Know how many chilling hours your local climate produces in order to avoid those trees that ask for more than you can give. Get the right size. Fruit trees are grafted in ways to make them smaller and better adapted to your backyard. The original fullsized trees are recommended where deer are a problem so eventually fruit is produced beyond their reach. Semidwarf trees are about 30 percent smaller, making the fruit more accessible where space is limited. They are also easier to pick and prune than standard sizes. Dwarf fruit trees are even smaller yet and make a fine choice for fruit in the heart of the city. Spring cleanup: Focus on craft room By Sandi Genovese Tribune News Service

It happens every year at this time. The combination of a new year and the approach of spring inspire me to clean up, toss out and get organized. Some years I focus on my wardrobe, other years I focus on my home, but this year I turned my attention to my office/craft

room. I love the idea of a clean space, but ultimately it works best for me to keep a few essential things sitting out on my drafting table or desktop. These tend to be the items I use all the time like erasers, colored binder rings, ribbon and braids, to name just a few. It’s easy to create bowls in all colors and sizes that will

hold these most used supplies, and they also look good in the process. And did I mention cheap? For the price of a few sheets of paper, you can create bowls to serve as desk caddies that are as custom as you are. Each bowl is made up of 21 equilateral triangles that are arranged into four rows (as shown) and taped together with removable tape to create

a pattern. Starting at the tips, I counted the triangles by threes to indicate the cut lines, which I have marked with dotted lines. I scored on all of the solid lines, cut on the dotted lines and assembled each bowl by overlapping and attaching the two ends. The bowl is completed by bringing in the overlapping triangles and adding adhesive to fasten them together.

Because the size of each bowl will be determined by the size of the triangles, it makes it easy to store items in a variety of sizes. If you’re looking to store your most basic supplies on your desk or tabletop, skip a trip to the store and look instead to your paper supplies to create triangle bowls that will keep your favorite supplies organized and handy.

Experimenting with shades of white Dear Debbie: We have tried several warm whites on our walls; however, we have fir floors that have a strong orange color with a touch of yellow. The orange casts off onto the walls, so the warm whites and off whites we have tried either turn orange or pink. Light changes in every room. We are hoping to get away from the yellows and prefer to stay on the lighter side. Could you recommend a warm white that is not too yellow and not too dark or dense? Thank you. -- Wendy Dear Wendy: Color theory is a complicated business. We do not all see and react to colors the same way, so there is the personal factor to take into consideration. External factors such as natural and artificial light that changes throughout the day and evening affect colors. White walls are particularly prone to outside influences. As you have experienced, the yellow/orange hues that radiate from your wood floor bounce off your white walls, which now reflect that wood color. There are some basic rules that do help

Your home might be your “castle,” according to lore, but the government is sill king when deciding what you can and cannot do there. DEAR MR. MYERS: We want to replace the old, 3-foot-tall wood fence that separates our property from our neighbor’s with an 8foot-tall cement wall that would provide more privacy. But when we applied for a building permit with the city, we were told the new wall cannot be more than 6 feet high. Isn’t this unconstitutional, considering that the wall would be on our private property? ANSWER: No, the ordinance is perfectly legal. Many cities, counties and states have ordinances or laws against the construction of overly tall walls or fences – often called “spite fences” -- that require homeowners or builders to limit the height to, say, 5 or 6 feet. They’re primarily designed to provide all homeowners with unobstructed views from inside their house, and their legality has been consistently upheld by numerous courts across the nation. What’s wrong with my garage door opener? By C. Dwight Barnett Tribune News Service

Q: I’m having a problem with my garage door opener. After leaving the house, I noticed the garage door did not close. I tried several times, but the door only moved slightly but would not close. I had to go into the garage and release the door opener and then lock the door. Do I need a new opener? A: An automatic garage door opener has two devices to protect you and your automobile from

harm should the door accidentally close when you are under it. Your problem may be that the photocells are out of adjustment keeping the door from closing. There are two photocells located near the bottom of the door’s track; one on either side of the door. If the beam from the photocell is blocked, the door will not close. Similarly, if one of the photocells has been moved, the light beam will be off and the door will not close. There should be a colored light on the surface of each beam to let you know the beam is properly adjust-

ed. If one of the adjustment lights is off or is blinking, you can adjust the cell by moving it with your hand until the light is on and steady and stops blinking. This is an easy DIY, but you may have to call a garage door company if the adjustment does not solve your problem. Another problem could be the door closer motor sensor. There are two adjustments on the door opener motor. One is an adjustment for the opening force of the door, and the other if for the closing force of the door. Find the closing force adjust-

ment and turn the screw a quarter turn at a time until the door closes and stays closed. This may take some time to adjust accurately. Once the door stays closed, open the door and then lower it again trying to stop the door from closing by grasping the bottom rail with your hand. If the door does not automatically stop and open up, you need to adjust the closing force until you can stop the door. Sounds easy, but sometimes it takes several attempts to get the adjustment just right.

The easiest and most inexpensive way is to order faucet hole caps to cover and plug the extra sink holes. However, you will see the round covers and you may not like that look. Note: If you’re a regular reader of this column, you will no doubt recognize the subject matter as it is something we need to regularly discuss. It’s that time of year again: The calls and damaged plant samples coming into the Extension office right now serve as a somber reminder for the need to take care with weed control products, especially those designed to control broad leaf weeds. The vast majority of broadleaf weed control products contain 2,4-D (Dimethylamine salt of 2,4-DDichlorophenoxyace tic acid) or a closely related chemical. This active ingredient is found in hundreds of different products and can come in liquid or granular form. When used properly in accordance with the label instructions, this product does a great job at controlling most broadleaf weeds. The bad news is it is equally as effective at killing many of our desirable plants as well with tomatoes, potatoes, and grapes being some of the most sensitive. “No problem”, you may say, “I’ll just be careful not to spray these

Home Grown KEITH REED plants”. If only it were that easy. This class of chemical moves very easily with the wind, traveling much farther than you might imagine. To make matters a bit worse, the liquid form of the product does not even have to make the trip with the wind. When conditions are right (higher temperatures and young, actively growing plants are a big part of this), even the vapor from the product can be enough to cause a problem. Scientists use the term epinasty to describe the growth of the affected plant. Damage is characterized by stretching, twisting, and general malformation of the leaves and stems. Sometimes, the plants can recover and outgrow this, but oftentimes they

do not. It can help to prune off the damaged portions since once the plant part is deformed, it is never going to regain its full function. The take home message is one you’ve heard often if you are a regular reader. Part of the role of the product label is to warn you of issues like this, but it is up to the user to read and follow the instructions carefully. For more information on this or any other horticultural topic, you can contact Keith Reed, the Horticulturist in the Payne County Extension office. Keith can be reached via email at keith.reed @okstate.edu, phone at 405-747-8320, or in person at the Payne County Extension office, located at 315 W. 6th in Stillwater.

Five ideas, tools to ease spring tasks weather. The problem I have, besides hating to paint, is the cleanup. I have tried to save expensive paint brushes by washing and then rinsing in a fabric softener or wrapping the brush in plastic food wrap and placing it in the freezer. Now I use the Paint Saint, a paintbrush in a can solution that enables you to quickly and easily touch up paint. The high-quality brush is built into the lid of an airtight can. The brush never dries out and never requires cleaning. The lid twists off and on, no screwdrivers or mallets needed. Inside ridges let you wipe off excess paint, and the lid serves as a drip catcher. No need for old newspapers or paint cloths. Finally, you can effortlessly do touch-up jobs quickly and then easily store the tools. A single brush and can retails for just $13.49 and is available online at www.mypaintsaint.c om.

3. One of my favorite old-school repair items is Duck Tape. It has been said there are 1,001 uses for Duck Tape. The standard silver color of Duck Tape, which I sometimes use as a temporary repair, is colored to remind me I need to remove the tape and finally make a more permanent repair. Duck Tape is also available in a large variety of colors and designs. Now Duck Tape has introduced Duck Tape Transparent Tints for craft or repair projects. Duck Tape now comes in three transparent tint shades that can be applied without hiding what’s beneath the tape. It will bring a little pizazz to any project. ShurTech Brands, the maker of Duck Tape, is also introducing “T-Rex which the manufacturer represents as “Ferociously Strong Tape saying that is stronger and will hold longer than similar utility tapes. The tape is also said to be super durable,

extra thick and sun resistant to work in all kinds of weather. For more information, visit www.ducktapecom or www.trextape.com. 4. Everyone knows the frustration that can happen when clutter takes over the garage or when it’s impossible to even open the door on the tool shed. No more unsightly pegboards or hanging tools from nails or screws fastened to the walls. The shelves designed for the home are really not strong enough to hold home and garden tools normally stored in a garage. These are all too common problems that can be easily solved with the storeWALL system. The wall panels and accessory shelves, baskets, hooks, totes and bins can be quickly installed to turn your chaotic garage or shed into an organized and accessible space. For
