When a bank or other potential creditor goes trolling a bureau’s reports to find consumers who may merit a preapproved offer – or when you personally order a report on yourself – it’s considered a soft inquiry. Because you aren’t actually applying for a new form of credit, such queries won’t appear on your report and will not impact your score. A hard inquiry occurs when you formally apply for a loan or other type of credit and the bank or retailer proceeds to order a report as part of its decision-making process. The query will stay on your report for about two years and will initially send your score slightly lower, but its impact will lessen as time passes.

Mice and other small critters that normally live outside during the warm months like to move inside when it turns cold, so make sure to fill any small holes near the bottom of your home and cover any larger gaps with heavy-duty hardware cloth. bureaus will think that we’re looking for more. Are such offers reported to credit bureaus? ANSWER: No, such offers aren’t reported to credit bureaus and thus won’t affect your score – unless, of course, you complete the application that’s enclosed in the letter and return it to open a new account. Credit-card companies and retailers often deluge recent homebuyers with preapproved offers, figuring that they might need financing to buy everything from new furniture to lawnmowers. There are two types of inquiries in the credit industry. One is called a “soft inquiry,” and the other is considered a hard one.

need to ensure that your roof is in good shape. You can give it a cursory visual inspection by climbing a ladder and using binoculars, but the chore is usually best left to a roofing professional. Either way, any missing or faulty shingles or tiles will need to be repaired or replaced to help prevent water damage when the rains come. *** DEAR DAVE: Ever since we moved into our new home in June, we have been flooded with junk mail for preapproved credit cards. Check the caulking around windows, doors and any opening where wires or pipes enter the house. If necessary, recaulk those areas to prevent heat from escaping from the inside and driving up your utility bills. Use a hand broom or trough to clean leaves and other debris from your rain gutters and downspouts, flush any remaining residue out with a garden hose, check the joints that hold the system together, and tighten any loose clamps or screws to keep it firmly attached to the roof and walls. Owners should perform some basic maintenance chores now that autumn has arrived. DEAR DAVE: We bought a window air conditioner earlier this year. Do we have to remove it now that the weather is getting cooler and we won’t need to use it until next year? ANSWER: Probably not. Most modern window air conditioners are built to withstand colder weather, so they don’t have to be removed when outside temperatures begin to drop. But experts say that taking it out, or at least protecting its exterior with a weather-resistant cover, will prolong its life. Whether you leave the unit in the window or take it out, clean or change its

Horticulture Tips for October Consider the following landscape/ garden tasks as we transition into fall: (written under the assumption that our late May-like evening temperatures will break soon)! • If you use an automatic irrigation system, make sure it’s adjusted properly for this time of year. If it is not equipped with a rain shut off sensor, please consider adding one before next season. • Continue planting cool season ornamentals like pansies, kale, snapdragons, asters and mums. • Spring flowering bulbs such as tulips, hyacinths, crocus, and daffodils can also be planted beginning late this month. • October is also a great month to plant trees. Purchase quality plants that have proven

Home Grown KEITH REED themselves in this part of the world. Our new OSU Fact Sheet #6456 Selecting Deciduous Trees for Oklahoma is a good resource to begin the process. • Cool season lawn seeding can still be done in October, although the earlier in the month, the better to take advantage of ideal growing conditions. • Some fall leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce can still be planted assuming some frost protection is available for early cold snaps.
