Pleasure under glass: Simple food styling tricks By Mary Carol Garrity
Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, July 22, 2016

When it comes to entertaining, I live by my friend Marsee’s motto: presentation over preparation. You can serve even the simplest of fare to friends, but if you do so with panache, it will knock their socks off. Styling sensational food spreads is a lot easier than you think when you have: THE RIGHT FOOD For me, the right food for entertaining is anything I don’t have to cook. Seriously. I’m a disaster in the kitchen, and I love my friends too much to put them through my culinary mishaps. So when I have guests over, I always bring in yummy food prepared by someone else. I have my go –to local restaurants, and my local grocery store where I can grab a feast –in –a –flash: cheese, fruit and nuts. Honestly, if I didn’t give myself per-
mission to skip the cooking and go straight to what I love to do – arrange the food in a lovely display– I probably would never entertain. It would be too stressful for me. If cooking brings you joy, that’s fabulous. Giving guests the gift of a home –cooked meal is divine. To avoid last –minute stress, stick with recipes you feel comfortable making and that allow you to spend time with your guests, not in the kitchen. THE RIGHT TOOLS If you want to design a gorgeous food display in minutes, all you need are a few tools, the serving pieces that instantly lend drama to the table. Through the years, I’ve test –driven lots of different serving pieces, and I’ve settled on my go –to favorites, the pieces that always deliver. Cloches. I’ve been in love with cloches for decades. They are magical, in my estimation, because you can cover just
about anything with a cloche and it’s instantly relegated from ordinary to regal. When I entertain outside in the summer, cloches are a must –have to protect the food until we are ready to eat. Dishes on pedestals. Whether it’s compotes or cake plates, if you affix any kind of dish to a pedestal, it skyrockets up the drama chart. Tiered servers. You can find these classic servers in just about every style and price range. They are one of my decorating foot soldiers. Risers. It’s key to have a variety of heights in your food display. Risers allow you to lift up select serving pieces so your spread is rich with visual interest. Trays and boards. Right now, I’m crazy about long wooden cutting boards. Like a tray, they artfully anchor all the individual serving pieces so they feel like one unit. But unlike a tray, they

give you acres of space to work with. When I serve gourmet pizza for dinner, a favorite at our house, I slide the pies right onto the cutting boards. As you build your collection of serving pieces, get some formal pieces, like
crystal and silver, and some less formal pieces, like white and cream pottery or bowls with a fun pattern. That way you have the right tools at your fingertips, whether you want to entertain formally or causally.
THE RIGHT ATTITUDE One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from a lifetime of entertaining is to just relax and enjoy myself. If you are having fun, and people feel welcomed in your home, you can sur-
vive any culinary disaster. I know this firsthand. I’ve done everything from set dinner on fire to forgetting to even turn the oven on. When I blow it, we laugh until our sides hurt, then call for dinner to be delivered.
The perfect paper invitations for your summer party By Sandi Genovese Tribune News Service
Summer is here at last and that means heading outdoors for pool parties and barbecues. If you’re planning any type of party this summer you’re going to need an invitation. And if you want to encourage really good attendance, skip the e-vites and emails and return to a good old-fashioned, paper, invitation. You can prepare the most amazing food and transform the yard into a Hawaiian paradise but it won’t mean
a thing if no one shows up. So before you plan the menu or hang the party streamers, focus your attention on the invitation. The thing is, you need to send these invitations to multiple people so they need to be quick and easy to make as well as good looking. Consider a gate folded card that opens from the middle with butterfly handles. Each card requires two matching butterflies, so simply cut out a butterfly shape, add details with a black pen and photocopy it onto colored paper. Cut out the pair of colored butter-
flies, fold them in half and glue the inside of each one to the inside of each card cover. Leave the other half of each butterfly loose and the two halves will appear to be one butterfly when the card is closed. Print out the party information on the computer, attach the print out to the inside of the card and add a little color with themed stickers to complete the invitation. It’s easy to continue the butterfly theme with a dimensional place card for each guest cut from colored card stock, again in pairs. Mark the center
of each butterfly with a pencil line and cut half way down from the top on one and cut half way up from the bottom on the other one. Interlock the pair by sliding the two butterflies together along the cut lines and the butterflies become dimensional. Label each completed place card with sticker letters or handwrite the name of each guest for a place card that is as special as the invitation. In a digital age of text messages and electronic invitations, you will be surprised at the impact your paper invitation will have.

‘Crimes against horticulture’ WORD Good to the Last
By Maureen Gilmer

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, July 22, 2016
Tribune News Service
There’s a Facebook page titled “Crimes Against Horticulture” that gathers photos of horrendously mutilated trees and shrubs. It’s what people do when they feel compelled to prune plants, but they don’t know why. The extent of human creativity can be viewed on their posts, which defy both logic and nature. It is a valuable, visual cautionary tale about what power tools have done to landscape plants everywhere. Early in my career, my 80-something mentor, landscape architect Milton Sessions, taught me about pruning woody shrubs and trees his way. First of all, he said, “They should never look like they are pruned and I don’t want to see any blunt ends.” I was specifically tasked with shaping the old shrubs in a way that results in a natural-looking plant. He demonstrated how to remove wayward branches deep inside the branching structure to create the results I want on the outside. “Sure it takes longer,” he explained, “But you won’t have to do it again for a very
long time. Use clippers to shape your old shrubs and you’ll ruin them. You’ll have to do it often and for the life of that shrub.” Sessions taught me another simple rule about how to approach maintenance pruning on woodies that’s ideal for beginners: “Always begin by removing all dead, diseased or conflicting branches first.” These are three conditions that may threaten the health of the plant by creating injuries where moisture is lost and pathogens flourish. Wounds also draw off growth energy to nonproductive parts of the tree. Fortunately these are easy to spot and resolve without special training. With deciduous plants, dividing dead wood (twigs or branches) from living is impossible in the winter. Afterwards when leaves come, dead wood stands out like a sore thumb. Early in the season is the best time to spot and remove these three scenarios so wounds can heal completely before winter. CONFLICTING WOOD Whenever two branches or twigs touch there is a wound. It gets worse every time the wind blows,
sawing the bark back and forth until it’s worn off. This is where internal moisture flows out and disease comes in. You must resolve every conflict by deciding which branch takes priority, then sacrifice the other. Make your decisions on which one is healthiest and contributes most to the overall beauty of the form. DEAD WOOD Whether it’s cold or heat or drought, plants show their displeasure with tip die back. They sacrifice parts of the canopy to minimize the amount of foliage it must support. Die back is caused by many things, but no matter the source, it should be immediately removed to stop any spread into fresh wood. When removing dead wood, make sure you cut further
down into the green wood so living cells will callus off the wound securely against pathogens. Insiders hide large tree cuts by washing the open wound with watered down interior latex (tinted to match the bark) paint for more immediate protection and to discourage moisture loss and unsightly sap bleeds. DISEASED WOOD You may notice rot, peeling bark, bugs, black fungus and a dozen other typical problems. The easiest way to keep any of it from spreading from a small spot to the rest of the tree is to simply prune it off and discard. Branches invaded by mistletoe must be cut a foot back from this tree parasite to make sure all its root-like haustoria are
removed. I quickly learned that after completing these three requirements with most any plant, there was no further pruning to be done. Once a year natural pruning
was vastly preferred by this lazy gardener over tedious shearing and clean up which has proliferated with cheap power tools, the gateway to future crimes against horticulture.

Special ‘spendthrift trust’ can keep heirs from squandering homeowner’s assets About Real Estate DAVID MYERS curb his spending and to exercise better financial judgment. It’s important to carefully consider the trustee you choose to handle the trust after you’re gone. Oftentimes, people who create such a trust choose a relative or close friend. That’s OK in some instances, but it can create problems in others if the heir wants more money sooner than you want him or her to get it. Countless families have been emotionally torn apart after, say, an heir wants more money sooner but the uncle or an older
win. Sellers are never obligated to follow through with a transaction, even if a buyer offers the property’s full asking price, unless there’s a written sales contract that is signed by both parties. You don’t have a signed contract, so going to court would likely be a waste of your time and money. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: We are starting the process of refinancing our home. Can a lender order a copy of our credit report with only our verbal authorization, or does the approval need to be in writing? ANSWER: The lender can order the report with your verbal consent, but many financial institutions have a policy that requires your
written approval first. The Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act puts relatively strict limits on the types of companies that can access your complete credit report without your prior approval. Those companies include lenders when you apply for a mortgage or other kind
of credit, collection agencies that are trying to recover a debt and insurance companies after you ask them to underwrite a policy. A growing number of employers also want to see a job applicant’s credit report, but can get it only if the job seeker first agrees to the request in writing.

assets after you die. The trustee would then make payments to your son, known as the “beneficiary,” based on the wishes you spell out in the trust document. To illustrate, let’s say that you want the trustee to sell your home and others asset after you die and then put the proceeds into a bank account that the trustee would control. Your spendthrift trust could require the trustee to give your son a pre-set amount of cash at specified intervals, such as once a month or once a year. By doling out just a portion of the money on a regular basis, your son won’t be able to blow all of his inheritance at once. You could even tailor the trust so that all of the trust’s remaining assets would be paid to him in a lump sum on a certain date several years from now, when he (hopefully) has learned to

That is why many folks who form a spendthrift trust instead select a non-related attorney or bank officer to serve as trustee: Their job is to distribute the assets according to your final wishes, and don’t really care if an heir likes the decision or doesn’t. *** DEAR MR. A spendthrift trust can help folks to prevent their heirs from carelessly wasting the hard-earned assets they accumulated while they were alive. DEAR MR. MYERS: I am a 70-year-old widow with only one heir, a 31year-old son. I love my son very much, but he spends money like it’s going out of style and often winds up borrowing cash from me. Is there a way that I can ensure that he won’t sell my longtime home after I pass away and then squander all of the profit? ANSWER: Sure. Your best bet would likely be to set up a special trust, known as a “spendthrift trust,” that would basically put limits on what he can do with your property and how much he could spend after you pass away. Unlike the basic living trusts that I have written about before, it’s usually best to have a spendthrift trust prepared by an attorney. You would name a trustee (not your free-spending son) to handle your home and other

Mirrors for your entryway Your front hall is perhaps not the first space you think about decorating, but it has an important and very basic job to do, and warrants your attention. This is the entry point into your home. A thoughtful plan that considers immediate needs, such as where to hang up coats and hang keys, makes arriving home easy and welcoming. The color of the walls, the lighting, any furniture or accessories have an instant impact on how comfortable you feel and what you can expect from the living areas. Entryways are not created equal. Layouts vary from spacious, with a full closet and room for a table and chair, to tiny with room only for a mat for shoes and a coat tree. No matter the size, here are clever ideas that will build on your personal style. In the hallway shown here, the homeowners lean toward a traditional style with details that were lacking in their new builder home. Good lighting is essential. There was plenty of light from large windows during the day. For nighttime, I chose a chandelier that lights the hall from above with a gentle sparkle. A hall mirror was on their wish list, always a perfect solution for
House to Home DEBBIE TRAVIS enlarging a space and making it brighter. However, there was no blank wall space, so I hung an antique framed mirror from the ceiling in front of the window. The windows are dressed in white sheers flanked by the warmth of textured gold silk drapes. Painted skies are a popular way to decorate a ceiling. Rather than paint the whole ceiling, why not paint a small vignette? The illusion of a framed sky-
light is not difficult to produce and makes a stunning whimsical picture. The frame is made with stencils, so tape off the area and start with the sky. Clouds are easy to paint; watch the sky and study photos to get the feel. with a pale-blue base coat. Then mix a very transparent white glaze, three parts glazing liquid to one part paint. Use the runny white paint for drawing in the shape and direction of the clouds. They should have some form and movement and look as if they are all blowing in one direction. Next, use undiluted (thick) white paint to plump up some of the clouds. Finally, for a realistic highlight, brush on small areas of an ocher color to suggest that the sun has caught the clouds. Check out stencils at your arts and crafts store or on the internet. a two-part stencil, one for the molding and the second to add the shadows that create the three-dimensional effect. Since the hallway is connected to the other main floor rooms in this home, I chose three tones of grey for a harmonious flow. The hallway is pale grey, the dining room a midtone, and the living room was painted a dark tone to add depth and a seductive quality to the space. High-gloss varnish was applied to the living room walls so that it stands out yet blends with the other rooms.

homeowner wants to knowingly do something to his or her house that will decrease its value. At your price point, converting the home’s only bathtub into a shower shouldn’t decrease the value of your property. Today’s busy lifestyles don’t afford many people the luxury of spending an hour soaking in the tub. Most potential buyers would appreciate a recently remodeled, spacious shower with all the bells and whistles versus a tub they never get to use. There is one caveat to keep in mind – families with
small children will likely prefer a house with a bathtub. Is your neighborhood comprised of mostly families? Or is it primarily full of young professionals, retirees, couples or singles? If it’s a desirable location for families, the lack of a tub might not necessarily be a deal breaker, but be prepared for it to perhaps take a bit longer to sell. Which brings us to your plan of offering an allowance for a buyer to convert the shower back into a tub if they desire. While it’s a generous offer, don’t be so quick
to show your hand. Save your offer for the negotiation table. You don’t want to market the house with the implication that something is substandard, when the next buyer might come along and be very happy with the bathroom the way it is. If you find, after some time passes, that the lack of a tub continues to be the one sticking point that buyers simply cannot get past, consult with your Realtor to determine if the allowance should be included in your overall marketing strategy to sell the house.

Storm damages many local trees Another summer storm inflicted significant tree damage in parts of the county. While much of the cleanup has already been done, more work likely lies ahead for some of us. Consider the following as it applies to your storm-damaged landscape. If possible, it’s always a good idea to clean up ragged limb breaks with a nice clean cut made according to proper standards. It’s a bit involved to go into too much detail in this column but the general idea is to go back to the next healthy branching angle to make the cut. Leaving a stump is almost as bad as leaving the

As you know, – Sandra M., weather can seriBaltimore ously damage wood Dear Sandra: posts. Even a wood Replacing a loadpost that’s been By Angie Hicks Angie’s List
perfectly sealed will eventually start to rot. But before getting drastic, ask a contractor to examine the post to see whether it’s truly time to replace it. Sometimes, contractors can save a post that’s started to rot by adding ventilation, which minimizes the amount of condensation and rot in the post. You can also determine whether the post is past its prime by feeling it
with your hands. If you can push your finger through the surface of the wood, it’s time to think about replacing the post. IT IS HEAVY; IT’S LOAD-BEARING Hiring a contractor will likely cost at least a few hundred dollars, and that cost could rise into the thousands depending on the materials and project scope. When replacing porch posts, con-
tractors install temporary supports or use hydraulic jacks to brace the ceiling while making the repair. Fiberglass is a popular replacement option because it’s stronger than wood, holds paint well and doesn’t rot. It’s important that whoever installs the new posts understands how all of the porch’s components work together. Load-bearing posts often transfer
weight to other parts of the porch, such as footers, so it’s important to understand how all of these pieces fit. You’ll also want to make sure your contractor pulls any necessary permits. Many municipalities require a permit to alter a loadbearing wall or structure. DON’T FORGET THE ROLE THE RAILING WILL PLAY You’ll also want to talk with your
contractor about how you want the new railing to work with your posts. While some railings are purely aesthetic, some homeowners count on them to stop kids or guests from accidentally tripping off the side of the porch. So be sure your contractor knows what you need from your railing so they can ensure the posts are strong enough to support them.
