715th home run in 1974, was imploded in 1997 and now primarily serves as a parking lot for the Atlanta Braves’ new home, Turner Field. These great ballparks, and many others, are now gone. But baseball season has begun, so all is once again right in the world. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: So, Dave,

what are the best buys for my home in April? ANSWER: April isn’t a particularly good time to buy many types of household items, in part because there aren’t any holidays for retailers to hold major three-day sales. There are still good prices on plants and gardening equipment for the green thumbs among us, but that’s about it. Still, if you missed out on the deep discounts on household tools, big appliances and mattresses that were offered earlier in the year, don’t fret: A little patience will go a long way toward saving money if you delay your next purchase for another six weeks or so, reports Benjamin Glaser, an expert shopper for bargain-

hunting website DealNews.com. “Department stores almost always roll out special sales for holiday weekends, and Memorial Day (sales from May 27 and go through May 30 or 31) usually provides excellent discounts on select home items,” notes Glaser. “If you wait until May, you’ll find tools that are up to 50 percent off, large appliances for about 30 percent off, and mattresses that get an extra discount of 10 percent to 40 percent off. “In fact, for the past few years, we’ve seen much deeper discounts on mattresses in May than in April,” Glaser adds. “Therefore, any discounts you see this month will very likely get even steeper if you wait."

Pecans are an important Oklahoma crop. Annual production can vary widely depending on the year but we typically rank in the top six or seven states in the country in total pecan production. It is interesting to note that even though our total production is high, we are a bit of an outlier when compared to other pecan producing states in that the majority of our nuts come from native pecans, not improved varieties as is the norm. Improved pecan trees are produced by grafting a desirable variety on to the rootstock of a native pecan. Simply planting an improved nut, such as Pawnee, will not guarantee the grower a Pawnee producing tree. Attempting to successfully graft a tree can be a bit intimidating. It is one of those things that can easily be written about and described-in theory. In actual practice, it is a balance of art and science with learning from a master and practice being the best teachers. Timing is also critical as the window for a successful graft opportunity is only open for a brief time every year. That window is fast

Monograms make life beautiful By Mary Carol Garrity

Monograms are magic, in my book. Take an ordinary piece of cloth, like a pillowcase or napkin, and embroider on a monogram, and you’ve transported it from ho-hum to tres chic. Monograms, which date back to ancient Greece and Rome, came of age in the Victorian era, when the aristocracy turned embellishing their personal items with their initials into an art form. Soon everyone had the fever. Including me. I’ve been crazy about monograms for decades. Intertwined letters are a personal creative expression. They link people and families together. They make everyday life more beautiful and luxurious. Whether I’m decorating my own home or those of friends and customers, I often use monograms to make a space special. Here are some of my favorite ways to use monograms in decorating and daily life:

ACCENT WITH MONGRAMMED PILLOWS

a monogram? Twice the drama. When you’re monogramming an item for a husband and wife, or partners, with a shared last name, traditionally, the last initial is placed in the center and in a larger size. The initial for the wife or one of the partner’s first name is placed on the left side and the initial for the husband, or second partner, is placed on the right. For every rule, there is an exception: Sometimes using your initials in this order will spell words you don’t want decorating your home. Feel free to modify! When doing a monogram for an individual, the last name initial goes in the center in a larger size. The first name initial is on the left and the middle initial is on the right. Another great option is to simply use the letters of your first and last name. While monograms look sensational on solid fabrics, don’t be afraid to put them on patterns.

MAKE FURNISHINGS UNIQUE

make it exceptionally beautiful by decorating it with a monogram. I’m crazy about monogrammed upholstered furniture, and we do this all the time. It takes a few extra steps, but it’s well worth it. Another tip when you are selecting a monogram is to pick a font and color scheme that suits the size and style of the object you are having monogrammed. For instance, if you are monogramming tip towels for your formal powder room, you’ll want something that looks a bit more elegant. If you’re monogramming a headboard for your little boy’s room, you might want something a bit more playful. When it comes to my own bedding, I’m partial to toneon-tone monograms in creams because it’s so elegant. Here’s a fun treatment we did for a designer show home event a few years ago. This lovely old iron bed needed a little punch, so we made a slipcover for the headboard, personalizing it with a monogram.

MAKE DINING SPECIAL

All by themselves, When a friend of accent pillows have I think the ultithe power to change mine had a lovely mate in dining luxup the look of a sofa, antique chair refin- ury is using monochair or bed. Add in ished, she decided to

grammed linens on your table. One of my favorite tricks since we moved into our lake cottage is to use dish towels for napkins. I really like their generous size and how well they launder. And, when I grow tired of them on my table or they take on a few too many stains, I convert them back into dish towels, replacing those that are work out. This spring, I’m spoiling myself just a bit and having these cute blue and white towels monogrammed with bright pink initials. I think they will look sensational with my blue and

white dishes. When I entertain more formally, I like to use the monogrammed napkins I’ve been given as gifts or found at flea markets or antique stores. If you love old linens as much as I do, you’ll be thrilled with any monogram – not just your own. Right now I have two different sets of antique napkins that feature beautiful raised monograms that aren’t mine. The script on the napkins is so elegant – and unreadable – that you can’t tell whose initials are on them.

CELEBRATE LIFE EVENTS Having something monogrammed for yourself or as a gift is a great way to mark a big life event. A wedding, the birth of a baby, the passing of a loved one. This spring I’m giving a few brides monogrammed pillows for their wedding gifts. I picked a 16-by30-inch size because it’s perfect for the center of a sofa or a bed or a window seat. One side will have the initial of the cou-

ple’s last name. The other will have their combined monogram. I picked gray and cream, a classic combo that will go with anything in their home. I also love monogrammed jewelry. When my dad passed away, another friend gave me a gold charm with Dad’s initial on it, and I attached it to a bracelet that I wear every day. I feel like, in some small way, it keeps him here with me. Monograms have that magical ability to link us to the past and the future.

dens of plant lovers, the textured Asian traditional urn surfaces of ancient excavated ceramics are copied today with imports. It’s also popular to add sticks to a narrow mouth urn from agave stalks to bamboo, for a more vertical effect without adding maintenance. If you wish to integrate plants within your urns, use a different strategy. The size of the mouth and body are crucial because these are rarely planted directly but used as a cachepot to contain larger pots filled with plants. This is better than actually filling the urn with earth due to potential oversaturation deeper down which is deadly to succulents and problems with white minerals and overall weight.

Small urns for small spaces can be used to hold traditional nursery grown patio plants from one-gallon sansevieria of midcentury modern or cascading petunias in a hanging basket. Larger urns should strive to hold a five-gallon nursery pot. The larger container allows you to buy a new plant each year to give your urns a fresh look for the season. A trick to support the nursery pot is to obtain a few others of the same size and stack them upside down inside the urn until they bring the base of the five-gallon pot to the right level. You want to see the plant but not the ugly black pot. Be

sure the urn’s drain hole is free flowing so when you water plants the drainage won’t build up inside. Be prepared to spend money on your urn knowing it will move with you if you ever relocate. For gardens suffering drought, consider this the ultimate improvement for a beautiful yard without adding water demand. Who knows, maybe when rains return you can repurpose it into a fountain. Make it visible from oft used interior windows to enjoy this year’s creative endeavor every day. Add just the right plants for a jewel-like setting to discover the sophistication that

was so lacking before, on estate, suburban yard or city courtyard.
