accentuate the irregular widow spacing in my old house and make the room feel darker. But drawn by irrepressible desire to always add gorgeous new textiles to my rooms, I decided to go for it. To make sure I allowed in all the natural light possible, I hung the panels on the outsides of the windows. The addition of the curtain panels, a soft blue floral finished with a green flange, warmed up the room so much, I was sorry I had waited so many years. Do you have blinds or shutters that you still like? Leave them up! Just finish them off with panels. If your windows are bare, what about woven shades, like matchstick blinds or bamboo shades? These simple, rustic beauties even look at home in formal room. VARIATIONS ON A PRETTY PALETTE When I worked with my friends Julie and Mark on their country dream house, they wanted to create a family home that was filled with color and patterns. They landed on a palette of gray and yellow for a number of the rooms, telling the story through one beautiful window covering after
another. In their living room, the floor-toceiling windows got a zip of pattern, thanks to sensational Roman shades. The pattern is bold, but done in a palette of soft grays and yellows, it supports the design choices in the room,
accenting without overwhelming. The charming color palette of gray and yellow continues in the master bedroom. Once again, Julie selected a stunning combination of fabrics to bring the colors to life and make the room truly unique.
The floral fabric used in the panels featured had sweet embroidered centers. I’m a big fan of the time-honored cafe curtain. Simple and sweet, these timeless treatments do an excellent job of allowing natural light into a room,
yet provide privacy. Julie went with a darling black and cream toile for the curtains, an unassuming treatment that lets your eyes drink in the fabulous coral ceilings. If my laundry room looked like this, I might do the wash more often!
Ten tips for colors that pop By Cathy Hobbs Tribune News Service
Gone are the days of bland and boring, in are the days of vibrant color. One of the best ways to incorporate color into your space without taking a big plunge is to use a pop of color. Color pops are essentially sprinkles of color to add interest. Color pops also allow you to be able to incorporate nearly any color you desire into your space while also allowing you to be able to eas-
ily swap your pop of color choice with little effort. When it comes to adding a pop of color as a design technique, here are my top 10 Design Recipes tips. 1. Choose a rich and vibrant color. 2. Select a strong decorative item such as a pillow, throw or even upholstered item. 3. Use a technique called color mapping in which you repeat or map your color pop. 4. Try to use a single color to execute your color pop. One color is powerful.
5. Don’t overdo it. Less is more. 6. Look for the unexpected. 7. Choose colors you love. 8. Don’t be afraid to swap out your pops of color to refresh a space. 9. Consider large items such as sofas and chairs or even rugs. 10. Consider a graphic pattern instead of a color as a decorative technique. For example, a black and white chevron pattern throughout a space can be a repetitive pop element.

Medicare won’t pay for ‘grab bars,’ but is happy to pay for injuries that result It seems absurd, but Medicare won’t reimburse the cost of making an older person’s home safe from a fall, but will pay lots of money to help that person recover from an injury that easily could have been avoided. DEAR MR. MYERS: My mother is elderly and growing more frail by the week. Would her Medicare plan pay for the cost of making her home more accessible, especially for the cost of installing grab bars around the house? It’s an expensive proposition! ANSWER: Sorry, but no. Medicare will not pay for most changes to make it easier for seniors to move about their own home, including the installation of grab bars or even handrails for stairs. Refusing reimbursement for such fall-prevention items is ironic, if not downright moronic. That’s because Medicare spends billions of dollars each year to treat injuries caused by falls, often for surgery or lengthy physical therapy. Many of those tumbles could be avoided if more seniors could afford to outfit their homes with grab bars and the like.

damage is clearly visible. They instead leave the work to a pest specialist. Damage caused by termites and other vermin can be hard to detect and very expensive to repair. Many lenders won’t approve a new loan until a licensed pest inspector has exam-
ined the property and reported that it’s OK. Ordering a separate pest-inspection report will probably cost you between $100 and $250, but that’s a small price to pay if it helps you avoid purchasing a home that has serious problems.

Leaf drop on trees
Data from Stillwater Board of REALTORS | Apr 2016
KEITH REED through and indiscriminately cause this type of damage. Most pests (both insects and disease) have species they favor. In other words, if only oak trees were being affected, a pest attack would more likely be the problem. Drought is the most common cause for causing this issue. We are pleased to report that is not the cause this time so we can thankfully take that off the list! That leaves us with weather as the most likely cause.. While it may seem like it’s been ideal weather for plant growth, that’s only partially true. While we have had adequate moisture and relatively mild temperatures, we’ve also had some bumps along the way. Probably most applicable to this situation would be the very early green-up, early warm weather with a couple of very significant cool-offs, less sunshine than usual, and several storm systems that have produced some isolated high winds
and a bit of small hail. The take home message is don’t panic! Trees that are otherwise healthy have the ability to put on additional leaves when the conditions are right for it to do so. Avoid the temptation to spray just in case. Unless you are targeting a specific problem, spraying is unlikely to help. As a matter of fact, it can often cause more harm than good. The only additional care you might need to give trees that have been affected by this might come later this summer. If it does turn off to be a hot and dry summer, it would be helpful to give these trees enough water to help them avoid the stress of another premature leaf dropfrom drought. For more information on this or any other horticultural topic, you can contact Keith Reed, the horticulturist in the Payne County Extension office at keith.reed @okstate.edu, 405747-8320 or in person at at 315 W. 6th in Stillwater.

In the last few days, the Payne County Extension office has been receiving an unusually high number of reports of trees suddenly dropping their leaves. This happens from time to time; but for trees to do so in May when the leaves are full and green is very unusual. While we are not certain what exactly is going on, all signs point to weather related issues. When we are trying to get to the bottom of an issue like this, the answer is sometimes found through the process of elimination after gathering as many facts as we can. In this particular issue, we know: • A variety of deciduous trees species are being affected. • The leaves, while not all perfect, are not showing much in the way of obvious disease or damage. • The problem is not isolated with calls coming in from Stillwater, Cushing, and Perkins. • The affected trees are growing on a wide variety of sites with differences in soil and microclimate. When you add these factors up, the possibility of this being an insect or disease is diminished. Fortunately, we have very few pests that come

We coiled strips of newspaper to make a cat, but you can use the technique to form other animals and letters. Go wild! 1. Cut a sheet of newspaper lengthwise into 5-inchwide sections. We used 5 { strips to make our cat. 2. Fold each strip in half lengthwise three times to end up with a strip that’s roughly { inch wide. Press the folds flat. 3. Start coiling by rolling one end of the strip tightly around itself. Add strips to the coil by adhering the overlapping ends with a glue stick. Finish the shape by gluing down the end. 4. For the eyes and head, start
with a larger center circle before coiling. 5. Make other shapes, such as ears and a tail, as shown.
6. Arrange the shapes on waxed paper and add tacky glue where the pieces touch. Let the glue dry
completely. 7. Use tacky glue to add folded-paper features, such as feet, a nose and a mouth.
This meets the 3inch overlap requirement. This is something you do not have to worry about with a manufactured wood Ijoist. I-joists can be ordered and designed for each application, or a stock size, usually

it costs. You can expect to pay a minimum of $6 or $7 a square foot in a best-case scenario. Given your square footage, the minimum cost would be $1,890 plus labor. Since you have a dirt floor, the condition of the floor isn’t an issue. In some situations, however, the contractor will need to decide whether to demolish the existing floor or not. It’s much more affordable to simply pour concrete over the existing floor if it’s in good shape than to demo a floor that’s in poor condition before installing the new one. needs. Our Painted and Polished Concrete Floor guide also might be useful. CONSIDER A MOISTURE BARRIER A point to remember about concrete is it’s porous and retains moisture. Notoriously known for holding humidity, basements could be problematic for concrete without a moisture barrier in place. The barrier adds another layer of protection between the concrete slab and moisture that tries to seep from the ground. To ensure longevity, discuss waterproofing needs and options with a highly rated contractor before installing a new concrete floor.

doors set sideways fill the tiny house’s walls and interior with light. Just below the roofline, a row of vintage stained-glass panes creates a nonstop rainbow. A rope suspension bridge ties the treehouse to a redwood deck. “Two cables rated 1,500 pounds each are under the bridge,” Steve explained. “I know it won’t break.” The treehouse deck is big enough for three or four people to sit and sip; a pulley delivers beers in a bucket from the bar. Inside, a day bed invites naps. A sound system provides just the perfect background music for sweet dreams. “We have full electrical out here,” said Shelly, a hair stylist and photographer. “You can bring your laptop out here if you want to. This is where I have my coffee every morning.” Where some home owners may see only problems, the Langes find opportunity. Two decades ago, they started with a small deck and plain slab patio in a severely sloped weed-filled backyard. They turned that suburban challenge into this fantasy oasis. Heritage oaks –
including the tree with the minihouse – form the canopy of their private tropical retreat. Need time for reflection? That’s where Shelly’s “wall of mirrors” comes in handy. One fence is filled with garage-sale framed mirrors, creating a glittery mosaic of light in the shadows. The inspiration? Shelly wanted to brighten up a spot in heavy shade. The mirrors proved a fun solution. After a retaining wall recently fell down, the Langes replaced it with a
“wall of windows,” another visual pun. More than a dozen vintage windows now stand in for the former fence. The windows lead to a claw-foot bathtub turned into a recirculating fountain. In another corner, an old cabinet became a fun fountain with water trickling down from drawer to drawer. When the weather gets hot, the Langes take a dip in their spa-size “people pond,” another kind of watering hole. A series of decks stair-steps down the hillside with
fern-lined niches and flowering shrubs. Hummingbirds create a constant buzz around six bird feeders. “We go through 25 pounds of sugar a week,” Steve said. “We get as many as 50 hummers at a time.” One deck holds a queen-size
wrought-iron bed, perched with a view of the hillsides. For the Langes, the backyard has become so comfortable, it’s where they spend much of their time together now. “Seven months a year, that’s where we sleep,” Shelly said. “I just love sleeping outside."

She sees “making use of interesting creatures, textiles, art and objects, and using them in a creative way, as part of her job. Her impressive career as one of the U.K.’s most unique designers for her upscale boutique Firmdale Hotels and fabulous homes in the U.K. and the U.S. demonstrate how Kemp’s daring and inquisitive character never rests. It’s an exciting ride to visit rooms that Kemp has designed. I venture to say that you will have seen nothing like these spaces that combine bold and whimsical fabrics with quirky elements and color and pattern mixes.
House to Home DEBBIE TRAVIS In Kit Kemp’s magnificent book “Every Room Tells a Story, with stunning photography by Simon Brown, published by Hardie Grant, the author shares her secrets and introduces us to many of the talented artisans whose work she reveres. There is always something that draws you in and keeps your eye moving. A series of unique lamps made from old plastic bottles with woven raffia shades hang in a hotel bar. Large
Kemp has designed a collection of furniture and wallpaper for lifestyle and fashion retailer Anthropologie. Her favorite piece is the Winged White Rhino armchair with flying monkeys dancing around the bright orange base and contrast piping in bright blue. The White Rhino, an endangered species, has wings to save it from its enemies. In the sitting room shown here, these delightful chairs are surrounded by richly textured woven rugs, some used as throws, and above the mantel, a custom frame with a hinge detail. Kit Kemp’s thoughtful, playful and bold style is highlighted on each page of her book, accompanied by words that explain how she

marbles decorate a wrought iron balustrade in a foyer. Two benches, one sitting on top of the other, becomes a bookcase. A picture meant to hang on a wall is transformed into a tabletop. Kemp says that “anything can be a feature if framed properly, and she illustrates this point repeatedly, as everything from art to fabric to bowling shoes takes center stage. Transparent acrylic box frames are a favorite, but any material from ornately carved antiques to distressed wood frames decorated with seashells, buttons or iron hinges has been employed. Kemp has also used old mobile phone cases, printing press letters, belts and buckles. The list goes on, and Kemp concludes that the stranger the artwork (or object to be framed), the more inventive the frame. Kemp has modernized the British look for comfort in traditional homes
by making them bright and cheerful with an eclectic mix of fabrics. Comfort is a priority for Kemp, and you will see that her sofas and chairs are plump and inviting. Whatever the upholstery fabric, it must be soft and pleasing to the touch. There should never be a “hands off feeling to anything in a room that is meant to be lived in and enjoyed. A riot of patterns proliferates in the drawing room shown here, but rather than fight each other, they each add a special note to the overall picture. Blue is the base color, while pink makes the colors pop. I counted 12 individual patterns throughout the drawing room and adjoining master bedroom, textiles designed by Kemp, who admonishes us all to be brave and let our spirits soar. Folk art is a vibrant theme that runs through Kemp’s work. She explains that “folk art covers a multitude of skills, from painted ceramics and decorated travel chests to intricately woven bed linens and pictures. They have all been made with gentle hands and big caring hearts. They have soul.

Ideas from Frida Kahlo’s garden By Maureen Gilmer Tribune News Service
studio and look down over the garden. Between the studio and bedroom is the hallway to the garden door where Frida’s bed remains today. She asked that it be moved there toward the end so she could look out and see the flowers and animals. A PAINTER’S TRANSFORMATION The original house was not blue; we know this from childhood photos taken by her photographer father. Painting the house blue was done
later, when she and Diego lived there. Today it still features that color known as “azul anil, believed to prevent evil from entering. Since then even more colors have been added giving the space a more festive overall appeal.
man cactus and other sun lovers thriving there. The current gardeners have preserved the madonna lilies that grow all over Coyoacan like weeds. They also exploit impatiens, our shade garden annuals that grow large and lacy in that mild winter SHADE PLANTS climate. Other plants Few flowers bloom common there are at Casa Azul due to grown in pots along the tall tree canopy the many low seatthat shades the gar- walls. Spider plants den. The space was and sansevieria, both sun-filled in Frida’s frost-tender, are comearly days, when vin- mon here, as well as tage photos show a series of leatherleaf white hairy “old bergenia in terra
cotta pots. MONUMENTAL ART Both Diego and Frida were avid collectors of preColumbian statuary and architectural pieces yielded from the early excavations of Aztec ruins. Much of her chunky jewelry came from actual finds in the diggings. The reverence for the history of Mexico prior to Cortez demonstrates the strong nationalistic fever of the day that drove so many of Rivera’s mural subjects.
It takes a lot of guts to paint anything azul anil because it’s such a super potent color, but once it’s there as a background, the entire space changes. It did so in that old colonial with the modern expansion, and then with color and artifact and stone, the garden evolved from a creative woman’s oasis that now can be felt by everyone willing to visit the “place of the coyotes to experience firsthand the place she called home.

Everyone saw her home, Casa Azul, in the movie “Frida, the biography of Mexico’s most famous surrealist painter. The family house is in Coyoacan, where she grew up, a suburb just south of Mexico City. Today it is Museo Frida Kahlo for those intrepid enough to brave the trip to this lovely old town. And though wandering the house and Frida’s studio is an exceptional experience, there are some great ideas outside in the garden. The grand courtyard of Casa Azul was where Frida kept all her pets: the hairless dogs and monkeys, birds and fish. The living spaces are separated by lava-lined planting spaces that support narrow tall trees. Cooling pools, deep green canopy, lava-lined beds and her collection of preColumbian gods are a physical reminder of Aztec life in the Valley of Mexico. The curious garden has changed since she died in 1954, now totally shaded. Yet if you study old photographs of Frida there in the day, you’ll notice that same garden was more open and sunfilled. This transition from full sun to
eventual shade is something that happens in all landcapes with trees. They begin in sun until canopies mature, then as shade increases the sunloving species die out and shade plants replace them. The corner house in Coyoacan is first a colonial one, then later as studio and bedroom wing were added by Diego in a simple modern style. Newer construction uses indigenous stone, simple lines and large windows that illuminate the
