Pilot light won’t light on gas log fireplace By C. Dwight Barnett Tribune News Service

Some people complain of the odors while others complain of headaches and other health problems. However, vent free gas logs tend to be more efficient. If you have a remote control, first make sure the batteries have been replaced in the control units. Next make sure the gas is turned on to the log. There should be a shutoff valve near the fireplace. I have found the shutoff valves inside the fireplace, under the fireplace or in a cabinet next to the fireplace. With the gas on, push in and hold the pilot valve while igniting the pilot light. Once the pilot is lit, hold the pilot valve in for 60 seconds. This allows the pilot flame to

heat the thermocouple attached to the log. After 60 seconds release the pilot valve and turn the log’s operating valve “on” making sure you are clear of the log. If the pilot does not stay on, you may have a defective thermocouple. Some thermocouples can be easily replaced; just make sure to purchase the correct length and fitting of the replacement thermocouple. If the pilot light flickers and then goes out, the gas pressure may be low. Have a plumber check the gas pressure to your home or even at the gas log. You can also try cleaning the pilot tube using a can of compressed air used for dusting. Note: you MUST make

sure the gas is off and there are no flames present prior to using an aerosol duster. Spray air

Q: My gas log fireplace worked just fine last winter, but I couldn’t light the pilot light this fall. There’s no brand name on the log so I don’t know where or who to call for instructions. Can you help? A: There are different types of gas logs, and it would have helped to know which type you have. There are vented gas logs and unvented or “vent free” logs. Both types of logs may or may not have a remote control feature. Usually, either type of log can be fueled by natural or propane gas (depending on the gas valve that

is installed). Your problem may be as simple as having an empty propane supply tank. If you have a chimney or flue for the fireplace it is more likely you have a vented gas log, although a vent free gas log can be used as long as the damper is fully closed. Due to health concerns, possible carbon monoxide poisoning and fire hazards, do not install a vented gas log in a non-venting fireplace or other enclosure. There are many in the industry who even resist using the vent free gas logs in any enclosed space. All of the by-products of combustion of the natural or propane gas will be trapped in the room with the vent free gas logs.

September is the best time of the year to establish a cool season (shady) lawn. For our region, Tall Fescue is the turfgrass of choice for this. It’s not ideal, but it is the best option we have given our environmental considerations. Recognize that even lawns under the best of care may need to be refreshed every few years with an overseeding. Begin by having your soil tested if that has not been done in the last several years as major nutrient or pH adjustments are better done prior to overseeding. As far as soil preparation, complete tillage is not suggested as this will damage critical roots of nearby trees. A vigorous raking should be adequate to loosen enough soil to provide a good seedbed. If raking is not effective, an aerator can be rented to accomplish the same task. Be advised that a lawn prepped with an aerator can cause seed to come up in clumps. This can make for an adequate lawn seen from a distance but you may not be pleased with the up-close appearance. Apply fertilizer and any other amendments that are suggested by the soil sample

The social aspect of dining is something I hold near and dear (as do many of my fellow hosts and hostesses, I’m sure). Using a meal to express your passions, not only with food but with design, is something you can tell was a big part of his trip. We wanted to make sure that translated to our tablescape with sharable plates located throughout the table instead of a traditional setup. To incorporate the simplistic but beautiful atmosphere of the outdoor oasis,

we added topiaries and more lemon accents to the table to re-create the feeling of nature at your fingertips. There are many ways to get inspired by different locations, and I am so happy Brown was able to come play with us and bring you this beautiful display. Until next time, happy decorating!

plant trees. Water newly planted trees and bulbs with an inch and a half of water every week. Trim tree branches away from the roof and gutters. HOW TO FERTILIZE YOUR LAWN For cool-season grasses, fall lawn fertilization helps promote healthy roots, which translates to a more verdant and pest- and disease-resistant lawn for spring. If you’re not interested in doing the job yourself or are concerned you’ll harm your grass, consider hiring a lawn care treatment professional to spruce up your greenery for you. If you’d like to take on the task yourself, first find out what type of grass you have. Check your local county extension or do some online research to determine

your grass type. Most cool-season grasses can be fertilized in late spring or late fall. Warm-season lawns are best fertilized in the late spring or summer. For cool-season grasses, experts generally recommend fertilizing twice in fall: once in early fall with a high-nitrogen fertilizer to strengthen blade growth and again in late fall with a high-phosphorus fertilizer to promote root growth. Choose your fertilizer carefully and read the labels to make sure they’re compatible with

your grass type. Ideally, wait for a cool day and some rain. Spread the fertilizer carefully, using gloves to protect your skin. If you’re using a granular fertilizer instead of liquid, use a fertilizer spreader, which you can buy at your local hardware store. Water after fertilizing. Most dry fertilizer products require water to be effective, but you can usually wait a few days for rain after fertilizing. However, if kids or pets will use the lawn soon after treatment or temperatures are above

85 degrees, water the lawn shortly after fertilizing. Be sure to main-

while I was under contract with the agent has since called me and has agreed to pay me close to my original asking price. If I sell, would I still owe the agent a 6% sales commission? ANSWER: Yes, almost certainly. Most listing agreements include a provision that requires a seller to pay the agent a commission, even if the contract recently expired, if the buyer first visited the property while the salesperson was actively

marketing it. Courts in nearly every part of the nation have upheld the legality of such clauses. You probably wouldn’t owe a commission if the buyer had never visited the property when the agent was still trying to sell it, but that’s not the case here. Because you’ll likely have to pay the commission anyway, you might as well call the agent with the good news and have her handle all the paperwork and shepherd the deal through the closing process.
