Strawberry care following harvest

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, June 21, 2019

Strawberries are typically a reliable perennial garden crop for Payne County. For many of you, this year has proven to be an exception as our long period of exceptionally wet, cloudy weather has created a perfect environment for many plant diseases. If your plants have suffered this year, it’s even more important than usual to put some effort into restoring plant health to increase the odds of a successful crop next year. As soon as harvest is complete, remove as many of the older leaves as is practical. Depending on how your strawberries are being grown, several tools can be used including lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, string

Home Grown KEITH REED trimmers or even hand clippers. While it’s not critical to remove all the leaf clippings from the bed, removing as many as possible can help reduce the incidence of another round of fungal diseases. The next step is to remove older plants so the remaining rows (or individual plants) are at least 8 to 10 inches apart. This allows room for next season’s plants to become established over the remainder of the growing season.

For large patches, this can easily be accomplished with a rototiller. Continue to control weeds throughout the summer. Bermudagrass can be especially troublesome if it gets established in strawberries. Water as needed to promote healthy growth. Since strawberries are susceptible to several fungal diseases, drip irrigation or soaker hoses can help minimize this problem by reducing the length of time the leaves are wetcx. Delay nitro-

How the FHA low-down-payment plan works The Federal Housing Administration has helped tens of millions of Americans buy a home with a down payment of as little as 3.5%. DEAR DAVE: We want to buy a house but don’t have a lot of money for a down payment, so we are interested in getting a low-down-payment loan from the FHA. Are there limits on how much the FHA will lend? ANSWER: Yes, but first you have to have a better understanding of how the Federal Housing Administration’s mortgage program works. The FHA doesn’t loan money directly to borrowers, but instead insures mortgages that are provided by FHA-approved lenders. If the borrower defaults and the bank must foreclose, the agen-

In so-called low-cost housing areas – often in rural communities or certain parts of big cities – the maximum loan amount is $314,827. In higher-cost areas, the max is $726,525. Depending on the buyer’s needed loan amount, the required down payment could be as low as 3.5%, but it’s usually at least 5%. An upfront mortgage-insurance premium of 1.75% of the loan amount is also required, although it can be fi-

For more information, call the FHA toll-free at 800-225-5342 or visit its parent agency’s Department of Housing and Urban Development’s website at www.hud.gov. *** REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: Before the FHA “created” the 30-year

mortgage after its formation in 1934, most home loans typically required a down payment of at least 40%, lasted only three to five years, and had to be paid off in a lump sum when the term of the mortgage ended. *** DEAR DAVE: I am a shorthaul trucker, so I am always on the road. I’ve noticed two new home-improvement centers called “Habitat ReStores.” Is this a nationwide chain? ANSWER: I suppose you could call it a “chain,” but it’s really much more. The stores are operated by one of my favorite nonprofit groups, Habitat for Humanity, which has built or remodeled decent

pen overnight. The couple stripped the house down to the studs and rebuilt it completely to get the perfect balance of rustic and elegant. By raising the ceilings, adding wooden beams and skylights, and switching out the darker tones for blonde wood and white accents, the home was completely transformed. My first thought upon entering the home was “WOW.” Susan truly succeeded in creating a light, bright and open space that immediately makes you feel at home. The removal of the original dark wood accents and the

addition of natural light drastically changed the space, making the rooms appear more spacious and the ceilings much higher. With all the light shining through the windows, it’s almost as though you haven’t gone inside at all. While Susan’s color scheme trends heavily toward blue hues, they are balanced nicely by the white and red accents found throughout the home. The pops of vivid color against the soothing and peaceful shades of blue give the home a playful at-

mosphere. Rustic elements like her dining room table, fitted with goodies such as juicy-looking tomato bowls and white-and-red checkered tins, enhance the farmhouse flair Susan and Joe wanted to bring to the space. The true magic of Susan and Joe’s home comes from the personal touches. From her impeccably decorated bookshelves that feature a perfect mix of traditional shapes, updated patterns and natural elements to her kitchen banquette that ties beautifully into her mudroom

cabinet, not one detail was left unaccounted for. Susan also incorporated cherished memories from her past into her present home. The ledge above her kitchen sink has a personal significance I find beautiful – growing up her mother had a sink ledge that housed treasured seasonal decor, and she had always wanted one of her own to decorate. Little additions like that to the new space truly take the energy in the home to the next level. I had a wonderful time learning about the journey Susan

and Joe embarked on to create this wonderful getaway. After spending just an afternoon at the lovely property, I felt re-energized and ready to take on my to-do list. Being able to experience the love and hard work that goes into creating a dream space is truly a pleasure, and I am so glad to be able to share this home with all of you. A special thank you to Susan and Joe for allowing us to tag along on this design journey with you, and for allowing us to share your space with all of our readers.
