disturbance to an area this large in the vast majority of landscape situations. However, it is this entire area that should be looked critically before a construction project begins and disturbance in these areas should be minimized as much as possible. Simple steps to minimize problems include: Having a straightforward discussion with contractors, construction crews to make it very clear that the sensitive areas are to be protected. Once again, the time delay-to-damage is important here. Just because crews may have always used shady areas to store materials, mix mortar,

or park construction vehicles without seeing trees die should not be a part of this discussion. Sturdy construction fencing closing off the entire area. Yellow or orange tape around a tree trunk is woefully inadequate. If trenching in an area cannot be avoided, there are alternatives such as hand trenching to avoid damaging larger roots or using an air spade or even underground boring equipment. It is also important to note how construction changes can impact the microclimate of a landscape. Examples here include changes in wind movement, sunlight intensity or mois-

ture. These changes are not necessarily bad, but once again, this is highly dependent on a variety of factors. For more information on this or any other horticultural topic, you can contact Keith Reed, the

Horticulturist in the Payne County Extension office. Keith can be reached via email at keith.reed@ okstate.edu, phone at 405-747-8320, or in person at the Payne County Extension office, located at 315 W. 6th in Stillwater.

The do’s and don’ts of fall fragrances By Cathy Hobbs Tribune News Service

What does your home say about you? What is the first or lasting impression? In many instances, the unseen can make a lasting impression, whether positive or negative. We are talking about scent. Fragrance can be powerful when it comes to either attracting or distracting. And for many, infusing scents is part of the experience for guests. When looking for ways to infuse fragrance and scent into your home,

here are some tips. DO: 1. Look for natural scents (as opposed to artificial). Lemons, limes, oranges and their natural scents can be used to help infuse natural fragrance into your home. 2. Consider using plants and herbs. Sage and lavender are two of the most popular and make wonderful scents either individually or in combination. 3. Use soy candles. Soy candles burn cleaner than paraffin and are a wonderful way to infuse scents. 4. Make your

own potpourri or scented sachets. From dried petals to spices, herbs and plants, making your own potpourri or sachets will create a longer-lasting fragrance. 5. Use essential oils. Essentials oils either alone or blended into soy

own. Most sellers who choose the for-saleby-owner route do so because they don’t want to pay the typical 6 percent commission that a professional agent would charge. Their homes are usually listed in newspaper or online advertisements as a “FSBO,” pronounced “fizz-bo.” Though FSBO sellers don’t want to pay a 5 or 6 percent sales commission, they’ll often agree to pay a 3 percent fee to an agent who produces a qualified buyer. If the sellers in your particular situation won’t agree, you’ll have to pay the real estate pro with cash from your own pocket if your offer is accepted.

with. However, it has its downsides. It requires more maintenance than many other materials and it’s vulnerable to rot and insects. It can also easily move out of the midrange price category into premium if you choose a high-end wood species or product. STUCCO Stucco siding is popular in the southwest and coastal environments because of its weather- and moisture-resistant properties. Stucco offers durability and good looks with low maintenance and a moderate price. However, installing stucco is labor-intensive and requires the skill of an experienced pro. FIBER CEMENT Fiber cement siding is made from a mixture of cellulose,

sand and cement, which makes it incredibly durable, resistant to rot and termites, and fire-resistant. One disadvantage is its tricky installation process. You’ll need an experienced pro for the best results. Another is it needs to be installed on a clean wall, so you’ll likely have to remove your old siding. PREMIUM OPTIONS BRICK Brick siding is

durable, nearly maintenance-free, resistant to rot and insects, and fire-resistant. Plus, you can get it in a number of different colors, sizes and textures. This material will protect your home for years to come – and look good doing it. SYNTHETIC STUCCO Synthetic stucco is a multi-layered insulating coating, also known as exterior insulation and finish systems. It is

more crack-resistant and energy efficient than standard stucco. However, it’s less durable and can be susceptible to water damage, making it a less-than-ideal choice for wet environments. SYNTHETIC STONE Synthetic stone siding is manufactured to look like real stone, giving you the

look of genuine stone without the steep cost. It’s also fire-resistant, bug-resistant and low-maintenance. It weighs substantially less than actual stone, so it’s easier to install. As you research siding that falls within your budget, check the materials against your expectations for energy efficiency, aesthetics and longevity.
