Horticulture tips for September Given the incredible weather we’ve had the last week or so, one can’t help but wonder if we are going to have any early fall? Who knows but one thing is certain; the weeds we’ve been talking about the last couple of weeks are ready to jump out of the ground so this is your last reminder. Also included are some other timely tasks for your September landscape: • If annual bluegrass, cheat, chickweed, henbit, and other spring weeds typically give you problems, apply a fall preemergent NOW. The window of opportunity is quickly closing as these weeds typically germinate right around this time of year. Some products control these weeds better than others so check the label or contact the Extension office for more information. Remember, you cannot apply preemergent herbicides in areas you are planning to seed! Be especially cautious when applying various “weed and feed” products. Make sure the product will not interfere with your plans for your landscape. • Seeding cool
Home Grown KEITH REED season lawns now gives you the greatest opportunity for successful establishment. Tall fescue is generally the turfgrass of choice for shady lawns in our area, but mixes of Tall fescue with a small percentage of Kentucky bluegrass have also shown to work well. Perennial rye should only be considered a temporary turfgrass in our region as it cannot typically make it through the summer. Annual ryegrass use in the home
lawn is generally discouraged, even for temporary cover or an overseeding application. As this grass matures, it becomes very tough and difficult to mow, leaving a very unsightly appearance. Left to go to seed, it can also become a troublesome weed. • Continue monitoring for fall webworm problems. Early control is much more effective than waiting until webs are fully formed.

Who should I hire to install a paver driveway? By Angie Hicks Angie’s List
4
Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, August 28, 2015
Dear Angie: I’m interested in a paver-style driveway. What kind of company is typically the best to hire for this? – Thomas S., Seminole, Fla. Dear Thomas: Paver driveways generally cost more than other types, but they can really boost your home’s curb appeal. Your best bet is to hire a contractor that specializes in pavers, such as a paver design company. Many landscape design, hardscaping and outdoor living companies install paver driveways. Focus on those with experience installing such driveways and
have them provide pictures of recent projects. Paver driveways offer many choices of paver shape, size, color and texture, including clay, brick, stone or cement. Also, pavers require little maintenance, aren’t prone to cracking and are easier to repair than asphalt or concrete because an individual paver can simply be removed and replaced. Experts say concrete pavers have a strength rating of 9,000 pounds per square inch and are well-designed to handle the weight of vehicles. (The EPA says the average weight of model year 2012 vehicles is 3,977
pounds.) Paver driveways tend to be stronger than concrete counterparts and their expected life span is in the same range as asphalt and concrete, which is 20 to 30 years, respectively. The price of a paver driveway can vary widely, from $1,800 to $14,000, depending on the size and scope of the project. That compares to a range of $2,300 to $10,300 for asphalt and $3,500 to $7,000 for concrete. A paver driveway can cost about $12 to $15 per square foot on average, while a concrete driveway runs about $5 per square foot. Paver driveways cost more because
pavers are individually installed, which is laborintensive. Paver driveways are a viable option for homeowners throughout the country. In California, they’re considered the best option for earthquakes because concrete slabs, less flexible, are more prone to cracking. When considering who to hire to install a paver driveway, look for companies with positive consumer reviews on a trusted online site. In addition, find out which contractors belong to a trade association, such as the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, which
offers a concrete paver installer certification. Such credentials indicate a dedication to
industry best and latest practices. Also, be sure that your contractor provides proof of

How to clean siding buildup By C. Dwight Barnett Tribune News Service
Q: Please tell me what can be done to keep the green buildup off siding! What causes this? Can anything be put on the siding to deter it? Does insulation in the building have anything to do with it? A: The green buildup is most likely algae that tend to grow in shady areas, particularly on the north side of structures. To grow on vinyl siding, besides moisture, the algae needs a food source such as dust, dirt or the sap and sugars from trees and shrubs near the home. Algae can also feed off some fertilizers used to treat lawns.
If you have a sprinkler system, check to see if it impacts the siding, because it can provide additional moisture that can accelerate algae growth. When it comes to cleaning, there are specialized products designed for the treatment of algae on vinyl siding. Simple Green seems to be the choice for many homeowners, although a Tide mix or an oxygen bleach mix works well. If you want to use a home remedy, try mixing a solution of half water and half oxygen bleach with a small amount of TSP to hand wash the siding. My friend Danny Lipford of todayshomeowner.co m suggests using “1

gallon water, 1/3 cup powered laundry detergent and 2/3 cup TSP (trisodium phosphate) cleaner.” Many reports I have read say the TSP helps to keep the algae off the siding for up to five years. When working with cleaners and chemicals make sure to wear protective attire such as a longsleeved shirt, long pants, gloves and eye protection. When using any chemical or cleaner near grass and plants make sure to water the area affected both before and after cleaning. To protect any warranty that was provided with the siding products, contact the siding manufacturer for information on cleaning and maintaining their product.

their home-selling clients. Good agents may certainly recommend one particular offer over another, but the seller must still be presented with any offer that is made -- even if it’s for only $1. Your letter states that you sold your home “for a very good price. This suggests that your agent did an outstanding job of marketing the property, and the profit you realized from the sale easily offsets the relatively small amount of time that you might have spent reviewing offers that appeared ridiculously low. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: I live in a townhome development
that is governed by a homeowners association. One of the association’s directors died suddenly and the board appointed a new member to take her place, without calling for a special election. The new director is stupid and nasty. Did the board have the right to arbitrarily name a new director without
a vote of the development’s residents? ANSWER: Probably, although you’d have to check the association’s bylaws to get a more definitive answer. The bylaws of most associations allow their directors to automatically fill a seat that unexpectedly becomes vacant without first calling a special election,
in part because such elections can be costly and timeconsuming. But if you personally check the bylaws and discover that the directors don’t have such power, file a written complaint with the board and ask that an election be held. If the directors won’t honor the request, contact your state’s real estate department for help.
