Alternative scoring system gains ground on FICO A growing number of lenders are considering a prospective borrower’s “VantageScore” when reviewing an application for a mortgage, auto loan or new credit card. DEAR MR. MYERS: We recently applied for a home-equity credit line, and the lender understandably ordered a credit report on us. What surprised us, though, is that the report was from a company called VantageScore instead of FICO. What is VantageScore? Is it any different than FICO? ANSWER: Until about 10 years ago, FICO – the creditscoring system developed by California-based Fair Isaac Corp. in the 1960s – was the only source of credithistory information that lenders could rely upon when reviewing a prospective borrower’s loan application. But that all changed in 2006, when the three major credit-reporting agencies (Equifax, TransUnion and Experian) combined to create VantageScore, which they claim provides a more accurate picture of a consumer’s past credit history and ability to repay future debt. FICO scores are still used by about

assume that you don’t want to delay your home-buying plans until you can save more money to make a larger down payment on a bigger house. If that’s the case, you could buy a lessexpensive two-bedroom home now and hope that values keep rising steadily so you can sell it later and use the profits to purchase the larger home that you desire. Alternatively, if

you’re lucky, you might be able to find a three- or four-bedroom “fixer-upper” in your chosen neighborhood today that’s in your current price range. Just make sure that it is structurally sound and needs only cosmetic repairs -- and that you’re ready to do most or all of the work yourselves instead of incurring the high cost of hiring remodeling professionals.

A final (and more offbeat) option would be to buy a two-bedroom house that fulfills your needs now, but could be expanded as both your family and equity grow. But before you buy such a property, get bids from a few contractors to find out how much it would cost to add a new bedroom or two. Also check with local zoning officials to see if such an expansion would be allowed.

Begin with a quick trace around your hand and cut out two of them from construction paper. Cut out a pair of paper cuffs for each hand and add pin stripes with a white pen and a button cut with a circle punch. Cut a long strip of paper and accordion fold it into 10 equal sections. Label each pleat with letters to spell out your message leaving

the middle two sections to be embellished with a heart. Fasten the accordion-folded strip to the inside of each hand, aligning the hands to each other and positioning the pleated strip to sit flush with the cuffs and the table top. This allows the card to stand up and shows off your hand-y work to dad and the whole family. And speaking of family,

it’s always fun to get your kids in on the action, helping them to lend their hands to make the same card for their dad. In an age of Snapchats, emails and texts, a handmade card with a heartfelt message is sure to stand out, and I don’t mean just a little bit, but This Much!

Keeping new trees healthy Getting new trees off to a strong start is a critical key to a long lived, healthy plant. Since fall is generally the best time to plant, followed closely by spring, this is a good time to talk about a few common issues that are often neglected or overlooked. Of course, it’s no surprise that the biggest one for most Oklahoma summers is usually water. As temperatures climb up to and beyond the nineties, a trees need for regular watering will increase. Keep your eye (and finger) on the soil to make sure the tree does not suffer from drought stress. It’s hard to say exactly how much water to apply because that depends on a variety of factors including tree size, species, and soil conditions. The general idea is to make sure the soil under the mulch maintains some level of moisture. Make sure the regular watering includes the area just beyond the original planting hole. This prevents the original soil from drawing moisture away from the tree and it encourages lateral root growth into the surround-

to make picnic food in order to have a picnic, I would never do it. And that would be a sad waste of a perfect summer afternoon. So I have given myself permission to pick up the food for my picnics. I opt for simple fare that is easy to pack. Quiche is a crowd pleaser in my home, as are sandwiches. If you love to cook, there are millions of great ideas online about tasty but simple dishes you can make in advance or throw together the last minute. Fresh fruits and veggies, a loaf of warm artisan bread and a wedge of artisanal cheese, wine or sparkling water are simple classics you can grab at a market in a jiff.

LEAVE THE ELECTRONICS AT HOME I am as addicted to my iPhone and iPad as the next person, but when I spend time with people I love, especially out in nature, I try to leave all the devices at home. Or, in the car, if I’m not willing to be without them for more than an hour or two. Friends of mine who have young kids or teens have banned phones, tablets or any kind of portable gaming device during family picnics because they have found that when their kids unplug for a few minutes, the family’s interaction is so much more fun. Switch your electronics to off, and enjoy Mother Nature uninterrupted.

SERVING PIECES When you’re planning a picnic, try following my entertaining mantra: presentation over preparation. Instead of putting my time into preparing fancy food, I like to focus my creative energy on presenting the picnic goodies in a lovely way. One of my favorite ideas for a picnic: Use an interesting caddy to hold food like fresh veggie sticks or breadsticks. You will find my picnic basket stocked with small trays for guests to put their plates upon, a cake plate to hold the main course and a pretty bowl full of ice to keep drinks cool. your first apartment. With the proliferation of direct-to-consumer mattress brands, finding a great one to suit your needs at an attractive price is easier than ever. ORIGINAL ART You don’t need to be buying Warhols and Basquiats just yet, but investing in a few pieces of artwork that didn’t come from a rack at a big-box store will make your space feel more personal and curated. Look out for young up-andcoming artists, and pick prints and photography over original art to save on costs. A DESK SPACE

If you’re just getting started in your career, chances are you’ll have to bring you work home with you on a few occasions – that’s just how the world works. Instead of hustling away from your bed or sofa, set up a dedicated workspace – it’ll make organizing paperwork and taking care of accounting that much easier, too. LAYERED LIGHTING Don’t just rely on bad overhead lighting installed by your landlord. Invest in a variety of lamps to give your space depth and ambiance. Some companies now offer pendant

lights and wall lamps that can be plugged in, so you can install them without an electrician. Always try to invest with lighting with integrated dimmers – you will glow under the soft light. ADEQUATE STORAGE Storage is the bane of existence of anyone living in tight quarters. If your apartment doesn’t have enough closet space, get creative: Clothing racks, dressers, hooks and even bookshelves can solve all your storage woes. If you’re still stuck, it might be time to call Marie Kondo.

Write it yourself When did you last send a handwritten note of thanks, or a bulky envelope filled with pages of family news that you penned over days? These personalized epistles are so precious. Our handwriting is one of our most distinct characteristics -- no two people write the same. It showcases our personalities and our backgrounds. Hand lettering communicates more than the news; it shows how the writer is feeling, whether rushed, happy, angry or sad. It’s a beautiful thing, even when it’s messy. However, times have changed. The electronic age has altered the way we communicate with each other. We are now experiencing a generation that rarely if ever writes down anything at all. Schools no longer teach cursive style handwriting. It is dying away. But wait, not so fast. Nostalgia for the unique lettering and the immediate connection we feel to the source of the handwriting is a powerful emotion. We are seeing a backlash of sorts, a growing trend that in many instances pushes back the typed and digital, and reintroduces messages written by hand. Witness the

One of the best plant databases online is

Their Plant Finder leads searches to an enormous number of really detailed plant profiles prepared in the middle of the U.S. so you won’t get to far afield regionally with the content. After so many years working as a horticultural journalist online, I believe this is the best universal database for average gardeners. If you do live in an extreme climate such as the far northern states, or perhaps Florida where conditions are unusual, stick with those regional databases. They offer all the general criteria plus helpful local details such as soils or diseases that afflict
