typical remodeling job. The other big problem that’s fueling a rise in costs is a shortage of skilled tradespeople. With demand for most subcontractors high, pay is soaring for those who specialize in trades that range from plumbing to carpentry. More than half of the nation’s remodelers recently surveyed by the nonprofit National Association of Home Builders (www. nahb.org) said that the top effects of the labor shortage have been higher wages and subcontractor bids, higher prices for customers and difficulty completing projects on time. Some general con-

tractors have even had to reject projects because they couldn’t find enough tradespeople to fulfill them. As a result of these soaring remodeling prices, you may want to scale back your plans, or cancel them altogether, especially if you plan to move to a new house within the next two to three years. If you’re dead set on doing the remodel that you originally planned, ask the contractor if he’d honor his original bid if you agree to do some of the work yourself. Offering to paint the inside walls yourself, or simply haul any

construction debris away instead of having him do it could trim thousands of dollars off the cost of the contractor’s new but higher bid. *** REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: In the NAHB survey of remodelers, about 85% reported a shortage of carpenters. Another 71% said they had trouble finding bricklayers or masons, while 58% said that qualified electricians were more expensive and difficult to find. *** DEAR DAVE: A lot of restaurants and takeout joints in our

area have gone out of business and their stores are still empty. With the economy supposedly strong, why have so many restaurants closed and other companies not taken their space? ANSWER: The restaurant industry is highly competitive, and dozens of even the largest chains have been closing some of their stores or have completely gone out of business. Understandably, few restaurateurs are anxious to buy their buildings or lease their space. Compounding the vacancy problem

is that restaurant space is difficult to repurpose for other uses: Kitchens have to be gutted and replaced, tables and seats removed, and counters typically aren’t useful for other types of retail outlets. Some familiar names have been closing many of their stores. Sandwich giant Subway Restaurants shuttered about 1,100 stores last year, while competitor Quizno’s has gone from about 4,700 stores a decade ago to less than 400 today. Applebee’s has closed hundreds of its locations over the past few years as well.

Red and orange spots sign of disease on apple and pear trees If you are a regular reader of this column, you know that we’ve been talking about problems related to excessive rainfall for the last several weeks. With no foreseeable change in the weather pattern, it looks like these problems are going to continue for a while. So far, the most common issue has been red or orange spots all over the leaves of pear and apple leaves. Over time, the spots produce tiny “fingers” on the bottom side of the leaves. This is rust, a fungal disease. Despite the hopes of some Bradford pear owners, there is no chance of losing your tree to this disease. What you can expect as the disease runs its course, is for the leaves to go off-color and drop prematurely. Since this is happening early in the growing season, the tree will put on a new set of healthy leaves. Don’t count on a fruit crop

Home Grown KEITH REED this year. While it is possible for the fruit on affected trees to ripen to maturity, it is rare and unlikely to happen this season. Treatment for this disease is not recommended as the disease has progressed too far for fungicide treatments to be effective. If this is something you would like to try to prevent in the future, you will need to start treating early, just as the new leaves are emerging. Once again, disease pressure is extremely high right now. If this is not something you typically see in your landscape, it may not pop up in a normal season. It is also difficult to recommend attempt-

Top 5 trends in kitchen design for 2019 … and beyond By Dan DiClerico

Professional kitchen designers are on the front line of the latest trends, a result of the countless hours they spend at showrooms and trade shows – not to mention the time they spend on social media swapping images, ideas and inspiration. Every year, the National Kitchen & Bath Association surveys hundreds of these designers around the country to crowdsource the emerging styles, features and materials with the most staying power. If you’re considering a kitchen remodel, you’ll want to check out these five trends from the most recent NKBA report. They’ll be defining kitchens not just in 2019, but for years to come. Trend No. 1: Color, and lots

of it The all-white kitchen will always have a place in ultra-modern homes, but its days as the dominant design force are over. “We’re heading into 2020 with bold, vibrant colors in the kitchen,” says Elle H-Millard, a certified kitchen designer and editor-at-large with NKBA. Deep, saturated colors evocative of nature, including emerald green and navy blue, are on the rise, maybe as an island counter color or even as an appliance finish. Trend No. 2: Column refrigerators The fridge and freezer have always been housed in the same rectangular box – until now. Column refrigerators and freezers make it possible to separate the food storage units, allowing for far greater flexibility

of design. Besides its aesthetic appeal, designers say this trend appeals to growing consumer focus on healthy eating, with its emphasis on fresh foods. That might result in a large, centrally located column refrigerator for produce, meats, fish and the like, plus a smaller column freezer off to the side or tucked under a countertop. Trend No. 3: Appliances that know how to cook Kitchens are getting more intelligent, and there’s no better example of this than the “assisted cooking technology” featured in many ovens and ranges. These smart appliances are outfitted with sensors, cameras and other advanced technologies that enable them to identify what’s being cooked and set the cooking times and tempera-

tures accordingly. “These new technologies have tons of promise because they allow homeowners to cook like a professional,” says H-Millard. Trend No. 4: Mixed metals Stainless steel used to prevail over the entire kitchen, from appliances to faucets to light fixtures. The kitchen of the 2020s will instead boast an array of finishes. Call it the “new industrial,” an urban-influenced style that designers say will only get more popular in coming years. Black stainless steel, a darker, matte alternative to traditional stainless, continues to gain traction. You

might think about pairing black appliances with a faucet and cabinet hardware in nickel with a brushed or satin finish. Trend No. 5: Emphasis on accessibility Nearly eight in 10 designers from the NKBA survey reported an increase in kitchen size. This isn’t necessarily new; it follows the open-kitchen concept that’s been popular for years. The twist going forward is a focus on aging-in-place and universal design – that is, creating kitchens that are accessible for people of all ages and abilities. Strategies includes installing cabinets with

Green is the color of tranquility, a soothing hue of spring. And regardless of Kermit the Frog’s hit song, it actually IS easy to be green. The color pairs so beautifully with blues, black and white, violets and pinks. It also happens to be one of my favorite colors of the moment. Green is appropriate any time of year – it can enhance freshness in the spring and add a deep richness during the holidays. Seeing all the different ways the rejuvenating hue has been incorporated into our decor has inspired me to share a few ways you can bring it into your home as well. Experiment with different tints and shades. There is no shortage of variations of green.

There’s seafoam, kelly, emerald, jade, sage, pine... the list goes on. Whether earthy undertones or bright jewel, there is a shade of green for every home. Start small with pillows and accessories to find the vibrancy that works for your space, then build from there. Don’t be afraid to use multiple shades and patterns. Use a variety of textures. From rich velvets to light cottons and seemingly endless patterns, fabric combinations are limitless. And when it comes to green, it’s hard to pick a favorite. Thankfully, you don’t have to. I love to mix textures. While some might stay away from big statement pieces, the bold go big. My current obsession is a deep, emerald green

What do your throws say about you? By Katie Laughridge Tribune News Service

OPEN HOUSE SUNDAY 1-3 PM

Color Adding a pop of a new hue to a stale room can instantly change the feel of your home. Choose your color based on personal preference and desired outcome. Use deep jewel tones for richness, bright accents for a sunny and whimsical approach and a mix of neutrals for a soft, comfortable vibe. Once you find a palette you like, stay with

it while mixing in textures and patterns to keep your space from becoming too busy. Personality I love a good pattern! Don’t be afraid to add in some patterns and shapes to the mix. Throw pillows are a great way to show off your personality in a room. From floral to plaid and everything in between, using patterns is a conversa-

tion starter and a great way to tie in the rest of the decor in your room. Toss in a new shape and play around with different sizes to keep it interesting. At the end of the day, there are no set rules

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, June 7, 2019

The other day I posted on Instagram about my love of pillows (I can’t have enough) and the debate with my husband who could honestly do without (gasp). The response was fantastic. It seems there is a big divide between the pillow lovers and minimalist bed makers. However, regardless of how many pillows you use, they need to serve a purpose. Decorative or functional, you can use pillows in many ways. Whether in the bedroom or a living space, throw pillows can take a room from stark to stylishly comfortable. Just as the last step in getting ready for an evening out is a fantastic piece of jewelry, the finishing touch in adding texture, color and person-

ality to a room are often the pillows. They are also a fantastic way to carry a fabric or pattern theme throughout your home. Trying to find your perfect mix of pillows can be a daunting task with all the available options. A good rule of thumb is to start with groups of three and add as needed to find your perfect balance. Here are some things to look for when choosing the perfect throw pillows. Texture Selecting fabrics that have a wide range of complementary textures adds visual interest and warmth to any room by offering a layered appeal that can be cozy and comfortable or tailored and refined. Mix nubby fabrics with linens for an organic aesthetic. Pair crushed velvets with dupioni silk for a luxe look.
