MILLENNIAL MONEY 2. USE THE BONUS-FRIENDLY SEASON If you’re debt-free and planning to get a new credit card, look for one with a sign-up bonus that can offer additional cash or rewards to defray holiday expenses. Sign-up bonuses usually offer a three-month window to meet spending requirements, and they can be easier to reach if you’re charging everyday and holiday expenses. A card with a 0% APR on purchases can also save money on interest for some time. 3. EARN REWARDS WITH CASH-BACK APPS A cash-back app can earn additional value on everyday purchases. It may require uploading receipts, but for Krystal Sharp, coupon coach and creator of the blog Krys the Maximizer, it’s worth the effort. She uses Ibotta, Fetch Rewards and other apps to earn cash back or gift cards. These apps let you add offers in-store or online from certain retailers and earn cash back on eligible items purchased. Or you can upload a receipt to redeem certain offers. You may

also earn incentives for referring other people. For more value, Sharp uses a rewards credit card to make purchases and stack earnings. “I’m trying to focus a lot on how can I earn gift cards, how can I get referrals, how can I save enough at the store and use my store rewards to buy things we need for the holidays,” she says. Depending on how much you spend, it’s possible to make $20 to $25 in a week or two with everyday purchases, and that’s typically enough to cash out, according to Sharp. The earnings add up over time. 4. SAVE WITH A ‘NO-SPEND CHALLENGE’ A foolproof way to save is to refrain from making unnecessary purchases over a certain period of time. You can try a no-spend month, no-spend weeks or no-spend weekends, depending on your preference. The money saved can offset potential costs during the holidays. For Courtney Clarke, a New York-based content creator at TheLifeOfCo YouTube channel, a “nospend November”

For a month, she spent only on essentials, avoiding eating out and activities that cost money. “I definitely can’t say that I was perfect in the matter, but it’s just a nice reset to retrain your brain,” says Clarke. “It’s just making sure that you’re attempting to get the best out of it.” She admits spending on eating out when there wasn’t enough time to prepare a meal, but even after straying occasionally she still saved over $300 that month. 5. GET A SIDE HUSTLE Earn money toward the holidays by picking up a side job now or decluttering your home. When it comes to

gig work, there are many flexible side jobs to do in your spare time from ridesharing to making deliveries. Or if you prefer to save time, sell those dust-gathering items in your closet to consignment stores. “I sold a ton of stuff to Plato’s Closet and Once Upon a Child to get rid of

it,” says Sharp. She estimates that she averages about $50 per trip or $200 to $300 per year. This article was provided to The Associated Press by the personal finance website NerdWallet. Melissa Lambarena is a writer at NerdWallet. Email: mlambarena@nerdwallet.com. Twitter: @lissalambarena.

Bermudagrass eradication at Our Daily Bread By Keith Reed Home Grown

it’s easier to see what is happening underneath. This method was only moderately successful as everywhere the plastic bubbled up, the bermuda managed to survive, even through the heat of summer. From a soil improvement perspective, cardboard/ woodchips was the preferable option of

the two as the structure of the soil under the cardboard begins to improve quickly once it’s covered. The microclimate seems to be ideal for the movement of earthworms and other decomposers. Another technique we’ve used is to dig up the green bermuda sod (down to a depth of about 8” or so) and

screened it using a 1/2-inch hail screen nailed to an old pallet. While this method is effective, it is incredibly labor intensive. It is also dependent on the soil moisture conditions being just right. Be advised, this is not for the faint-ofheart but it can be a quicker method if time is a factor. No matter the

method used, weekly (or at least bi-weekly) hoeing sessions are still needed to rogue out the remaining trouble spots. The key to success here is spotting the break-out bermuda early so it can be removed before the leaves can feed/restore energy reserves to the mother plant under the soil. Bottom line: Is it

possible to successfully control bermuda without using herbicides? Yes, it is. Is it quick and or easy? No, it is not. Success will only come with a long term commitment to fighting this challenging garden pest. Keith can be reached via email at keith.reed@okstate. edu.

We have been assisting with the vegetable garden at Our Daily Bread Food and Resource Center in Stillwater since it was just a dream. Work began on this project three years ago this month so this a good time for an update on the toughest challenge we’ve faced: Eliminating the existing bermudagrass lawn without using herbicides. A foundational goal of this garden has been to maintain it using organic gardening standards. Of course, this means common herbicides that are typically used to control bermudagrass (such as glyphosate or sethoxydim) are off limits. While there are a few herbicides that do meet organic standards, they are simply not effective in eradicating a mature stand of bermudagrass. Here’s a summary of the methods we’ve been using along with our observations of the potential success/ failure chances if you choose to undertake this yourself. Cardboard boxes come into Our Daily Bread by the hundreds so it only made sense to take advantage of this resource. We began by breaking down the boxes (removing staples but leaving most of the plasticized tape) and spread them out at least 2-3 layers thick on the bermuda and

then covering them with several inches of wood chips. Once again, we started this about this time of year. By mid-May the following spring, we started seeing bermudagrass breaking through the cardboard. An inspection revealed that the bermuda runners had successfully grown around and in-between the layers of cardboard, taking advantage of air spaces to find their way to the surface. The lesson here is to avoid using cardboard with holes in it, or if you do, make sure it’s covered with another layer of cardboard so that the air gaps from one layer to another are at least a foot apart. Where the bermuda did break through, we raked away all the wood chips (and rotting cardboard), hoed away ALL the living bermuda rhizomes (it’s easy to see the difference between live plants and dead ones at this point) and repeated the process. In our toughest areas, we have repeated this as many as three times over two growing seasons to finally defeat the bermuda. Note: we’ve found it’s easier to rake up and discard the plastic tape at this step in the process than it is to remove it from new boxes. As the garden has expanded, we have also experimented using solarization as a first step. We chose to use clear plastic as

America’s most expensive home for sale A spectacular mansion in Southern California, once valued at $500 million, is now being marketed at a bargain-basement price of “only” $225 mil. With a manmade moat and 42 bathrooms, it isn’t even completed. DEAR DAVE: I recently saw a story on TV that said that the most expensive home in America – it is nicknamed “The One” – is now in foreclosure. Is this true? Have you ever been there? ANSWER: Technically, as of this writing, the 105,000-square-foot mega-mansion in the swank Southern California community of Bel-Air is in receivership rather than in foreclosure. Regardless, I haven’t been there: Folks who have a property valued at $500 million just several months ago generally don’t ask guys like me to join them for a meatloaf dinner on a Sunday night. I have driven by it, though. Here’s what is inside, according to a recent account by The Los Angeles Times, a newspaper for which I toiled for many years: “’The One’ overloads visitors with its obvious excess. Nine bedrooms in the main house, not counting the 4,000-square-foot

guesthouse or servants’ quarters. Multiple pools and a moat. A wellness spa. A beauty salon with washing, cutting and pedicure stations. “A cigar room,” the description continues. “A four-lane bowling alley. A multiplex-size movie theater with (50) white leather seats. An undulating sixhole putting green on the sky deck.” Oh, and let’s not forget the palace’s nightclub with VIP seating. Nor its 50car garage, with two carousels to display the owner’s various exotic automobiles. It also has 42 bathrooms – and it is still under construction. The court-appointed receiver has been trying to find a buyer for the home after its original owner (who was also its developer) allegedly defaulted on several loans and construction contracts. Originally valued at $500 million about a year ago, its price has now been slashed to a more affordable $225 million. building provide a key to his or her apartment? ANSWER: Yes, most city or county rental ordinances allow landlords to demand a duplicate key to a tenant’s apartment or rental house. Such laws protect property owners and renters alike. For example, if there’s a broken water pipe or gas leak inside an apartment unit but the tenant isn’t home, the duplicate key can be used to allow a repairman access to fix the problem and thus limit damage to both the dwelling and the tenant’s personal property. Of course, a landlord cannot use a duplicate key to simply enter the property without a good reason. Land-

Fall’s a good time for a flower-bed makeover

bloom, garish color combinations, too many irises and daffodils – are still fresh in mind. My bed further suffered from becoming too much of a hodgepodge of various flowering plants. It had become a home, although it was supposed to be only a temporary one, for many flowers that I had been given or purchased on impulse. MAKE A PLAN Diving into this opportunity to redo the whole flower garden, I make a plan on paper. A good idea is to sketch not only the usual bird’seye view, delineating groups of each kind of flower, but also to sketch from a human’s-eye view – that is, the garden

as you would see it from ground level, emphasizing the height, texture and form of each plant. In this human’s-eye view, I was able to rough out pleasant-looking undulations of spiky irises, delphiniums and gayfeathers, soft mounds of asters and spireas, and tall and pompom-topped coneflowers and black-eyed Susans. A backdrop of butterfly bush and the lacy leaves and flowers of baby’s-breath should -- I hope -- knit everything together. And then the actual work begins. To thin out clumping plants like irises, slide a garden fork beneath a clump and give the clump a slight lift. Then,

turn frigid. Mulches also reduce the alternate freezing and thawing of the soil that during the winter can heave newly rooted plants up and out of the ground. There is a downside to this autumn flower-bed makeover: The bed does look forlorn, for now. But a makeover isn’t an annual affair, and everything will look perky in spring. Yes, I could have waited until spring for this makeover. But there are too many other things to attend to in the spring garden.

Mine were taking up space in which other, later flowering plants could be strutting their stuff. Much the same could be said for the daffodils in that bed. These bulbs evidently found the bed much to their liking, and bore many offspring who, in turn, bore many of their own offspring, and so on over the years. They presented a glorious and welcome sea of yellow each spring, but the yellowing leaves that followed were a sorry sight for too long. At least the iris leaves look reasonably prim the whole season. Fall is also a good time for a flower-bed makeover because any deficiencies – lack of midsummer

start growing right away, I’ve given the bed a thorough soaking. Following that came a topdressing of a couple of inches of wood chips -- except for the delphiniums, hungry plants that they are, which had compost tucked around their stems before the chips went down. Mulches seal moisture into the soil, and also keep soil temperatures from dropping as low or as fast as in unmulched ground. That gives roots more time to grow before temperatures

Nobody ever said gardening offers instant gratification. With this limitation in mind, I dug and made over one of my flower beds last weekend. For the plants, fall is a fine time for a flower-bed makeover. Cooler temperatures slow water loss from leaves, so plants can better tolerate being ripped out of the ground and roughed up before having their roots nestled back into dirt. Leaves still on these plants stimulate new root growth, helping plants re-establish in their new homes. Try subjecting most plants to this brutal treatment in summer and many would die. WHY A MAKEOVER MIGHT BE NEEDED The major impetus for my flower-bed makeover was some Siberian irises that had run amok, threatening to take over the entire bed. Perhaps you can’t have too many iris flowers, but after the flowers fade, you surely can have too many iris leaves.

pushing two forks or two shovels back to back down the center of the clump, pull the tops of the two forks or shovels apart to pull apart the clump. Replant parts of the clump and give away the rest to a fellow gardener for planting. And the daffodils? Just dig them up, separate the bulbs by hand, and replant the largest ones. READYING THE BED FOR WINTER AND BEYOND Everybody’s back in place now, and to ensure that roots

mowers in the private sector,” says Morrell. Morrell, who also teaches aspiring landscaping professionals, says that while electric trimmers and mowers are now as good or better than gas-guzzling versions, cordless electric leaf blowers are still a challenge “because they require a lot of velocity and power, and the weight of the battery at this point is a lot heavier than gas.” But the technology is evolving quickly, he says. “When I teach my landscaping management students, who will go on to manage large landscapes, I know they will be using electric equipment.” The electric tools, and some less-polluting gas options, are just part of a rethinking of many lawn-care practices and their effect on the environment. Many gardeners and landscapers are moving away from “a hyper-managed standard of blow drying leaves,” for instance, in favor of “just letting leaves be leaves, with some of them staying on the ground,” says Daniel Mabe, founder of the American Green Zone Alliance (AGZA), which offers homes,

businesses and organizations across the country a certification for low carbon-footprint landscaping. Letting more leaves, plant stalks and other garden debris cover garden beds during the winter helps the soil, and insects and other wildlife, experts say. Where power tools are needed, the shift from gas to electric is not unlike the trend toward electric cars. According to the California Air Resources Board, a department within the California Environmental Protection Agency, operating a gas leaf blower for an hour can create as much smog-forming pollution as driving a Toyota Camry 1,100 miles. The battery-powered lawn equipment sector is growing at a rate three times faster than gas, according to the Freedonia Group, a division of MarketResearch.com. “In terms of residential adoption of electric landscaping equipment, at least here in California, it’s already about 50 percent,” Mabe says. He sees more resistance to electric equipment among professional landscaping companies than among residential consumers. But

he estimates there are now at least 200 “all-electric” landscaping companies. Many of them make use of robotic technology, programming and maintaining the lawn equivalent of the Roomba. Andrew Bray, vice president of government relations for the Fairfax, Virginia-based, National Association of Professional Landscapers, says, “The transition to electric is inevitable, and most landscapers are trying out this equipment all the time. But while the technology is already there for homeowners – and I myself use electric equipment at home – the technology isn’t

there yet for most of the commercial sector.” “With leaf blowers, for example, they don’t yet have the battery power needed for commercial use,” he says. And he said there are cost and infrastructure hurdles for professional landscapers looking to switch from gas to electric. “Since battery packs are not interchangeable between brands of tools, you’d have to retrofit your whole shop so that everything is the same brand. You’d also probably have to upgrade the wattage of the electrical system in your shop, since an average crew would need about 36

batteries,” he says. Still, electric’s momentum is growing. Stanley Black & Decker, a leading maker of outdoor products, estimates that the volume of electric-powered landscaping equipment that North American manufacturers shipped went from 9 million units in 2015 to over 16 million last year, an over 75 percent increase in the past five years. “We continue to innovate in cordless (electric) products focused on delivering high performance while having lower noise and no emissions in use,” says John Wyatt, senior vice president of Stanley Outdoor.
