Planting trees in clay soil With fall tree-planting season fast approaching, the time is right to talk about dealing with a common problem the majority of us in Payne County face; heavy clay soils. While some tree species of trees can do fine (some even preferring) in these soils, many struggle. Fruit trees such as peaches are one popular example. While it’s not practical to replace the soil, there are some things you can do to improve a tree’s opportunity to thrive. Heavy soil isn’t all bad – everything else being equal, it is likely going to contain more nutrients and has a greater water-holding capacity than a sandy soil. Drainage (or lack of) is the primary problem. Roots must have water, but they must also have plenty of air. The roots can’t get to the air if the soil remains water logged for an extended period of time. (Note, there are always exceptions in the plant world. A bald cypress is a great example of a tree that can do just fine growing directly in water or in saturated soil). Roots also need room to grow. The

It is not helpful to try to amend the soil in the backfilled hole with sand, peat moss, or some other amendment. In some cases, this can even be detrimental. Think of the planting hole as a clay pot. The roots will happily grow and circle in the amended soil (pot) but will resist putting the effort into expanding beyond the amended area, taking the path of least resistance. Ways to improve a kitchen pantry People have been spending more time at home in 2020 than in years past, and certain projects around the house have become a priority One home improvement idea that serves the double benefit of creating organization and making cooking at home more efficient is to reimagine the kitchen pantry. A pantry is a room or closet where food, beverages and linens or dishes are stored. Pantries can be highly useful spaces that provide ancillary storage in kitchens. Many modern homes
are equipped with pantries, but older homes may require some modification to create more useful pantries. Whether starting from scratch or modifying an existing pantry, these tips can help projects go more smoothly. • Maximize vertical storage. Utilizing vertical areas can help increase storage capacity. Build in extra nooks by investing in undershelf storage baskets. These baskets can instantly create designated areas for different types of ingredients. Homeowners also can look for ways to use the in-

Risky renting to potential buyers Sellers get frustrated when a transaction goes beyond its scheduled closing date, but letting the buyers move in before title formally transfers is fraught with potential problems. DEAR MR. MYERS: We are selling our home to a young couple, but closing has been delayed by a few weeks because the appraiser and lender have been backlogged with work. The couple would like to move in even though the sale hasn’t been officially completed, and is willing to pay us a modest amount of rent until the title to the property finally changes hands. This would be fine with us, because the new house we are buying has already been transferred to our names, and we are now looking at the possibility of

DAVID making payments on two mortgages until the sale of our old home closes. What do you think of this plan? ANSWER: Not much. I certainly understand why you are anxious to avoid making payments on two mortgages instead of one, but the “modest” amount of rent that you say the buyers are willing to pay could pale when compared to the problems that may occur if you allow them to move into your old house before the sale is finalized. are able to move to areas with less concentrated poverty, their kids have higher lifetime earnings and are able to move up the economic ladder,” she said. “We talk about health so much in terms of pills or interventions, but a stable, decent, affordable home is the best intervention I can provide to my families. Right now, that’s under threat for millions of Americans.” Suglia, who co-authored an AHA scientific statement about housing and health, said an array of factors, such as stress, can impact health when a family is worried about paying their rent or being able to stay in their home. Under chronic stress, physiological
systems may become dysregulated. Additionally, being in a constant state of worry may increase the likelihood that people turn to smoking, alcohol, and fat and sugar-laden foods, she said. That all can have physical effects. “When your housing becomes unaffordable, you may neglect medication, health care, food and heat,” she said. “All these things only exacerbate or create additional health problems.” While local and federal governments grapple with the issue, many nonprofit organizations are stepping in to help. For example, the American Heart Association and Enterprise Community Partners, a
national affordable housing nonprofit, recently held a free webinar to help faith organizations learn strategies to convert unused property into affordable homes. Funded in part by the Kresge Foundation, the groups will hold additional workshops in late 2020 and early 2021. In Chicago’s Washington Heights, the Endeleo Institute, named for a Swahili term for growth and progress, is doing similar work to repurpose assets in that predominantly Black neighborhood’s 95th Street corridor. The group also is working with the AHA, Northwestern University and other institutions to organize farmers markets and launch health education efforts.
