No longer considered a more feminine color, pink is now the new neutral. It’s indeed a unique color that can serve as a partner color. LIGHT PINK Lighter pinks are very soft and have a lot of white undertones. When looking for a solid, neutral color, light pink could be a perfect choice. Light pink can serve as a neutral the same way as a nude, white or even soft gray. Light pink can also help set a relaxing, calm mood. MAUVE Medium pinks such as mauve, which were incredibly popular in the mid-1980s, are now popular again. Mauve can either
serve as a filler color, if you’re looking to create a three-color palette, or as a bold standalone color that works well with charcoal gray and black. HOT PINK Hot pink this season is considered to be bold and fresh. Similar to crisp colors such as chartreuse, hot pink
when used properly can perk up a room and add unexpected interest while making a strong color statement. What is also great about hot pink is unlike perhaps in decades past, it is considered to be genderneutral, capable of being used in a living room, family room or master bedroom.

because they grow vibrantly in the sunshine. Their round, flattish shape allows butterflies to perch momentarily and get nectar in the center. And you may also see butterflies alight on flowers growing in roundish clusters
such as verbenas, milkweed, joe-pye weed, lantana and phlox. A couple of other things that will help butterflies love your garden are a basking stone in the sun and a little puddle of coarse sand, from which they can gain min-
erals. The basking stone could simply be a small, flat rock that gets direct sunshine early in the day. It’s a place for them to warm up and prepare for their day. Another nice thing to do for them is to put a shallow pan of wet,
coarse sand near the nectar plants. They will drink water and gain minerals. These flowers are not prone to insect infestations. That’s good because when you want to attract and nurture butterflies, put away your insecticides.

Tips to make our balcony more blissful Dear Debbie: Our condo balcony has a great view, but not much space. How can we make the most of it for sitting and eating outside? Also, privacy is an issue, as the adjoining balcony is only partially blocked off. Thank you. -- Marilyn Dear Marilyn: Begin by thinking realistically about how many people you want to be able to seat on your balcony. If it is small, I am guessing you can make a comfortable arrangement for four. I admit to liking black and white, while my partner is more color oriented. We know you will have a compromise. -Daryl Dear Daryl: You can definitely have fun compromising with these shades. Start with your black and white palette in the dining room end,
as it will set up a theatrical, dramatic atmosphere that is perfect for dinner parties. Try a soft matte charcoal back wall, white table (or tablecloth), black and white or gray china and napkins. All very sophisticated. Turn on the color in the living room. Go neutral with the sofa, then choose one or two side chairs in your favorite color – pastel blue, rose pink and new leaf green are on trend, so will be easy to find. Mix and match colors and patterns in the throw cush-

Hang white draperies. Frame artwork in black or white. Add a touch of color to the dining table with a few simple blooms. Finish with a stunning piece of art to hang on the matte black wall. This will be visible to both areas and can radiate with your combined styles.

‘Popcorn’ ceiling raises issue for recent homebuyer Textured, “popcorn” ceilings are still popular among many homeowners. One recent buyer, though, claims she got more than she expected to chew. DEAR MR. MYERS: I purchased a home in February. The sellers had put in a fresh, new “popcorn” ceiling in the living room just before they listed it for sale. A week after I moved in, a large chunk of the popcorn fell to the floor and exposed lots of cracks in the original ceiling. I paid a contractor nearly $4,000 to have all of the popcorn covering removed and all of the cracks (more were found) patched. Is there any way to get the money that I paid for the repairs reimbursed? ANSWER: Yes. You have a few options to try to get your money back, though none of them is 100 percent guaranteed to be successful. So-called popcorn ceilings – sometimes called “cottage cheese,” “stucco” or (more accurately) an “acoustic” ceiling – still can be found in millions of homes across America, even though their popularity began to wane in the 1980s. It’s a relatively inexpensive way to add a rough texture to a

the use of storebought chemical liquids like Drano or Liquid-Plumr. I wish that I had saved that column, because I don’t recall the details. Can you help? ANSWER: Sure. I always like to answer these types of questions as “Earth Day” (April 22) approaches, a day that’s set aside to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Most over-thecounter drain cleaners are safe to use in homes that have either plastic or metal pipes, providing that you follow all of the instructions on the bottle’s label. But even then, the chemicals in the
solution wash down into the sewers and eventually wind up in our oceans or lakes, posing a serious threat to fish and other wildlife. Fortunately, there’s often a cheaper and more eco-friendly way to go that often works just as well as storebought cleaners. Just pour about half of a small box of dry baking soda down the clogged drain, follow it with a halfcup of vinegar, and quickly cover the drain’s opening tightly with a towel or rag. If you have a double-sink, you’ll need to tightly cover the other drain too. Interaction between the baking soda and vinegar will create a mini-
volcano, much like the ones that countless children have used for their gradeschool science fairs, but the rag that’s stuffed in the sink’s hole should force the explosion downward and blow out all but the nastiest of clogs. Pour a gallon or two of boiling water down the drain 30 minutes later to clear out any residue. *** REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: Though Earth Day was the brainchild of late U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson, D-Wis., and first celebrated in America in the early 1970s, it is now officially observed in 192 nations around the world.

with such work is going to vary according to the logistics of your house. How big is the new support beam and where will it go? Do you have to re-route HVAC ductwork and electrical wires? Will you need new drywall, trim and paint? The total project could cost anywhere from $1,500 to more than $8,000 depending on its complexity. HOW TO IDENTIFY A LOADBEARING WALL To identify interior load-bearing walls, start in the basement or the lowest level of the house and look for beams or columns that appear to hold the weight of the floor above them. In an unfinished basement, it should be easy to pinpoint as a large beam, usually made of metal, running from one side of the room to the other. It may have posts supporting it in the middle or it may just sit on top of the outside wall or
foundation. It can be a bit more complicated to recognize a loadbearing wall if it’s hidden behind drywall in a finished room, which is why hiring a licensed contractor is always recommended. Consider a qualified general contractor, structural engineer or architect for the job. OBTAIN A PERMIT BEFORE REMOVING A LOAD-BEARING WALL You’ll need a permit from your local municipality to remove a loadbearing wall. Having a kitchen that opens up directly into the living room is great for entertaining, but the city is going to want to make sure you follow building codes during the remodel. Also, don’t be surprised if they send an inspector to check out the work during the process and once it’s completed.

A trilogy of native daisies By Maureen Gilmer Tribune News Service
There is only one flower used in the age-old “love me, love me not” petal plucking tradition of childhood. It is the daisy, the signature of the composite family where all flowers share the same structure. The form is the most advanced, which is why it’s often the last family in botany books organized from primitive to more evolved species. Three North American daisybearing plants have proven themselves time and again as the most vigorous, floriferous and appealing to pollinators in our gardens. Hardy to zone 3,
they constitute the trilogy of species that every new gardener should strive to recognize because they are the most basic perennials. All live a long time, yield many new free plants and produce seed you can save for large-scale planting next year. ECHINACEA PURPUREA, PURPLE CONEFLOWER, EASTERN U.S. The large magenta pink flowers of this eastern wildflower drop their petals after pollination, maturing into a sparkling cone that holds maturing seed, hence the name. Adapted to regions of summer rainfall, this is an exceptional plant that may naturalize there, or when irrigated they thrive
further west. Elegant yet tough, this beauty is adapted to prairies and wayside places where it prefers full sun, well-drained soils and moderate moisture. Modern varieties offer orange and white flowers but these plants may not be as large or vigorous as the native. RUDBECKIA HIRTA, BLACKEYED SUSAN, CENTRAL U.S. Often called “gloriosa” daisy, this yellow perennial has big brown centers that look like an eye. It can be found in nearly every state as a wildflower where unique, naturally colored blooms evolved into new varieties. It grows quickly from seed so these natives came

GAILLARDIA ARISTATA, BLANKETFLOWER, WESTERN U.S. You’ll see this perennial wildflower in the dry western states where it has become popular color in the arid zone gardens there. Though the species itself is modest, there are more super-looking varieties of this perennial than any other. A number of named varieties bring bright sunset colors into droughty landscapes. As the season passes be prompt in clipping off the flowers as soon as they wilt so new ones are encouraged to form. When blooming slows, allow the last flowers to remain and go to seed so birds will come to feed. Lost seed also allows plants to self sow in your garden if conditions are right. As new gardeners put down the iPhone and get their hands
in the soil, it’s time to get back to the basics which create the foundation of future gardening endeavors. Consider these vigorous daisies the optimal gateway plants capable of driving passion for natural beauty and native species. Give them as gifts to inspire and encourage the love of native plants. single stem dwarf types sold as cut flowers, which look like mini-mammoths. These are short lifespan plants averaging 60 to 80 days for quick harvest. The branching varieties are quite similar in growth habit to those wild sunflower progenitors of the Indian gardens, and thus more recognizable to birds and pollinators. Most are 90- to 110day plants with a few exceptions. Colors range from the standard sunflower to browns and reds and oranges with a number of double forms that are even more ornamental. All evoke memories of van Gogh’s sunflower paintings, where we see some of these early varieties in vases rendered by an impressionist.
One of the best selections of reliable decorative sunflower seed varieties is at Johnnyseeds.com. They offer a useful comparison chart in the print catalog that shows at a glance each of the 30-plus varieties’ flower size, plant height, flower color and days to bloom. It’s a big help with choosing the best sunflowers for your individual garden at about $3.95 per packet of 50 seeds plus much larger quantity discounts. Branching varieties produce lots more flowers but can become a bit rangy over time. These produce flowers the size of a dessert plate held on a multitude of stems. It’s common to cut the top bud when they reach a desired size
to force side branching and more flower production. These branching varieties integrate nicely into a wide range of spaces as a decorative flower. The more you bring into your garden, the greater your pollinator draw. For large projects or for those with big landscapes, rural homes, farms and little money, consider sowing black sunflower bird seed wherever ground is disturbed. Rake in before an expected spring rain to sow on a large scale and naturalize. The result is ideal wildlife food source where sites have lost habitat due to grading. This idea re-establishes the original native type wildflowers that will self sow for genera-
tions to come. The best time to plant sunflowers is after the last frost date in your area. For best results, choose locations where you can improve the soil with compost and manure since sunflowers are all heavy feeders. Compost also helps improve drainage and water holding capacity
depending on your soil type. Even if you’ve never grown flowers in your life, you can find great success with branching sunflowers. For a few dollars, turn your yard into Pollinator Heaven, but later on the birds will come to extract those seeds for great entertainment long after the color is gone.

mention the improvements in nearby pond water quality. • Assess the goals for your landscape. If your plants don’t need it, don’t apply it. Let’s use a bermudagrass lawn as an example. Bermuda responds very well (meaning grows fast) with regular applications of nitrogen. If your lawn sees a lot of human or pet activity, it may well need this fertilizer to maintain good turf cover. However, if it does not get much
traffic, over application simply leads to more mowing than necessary. Lawn color is another point of discussion. Somewhere along the way, the definition for a healthy lawn came to be “lush and dark greenâ€?. This is not necessarily the case. Color should only be one consideration in determining lawn fertility needs. This is an area where perhaps the greatest change we can make is simply one in our expectations. • If you hire a
professional to do your lawn care, don’t be afraid to have a conversation with management and ask what they are applying and why they are applying it. Does their plan line up with your expectations? Are they choosing product based on a soil test or is it a “one size fits all? For more information on this or any other horticultural topic, you can contact Keith Reed, the Horticulturist in the Payne County Extension office.

A common problem in the urban landscape is dealing with unsightly algae/weed growth in small ponds. In most cases, the algae/weeds are not the heart of the problem, but a symptom of it. There are a variety of factors that can lead to this including several that are beyond the practical control of the homeowner such as dramatic weather changes/events, improper pond construction, and fluctuating water depth. However, one key issue is something that many of us can help correct with relative ease. Runoff of excessive fertilizer (especially phosphorus) from improperly applied lawn fertilizer is a major contributor to excessive weed and algae growth. Improper application can mean several things including: • Fertilizing immediately before a heavy thunderstorm. If fertilizer has not had a chance to dissolve into the soil, it moves with water very freely and will follow storm runoff right into the nearest creek or pond. • Application of un-necessary nutrients. We are fortunate in Payne County in that our soils usually contain adequate levels of most of the critical
