Key hurdles to overcome fall vegetable gardening

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, July 26, 2019

If you are frustrated with growing vegetables through our challenging Oklahoma summers, or even if you’ve mastered the art and just wish you could extend the growing season, consider fall gardening. By overcoming a couple of key hurdles, residents of our area can successfully grow many garden crops well into late October, or even November some years. The three biggest challenges to successful fall gardens are locating seeds or starts, getting seedlings off to a good start with very high soil temperatures, and preventing damage from early cold fronts. Fall gardening is not a big enough business in Oklahoma for most garden retailers

Home Grown KEITH REED to stock seedlings or starter plants. Even finding seeds can sometimes be a challenge so you’ll need to plan ahead and perhaps even consider growing your own starter plants indoors. As August is just around the corner, this piece of advice is a little late for this year, just keep in mind when it’s spring seed-buying time as they will easily store through the summer months under refrigeration. Overcoming high soil temperatures can be managed a few different ways.

OSU Fact Sheet #HLA-6009 Fall Gardening, offers some helpful options for protecting new seedlings by manipulating the planting furrow. This is hard to explain in this brief column, but the fact sheet does a nice job of visualizing the process. Mulching at seeding is also critical. Use straw or similar materials that resist compaction so small seedlings can easily find their way to the light. You may also shade the planting area with artificial

shade so that it does not receive direct sun all day. Shade cloth designed specifically for this can be purchased but something as simple as a burlap coffee sacks will work just as well. Burlap can even be placed directly on the soil as good temporary shade and mulch, especially for small seeded crops like lettuce and carrots. Just be sure and move it from being in direct contact with the soil to an above-ground position as soon as the seeds germinate. The average first freeze date for Payne County is about Oct. 30. However, if you’ve lived here a while, you know that we often get one or two sharp cold snaps

well before that date. Being prepared to cover or insulate plants for one or two nights can often extend the fall growing season for several weeks. This can be done on an individual plant basis for small gardens. It can also be easily done on a larger scale using season-extending techniques such as low tunnels. A low tunnel is a simple structure, usually constructed out of small diameter PVC pipe, that allows you to drape insulating fabric or plastic over the crops. Low tunnels can also extend the growing system in spring, by warming the soil and preventing damage from late frosts and freezes. Go to Okla-

homa Gardening’s You Tube channel at youtube.com/ oklahomagardening and type low tunnel in the search box for some helpful tips on this method of gardening. For more information on this or any other horticultural topic, you can con-

tact Keith Reed, the Horticulturist in the Payne County Extension office. Keith can be reached via email at keith.reed@ okstate.edu, phone at 405-747-8320, or in person at the Payne County Extension office, located at 315 W. 6th in Stillwater.

Secrets of a home stager By Cathy Hobbs Tribune News Service

Staging is the art of preparing and styling a home for sale. Unlike decorating and interior design, the intent and purpose of home staging is to use “lifestyle” selling techniques in order to allow a potential buyer to be able to envision themselves in a home. Gone should be personal photographs and unique color schemes, instead the approach should be one of neutrality in order to ensure your property appeals to the largest amount of potential buyers. Want some in-

sider tips? Here are some staging secrets. 1. Research. One of the biggest mistakes home sellers make is underestimating their competition. Ask yourself “Who will buy this house?” From here, it is important to present your home in its best possible light. Remember once a property is placed on the market it is no longer your home, but a product on the market for sale that will be compared with other products. 2. Paint! If you do nothing to your home

as possible. 5. Create a basic marketing plan. A seller may need their real estate agents help with this one. The goal of this step is to simply decide who your target buyer is, as in some cases this may influence the staging process. 6. De-personalize.

When a potential buyer walks into a property it is important for them to feel that it could be their home. Everything from personal photos to religious references should be removed. 7. Neutralize. Even something as simple as repainting or replacing carpeting

can be a deterrent for potential buyers. Taupes and grays are ideal colors to create a neutral, soothing color palette. 8. Return a room to its intended use. For example, a bedroom currently used as a home office, must be staged and styled as a bedroom.

guards and covers cost between $.40 and $10 per foot. You can expect installation to cost $9 per foot on average, but this will vary widely. Certain installation methods take more time. Snap-on guards go in quickly, while screws and bolts add to the installation time and cost. If you have a steeply pitched roof or multiple rooflines, the job will require more time and cost.

Although having gutter guards and hoods dramatically reduces the number of times you will have to clean out your gutters, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t ever have to do the work. Experts recommend cleaning your gutters at least once every two years, even with gutter guards and hoods installed. Here’s a look at the pros and cons of different gutter guards,

and their material cost: Metal mesh screens: These sheets of metal have holes punched through them and stop most debris. Anything smaller than the holes will still get through. They cost $1.20-$4 per foot. Micro mesh screens: These steel or aluminum frames are covered with fine wire mesh. It’s one of the most effective options, but the ma-

gutter. Debris flows off the edge. They’re effective, but cost between $4 and $8 per foot. Gutter brushes: Long rolls of brush inside the tray allow water to pass through but block leaves. They do need to be periodically cleaned. They cost about $4 per foot.

set by a liberal-leaning U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1985 but was essentially reversed by today’s more conservative court in late June. Until now, wrote Chief Justice John Roberts, a property owner found “himself [or herself] in a Catch-22: He cannot go to federal court without going to state court first; but if he goes to state court and loses, his claim will be barred in federal court.” The Supreme Court’s recent decision overturns that policy, thus allowing owners to go directly to federal court if they feel that their property rights have

been unlawfully violated by a local or state government -whether it’s through an outright confiscation or by passage

of a new regulation that chips away at their right to private “quiet contentment” of their home and land.

CDs at three for $5, Barza and Littlefield said. That can motivate people to buy more. Have a table where everything is priced for a dollar, and keep it replenished. People tend to gravitate to these tables, Littlefield added. If goods aren’t moving by midday, put up a sign that everything is half off after a certain time, or tell people that everything is half off tomorrow. “When people hear that, they suddenly want to

buy. It piques people’s interest,” he said. Having fun and being nice can ring registers. “If people are nice and funny, and we’re having a good time, it makes me want to buy something,” Littlefield said. said that for the past several years, her neighbors in a threeblock radius hold a yard sale, usually the first or second weekend in May. Theirs lasts a half-day, so it’s not too disruptive for people not participating. “It ends up being a fun neighborhood event,” she said, adding that neighbors take turns organizing it, spreading the word through flyers and email.

Yard sales are a great way to get a few extra bucks for items that might be just a little bit too valuable to toss or donate, but what if you don’t have a yard? Don’t let that stop you; think creatively instead. Yard sales are all about getting rid of stuff. Forget what you originally paid for something; price it to move. Still, there are ways to make your objects more attractive, so they will fetch more dollars. Bruce Littlefield, author of “Garage Sale America,” said to think about getting back a quarter on the dollar and realize that people will likely negotiate. Another tactic is not to list prices at all and just see what people will offer. “People definitely want to feel like they’ve gotten a good deal,” he

said. Organize items by use – kitchen items in one section, children’s toys in another, Littlefield said. Hang up or neatly fold clothing. “Think that you’re a store for the day. Make it a nice presentation,” he said. When Chicago’s Logan Square resident Josh Barza, who had a yard sale on his parkway, realized many of the goods he was selling were records, posters and other memorabilia, he branded it the “Aging Hipsters Sale.” A friend gave him flyer designs on the theme, and Barza posted them in areas where wouldbe buyers might gather and other places people stand around. He said this likely helped attract early buyers who wanted the best pickings; some bought other items he was selling, boosting sales overall. Consider bundling, like offering books or
