Horticulture tips for November As November arrives, consider the following landscape and gardening tips: Trees can still be planted in November. If you would like to see some interesting examples of trees for good fall color, join the OSU Landscape Services team for a short (and timely) campus walk on Tuesday, November the 1st. The walk is free to attend with no registration required. It will begin promptly at 12:10 and end at 12:50 at the Chi-O Clock on the north side of the Student Union. Thanks to OSU’s Department of Wellness for sponsoring the event. November is a good time to make a nitrogen application for cool-season turfgrasses such as tall fescue. Actively growing tall fescue may still need mowing during this time. Speaking of tall fescue, one of the significant contributors to its decline is the build-up of
Home Grown KEITH REED excess leaves. While it is not necessary to remove leaves as soon as they land on the turf, it is important to prevent them from completely blocking all light, water and air movement. One of the easiest ways to dispose of excess leaves is to continue mowing and chop them into small pieces where they will easily decompose directly into the turf, providing nutrients as they go. At some point, you may still need to collect the excess, but the quantity will be much smaller and easier to manage. Well-chopped leaves also provide a nice head start to the composting process, with smaller pieces decomposing much
quicker. Most vegetable plants should already be in the compost pile by now. Leaving plants in the garden tends to harbor pests and disease so clean up any remaining plant residue as soon as possible. You can also still plant winter cover crops, but act soon! This is also a good time to clean up select ornamentals. The key word here is “some”. Perennials that are a bit cold sensitive should be left alone until next spring. Pruning them now (even though they appear dormant) can set them up for winter injury. Crape myrtles and roses are common examples of plants that should not be
(with a light coating of oil) will pay dividends in the spring. Adding fuel stabilizer to small engines is also another important garden task that will pay big dividends come springtime. November is also a great time of year to walk the land-
scape and makes notes about changes you would like to make for next season while things are still fresh on your mind. For more information of this or any other horticultural topic, you can contact Keith Reed, the Horticul-

Home buyers shouldn’t fear pending hike in federal funds rate The Federal Reserve Board seems ready to raise interest rates. Ironically, it could be the tonic to keep the nation’s housing market from falling ill. DEAR MR. MYERS: I keep hearing reports on the radio and seeing on TV that the Federal Reserve Board is going to raise interest rates in November. Why would the group do this, considering that the housing market is still strong and the overall economy seems to be getting better? It makes no sense! ANSWER: Actually, it makes perfect sense. The increase probably won’t come in November, but rather after the Fed’s meeting in December. The Federal Reserve Board is made of seven economists who are nominated for their respective positions by the president and then must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Their main job is to raise or lower the prime rate, which is the rate at which one bank charges another for an over-
About Real Estate DAVID MYERS night loan to meet federally set banking standards. The anticipated 0.25 percent increase in the prime rate probably won’t create an immediate rise in homeloan rates, and it might even push them down further. A prime-rate hike would curb spending, keep the economy from overheating and thus keep inflation in check. That’s what happened when the Fed raised rates last December: Most lenders promptly cut their rates on new 30year mortgages because they felt
confident that the prospect of an even bigger, longer-term increase in rates and inflation had been put to bed for the next several years. *** REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: A precursor of today’s Federal Reserve Board was the First Bank of the United States, created by Congress in 1791. Farmers didn’t like the idea of having the government and private lenders essentially controlling the economy, so the FBUS was dis-
banded by lawmakers 20 years later – by a single vote. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: I bought a new water heater about five years ago. I recently received a postcard from the company that installed the heater, stating that it’s time to replace the water tank’s “anode rod” to help protect the heater’s expected lifespan. What does an anode rod do? Does it really need to be replaced, or is the company just trying to make more money from us? ANSWER: No, the company that installed your water heater isn’t trying to hit you with an unneeded maintenance bill. Most homeown-
ers, like you, don’t even know that their water heater has an anode rod, because it’s hidden on the inside of the tank rather than on the tank’s exterior. Nonetheless, the rod is a key component of a water heater’s system and should be replaced every five years or so to prolong the tank’s life. The inside of most steel water heater tanks are lined with a thin sheet of glass to help prevent the steel from gradually being eroded by the sediment, min-
erals or other microscopic stuff that is typically found in public and private water systems alike. The long anode rod, which usually is made of magnesium or aluminum, attracts these corrosive elements so they don’t eat away at the tank itself – sort of like the way that a lightning rod attracts thunderbolts so they don’t harm the house that’s underneath. After a while, though, the anode rod becomes so corroded that it can no longer do its all-important job.
If that happens, the corrosive material in the water will attack the tank itself: Cracks and leaks will develop, and the entire water-heating system may then need to be replaced. Experts at The Family Handyman Magazine (www. familyhandyman. com) note that paying to have the anode rod replaced before it fails is much cheaper than being forced to buy a brand-new water heater – and even could double the heater’s expected lifespan.

aesthetic. Instead, deep, dark colors like black, slategray, green, burgundy and navy, together with layered textures like faux fur and velvet, evoke the feeling of a cozy hideaway. Try painting your white room – or even just your trim or fireplace – in a dark tone for winter, and tell us it doesn’t instantly get cozier. ART ADDS PERSONALITY You know what
doesn’t scream cozy? Sparse walls. Nothing makes a home feel more lived-in and personal than walls covered in a collection of art and photographs. Thankfully it’s easy to cover your surroundings with interesting visuals without spending much, like old movie posters at flea markets to the multitude of online sources for surprisingly inexpensive art.
EMBRACE WOOD ACCENTS Wooden pieces, be they a footstool, a bench or a side table – especially when paired with the aforementioned items – evoke the feeling of a ski lodge. If wood pieces aren’t in your budget, a basket or pile of artfully arranged chopped wood feels just as impactful, even if you don’t have a fireplace to burn it in.

them with one or two large garbage bags or with frost cloth, which is sold at many garden centers. Covering the plants can keep the surrounding air temperature as much as three to five degrees warmer than the actual temperature. Joliet, Ill., garden designer Patti Kirkpatrick refreshes her containers of edibles. “I like to fill in empty spots with perennial and cool-season herbs such as sage, oregano and parsley,” she says. “Greet your guests with a taste of things to come in your holiday feasts – use the herbs in your cooking as well as fresh fillers in a centerpiece for a beautiful table later this fall.” Kirkpatrick also uses twigs to give height to pots. “I add curly willow branches that can be used natural, or you can spray paint them.” For texture, she adds cut flowering stems of ornamental grasses. “Panicums (native switch grass) work well, as do Calamagrostis (feather reed grass) and some Miscanthus. And yes, you can spray paint them all too.” When designing fall containers, McGuire looks to plant combinations that offer contrasting foliage and texture. In the center of a
pot, she may use Toffee Twist sedge (Carex flagellifera ‘Toffee Twist’) because of its beautiful toasted coppery brown corkscrew leaves. “It makes it much more interesting than just flower color – I just love it.” You will too. The pros share these fall container gardening tips: Fill in the blanks. Where there’s an empty spot in the container, Kirkpatrick says, “Plop in a real pumpkin or two for color.” Wait for the display. For long-lasting chrysanthemums, McGuire suggests buying plants when the flowers are just in the bud stage, so you can enjoy them as they open. Free them from the cabinet. “So you no longer use those turkey salt and pepper shakers that belonged to Aunt Mildred?” Kirkpatrick asks. Remove the plugs on the bottom, place the shakers on a stick and pose them in a pot. “Pilgrims and pumpkins work well too,” she says. Use perennials. “You can take them out of the pots and plant them in October in the ground, so you can enjoy them next year,” McGuire says. Anticipate the winter. As the weather gets cold,
replace the plantings with evergreen boughs, Kirkpatrick says. “But leave the

Dear Debbie: I am redecorating, and all my lampshades are boring. Have you got any tips or sources for shades or lamps that have some character? Looking forward to any ideas. – Valerie Dear Valerie: There are lampshade kits that you can buy and make your own unique versions. Fabrics come in any and all colors and designs, and depending on your skill level, you can add pleats and trims to produce an eye-catching display. Another option is to shop antique stores for old lamps or vessels that can be turned into lamps, so you can create a one-ofa-kind light fixture that has a captivating history attached to it. You’ll find lamp wiring kits in hardware stores. At a recent Interior Design Show in Toronto, I discovered a fascinating option for lampshades that are anything but boring. The company is called Urban Lampscapes (www. urbanlampscapes.

Through the years, we have gotten very inventive when it comes to creating unusual base layers for our tabletops. We’ve started place settings on top of things like mirrors, artwork and wreaths. So, let your creativity run wild. STYLING TIP: Chery likes to mix together lots of patterns and textures on her table tops. So she suggests selecting a charger in a contrasting color or pattern, something unexpected to set off your dishes. MIX UP YOUR DISHES Remember when we were expected to use matched sets of dishes when we entertained? You can say goodbye to that creativity killing rule. Feel free to mix your dishes with abandon. We often use different patterns for the dinner plate, the salad plate and the top layer (which may be a soup tureen, or a cup and saucer). Not only does the variation of plates make your table more interesting to look at, it gives you a great way to use those partial sets
that are gathering dust in your china hutch, the ones you never use because you don’t have enough of each plate size to outfit the entire table. Give your everyday dishes an instant holiday makeover by topping them with a holiday-themed salad plate. STYLING TIP: Add some drama to your table setting by building it up a bit, Chery suggests. Top your tower of plates with a wrapped gift for each guest, a sorbet glass holding a tree ornament or a cup and saucer, ready
for hot cocoa or Irish coffee. ADD CONTRASTING GLASSWARE & FLATWARE Just as a great pair of earrings or a wonderful scarf can make your outfit, your choice of glassware and flatware can amp up the finished look of your table. Colored glassware gives you a chance to accentuate a key color in your palette. Don’t be afraid to use more than one set on your table. We often mix patterns when we design our tables. Or, add a little statement maker.
FINISH WITH SOME GREAT SERVING PIECES Another way to make everyday

an essential decor item and the ideal place for a stylish vignette. Lidded decorative boxes with crystal embellished lids are gorgeous-looking and practical – the perfect place to stash your keys, remote controls and spare change. • Add some of Mother Nature’s finest with raw crystal. • An acrylic box with a decorative crystal top is the perfect fusion of function and fashion. • Add a one-off porcelain vase to showcase your appreciation for the handmade. THE CREDENZA The credenza is an essential element to any living room, entry or hallway. It’s at once a practical piece (hello, pretty
storage) and a stylish item to display your new purchases, vintage scores or flea-market finds. Change it up every season, or when you find that special something and want to swap it up. • Decor should never be overly serious, so add a whimsical object for a playful addition. Place it on top of an interesting coffee table book for an intriguing focal point. It’s also a different way to make your space feel casual and offbeat, not overdone. • Place an original piece of artwork above the credenza or on top of it to add color and an offbeat element to your display. • Handmade planters in varying materials like concrete bring texture
and differing surface elements to the table. They can be varying heights, but small is preferred so you can pepper in pops of greenery where needed without saturating the space with color. • A little history goes a long way when styling a credenza. Since it’s usually in a high-frequented area of the home such as the entry, hallway, or living area, there will also be a lot of eyes on this vignette. This is where you place those pieces you’ve collected on travels overseas or oneoffs you found from emerging artists either online or on the road. They’re conversation starters and beautiful elements to diversify a contemporary space.

Not only will it stand the test of time but it will also be the perfect neutral foundation for any creative vignette. • A gilded mirror never goes out of style. Layer a few on top of each other to dial the style up and open up the space. • Find varying mirror shapes to layer on top of one another. • Look out for some perfectly imperfect pieces crafted from organic material to add that natural element to your home. Geodes, petrified wood, rocks with small fossils or clusters of pyrite sit comfortably with more polished decorative items. • Unique modern lighting with sculptural detailing adds visual interest and a warm glow to any vignette. What does it take to create a personality-packed space with visual intrigue? While the layout is key and a styled entryway is essential (one that’s also clutter-free), the best way to make a room interesting is to design artistic compositions that speak to your passions, travels, obsessions and heritage. These curated moments are also known as vignettes. When styled well, they make a room compelling and alluring to both the homeowner and its visitors. So what does it take to make a successful vignette? A mix of textures, materials and styles is essential along with original art and collected objects from your life’s journey. Whether you’re styling a coffee table, credenza or hallway bench, we take you through each piece
and the must-have objects you need to achieve a stylish composition. THE COFFEE TABLE The coffee table is often referred to as the statement shoe of the room, and with good reason. It has a practical and pretty purpose. Guests can use the space as a rest stop for their beverages and snacks, but it’s also the first point of reference for your personal taste, likes, and interests. So only display the books, candles and objets d’art that really speak to you and communicate who you are in the glance of an eye. Feel free to rotate your book selection seasonally or even weekly, and add a hint of greenery, preferably something hardy. • A candle is always a welcome addition to any coffee table, and this one has a classic look and scent all guests will enjoy inhaling. • Opt for the classics when choosing

How do I choose a storm door? By Cynthia Wilson Angie’s List
Homeowners typically buy a storm door to protect their front door from weather damage and to make their homes more energy efficient. But storm doors can also provide extra security and boost your home’s curb appeal, says Ryon Oates, owner of The Door Guys in Crosby, Texas. “If it swings out, it protects the door from getting kicked in,” Oates says. If you’re in the market for a storm door, know that aluminum is the preferred material. Most manufacturers choose aluminum as the frame for storm doors because it’s stronger, more weather
resistant and easier to install. While you might buy an aluminum door with a wood core, Ron Koralewski, a salesman for the Joe Wilde Company in New Berlin, Wis., says aluminum is the better investment. “Aluminum is thicker and more rigid. Wood has some flex to it,” he says. Aluminum doors are also sold in various degrees of thickness. The thicker the aluminum door, the sturdier it is, Koralewski says. After you choose the door’s color, hardware and thickness, you’ll need to decide what kind of view and venting you want. Here are some options: FULL- OR
PARTIAL-VIEW STORM DOOR A full-view storm door is dominated by glass and encased in an aluminum frame. Full-view storm doors provide more light and a better view of the outdoors without opening the door. It also allows you to protect your elaborate wooden front door, while also showing off its features. You can buy full-view storm doors with interchangeable glass and screen panels to keep insects out. You won’t get as much natural light or view with a halfor three-quarterview storm door. However, some manufacturers will install a pet door in the bottom half of the door.
LET FRESH AIR IN, KEEP BUGS OUT The view you choose for your storm door affects your ventilation options. For example, you may need to remove the panel in a full-view storm door and insert a screen for fresh air when it’s closed. But some manufacturers make full-view storm doors with retractable screens. “Within a matter of seconds, you can pull it down and the screen can be exposed,” Koralewski says. The biggest drawback to doors with retractable screens is that the casing that holds the retractable screen interrupts the seamless glass look. On the other hand, a partial-view storm

quality storm door for about $350, the cost of which doesn’t include installation. Most retail storm doors are designed for DIY installation. If you want a professional to do it, prices vary. Oates, who installs doors, but doesn’t sell them, says installation costs range from about $175 to $250 in his market, although some installers charge more.
