Pecan weevil management for homeowners
A2
Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, August 5, 2016
If you currently have a healthy looking pecan crop but you typically suffer from insect damage in the form of an empty nut with a small round hole in it, now is the time to consider taking action against the pecan weevil. The pecan weevil overwinters and develop several inches deep in the soil, emerging about this time of year, typically after significant rains like we received last week. This insect can be very tricky to control with an insecticide application for several reasons. The insects aren’t a problem every year. While the weevil is in the soil, it is too deep to be affected by a soil applied insecticide. Movement from the soil into the tree can take
Home Grown KEITH REED place relatively quickly making it difficult to time an insecticide application as the insect is on the move from the ground into the tree. And finally, homeowners typically lack the equipment to make a proper spray application to an entire tree. While this may not sound very encouraging, there are a couple of alternative options to control this pest. Consider installing circle traps. Circle traps are relatively simple and designed to capture
the weevil as it climbs up the trunk on its way into the tree canopy, the insect’s preferred method of tree entry. While this method does not eliminate weevil damage, it can certainly help reduce the numbers. Circle traps can be a doit-yourself project or they can be purchased. Contact our office if you would like detailed information of building and installing your own traps. You can also see a working example of a circle trap at the Botanic Garden at OSU.
Locate the chicken coop and you can’t miss it. Weevils can also fly short distances so it can also help to limit movement into pecan trees by keeping tall grass down under and around trees. This eliminates a “launch point” for the insects.
While we are on the subject of pecans, consider attending a free Pecan Thinning Field Day at the Cimarron Valley Research Station in Perkins on Tuesday August 9th. The event will be held from 4-6pm with a hamburger cookout to follow. Address is
10820 South Jardot. If you are familiar with the area, that is about ½ mile north of the Perkins Sonic. Contact the OSU Horticulture Department if you would like more information at 405744-6139. For more information on this or any other horticultural
topic, you can contact Keith Reed, the Horticulturist in the Payne County Extension office. Keith can be reached via email at keith.reed@ okstate.edu, phone at 405-747-8320, or in person at the Payne County Extension office, located at 315 W. 6th in Stillwater.

Birds will flock to this backyard feeder By Cathy Hobbs Tribune News Service
With summer here, you’re probably spending more time outdoors, so why not add a pop of color to your backyard and invite some birds to join you? Materials: Empty coffee can with plastic lid Can opener Spray paint Scissors Duct tape in various colors Yarn
Birdseed Glue (optional) Directions: 1. Clean the empty coffee can and use a can opener to remove the bottom piece. 2. Cut the plastic lid in half, spray paint both halves and let dry. It may need two coats. (I tried craft paint but the coverage was poor. Spray paint worked better for me.) 3. Decorate the can with the duct
tape. Have fun with it! 4. Attach a halflid to both ends of the can. You may need to glue them on if they’re too loose. 5. Wrap yarn through the opening a couple of times (I did it three times), making sure it’s long enough to hang at your desired location. Fill with birdseed and enjoy the show! Source: momtastic.com

ing for hundreds of years. Hand-split shingles were usually split from logs that were free of knots, and once they were split each shingle was smoothed by hand. Because the split wood varied in size and thickness, each shingle was planed as it was installed. Older
damaged hand-split shakes can be replaced with a similar type of wood. In the 1980s, as I remember it, cedar shakes were more often machine split or sawed, and each shingle was more uniform than most hand split shingles. This new uniformly cut shingle did
not require the additional task of hand dressing of each shingle’s face, but they were easier to install. Because the sawed shingle face is untreated, it can absorb more water than the older hand split shingles and would tend to cup or warp over time. If you are consid-
ering replacing the cedar shakes with a standard asphalt shingle, it would probably be less costly than trying to remove and replace individual shakes over the entire roof area. If the roofer is wanting to add underlayment, it is because the cedar shakes are attached
to a piece of lath or a single board. The lath is not designed to carry the weight of an asphalt shingle, and it will be necessary to add 4-foot by 8-foot sheets of plywood or OSB underlayment on top of the wood lath after the cedar shakes have all been removed.

Mid-summer always arrives too quickly. While gardens are brimming over with their lush blooms, and markets are filled with fresh fruits and veggies grown close to home, end of season summer sales begin to crop up like unwanted weeds. But rather than mourn the beginning of the end, why not take advantage of this time to revitalize your backyard oasis? Fantastic deals abound in outdoor furnishings, dishware and garden features. Lawn and roadside sales can be a gold mine too. And for do-ityourselfers, this is the perfect time to work on a project. Choose one or two ideas, get the kids involved and enjoy

Watch your fingers; these plants are hungry the nicest, most generous people you’ll ever meet,” said Eric Trygg, a longtime society member. “He’s one of the best growers of carnivorous plants. He helps everybody out.” Hernandez particularly has a knack for getting unusual specimens started, Trygg said. The same applies to the way he encourages other gardeners and hobbyists. “He loves to nurture little plants and grow them into these beautiful specimens,” Trygg said. “He has so much knowledge and he shares it with anybody who’s interested. He’s really one of our favorite members.” Hernandez joined the Sacramento society when he and his wife, Anne, moved to Cameron Park in 1998. After 35 years with the county of San Francisco, he retired as a golf course superintendent and changed his full-time focus from greens to pitchers and cobras. “They’re easy to grow,” he said. “They’re very
self-sufficient – as long as there are flies around. It helps if you live next to a cow.” Contrary to their exotic appearance, carnivorous plants are not tropical; they’re mostly native to the American South. They thrive in boggy soils that never completely dry out. They also like bright light and pure water; their roots need to stay wet. “Chlorine will kill them; never use unfiltered tap water,” Hernandez warned. “They actually like full sun with a little afternoon shade.” Although they grow wild in swampy areas from Texas to North Carolina, many carnivorous plants have become threatened because less than 5 percent of their original habitat remains, according to experts. California’s native bug-eaters, cobra lilies, grow in secluded spots in Northern California and Southern Oregon. Hernandez recalled his own pilgrimage to see

these rare plants near Quincy. The cobra lilies bloom from May through July. “The cobras grow up these steep hills where water is always dripping down,” he said. “The canyon was very narrow.
We kept going in search of more cobras and we got stuck. We couldn’t back up and we slashed a tire on rocks. We had to walk out 4 miles to get help, but it was worth it.” Now, Hernandez has several green
and red cobra lilies in his collection. Shallow trays of water imitate their drippy habitat. “Put them some place in the sun where they can catch their own bugs,” Hernandez said. “They’ll be happy.”

Domaine
If you’ve ever moved into an apartment with a balcony, you know the initial excitement that comes with daydreams of long summer nights spent outdoors, visions of morning coffees under the sun, and aspirations of neighborly cocktail parties at sunset. The initial intention is always to create an outdoor space to rival the greatest landscape artists, so why does our outdoor decor always seem to become an afterthought? Even though outdoor spaces can’t always be used year-round, it’s no excuse to leave them undecorated. If you’ve reached August and your balcony is still a sad empty space – or if you’ve haphazardly purchased an outdoor set at the local hardware store and called it a day – it’s not too late to make your alfresco space Insta-worthy. With a few simple tricks, you can whip your balcony into shape and even extend it into the fall months. Wait no more –the time to transform your balcony is now. Start with plants. An outdoor area should never
be without greenery. Flower boxes and potted plants are an easy, lowcost way to infuse greens into your outdoor space, no heavy lifting required. Ground it with a rug. Outdoor rugs are prettier than ever, and companies like Dash & Albert are coming up with hundreds of fun and weather-resistant patterns. You ground your living room with a rug, so why not do the same with your balcony? Embrace the bistro table. Nothing is more satisfying than having breakfast outside and basking in the sun before a long workday. When space is limited, all you need are a couple of chairs and
a smaller bistro table. When in doubt, do stripes. Outdoor stripes are quintessential summer decorating. If you’re upholstering furniture, purchasing outdoor pillows, or shopping for an umbrella, always look at thick stripes in bold colors to bring life to your space. Plant a vertical garden. The easiest way to hide unsightly neighboring balconies is to block the view with a vertical garden. Simply install a trellis, and hang away. Just make sure your building approves it before making significant changes. Throw in pillows. Don’t think you’re limited to the pillows that came
with your outdoor sofa. Just as outdoor rugs are now more varied than ever, so are their pillow counterparts. This means you can infuse the same decor personality indoors and out! Consider lighting. Hanging out on your balcony on a balmy summer night is a luxury – as long as you can see around you. If your balcony is covered, consider hanging string lights to create a starry nighttime effect. If it isn’t, wall sconces or even candle-filled hurricanes are great alternatives. Put in the finishing touches. Add final decorating touches with vases, candles and other accents to finish
off the space. Treat your balcony as you would any other room in your house to get a layered decor effect.
Warm it up for fall. When temperatures start cooling down in September, extend the season by fur-

Best siding choice for golf course homes By Angie Hicks Angie’s List
Dear Angie: We live on a golf course and golf balls always hit our house. We need to replace the siding, but it doesn’t make sense to do it with the same product that’ll get damaged over and over again. Is there a product that won’t crack or show damage when hit by a golf ball? – M. Doyle, Hagerstown, Md. Dear M.: While golf course communities offer great views and home values, houses often find themselves in the wayward crosshairs of hacks and pros alike. Many homeowners, especially
those within range of tee boxes, spend their time constantly checking for and fixing golf ball damage. As for siding options, foam-backed vinyl offers more protection than standard vinyl, but it isn’t enough to eliminate cracks caused by golf balls. While fiber cement features increased durability, you’ll find another type of siding on an increasing number of golf course clubhouses nationwide – engineered wood. BENEFITS OF ENGINEERED WOOD SIDING Considered a green building material, engineered wood brings the look of old school wood,
but it’s cheaper, easier to install and sometimes guaranteed up to 50 years. The composite product is designed to resist damage, moisture-based deterioration and even pests. Engineered wood consists of treated wood strands and a resin binder. One manufacturer adds zinc borate to combat fungal decay and termites. Siding comes in 16-foot boards, which means fewer seams and waste than common 12foot varieties. You can buy finished or ready-topaint siding, with an extensive selection of trim possibilities. Installation costs $6 to $9 per square foot. That’s more than vinyl, but less than fiber ce-
ment. The value isn’t limited to when you own the home. A 2016 report based on a national survey of real estate professionals found engineered wood had a 78.6 percent payback at home resale, the best of any siding type. NASA VIDEO EVIDENCE NASA recently tested engineered wood siding and fiber cement versus golf ball, baseball, rock and marble impact at high velocity. The results were clear, as engineered wood held up better across the board. While golf balls made a hole in fiber cement at 49.4 mph, engineered wood remained dent-free at nearly 64 mph.

Why two-bedroom homes are better than just one Whether buying a house or condominium, it’s usually best to purchase a twoor three-bedroom property rather than one that has only a single bedroom. DEAR MR. MYERS: I am shopping for my first home. I am single and can swing the purchase of a one-bedroom condo pretty easily, but my real estate agent thinks I should stretch my budget and buy a two-bedroom condo because she claims that two-bedroom units have more appreciation potential. What do you think I should do? ANSWER: Assuming that the payments won’t smother you, your best bet is to follow your agent’s advice and purchase a condo with two bedrooms instead of one. Two-bedroom houses and condos usually appreciate faster than one-bedroom units because they appeal to a broader group of buyers. The resale market for one-bedroom homes is usually limited to single people or to married couples who don’t have kids. Two-bedroom homes appeal to both of those groups, but also attract small fam-
About Real Estate DAVID MYERS ilies and even unrelated single persons who “team up” with each other to buy a home. Since two-bedroom units are more in demand, they typically rise faster in value. If you buy a two-bedroom home and later decide that your mortgage payments are too high, you could look for a roommate to rent one of the bedrooms from you. Although you could use the rent that your “roomie” pays to meet your mortgage bills, you would keep all of the profits when you eventually sell, because you would be the only owner of record. And if you decide against selling but instead convert the unit to a rental, you’ll find that two-bedroom properties are easier to lease out because they appeal to a far larger group of tenants. *** REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: The median cost of a two-bedroom apartment across the U.S. is $1,300, according to a new report by internet apart-
ment-finder www.apartmentlist.com, compared to $1,140 for a one-bedroom place. A typical two-bedroom rental unit in San Francisco costs $4,650 each month, the highest in the nation. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: The home we recently purchased does not have central air-conditioning, so we bought a box fan and put it on the floor of our living room. My husband insists that the fan needs to blow directly on us to keep us cool, but I think it’s better to have the fan facing the open window so it will blow all of the hot air that is already inside our home to the outside. Who’s right? ANSWER: It depends on the temperature, both inside and outside of your home, and how you position the fan. A fan that’s placed in or near a window can draw in cool air from the outside, or push warm air out. It
sounds as if you want to blow the hot air out of your living room, so you should place the fan with its blades facing an open window. The fan will help suck out the hot air from inside and send it out into the great beyond. In autumn, though, you might want to face the fan the other way. It will draw the air that’s outside of the house inside to your living room, making it cooler and more comfortable. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: We are remodeling our kitchen. One salesperson we talked with at a kitchen-remod-
eling store says we should choose granite for our new countertops, but a guy at another store says we should choose quartz. What would be best? ANSWER: That’s a tough question, considering all the different types of materials that are used to make countertops today – from granite and quartz to marble, ceramic tile and even laminated wood. Both granite and quartz are sturdy materials, which makes them perfect for high-use kitchens. They each are stain- and heat-resistant, an important consideration if
you have kids who tend to spill their juice or soda on the countertop or if you absent-mindedly put a boiling pot or hot skillet on the counter without a protective pad underneath. Still, they each have their drawbacks. Granite, unlike quartz, needs to be cleaned and resealed every few months or at least once a year, a representative for Consumer Reports said. Quartz (often called “engineered stone”) generally doesn’t need periodic resealing and comes in several different colors, but its seams are more visible and its edges can chip.
Granite tends to be a little more expensive to buy and install, according to visits I made to six home-improvement stores and kitchen-remodeling specialists, but not by much. Two of those remodeling pros I visited provided a useful tip: If you choose granite, realize that the color and marbling of the stone in the showroom samples may be much different from what the retailer actually delivThere’s a sensation building over the Democratic convention speech of Khizr Khan, a Pakistani-born Virginia lawyer whose son Humayun was

Party on a cart: Let the good times roll when designing carts is to forget to add elements that bring in some visual height. Anything tall is great, like a lamp or a showy bouquet of flowers. Your top shelf should be filled with the items you’ll need first, and need the most, like appetizers, bottles of beverages, and bar tools. Cocktail napkins can go on the bottom shelf, along with more glasses, full bottles and additional snacks. (If you have pets, though, you might want to reconsider putting food down this low. My golden retriever Lyric would gobble up these treats in a second.)
LOOKS MATTER If it’s true that we eat with our eyes, then chances are, we drink with them too. So, make sure your bar cart is something to pop a cork over. The first place to start is your drinks containers, since they are the stars of the show. In this lovely display, the offering is simple: lemonade, ice tea and a bowl of popcorn, but it looks like a million bucks, thanks to some glam urns. We use these clear glass urns all the time when we entertain because they look great with every kind of drink, and they are super easy to use _ just pour
in your liquid and open the nozzle!. If your favorite beverage brands come in less than attractive bottles, pour the spirits into a decanter. You don’t have to spend a bundle on crystal. We have lots of cheater pieces that look just as nice for a fraction of the cost. Trays are an essential on a bar cart display, whether to pull together a group of bottles into one attractive unit, or to hold glasses or appetizers. On the shelf below, you could have an ice bucket and cocktail glasses. SIZED TO SUIT While I’m all about using a bar
