Parents’ home equity can affect student’s college financial aid Some universities and colleges will slash the amount of money that they’ll offer to a student if their family’s home is worth much more than was paid for it. DEAR DAVE: Our daughter is about to start her senior year in high school, but she took a lot of “extra credit” classes and will be eligible to graduate in January instead of next June. She plans to go to college. Will the (roughly) $80,000 in equity we have in our longtime home prevent her from getting a financial aid package from the college that she chooses? ANSWER: It largely depends on which college or university that your daughter hopes to attend. Though some schools don’t expect parents to use their home equity to pay for tuition or other educational expenses, others will indeed reduce the amount of financial aid if the family’s home is worth a lot more than Mom and Dad paid for it. The majority of public schools, including many staterun universities, do not consider the parents’ equity when making a financial aid offer. It’s a different

DAVID story at several of the 2,700 private colleges and universities in the U.S. Many of those not only ask parents about their home equity, but also expect them to tap it to help pay for their offspring’s higher education. The financial aid or admissions office at the school that your daughter hopes to attend can tell you whether the equity that you have in your house will affect the size of the aid package that she can get. Even if the school will indeed consider your home equity when fashioning an aid package, make sure that you ask its representative if the institution offers any special types of property-related exemptions or exclusions. For example, some colleges and universities won’t count parental equity if, say, Mom or Dad is elderly or disabled. Of course, there are a variety of different private and

expect to pay? ANSWER: Laminate flooring typically costs between $3 and $7 per square foot, experts at online realty website freshome.com say, including the cost of installation. Hardwood floors usually run $5 to $10 a square foot, installed. Exact prices vary depending on several factors, including the precise materials used and the availability of local labor. Not surprisingly, both types of flooring have their advantages and drawbacks. Laminate, while roughly half the cost of hardwood, is also fairly simple to install. It comes in a variety of colors and is relatively easy to maintain with a vacuum or broom and a damp mop. On the downside, laminate is often slippery. Also, when it is dented by a fallen coffee cup or
other type of accident, it usually can’t be sanded or refurbished. The entire board or plank may need to be replaced and its color might not match the rest of the floor. Though hardwood costs more, its lifespan is typically far longer because it can easily be refinished. It also tends to add more to a home’s resale value than laminate flooring does. Perhaps hardwood flooring’s biggest drawback is that scratches from moving around furniture or from basic foot traffic patterns can detract from its appearance. And, because it’s a natural wood product – unlike laminate, which has additives in its synthetic surface to protect against ultraviolet rays – many experts say that hardwood isn’t a good choice for rooms that get a lot of sunlight.

Correction: In last week’s column, I left out a key word in the discussion on webworms. Webworms are NOT a significant pest for pecans and treatment for them is generally unnecessary, especially for the homeowner. The summer of 2020 has turned out to be a better than average year for tall fescue lawns for most of our area. Even so, there is a good chance your cool season lawn may need some rejuvenation to keep it looking its best. September to early October is the best time of the year to do this so now is the time to begin preparations. Begin by having your soil tested if this has not been done in the last few years as major nutrient or pH adjustments are best done prior to reseeding. As far as soil preparation, deep tillage is not suggested, especially if important trees are close by as critical tree roots will be damaged. Oftentimes, a vigorous raking will be adequate to loosen the soil enough to provide a good seedbed. If raking is not effective, an aerator or dethatcher can be rented to accomplish the same task. Be advised that a
